Shaq’s Hit List Grows: Stan Van Gundy, Come on Down!

by Marcel Mutoni

During his 16-year career, if there’s one thing we’ve learned about Shaquille O’Neal, it’s that in the blink of an eye, he can turn from the fun-loving goofball that everyone enjoys, into someone far more bitter and vicious.

The latter was on display last night prior to the matchup with Miami, as O’Neal reacted angrily to his former coach Stan Van Gundy’s wholly correct assessment that Shaq had turned into the Big Flopper when going up against Dwight Howard.

From the Arizona Republic:

“He (Dwight Howard) came with the same old, stale Patrick Ewing move so I tried to stand there and take the charge. The new rules say if you come through, you fall. But as I fell, I realized that it was a flop and it reminded me of Coach Van Gundy’s whole coaching career. The one thing I despise is a frontrunner. First of all, none of his players like him. When it gets tough, he will become the master of panic like he did before and he will quit like he did before.”

“Stan Van Gundy reminds me of a broke navigational system. He knows everything about everything but ain’t never been nowhere. When a bum says some (stuff) and I respond, you can (expletive) cancel that ’cause I know how he is in real life. We’ll see when the playoffs start and he (expletive) panics and quits like he did when he was here. Do I look soft to you like you can say something and I’m not going to say something?”

“I said this a long time ago but I was actually talking about him (Van Gundy). When the general panics, the troops will panic…All the players hate him.”

Lovely.

When reached by reporters, Van Gundy took the character assassination in stride, saying that’s just how Shaq is. I wonder how long O’Neal will wait until he tries to paint this as just another one of his “marketing” ploys.

To quote SLAM from about 10 years ago: F*ck Shaq you know?

  • BostonBaller

@The Seed: Shaq isn’t trying to stay in the limelight, it just shines on him. I’m sure it was a 2 way street in LA and don’t forget Kobe had his own drama w/out Shaq.

@Esco: “Everyone is laughing at how funny all of this is but isn’t realizing that Shaq hardly addresses the flop.” He did address the flop and as far as “he egrariously flopped against the Magic”, he flopped 1x in the game. lol (egregiously?)
@ Erik: As far as Shaq not talking smack last year when “his numbers were not that good” it’s hard to hear the smack talking when no ones interviews him. lol. Shaq did sound off last year. As far as his numbers last year all you have to do is look at the number of touches he got to figure out his scoring drop and don’t forget the injuries.

  • BostonBaller

@JESSEG: “ever since he arrived in Phx they are much worse TEAM with him on it” They were not going anywhere before he arrived so how much worse could they be. They ran Shaq’s 1st year and he wasn’t as involved even though his presence freed up STAT and Nash more, this year most of the team quit on Porter (Shaq’s fault I guess). This year they have a totally different team and are injury riddled. ( Shaq’s fault I guess). How many former teammates has Shaq belittled? I’m curious.

@Young Chris: I ask you what has the players you mentioned won without Shaq? (Penny DWade Kobe)The only one who has done anything in the playoffs w/out Shaq is Kobe and it’s safe to say he has had some really good talent around him as well (better talent than Nick, E Jones, N Anderson) lol. Lebron’s squad that went to the finals weren’t exactly bums and they got there with the East having 1 good team to beat that year (Detroit) and they imploded. lol.

@donlaker: Shaq’s numbers were good against Orlando and don’t forget Howard AND his running mate had a really good games. As far as Shaq’s wife, I believe he left her and not the other way around. hahaha They were together during ASG weekend.

  • BostonBaller

..just got busted by the boss…can I have a job SLAM? I do windows…lol

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

Izzo, I can’t argue with you about that. Everybody changes pivot feet in the NBA.
And all the Euro cats set moving screens. Every time.

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

    BostonBaller
Come on man. You know Shaq has had crazy talent.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Izzo

Allenp:But in the grand scheme of things, things like changing pivot foots, calling travelling and actual allowing players to play some form of perimeter D without hearing whistles should be of more importance than whether or not someone flopped and should be seen to immediately, but I know they won’t.
BTW,I agree with you on the moving screens, but I would consider that a hazy one and down to ref discretion.Same goes for charging calls,a lot of charges called in the NBA lately are either blocking fouls or very hard to call, but guess who gets the call?Offense.

  • donlaker

shaq still has a pivot foot? shaq did have talent, but since then dude cant leave fatburger alone….is he playing for a new contract …
because his best chance would have been with labron /cavs , steve kerr must have something up his sleeve at seasons end.
.. i will admit i do have shaq rapping on vinyl i even have jason kidd rapping and cedric ceballas trying to rap over a warren g beat… shaq go back to acting
that role as the robot dude was hot… @boston baller, dude work for, yourself and meet me at venice beach b ball courts saturday 10 am

  • ka

oh god shaq y u do dis???!!!!!

