The Post Up: Rockets Rolling

As the Cavs are doing the same.

by Holly MacKenzie

Again, I worked double-duty yesterday, Raptors/Clippers game 2pm-7pm (and I was LATE, because I couldn’t leave my place until the Cuse game was over), and then had to run straight to the office to work a 7pm-2am shift and then come home, transcribe and thennnn Post Up. And try to catch up on the night of NBA action to write this sucker.

Yikes.

It’s going to be one of those days. Sorry! Here’s what I’ve got (Besides Jonny Flynn’s windmill that didn’t count last night. You all see that?!).

Gotta give you the heads up on the content I’ll be posting on my Court Surfing blog over at thescore.com this week. I happened to have a few fun exchanges with the one and only Raja Bell on Friday night and let me tell you all again: He is THAT guy. I know I say a lot of nba guys are good with the media (and many are), but Mr. Bell, is something. He will talk to you about anything, laugh with you while you rip him for wearing full-length spandex under his dress pants (they served a real purpose), and he’ll even answer your questions in full while the Bobcats PR is rushing you along, counting down the time in minutes, until the bus is taking off.

I was able to set the scene and ask him to take me back to that day, Staples Center, 2001 NBA Finals Game One. That layup at the end of the game. I think I surprised him with the flashback, but man it was cool telling him that was the moment that Raja Bell became a household name for me. It was even more fun to remind him that I grew up a Kobe fan.

So, I’ve got that, plus a TON of stuff with Raymond Felton, DJ Augustin and Gerald Wallace coming today/tomorrow on the site. BETCATS, you will be proud (and pleased), with the stuff I got on your boys.

Oh yeah… I also sat courtside for that game for the first time ever and went home completely unable to sleep after I had the privilege of watching and listening (!), to Larry Brown coach his team in timeouts. Huge thanks go out to the PR team at the ACC for slipping me in courtside for a night that won’t soon be forgotten.

The Raptors took down the Clippers 100-76 yesterday. No, I’m not joking. It was also Chris Bosh’s 25th birthday. And the Raptors 25th victory of the season. Yeesh, it’s been bad for Toronto fans this year. Sometimes I forget just how bad. Yesterday reminded me.

I spoke with Mike Taylor for a long while after the game and will have that interview up later this week on the Court Surfing blog as well. He gave me some crazy info about his dunking history, as well as some stuff on his height that will definitely get you attention.

Okay, enough about that. Just wanted to let you all know, I’m a working girl! The only explanation for slipping on my NBA-watching.

Spencer Hawes with the shocker line of the night: 17 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists. Kinda opened my eyes when I was looking at that boxscore.

Speaking of weird lines, Friday night when the Bobcats were in town, Boris Diaw scored 30 points and attempted zero free throws. How weird is that? The majority of his points came in the paint, yet he attempts zero free throws. Says something about Diaw or something else about the Raptors defense. Either way, haven’t seen that in awhile.

So, the Rockets are now in second place in the Western Conference playoff race, moving a half-game ahead of the Spurs in the standings with their win over San Antonio yesterday afternoon.

LeBron James is pretty good and so are his Cavs. With a victory over the Nets (96-88), the Cavaliers tied the franchise record for wins and they’ve got that Central Division banner hanging pretty from the rafters of the Quicken Loans Arena as well. It’s been a good year for Cleveland Cavs fans.

Has everyone seen the pregame ritual of the Cavs now? The posing by the Cavs and Bron the “photographer” taking their photo? I think it’s pretty funny. Apparently Shaq thought it was weak, so he set up the Suns to be his bowling pins… And, they actually fall on comand. Pretty wild, this nba world.

ps.. Gonzaga. My goodness. Loving the madness. Loving the Orange more than anything.

James had 30/11/8 last night while Zydrunas Ilgauskas had 18 points and 4 blocked shots and Anderson Varejao added 16 points and 11 rebounds. The Nets had 25/9/5 from Vince Carter, 19 from Keyon Dooling and 16 from Brook Lopez. Without Devin Harris they never really threaten the Cavs in this one.

39 points from Dwyane Wade helped give the Heat a 101-96 victory over the Pistons yesterday, but more than his points, it was the two blocks in the final 22 seconds of the game that really sealed the victory for the Heat. In the game, Wade finished with 4 blocked shots. Udonis Haslem scored 16 points, including six in the final seconds to hold off the Pistons. Jamario Moon scored 17 points and Jermaine O’Neal had 14. Antonio McDyess had 16 points to go with 12 rebounds for Detroit as Rodney Stuckey scored 24 points and Tayshaun Prince added 14 in the loss.

