Stan Van Gundy on the Celtics’ ‘Excuses’

by Marcel Mutoni

Two nights ago, the Orlando Magic defeated the Boston Celtics in Florida, and in the process leap-frogged the C’s in the Eastern Conference standings. This made their coach a very happy man, and one who simply couldn’t resist throwing a shot at the team he’d just beaten.

Stan Van Gundy, who’s already gotten into one war of words this season, is tired of hearing Boston’s injury moans.

The Providence Journal has the details:

“I want to know how some teams get on the list, where they get excuses and other teams are not on that list. All I’ve been hearing about is all the injury problems the Celtics have had this year.”

Van Gundy talked about his own team’s loss of All-Star point guard Jameer Nelson, who suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in early February. The Magic have continued playing well in part because of a three-way trade that brought Rafer Alston from Houston.

Van Gundy doesn’t have to see Shaq on the court this season again, but the Celtics are likely to meet his Magic in the second round of the Playoffs. The two teams will then have a good opportunity to properly discuss these so-called excuses.

They should make a sitcom of Dwight and Stan! Thare so opposite!

  • riggs

yeah cause jameer = kg right stan? stfu and at least get to the finals.

  • Trevor

exactly riggs…how can losing jameer nelson even compare to losing kg…not too much 2 other crucial players in tony allen and leon powe.
    Go Celts!

  • Young Chris MP3

He does realize that if Doc Rivers were playing Garnett major minutes (like he will come playoff time), Magic would have got cracked, right?

  • Young Chris MP3

Stan Van Gundy’s a frontrunner. His whole career’s a flop.

  • Skooltime

Stan makes a good point but its becoming a mind game for the playoffs. Its a part of the game. Magic have had injuries just like the Celtics. Jameer=all-star just like KG=all-star. And to top it off the Magic made a trade for Alston to keep them afloat….who did the Celtics get? Marbury……that’s supposed to help? look at his stats with the Celtics so far.

Were the Lakers complaining without Bynum in the finals? No. Did they make excuses? No. The Celtics sure nuff didn’t care the Lakers were missing Bynum. Im sure if you ask the Celtics if they won the championship fair and square they would all say yes without a breath. The Lakers played and lost with dignity while the Celtics had ALL of their all-stars.

Injuries, free agent signings, and trades are part of the game..Staying healthy is part of the game too. All that is how the Celtics got some of their key players and their championship ring. So many teams have had injuries but the Celtics have 3 all-stars on their team while many others barely have 1. So enough with excuses.

  • L33tSauce

Actually, losing your PF who gets 16 and 8, whether he is the vocal leader or not, the team can still play C’s ball. On the other hand, losing Nelson takes away from how Orlando can attack, considering they are an inside out team and Nelson is a top threat behind the ark, shooting 45% from 3. And all this on top of the fact he’s their PG, one of the two most important positions.

  • http://www.mynameinorange.blogspot.com Hisham

hahaha @ stupid celtics fans. you will not have another parade this year.

  • Bishop1405

    Jameer 08-09
    PPG 16.7
    RPG 3.50
    APG 5.4

    Kevin 08-09
    PPG 15.8
    RPG 8.50
    APG 2.5

    He may have a point.

  • jay

Stan needs to shut that hole in his face or I’ll shut it for him. And that’s real. With the marquis of queensbury I’ll fight him tonight. Sign the contract big boy…

  • Fred34

This year the btown magic is gone and they will have significant injuries in the playoffs as well – the reason they wont make it to the finals. Anyday now they’re gonna rename the big three the old three for Boston. Those guys are too old and frail to repeat

  • http://nicekicks.com MeloMan13

numbers dont prove anything. KG is the heart and sole of that team. he provides defensive intimidation and intimidation. Nelson is a One-year all-star thta is having a solid seaon. Plus, they got rafer alston who has argually played better.
    Nelson does NOT = Kg
Maagic will be lucky to win 2 games against the C’s come playoffs

  • Joe

I guess Stan Van Gundy didn’t realize that his team almost let that game slip away….I mean the Celtics are complaining about not having KG, and the stil about beat them on their court.

  • big3remix

who is making excuses for the C’s injuries? I’m in Boston and yeah there has been curiosity on when the team will get better but to make excuses…nah never that.

  • Rome

I think winning CHANPIONSHIPS puts a team on the list, at least for the following year they defend their crown…

  • Jackie Moon

BOSTON WILL NOT WIN THE CHANPIONSHIPS.

  • https://twitter.com/TheDiesel Anton

I heard he’s making an adult movie about this entitled “Backdoor Adventures” starring The Big Green Machine and Dwight’s ugly baby mama.