  • aotearaw

Absolute gold. Keep pissing Shaq off please, I want more….

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

I feel the same way as aotearaw, actually. Shaq’s responses don’t seem entirely serious. Nothing can touch him right now.

  • http://sjsu.edu davidR

i dunno ryne. you can diss people in good nature and it’ll be lighthearted and funny, but this one sounds like those awkward mood killers where nobody knows what to say or do after its been said.

  • jdubbs29

D-Ho tried and punk me in the post
with that old Ewing move he love the most
Yeah it was a flop, but get off my case
Stan Van Jeremy, tell me how my ass taste
    I’m 37 and my game’s evolved
like the Pythagorean Theorem, i still can’t be solved
So take your hate back with you to Disney World
I’ll be on a new team next year singing “F the free world!”

  • Leeboy

I guess slam can’t released what Stan Van Gundy said. Show both sides man

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

“But as I fell, I realized that it was a flop and it reminded me of Coach Van Gundy’s whole coaching career.” – Shaq making formal introductions to Stan and a bus.

  • BostonBaller

AllenP: No doubt Shaq had talent around him, I’m just saying that both Kobe & James also had talent around them when they went to the finals and lost. As nice as Nick the Quick or N Anderson was I’d take Fisher over either of them. Gasol is no slouch either.

@donlaker The boss I spoke of was my wife. lol. I’d love to meet you at venice beach on saturday but I can’t waste a perfectly warm 50 degree day here in Boston. It’s in the high 20′s right now. Come up here and we can shovel off a court and play. Boston vs LA style. lol

  • http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.ListAll&friendID=243084247 Witness

OK! That was too far. Its one thing to say Bosh is RuPaul but then call out both dwight and stan… c’mon thats classless.

  • http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.ListAll&friendID=243084247 Witness

@ BostonBaller: Wait youre calling the 07 Cavalier team talented? The same one with larry hughes? and damon jones? and ira newble? who all were part of the rotation?

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Wow, f*ckin stupid @ss Shaq. Shut the f*ck up you washed-up motormouth f*cker.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

And I’m pretty sure it was Pat Riley who MADE Stan quit on the Heat so he could coach…
Correct me if I’m wrong about this I’m not too sure.
    Regardless, Shaq is a dumb@ss.

  • http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.ListAll&friendID=243084247 Witness

@ Teddy: i think it was family related. pat isnt the kind of person to tell someone to walk.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Shaq’s greatest talent was being able to blatantly elbow the living daylights out of post defenders, without getting called on it.

  • http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.ListAll&friendID=243084247 Witness

ok teddy. lets not knock shaqs game now. just call him a bad free throw shooter and call it a day. the man is a hall of famer.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

@ jdubbs29: The Pythagorean theorem can’t be solved?
    LOL

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Anyways, Shaq needs to the shut up big time, hall of famer or not. Dwight Howard is his daddy right now. So is Yao. So is Stan Van Gundy.

  • http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.ListAll&friendID=243084247 Witness

    Yao or Dwight > Shaq

  • KozmicKid

Van Gundy, you been served, shaqatized…

  • Teddy-the-Bear

    I co-sign that, Witness.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Well, I’ve had enough Shaq-bashing for now. I’ll be back later though.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Also, was there a tone of Shaq talking sh!t about Dwight’s mentor, Patrick Ewing? WOW. Patrick Ewing didn’t have to commit offensive fouls every time he went for a post move. Shaq is an idiot. If Patrick Ewing was playing in his prime, in an era without the Jordan-Bulls, he would have had multiple championships.
    Shaq is a punk.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

argghh I can’t help it! alright, I’m out, peace!

  • CP34MVP

Shaq is dope, Stan Van should of never said anything. Its Shaq for God’s sake. This is what he gets. And for the talking about Dwight.. Thumbs down Shaq. He’s the next you. Your little prodigy. And for you to tear him down. Terrible.

  • john

im a lifelong miami heat fan and respect shaq; as a player. as a person, shaq is a five year old trapped in a giants body lol.

  • http://nba.com tealish

I am honestly getting tired of Shaq. I get he epitomizes what old school NBA is all about and he’s funny now and again, but this ish is getting damn old. I also know I’m in the minority here, but I wouldn’t miss him all that badlywhen he retires. Yeah, take random shots at anyone and everyone, but when someone makes a legitimate criticism about you, you start playing the b*tch role. “All the players hate him!”? Please. Get the f*ck out of here.