Houston won a close one against San Antonio, coming away with the 87-85 victory thanks to big nights from Ron Artest, who finished with 24 points and Luis Scola, who finished with 19 points and 17 rebounds. I didn’t see any of this one, but was peeping the boxscore on Yahoo!Sports whle the Raptors killed the Clippers, then walked into the media room for the final possession. Rather than rush to hear Jay Triano and Mike Dunleavy speak postgame, the various media members gathered around the TV that was showing the game to see how it would unfold. I personally, thought SA had it. I figured Tony Parker would drive and then dish to one of his shooters. Instead, he drove, appeared to get stuck and perhaps fouled by Kyle Lowry and then tossed the ball up (maybe looking for the foul call), and got nothing. A free throw from Houston, a missed three at the buzzer from Matt Bonner, and this one went to Houston. Parker finished with 22 and 12 on the night, Tim Duncan scored 23 points and Ime Udoka added 16 off of the bench.

Oklahoma City was up huge on Minnesota, then allowed them to come roaring back in the fourth, outscoring them 37-13 in the fourth quarter to give them a scare before they were able to snuff out the TWolves for good, 97-90. The win avenged a 42-point loss to Minnesota earlier this year. Kevin Durant led the way with 30 points, 10 rebounds and five assists while Jeff Green scored 17 points and Russell Westbrook had seven points, eight rebounds and 10 assists. The Wolves were led by Craig Smith’s 19 points and 10 rebounds off of the bench while Rodney Carney scored 15 and Bobby Brown added 12.

Chris Paul led the Hornets to a 99-89 victory over the Golden State Warriors yesterday with his line of 27 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. David West scored 23, Hilton Armstrong scored 14 points to go with 11 rebounds and Rasual Butler added 13. The Warriors were led by Stephen Jackson’s 22 points, 10 rebounds and five assists while Kelenna Azubuike added 16 and Monta Ellis added 12.

The Sixers took down the Kings 112-100 last night and I definitely didn’t even catch a highlight of this one. Andre Igoudala had 27 points for Philly as Thaddeus Young scored 22 and Louis Williams added 18 off of the bench. Spencer Hawes had 17 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists in the surprise line of the night for the Kings. Francisco Garcia scored 24 points and Jason Thompson added 12 points and 13 rebounds in the loss.

The last Wade block was a foul. The foul on Stuckey against Wade with about 1:30 left in the game wasn’t a foul; he never even touched Wade. Yeah, superstar status is nice.

  • http://iwantoutofokc.com/ James the balla

    Co-sign Tad. Stuckey got r*ped!!

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

With that said, you still have to block out after getting a defensive stop, so it’s whatever. Hi Eboy.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

TAD: It is what it is(c)?

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

    ^Loser.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Actually, that could apply to both….but since Jukai’s team hasn’t played D since…….ever and TAD’s team stopped playing D in 2006…..I’m not surprised that either of you would know the defense between gettign your sh*t slapped or having a lesser player trying to make a game winning play against the best perimiter defending guard in the league.

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

I hope that wasn’t for me, E. I’m objective and I know you can be. Tell me that Wade wasn’t getting that same call all game?

  • adams

I agree with Tad, too. If you call a foul on Stuckey there then Wade’s block on Afflalo’s three is also a foul. And the non-call on the last play was a joke.

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

    Whatever, it was a foul.

  • http://iwantoutofokc.com/ James the balla

@EBoy lol, you are getting sour over that? And Wade is the best perimeter guard? hahaha. It was a foul man … simple as that. He rode him with his right arm the whole way in and that slowed him down for when he jumped and he got him on the arm and hand in the air!!

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

James: He said “perimeter defending guard.” Do not get in defensive mode now.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

I am objective……you obviously have lost that ability. If there was any sort of “contact” it would have been on Wade’s reach for the ball before Stuckey got the shot up above his waist and Wade bumped his hip as well as the ball…the block was as clean as Megan Fox, fresh out of a warm bath.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Hopefully Marcel will post the block video and you can guys can slow it down, run it in reverse, try to see it from a few different angles and check it 20 or 30 times to see that I’m right.

  • http://iwantoutofokc.com/ James the balla

Wow, Megan FOx out of a bath … that is pretty clean … yet dirty.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

TAD, Adams, Eboy: You guys HAVE to go to Ball Don’t Lie and scroll down to find the latest Garbage Time All-Star strip (entitled, “MVP Couch Rage”).
The comic was MADE WITH JAMES THE BALLA IN MIND!
I’m posting the link to it now in my next comment, but it’s worth NOT waiting for moderation!