  • BostonBaller

Skooltime, have you heard Doc Rivers say anything other than “we need to execute & play better”? The media has played up the injuries but the team has been going out and just played. Nelsons stats are pretty good but we all know that mere numbers do NOT tell the whole story. I haven’t heard any Celtic excuses from true fans just that we can’t wait until KG is parolled from his minutes jail cell. We also hope Powe and T Allen get healthy for the playoffs but if they don’t and we somehow lose then we will get pissed and wait until next year. Van gundy can’t be playing mind games since he has lost his mind, put him w/ the Dallas sub and have them 1 up each other.

  • http://neworleansbasketball.blogspot.com Caleb

Injuries ARE a good excuse, depending on the nature and extent of them. Orlando would have had an excuse to suck had they not got Alston. Fact is, they were sucking pretty hard post-Jameer injury and pre-Alston trade.

  • whooo!

Van Gundy is absolutely right. why the hell should boston get a free pass for “injuries”? the cavs had injuries, and the magic lost their all-star pg for the season. think about how important a pg is for your team, especially a young one. phx has no amare, lakers w/out bynum, spurs have had it rough w/out manu/parker for long stretches, houston w/out t-mac. EVERYONE has injuries, it’s part of the game. KG’s isn’t even a season ender like many other guys, so there should be no excuse.

  • whooo!

though i actually haven’t really heard it being used by the media as an excuse, but i also limit nba coverage to slam, tnt, and some online espn.

  • BostonBaller

whooo!, thanks for admitting you have limited resources for your comments: No one is GIVING boston a pass and as far as Bynum goes, some would say the Lakers play better (in stretches) w/out him. You really can’t use tmac b/c he is a superstar in talent but not in elevating his team.

  • http://slamonline.com Ben Osborne

Everyone needs to read iHeard in the next issue of SLAM. Hysterical, with Stan playing a large role in it.

  • donlaker

PLEASE stan shut your pie hole
and have your team ready for boston /clevland
in round 2 / east finals
your brother is worse than you, he had the houston rockets beating the spurs and the lakers

  • BostonBaller

The Van Goofy’s strike again!! Atleast Jeff tries to be entertaining…

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Cheryl

I know I’m in the minority here, but I love Stan. I dig his passion for coaching and his sarcasm. He’s a funny dude to me. I am glad that I don’t have to hear his voice day in and day out, though. My opinion then would probably change.

  • dips

i give credit to Stan for never considering Marbury as a legit anything and getting Rafer who is solid. much respect to Van Gundy Ball. come playoff time Skip will by dishing out assists on the reg, while Starbury will be benched, staring up at the arena ceiling “getting closer to God”.

  • giogolo

I’m going to comment bout this after the eastern finals.

  • giogolo

    talk talk talk..!!! bleh…

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

Does Stan actually have a bigger mouth than diesel?

  • L33tSauce

Alston has played better than Jameer? Idk if I should take that seriously or not. Lets break it down, no stats involved. Yes, Garnett is the heart and soul of that team, but the man is injured, he wasn’t shot and killed. You know the man is still riding his teamates injured or not(KG is the f-ing man). But Jameer Nelson runs that offense in Orlando. He is a key piece to how their offense works. We all know Orlando gets it to Howard or has Hedo drive the lane, most of the time to kick it back out to the open man behind the arc. Now your telling me going from Nelson, who shoots 45% from 3 point land and isn’t afraid to take important shots is easily replaced by Alston? Not only is Alston shooting a horrible 27% behind the arc, he’s not even at 40% from the field(Nelson is at 50% from the field this year). Yeah, KG means alot, but when it comes down to playing on the court, Nelson is a tad bit more important to his team IMO.

  • http://apeachbasketandadream.wordpress.com/ Peach B.

Win. That’s how you can have excuses. The C’s tore the League up last season, for an entire season. People know what they are capable of already. Unfortunately for the Magic, we don’t know how they would have done in the playoffs with Jameer so they get no excuses. It’s simple. Plus, you can’t complain about people using excuses and then in the same breath ask why you don’t get to use excuses. Man up Van Gundy. Just man the eff up.

  • tdko12

Celtics are using mind games when they say that health is more important than homecourt. When in reality they actually rush KG back, even with limited minutes, just to try and have homecourt in the second round.

  • Blinguo

All this year? Only recently has there been Celtics injury talk after the KG thing, and simply making sure he gets right. Not that far removed from Nelson injury until the trade deadline a month back, all we heard was about Stan’s team and their woe-est-me PG hole. Can Stan be included as a “Van Grumpy” from now on too? Or at least to replace JVG who is now Mike Breen and Mark Jax’s BFF with the jokey jokes and mighty entertaining on air, and thus no longer grumpy.