  • http://nba.com tealish

Allenp is right about his success coming with not only Allstar guards, but ALL-NBA guards. Yeah people focus on Kobe not having won without Shaq, but the reverse is also true. Who took every big shot en route to that 2006 ring? Don’t think it was the big fella.
I’m not hating on his good teams. It’s merely worth pointing out because everytime Diesel gets at somebody, he brings out the rings card as if He = Championship.

  • Young Chris MP3

BostonBaller (my fellow Bostonian and Celtics fan) was my favorite commenter while he ethered the Shaq haters one by one… That is, until he mentioned my name. I was vouching for the Diesel because Lebron brings his “teams” to the playoffs each year and got to the Finals two years ago with an embarrassing supporting cast and I think it’s pretty fair to say that Chris Paul maximizes his team’s potential (did anybody notice how the Hornets played in the games he missed earlier this year?). Diesel stepped his game up big time when Nash went out, and he’s been doing it all year with a weak (and defensively challenged) Phoenix Suns squad. The fact that they are in contention for the playoffs at all the way that team outside of Shaquille O’Neal has played this year is an accomplishment in itself (kind of like Mike on the Wizards).

  • chintao

Shaq is a flatulent elephant. Only sophomoric layabouts could be charmed by his absurd monologues. I sincerely hope that he dies broke, lonely, and crippled.

  • Young Chris MP3

And tealish, the Miami Heat were a coach away from winning it in ’05. If anyone can recall, the master of panic was calling plays that focused on Rasual Butler and Eddie Jones during the game 6 that Dwyane Wade sat out against Detroit. Rasual Butler!

  • Young Chris MP3

And as much as I love Damon Jones, don’t anybody try to argue his value on that team to me. A healthy Shaq and a healthy Wade would have meant Miami repeating in ’06.

  • Young Chris MP3

In regards to Shaq’s championship potential, if Miami would have traded Marion and Banks back to the Suns for Diesel this year, or if the Lakers traded Bynum and Odom for Diesel this year, or if Cleveland would have given up Wally-World for Diesel as Phoenix apparently asked for (what was Danny Ferry on when he passed that one up?), it would have meant an automatic ring for this year and a great chance at repeating next year for any of those teams.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

Shaq should stop this. He’s looking insecure, looking like he can dish it out in droves but can’t take the slightest bit of criticism. I don’t want to remember him for this.

  • Tuomas

Jesus, you go outside for a few hours to take a jolly good piss up, and when you come back and see there’s 85 comments, you expect that someone has said something (anything!) that would refute even a sentence of what you said originally. But no.

  • http://nba.com tealish

Young Chris: Auto ring? Uh no. I’m sorry, but I believe you’ve fallen for the Shaq = Ring self-distributed propaganda. But don’t beat yourself up on it, Large Cactus is convincing. I’m sure he almost believes his own sh*t, himself.

  • http://nba.com tealish

Joel: Exactly. No one’s knocking what he’s done in the past, that stuff can’t be touched. And yet he constantly refers back to it. But unfortunately, his LA days *can* be overshadowed, at least in part, by the nonsense he can’t stop spewing nowadays.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

@Tuomas: Haha, what were you expecting? “Shaq is the greatest ever and all the rest of you can tell him how his ass taste?”

  • Tuomas

“Shaq’s arrogance is an insult to people who think.” coming from my least favorite announcer of all time, this really says it all.

  • Tuomas

I don’t know Joel, maybe I’m just too much of a Let-every-flower-blossom kinda dude.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

@tealish: I agree. The sad irony is as much as Shaq keeps claiming his “Shogun” status in comparison to the young, promising big men around right now, his comments of late have come off as impetuous and childish… and starkly in contrast to Dwight (who said he was hurt instead of lashing back) and Bosh (who took the high road and downplayed the entire thing). And that’s not even considering the things he said about Stan and Ewing. Elder statesman Shaq is, ironically, behaving like the new kid on the block shooting his mouth at his elders, while Bosh/Dwight, barely a few years removed from their TEENS, are taking the high road. Seriously, please stop this, Shaq.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

    @Tuomas: That’s a lot of quotes! Haha.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

And it’s not like the criticism against Shaq (by Dwight, Bosh, Stan) got even remotely personal. Bosh was essentially complaining about the refs. Dwight wasn’t even attacking Shaq, he was just lamenting the lack of support Shaq gave him. And Stan made a fair observation that even Shaq himself admitted to (flopping). And there’s a LOT of hurtful, personal things you could say about how Shaq handled himself over his career, many of which were brought up by the other commenters here. Bosh/Dwight/SVG never even remotely went near there, so Shaq’s tirade is really unwarranted.