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

I hope Wade turns it up and breaks jordans record for most blocks by a guard.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai
  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Did I say the block wasn’t clean?? I’m quite sure I didn’t even mention that. However, he rode him all the way to the basket with both hands. So please do not tell me who has lost objectivity. Again, Wade gets those calls ALL the time. All i’m saying is that the refs should be consistent. Let’s be real, you would be screaming the same thing if the shoe was on the other foot. But like I said, we should have blocked out on the Haslem rebound, so it is what it is. But please don’t tell me I don’t know what i’m talking about. You got me confused with someone else.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Crazy officiating in the MIA-DET game! Seriously! What was different b/n Stuckey’s foul and Wade’s block on Afflalo? To me, they were both kinda no-calls… Wade’s block on Stuckey at the end was a foul on the floor. Wade was pushing off with his forearm. And if anything, he made body contact as well when he went up for the block. Not hating, I truly do not care about either team. Still, Wade is becoming a monster on the defensive end. He rarely misses it when he goes for the passing lane so it’s not detrimental to his team. Anyways, terrible refs.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

I’ll say this……if it was Kobe or Lebron that made the same play, no one would be crying. So please settle down.

  • http://WWW.Yahoo.Com The Kandi Raver

Wade was a beast yesterday and if its a block or a foul it dosent matter now because thats the past. Stucky and mcdyess have a nice pick and roll offense

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

    Well…..except me.

  • Manumaniac

People use to say that Ginobili is a flopper, but I believe the same goes with D-Wade. And Wade doesn’t even bother to “flop” to get the call. He gets it anyway.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Manumaniac: So far you hold the record for the ‘dumbest’ thing said today. It’s early though, so the record could be broken. You’ve set the bar pretty high though.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

TAD, I was actually surprised they kinda iso’d for Stuckey. Prince was doing WORK on the left block backing his man down (moon?) for the little baby hook.

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

If it wasn’t dwade and it was some nobody and the refs make the call everyone but piston fans are complaining about refs deciding the game.

  • http://iwantoutofokc.com/ James the balla

@Jukai … I read the BDL lol. It is very true, not just me… but alot of us white foke fight for KB throught the internet lol.

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Let me be clear: i’m a Wade fan and Eboy knows it. His defense is the best in the game for a guard right now (yes, this includes Kobe). His knack for blocks is amazing. So yeah, he played him tight to the basket, i’m just saying it was TOO tight. Regardless, i’m almost to the point that I want Charlotte/Chicago/Milwaukee to catch us so that Detroit gets a top-13 pick. I’m just not all the way there, yet.

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Not so sure about that, Shia. But you could be right.

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

Damn no love for the knicks making a push tad? After I supported the pistons this season?

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

TAD…..you fu*ker…..don’t give my guy a back handed compliment!!!! But seriously, with your boys playing without the three vets….their youth is WAY more impressive than those three in their spots. I like Afflalo, Bynum, Stuckey and Tayshaun on the floor and McDyess fills that role really well. Maxiell just needs to be consistent and I guess having Rip in the mix is ok……but they have a solid future…..if they can get away from the old guard that will slow their development.

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Oh, forgot about the Knicks hanging around.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

James: Hey, you stick up for your favorite player, thick or thin. My never ending love for Nash not-withstanding, I feel sometimes you push logic to the side JUST a bit (ahem) when talking about Kobe. He’s the second BEST shooting guard of ALL-TIME, undisputedly, and was its best player for the last three to five years. Why not accept that he’s gotten a bit older and two younger, fresher legs have taken his place on top? It’s certainly not going to hurt three-time NBA champion, former MVP Kobe’s legacy.

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

All I know is that Stuckey needs to work on his left hand this off season. He really should tie his right hand behind his back for 3 months.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

TAD: Stuckey needs to work on his jumper. Or work on whatever the hell mentally caused him to lose his jumper. People are beginning to play him for the drive, that’s just not good.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

    Tracy who? Scolaaaaaa!

  • http://iwantoutofokc.com/ James the balla

All I know is it is like Kobe said before he dropped the easiest 61 points anyone has seen. “I haven’t put it in 3rd gear yet”. Kobe is very relaxed right now. He doesn;t drive, barely waste’s energy. I GUARANTEE the playoffs are going to be alot different. He is still the best in the NBA, for at least another year or two. WHat I find funny is, befor ethe Miami Heat game. On the bottom of the screen it said “Wade- Last 13 games averaged 35.8 points”. And the announcers were saying it was amazing and you have to count him for MVP and he probly has it blah blah blah. 35.7, that is what Kobe averaged … for 82 games. That is all I am saying. And Lebron … great season. I hate how he plays and that camera thing they do, reminds me of Ovechkin celebrating.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Hmm… hypothetical: what, in your opinion, are the chances that Kobe is in third gear and that he’s just lost a step?

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

We all heard the same thing last year too.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

kinda like the vogue thing the cavs do, at least more than shaq’s “bowling strike” thingy he does lately with the suns. Maybe Amundson and co. Had enough of the heavy carrying from his superman intro.