  • BostonBaller

L33tSauce, Alston must be doing atleast a decent job in Nelsons place or Orlando wouldn’t be in 2nd place (where were they b4 Nelson went doown?)Nelson goes down and they are in 2nd, KG goes down and the C’s lose close games…hhhhmmm I believe KG is more than just the heart n soul of the team plus he wasn’t going to away games when out. Their offense runs smoother and their defense cranks up to top level when KG is playing albeit only 8 mins a half. lol

  • Smoove

lol @ boston haters …yall sound real petty right now, banner 17 is in stone already and noone expected that, so dont count you eggs before they hatch on banner 18, lose the skirts btw

  • ab_40

giving the celtics a good reason to light up their fire even more in the playoffs good thinking ron

  • CHE

I admire the heart of the celts fans…but that doesn’t negate the fact that stan van gundy does have a point. Nelson runs the magic team. KG is a huge impact on his team also. But when you lose a STARTING PG who runs the tempo of the game it’s just as crucial as losing KG the hype man. The Lakers played the Celts without BYNUM last year in the Finals and could care less about Bynum being injured so why the hell should anyone care about the Celts having an injured player, Stop crying about it and play ball.

  • ka

i think hes just sick that ppl still dont give his team credit. hes just repping his guys, im okay with that even if it can backfire.

  • BostonBaller

Thank you for saying we have heart Che but again, no one here is crying about the injuries…The talk of Celtic injuries come from fans who don’t like the team. The only time I hear Celtic injury talk is when the media bring it up and the responses have been “we can’t use that as an excuse, we just have to execute and play better or our bench players have to step up and in doing so they will be ready for the playoffs” If that is complaining then yes there is a lot of complaining… Oh yeah and I think KG is more than a hype man and if you can see past your dislike you’d admit the truth. lol

  • fitzy

@hisham, maybe they wont, but did your team have one last year?

  • Chukaz

You tell’em stan!!!! I know that KG is way better than Nelson, but keep in mind that the Celtics lost one of three future hall of famers, while the Magic lost one of 3 all-stars. Seems to me like the magic took the bigger hit since the celtics got more fire power left over. In mathematical terms: 2 future Hall of Famers > 2 All-stars.

  • Jacob

Michael Wilbon said it right when he said “when you win a championship Stan, you can get the excuses too!” somethin like that either way the man (Wilbon) is a genius

  • L33tSauce

I’m going to have to respond to that by saying Orlando is 2nd now because Dwight Howard is the f-ing man. I don’t like either Van Gundy myself, but Superman is incredible to watch. And Eh, he’s def seen a drop this year even from last years numbers(as far as KG goes). I believe Rondo is really the guy Boston needs. I’m really just trying to play the devil’s advocate. These threads would be boring otherwise. :)

  • ljw

    1) you cant compare the Nelson injury to Garnett because you known from the get go, Nelso is done for the year, you make a trade to fill his spot and do the best you can with the replacement.

With Garnett, you know he’ll be back but you just dont know when, how much he can play when he gets back and if he will be the same player.

    2) When Nelson is one day the MVP of the league or the Defensive player of the year, we can compare him to KG. Just being an All-star doesnt cut it.

Antone Walkers was a multiple all-star, should he be compared to KG?

Here a great list of All-Stars, maybe Nelson will be better then these ( I think so ) but maybe not. Are they in KG’s league

    http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/592889/top_ten_worst_nba_allstars_of_the_last_pg2.html?cat=14

    3) Celtics injuries go deeper then KG. Its KG, L Powe, Tony Allen, Rondo a game here and there. I dont think its the injuries but the timing and the limited bench options when you have a locked 15 man roster, 4 players injured, 2 Rookies not ready yet and 2 new players.

Lastly, I hate whining about injuries to but they do happen. We’ve been hearing all year how the Lakers would have won last year with Bynum but will never know.

I’m just hoping everyone on all teams will be healthy as possible for the playoffs, so the whining can end.

  • http://myspace.com/weezyleezy337 weezyleezy

he’s right. whats the story here?

  • nate the great

    i hate both teams.
    go suns and blazers

  • vtrobot

kevin garnett has more impact on a team than jameer nelson does. there’s no point in debating it. i don’t even care about numbers. there’s more than numbers. is everyone going to doubt the C’s like they did before the start of last year’s Finals? that will be funny. Big 3 are old and frail? Yeah, KG’s hurt. Pierce = frail? Um … Ray = frail? dude is the machine. F sasha. ray is automatic.

  • drewz

this is an irrelevant discussion, because the cavs are gonna win it all anyways

  • http://www.basketballjerseyworld.com NBA-JERSEY-KING

Stan is just trying to get some talk going round and make things interesting for the playoffs… hehe

  • BostonBaller

The crazy comparison of Nelsons season ending injury and KG’s injury (playoff ending?) is just that, CRAZY! Nelson is gone and replaced AND the Magic are doing well and no one is talking about them having no chance yet on the other hand KG is going to come back and there is still plenty of talk about The C’s not being able to do it with him hobbling and not doing anything if he doesn’t play. Stop comparing the incomparable…The C’s will be fine.

  • Geo

The Van Gundy’s both suck and that’s a FACT!