  • http://iwantoutofokc.com/ James the balla

O and Wade, fresh legs? hahahahaha good one. The last two seasons he was Greg Oden but short. And now he is fresh legs. Yeah we will see next season if injury Wade comes back. And Kobe … the 4th best player in the league to ya’ll lol. Showed what his 3rd gear was when Wade and Bron were trying to catch Spain in the Olympics. And couldn’t do sh*t. Give the rock to Kobe, and watch what he does with it. There is one stat I am really curious to know. How many touches one Bron/wade/Kobe get a game. And how long the ball is in they’re hand exactly! Very curious.

  • http://iwantoutofokc.com/ James the balla

WHy do they take the picture? Are they saying they are beautiful? They’re great? They like posing? WHat is the purpose, anyone know? It is pretty f*cking gay!!

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

    Wtf is James talking about?

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

And Lebron … great season. / Coming from James the balla, that’s a hell of a compliment!

  • http://iwantoutofokc.com/ James the balla

The cavs … picture taking … posing … before each (home?) game.

  • http://iwantoutofokc.com/ James the balla

@Z lol … I think he is having a great season. But he is not and will never be one of my favorite ballers. Just like as amazing and Dwight is, he will never be. No grace. But anyways … physio. Peace out ladies!!!

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Naw man…..your other intelligble comment before that. You’re one goofy motherfu*ker.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Alright, thank you James. Let’s talk about something else guys.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Kobe in the Olympics is so f’ing overrated! Yes, he is still a killer. But he was NOT playing great basketball. I mean, why would you take contested J’s when you have 4 other superstars on the floor with you? He didn’t dominate in Beijing at all. He was money with the game on the line though, I’ll give him that.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

The NCAA tournament has been really good so far.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

Flash is pretty spectacular on both sides of the court this season. Amazing player, Mvp consideration or none.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Eboy: It really HAS. My bracket has gone down in a fiery blaze though.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

I’m in a 1000 person tie for 60th place in the SLAM bracket.

  • Krishan

Haha, yeah james that picture-taking stunt is pretty lame

  • Manumaniac

Jukai: It seems that my pretty high bar of stupidity bothers you a little bit. But I guess that makes sense since your IQ is to low to understand what’s going on around. Anyway, since you ‘re nothing but words, there is a video here just in case you wanna talk with facts: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aySGUzzxjGE

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

and much respect to your Kb24 love, but rewatch the olympics, please. Wade was the best player in that tournament, and Kobe’s 4pointer late against Spain was a backbreaker sure, but all through Beijing, Kobe wasn’t even the best on his team, Offense or Defense.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Dark: how did Dirk do in the olympics?

  • Myung

Just bought my Playoff tickets for our 1st and 3rd home games for Round 1. Yes!

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

J: can’t quite recall that. Must have lost against Nash and team can…. Oh wait, my bad.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Hey, as a Mavericks fan, you shouldn’t be disrespectin’ Nashty!

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

Myung: never been to an actual nba game in the states, let alone a playoff game. I’m on the eastcoast in next month for business. May i ask how much you paid for your tickets? Are they good seats?

  • Myung

Dark, I got the cheapest ones ($20). I had to buy 4 of them and am not a season ticket holder this year so I had to wait until today to get my hands on what was left. As long as I’m in the Arena, I’m happy… I’ll be there for the 1st and 3rd home games.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

and you should stop trying to get on my case every chance you get, Jukai. I’m fine with ignoring anything you write and vice versa. Oh and i adore Steve Nash, to be clear fantastic player and seemingly person too. But you went after Dirk Werner, i retaliate by thrashing your man. Simple, no? Now leave me be, and have a nice day.

  • http://www.mynameinorange.blogspot.com Hisham

Watch out Dark, or he’ll call you a homosexual

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

James is to Kobe as Dark is to Dirk?

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

The hell was that from, Hisham? Darksaber went on a humongous rant about how he understands why people hate homosexuals and that you can’t expect people to not harrass them. You’re telling that to the wrong person.

  • http://www.mynameinorange.blogspot.com Hisham

Really? that doesn’t strike me as something that he would do, but then again: nobody really knows what anyone here is really about outside of basketball anyway.

  • http://www.mynameinorange.blogspot.com Hisham

seeing as you once called me hitler hahaha

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

He doesn’t strike me as a dude who outrightly hates gays, he just doesn’t get that hate is hate and it should all be treated the same way. Also, I made fun of his mother and he REALLLY REALLLY REALLLY hates me for it. So, yeah.
Out of curiosity, who’s the team you root for Hisham?

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

    I did? Damn. Why’d I do that?

I wish i could catch more NCAA games out here in friggin Holland

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

that again J? Really? Maybe you should re-read the ancient Amaechi post before spreading your slander over and over again? You do what you need to do get through the day ok? As i said last week, i’m done with ya. Hope you like monologue’s. Now, about the rockets. Resilient team aren’t they?

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Alright man, I wont address ya directly anymore. Have a nice day, DS.

  • http://www.mynameinorange.blogspot.com Hisham

I don’t really root for a specific team, as i have absolutely no ties to any NBA city in the US. But i’ve always been an iverson fan so i have a soft spot for the sixers

Dark, I’m not sure how much Playoff tickets are in other cities. Even if you were to ask me about Playoff tickets for Hawks games, I wouldn’t have much to say to you. You’ve got to remember: Playoff games have been few and far between for us Atlanta fans. There’s definitely a mark-up; the $20 seats I got today are regularly $10.

I’m also pulling for the Bobcats. They definitely made the best trades one of the season, getting Bell and 3D and half-pipe.

I’m going to see the Hawks play the Spurs in two days and the Celtics in 4 days. That 7 game win streak is a thing of the past, after we ate some humble pie on Saturday. We need to take care of business tonight against the T-Wolves, and then starting Wed, we get to really see what we’re made of: Spurs, Celtics, Lakers (back to back to back)

Alamo’s, C’s and purple/yellow pant boys in a row? DAMN! Talk about judging team character, Myung.

  • http://double-technical.blogspot.com Zee!

Atlanta is doing the right thing by making the playoffs tix affordable. My cousins are going to the 1st round down there, and they continually laugh at how the Warriors were charging an arm and a leg for playoff tickets a few years back and hadn’t been in close to 10 years. Any team that has had a playoff drought needs to make the bleacher/upper mid bowl tickets affordable so the real fans, not the bandwagon jupmers, or the people with $$$$ who are going to the playoffs games just to be seen. It just makes sense, maybe too much sense.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

thanks Myung. Checking online now for various teams.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

well said zee. It makes too much sense

  • Myung

I expected a mark-up (and had to deal with it last Spring too) so it’s nothing to get worked up about. I’m not familiar with how other teams handle playoff ticket prices, but Atlanta’s is fairly reasonable, I suppose. Also, I’m hoping revenue from ticket sales and extra revenue from Playoff exposure will be used generously in the offseason. The Atlanta Spirit, for those who don’t know, are about as dysfunctional and cheap as any owner/ownership group this league has. As long as the money is funneled back into the team and is used for signing our upcoming draft picks and some potential free agents, I’d be a content fan.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Atlanta is at this point where they could package a few good players into an elite one. When you look at their line up, they’re above average at all the 5 spots BUT it’s not enough to be an elite team. Horford’s future is at the 4. They could ship Josh Smith and change for a good 5, no?

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Chandler will be available. I don’t really know what other big will be on the market.

  • Myung

As a person who’s been highly critical of Josh Smith for the past, I’d be perfectly happy with him on another team, as long as we got something good in return. The BEST time to have traded him would’ve been last summer (in a sign and trade), when his stock was higher. Now, I’m afraid we’ll get $0.70 for a dollar. I will say this in Josh’s defense: I have seen him become a better and more willing passer during the last 3 weeks. I’ve seen pretty much every game he’s played since being drafted in 2004, and his recent unselfishness has really caught me by surprise. His improved play was a huge part of our recent 7 game winning streak. If he can just stop shooting jumpers, I’d love him even more.

  • Myung

BTW, we have a Z and a zee!

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

I’d like him to rebound more too. He’s not a 3, he’s a 4. At least 9 boards a game should be expected from someone with his length, timing and leaping ability.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

damn, i go to slamonline, see the front page rocket’s pic, and I think, finally some respect, some recognition…..never judge a book by it’s cover.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

I really don’t think there are any bigs in the NBA that would make sense to give up Josh Smith for. The dude is just too valuble at the three. Who would replace Smith if he left?

  • Myung

Jukai, I think a line up of Acie Law and/or another PG we pick up this summer (Sorry, but I’m not a big Bibby fan), Joe Johnson, Marvin Williams, Al Horford, and a good center could possibly be a better starting 5 than we currently field, and that’s saying a lot, because our current starting 5, from top to bottom (when healthy), is one of the best in the entire League.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Acie Law is NOT the future. I could see the dude as invaluble coming off the bench, but if you wanna turn away from Bibby (I’m guessing because he’s just going to get older) you’re going to have to find it elsewhere. Having Josh Smith on the floor takes away a LOT of pressure off Johnson. I know this seems silly, since I know on more than one occassion, Joe gets mobbed and Josh simply doesn’t step up… but Smith’s presence on the floor opens up a lot of things, because even if he doesn’t do it as much as he should, people know he can drive whenever he wants.
I’m also not too sure Hortford would be more valuble at the four. He plays pretty close to the basket. Maybe get a center who likes to play farther away?

  • Myung

I don’t necessarily disagree with you that Acie Law isn’t the future, but in the 2 seasons he’s been here, he hasn’t been given a chance to show what he’s got. When he DOES get to play, he is a very good player. I doubt he’ll ever be a star, but he is nearly as effective as Bibby is. Bibby is a terrible defender (he makes Steve Nash look like Ron Artest), and I admit he is often a money 3 point shooter, but he is also very streaky. Mike’s best asset is obviously his leadership and experience, and THOSE things I will give him a lot of credit for. Those are priceless commodities, and I’m fine with him being our PG for now… but when the season’s up, I think it’s time to let him walk. As I mentioned above, I’m not saying Acie Law needs to be the starting PG. If Rick Sund can find us a better PG, then so be it.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Lol, Atlanta seems to have two 3.5 in Marvin and Josh. Josh is less comfortable on the perimeter and doesn’t shoot like Marv. Maybe I’m just hating on Josh but he DOESNT get to the rim at will. On transition, he will bang on you that’s for sure but in the halfcourt he can be stopped. The only way he gets to the hoop is with a first step going to his left when the help is late.

  • Myung

Also, I’d agree with you that Horford would probably be better at the 4 (and in a recent interview on an Atlanta sports talk station last week, he pretty much said he’d prefer playing the 4)… but let me ask you (I’m asking in a nice way, Jukai), how many Hawks games have you seen, to say Smith’s presence opens up the floor for Joe? Unless you have NBA TV, League Pass or live in Atlanta, I’m assuming you’ve only seen Josh Smith play on TV about 6 or 7 times during his career. Have you seen Josh Smith in a half court offense? He is an AWESOME athlete, but he is a below average offensive weapon.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Rv, sorry. I just can’t bring myself to care about H-town. I don’t know why but I hate watching them play. Even with T-Mac on the floor.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

The Hawks need a center that plays away from the basket…may I present exhibit A: Mark Blount? Yes? You would like him? Please take him.

  • Myung

Mark Blount for Solomon Jones, straight up.

  • Myung

eboy, would Chalmers be OK without his BLoUNT?

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Myung: I do have NBA TV and League Pass. I watched the entire Hawks series against the Celtics last year, so that’s seven games right there. On average, I see the Hawks around 10-15 games a year. I DON’T, admittantly, watch them often, and Josh goes from having huge streaks of awesome games to being nonexistant, so it’s possible my opinion of him was formed from the former hot streaks. I think you’re underrating him as an offensive weapon, but the dude needs to work way better without the ball: when you have the athletic ability like he has, and you have Bibby and Johnson on your team, you have no excuse for not cutting around and finishing their passes.
When it comes to Hawks knowledge, of course I’ll defer to you Myung. But Acie Law, I dunno. Unless Acie is gonna be a scoring PG and Johnson will control tempo, I think Acie isn’t starter quality at the one. I watched him a lot at A&M, he doesn’t do well in the flow of an offense and I question his court vision.

  • Myung

Fair enough, Jukai. If you watched Acie a lot at A&M, I might need to defer to you as the Acie Law expert because his Hawks career thus far has pretty much been defined by 3 or 4 minutes of action per quarter, at the most. I like what I see during those spurts, but it’s not enough for me to really get a good reading on how he’d be as a full time starter.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

And I’ll add, out of every single first round playoff game, the Heat vs Hawks game will be the most fantastic by far.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

    Very cute, Myung.

  • Myung

And btw, Jukai, if you watched the entire 1st round series, you pretty much saw the absolute best of Josh Smith and the absolute worst. I can honestly say, he exceeded all sorts of expectations I’ve ever had for him in games 3 and 4. In game 3, he had 27 pts, 9 boards, and 6 assists, and shot 3 for 6 from downtown. In game 4, he had 28 pts, 6 boards, and 7 blocks, and hit TWELVE of 13 FT’s (this stat is astounding if you’ve watched him shoot FT’s during his career). But if you watched him in the decisive game 7, he was 3 for 11 from the field and had more TO’s (5) than boards (4). I believe Josh Smith is neither of those players. He isn’t as good as the Game 3 and 4 J Smoove, and he isn’t nearly as bad as the Game 7 one. I personally feel like his ceiling is about 17 ppg, 9 rpg, 3 bpg. Those numbers are VERY solid, but they’re not All Star worthy, and I know on this very site just a year ago, a handful of people who’d probably never seen one single Hawks game before the Celtics series were anointing Josh the next sure-fire Eastern Conference All Star forward. I know I hate on him a lot, but in all honesty, I’m still a fan of his; I’m just harder on him than any other Hawks player, probably because I feel like he could so much better if he just made better decisions out there on the court.

  • https://twitter.com/TheDiesel Anton

    Jermaine O’Neal is…clutch?

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

E, does Spoelstra have a genuine dislike for Beasley or is the fact that Chalmers gets away with the same lapses that make Beasley ride the bench a byproduct of the worst back up pg situation in the L? / Jukai, I don’t know man. Josh Smith is not very skilled, IMO. Timing on blockshots from the weakside is kind of the only basketball skill I can think of for him. The rest is done on pure athleticism. He’s not even that good of a finisher unless it’s a dunk. Then again, maybe I’m just a hator of Josh’s game. I dunno.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Myung: he’s sorta got Marion syndrome. Not attitude wise, but game wise. He wants to be a guy who plays on the ball, who creates his own shots and has his jumper feared just as much as his inside game. He plays defense hard but he better get some damn offense.
If Josh Smith just played in the Hawks offense and worked better without the ball, he’d be a helluva lot more valuble.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Anton, it was all about pride for JO yesterday lol. After having his sh!t sent back twice by Maxiell, he had no choice.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Z: Oh no, I agree 100%. He’s NOT skilled. But he’s one of the most athletic players in the game, and I think he can get by on that a bit more than you can. Once again though, defer to Myung, I don’t focus on the Hawks that much.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

Z, winning isn’t about caring, the numbers are there whether people like them or not, yet it’s like they don’t even exist at times.

I had forgotten about Acie Law and his no-spin jumpshot.

  • Myung

Good win by the Heat yesterday. I think this battle for the 4th seed is going to go down to the wire. Can someone please explain to me why the Pistons are so bad on Sundays? I know they’re dealing with a lot of injuries, but their Sunday record is awful.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Z….I think Spo has a bit of a personal gripe with him….just because he is so into defensive minded guys and Beasley is really not that yet. i think he has more of a man-crush on Udonis honestly. And yeah, Chalmers makes a bunch of bone headed mistakes….but he plays good D (although yesterday showed differently)so that gives his leahway rope some extra length.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Eboy, is Beasley THAT bad of a defender? I know he’s not great, but I’ve never seen a situation where he’s constantly burned like Nash/Kidd.

  • Myung

Mike Bibby is offended that you didn’t include him in your above sentence, featuring “Nash/Kidd.”

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Anyways, if Beasley is not the starting 4 on that team by next pre-season. Then Spo deserves to get ganked! There was an article on Ball don’t lie talking about how he was doing all kinds of windmills and kissing the rim after practice (such a goofball though, lol). So the athleticism is obviously there, the feel for the game and the knack for scoring was always there. FREE BEASLEY! Question: if the draft could be mulliganed, would you take Lopez at the 2nd spot? This might be a stretch but I’m starting to think that he’s the best player in this draft. Not necessarily ROY, but best player still. Think about it, he’s the only rookie that doesn’t have a major flaw in his game.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Jukai….he’s not quite that pourous. he just doesn’t get body positioning and is 8 times out of ten slow on his help rotations. it drives Spoelstra nuts. If he was a late round pick….the pressure and the expectations would be well hidden….because he was the highest pick in the history of the Heat….there was so much expectation and without the floor time….it’s been kind of unfair to expect a dude to get his game right with limited minutes. Hence the Chalmers comparison…..he’s been starting since the 1st game of the year….he’s had his chances to pass/fail…Beasley needs that same time to work into his game/role.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

    Calderon feels slighted as well.

Z, I’m telling you man – Jermaine O’Neal is the next Kobe. Does nothing for 3.9 quarters (offensive boards) and when the game is on the line he’s all “this board is mine.” Team doctors treated him for shortness of breath after gasping that he made an offensive board and a basket.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

  • Myung

Bryan, I’ll certainly admit I’m being hard on Josh Smith. I nitpick his game more than anyone in the League. Then again, I’m not Jay Bilas either. I DO see Josh as a bona fide NBA player (and often, he is a very good one), not an utter failure, as Bilas predicted. As for his shooting form, I think it’s OK in mechanics (he’s definitely methodical on his release), but the most troubling things to me are his FT % (last year it was 71%; this year’s it’s down to a DwightHoward-esque 56%) and 3 point %. For his career, he is a 26% shooter from downtown. So far this season, he’s shot 66 of them, which is 66 more than he should’ve attempted. By contrast, Al Horford has attempted ONE (and I’m sure it was a full court heave as time was expiring), even though he is a better shooter, mechanically than Josh. I simply wish Josh would focus on his strengths and stop thinking he is a great shooter (which he is not).

  • Myung

It is actually pretty hilarious to watch the crowd’s reaction when Josh shoots a 3. When Bibby, Marv, Joe, and even Mo Evans launches one, we all put our arms up, hoping the ball rips the net. When Josh launches one, you’ll see a lot of people going, “Oh no!”

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

I can agree with that assessment.the ft% turned my head also, his form isn’t what I would call textbook but its not ronnie brewer or shawn marion like either. He has the ability to hit jumpers just he should probably leave it for practice until he gets consistent.

  • Myung

Some guys who were just considered amazing athletes have actually worked hard on their jumpshots and have become very good shooters (Ex. Vince Carter, LeBron, Amare Stoudemire, Iguodala). I’m sure they put in hours and hours of work to improve their J’s. Even Mo Evans on the Hawks, who wasn’t much of a 3 point shooter in the past, has become a fairly consistent threat if he’s wide open and when he’s not shooting from the top of the key. The thing with Josh is, he’s about to finish his 5th season in the League. He can’t use the “he’s just a young guy so he’s got time to improve” excuse for much longer. I just wonder if Mark Price (our shooting coach) can do for Josh’s shot what he did for Marvin Williams and his 3 point stroke. And the thing is, I’d be OK, even if he ultimately DIDN’T improve his jump shot(I DO want to see his FT% to go back to 70+% though), as long as he wasn’t so in love with it.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Talking about forms, you’d never guess that Dwight was so sh!tty at the line by looking at his release. It’s actually quite decent with some arc, good backspin and all. It just never goes in lol.

  • http://twentythreenine.blogspot.com Russ Bengtson

Josh Smith is a wealthy man’s Tyrus Thomas. And Vince Carter’s three-point shot is a thing of beauty.

Spencer Hawes, you aint tight man.

  • Myung

Russ’s “Josh Smith is a wealthy man’s Tyrus Thomas” is a very accurate assessment.

It must pain Bulls fans to know that they traded the poor man’s Josh Smith for the poor man’s Tim Duncan (Lamarcus Aldridge).

Myung, do you REALLY think LaMarcus Aldridge would have done better in Chicago’s system than Tyrus Thomas?
    Really?

    Cause I do! hahahahahaha Russ!

  • Myung

What do Adam Morrison, Tyrus Thomas, Shelden Williams, Patrick O’Bryant, Saer Sene, J.J. Redick , Hilton Armstrong, Cedric Simmons, Rodney Carney, Shawne Williams, Oleksiy Pecherov, Quincy Douby (No doubt Mario Chalmers’s favorite player, other than Mark Blount), Renaldo Balkman, Marcus Williams, Shannon Brown, Maurice Ager, Mardy Collins, and Joel Freeland all have in common? They were all 1st round picks in 2006. Yikes.

  • Myung

Portland had the 4th and 30th pick in that draft, yet they ended up with Lamarcus Aldridege, Sergio Rodriguez, and Brandon Roy (as well as this Joel Freeland cat who may or may not ever make it over the Atlantic Ocean). Not a bad draft night for the Blazers. If they had taken Horford or Durant (is it too early for me to call Oden a bust?) in 2007, how scary could their team have been?

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Apparently, Bill Simmons will not rest until everyone acknowledges that: 1) Oden over Durant was a big mistake 2) J.Kidd for DH + picks is one of the worst trades of all time. Can’t say that I disagree, esp. on 2).

  • Myung

They’ve had 3 All Stars from that class: Michael Redd (2nd rounder and the best player from that class), Jamaal Magloire, and Kenyon Martin. The other three good players from that draft year were Mike Miller (he was the ROY) and Hedo Turkoglu and Jamal Crawford. I think 2000 just might be the worst draft class in the last 18 or 19 years.

  • http://mindyourbusiness@getalife.com Allenp

Beasley is THAT bad on defense.
But, he’s smooth as silk on offense.
Josh Smith sucks you in, but he never produces like he should. Way too many jumpers and his motor isn’t on high unless it’s a BIG game. Plus, he pouts and wants to play the 1 on fast breaks. He should only fill the wing, but he always wants to handle the ball and that usually means a turnover or horrible shot.

Allen… I bet you don’t even watch that many Hawks games… yet you gave the same assessment I would give. You’re on point, sir.

All you have to do is watch one or two games.
It’s obvious why Mike Woodson gets so mad at him. I like Josh Smith’s skill set, but I hate the way he uses it in most games.
Against the Celtics, we saw his ceiling. He was a BEAST on defense, active on offense and just killing himself. But he only does that 20 percent of time, once every five games. Most of the time he’s trying to prove everybody wrong who said he was only an “athlete” and couldn’t shoot.
Sometimes these players get so caught up in proving people wrong that they hamstring themselves. If Josh played more like Shawn Marion used to play in Phoenix, he would average close to the same stats easily. He actually might put up 23 a game, because he’s a lefty and he has better size on the block.

It’s sad that the Rockets are doing great without him right now. It will be even worse if they get past the first round without him this year. I just really think that the T-Mac that we’ve known for years is finished!

  • Teddy-the-Bear

The Rockets are winning it for T-Mac. Don’t feel bad.

Hahaha look at the standings on NBA.com. 2. Houston, 7. Utah. This is just getting crazy now!

Allenp, co-sign, I said the same thing a little while ago. Dude needs to play off the ball, and he’d be invaluable.

The three best players in the league are more than enough for consideration. Yao and ROnron arent even on the bench for mvp worthyness this year.
