Tony Parker: Le MVP Candidate?

by Marcel Mutoni

The MVP debate this year has centered around three players. LeBron, Kobe and D-Wade. Though it’s pretty clear to everyone that James has the award all but locked up, the complete list of candidates continues to take shape.

Tony Parker’s name has now been thrown into the hat by his teammate, Tim Duncan.

CBS reports:

Parker was brilliant Wednesday night with 42 points and 10 assists, helping the Spurs solve their recent struggles closing out games in a 102-92 victory over the Hawks. Parker’s performance was so good, it prompted Duncan to say he deserves to at least be in the top five on voters’ MVP ballots in a few weeks.

“I think absolutely,” said Duncan, a two-time MVP. “Of course I’m biased, obviously. But with the position that we’re in — second or seventh in the West, however many games it can switch — we’re right in the mix with that. The amount of injuries we’ve been dealing with all year … he’s keeping this team consistent. He’s been the consistent one all year long. Absolutely, he should be at least given an opportunity to be one of those top five.

Parker is having the best season of his career, and has beautifully steered an aging, injury-depleted ship in the brutal Western waters all season long. He certainly deserves to have a couple of votes thrown his way.

    Mais oui, pourquoi pas, hmm?

  • CHE Posted: Mar.26 at 11:02 am
    Uh NO

  • scott Posted: Mar.26 at 11:02 am
    No way.

  • scott Posted: Mar.26 at 11:03 am
    1. LeBron James
    2. Dwyane Wade
    3. Kobe Bryant
If you want a dark horse candidate it would be Dwight Howard.

  • Prison Mike Posted: Mar.26 at 11:03 am
    Iverson for MVP!

  • CHE Posted: Mar.26 at 11:03 am
Roger Mason would be more of a MVP candidate for the spurs. He consistently helps the spurs win games this year. Night after night he pulls tricks from his sleeve.

  • CHE Posted: Mar.26 at 11:05 am
Scott i agree with your order of the mvps. If dwade had a better record i would have him at the number one spot. this fool is playing at a HIGH LEVEL sense the olympics. Amazing year for him.

  • Ritchie Posted: Mar.26 at 11:05 am
    YES!YES!YES!

  • Jukai Posted: Mar.26 at 11:08 am
Honestly? This one is for Ciolkstar.
Lebron would get my first place vote. Parker would get my second place vote. Wade gets a third beacuse he’s losing the energy sooner than I expected.
Tony Parker is a far greatest point guard than anyone ever knew.

  • TADOne Posted: Mar.26 at 11:08 am

  • Fred34 Posted: Mar.26 at 11:09 am
Et en plus il pine une minette – une vraie

  • ciolkstar Posted: Mar.26 at 11:10 am
Tony is not an MVP candidate this season, he’s having a geat season. but je’s struggled with injuries and has not consistently been as good as Bron, Wade, or CP3 or Kobe. But an ALL NBA (2nd/3rd?)TEAM selection would not be out of order.

  • CHE Posted: Mar.26 at 11:11 am
Parker is a great point guard if he play a little defense from now and then. Wade has MUCH better defense and is playing with a team with less talent than the spurs. Granted the spurs are dealing with alot of injury problems. I just don’t see how Parker can be in a race if 5 guys are ahead of him. Lebron, Wade, Kobe, Howard and Ray Allen (who has carried his injury prone team)

  • ciolkstar Posted: Mar.26 at 11:12 am
WHOA! Jukai surprising the hell out of me there. I think he should be ALL NBA 2nd or 3rd team. My MVP ballot really still goes: Bron, Wade, Kobe, CP3.

  • CHE Posted: Mar.26 at 11:12 am
dayum and i left out CHRIS PAUL. I have offended the NBA gods. forgive me

  • Jukai Posted: Mar.26 at 11:13 am
Really? You don’t even agree Ciolkstar? This dude who shouldn’t even be a top five level point guard is dropping 40 and 10 what seems like nightly, kept his team SECOND IN THE WEST with Manu and Duncan out more games than they have actually played, and with their second best player being Roger Mason Jr, which isn’t a good thing. I think it’s undeniable this dude deserves some recognition. He’s doing more than Dwight and CP3 anyway.

  • ciolkstar Posted: Mar.26 at 11:14 am
Parker is a good defender, he just doesn’t gamble for steals that often. He does pretty much exactly what Pop wants him to.

  • ciolkstar Posted: Mar.26 at 11:17 am
Timmy hasn’t missed that many games, Jukai, Just a couple recently. I’m pretty sure TP missed more early on. he’s really hit his stride now and is playing some of the best ball of his career. I’ll say he’s a top 3 PG in the league, and on a given night he can be number 1. But it hasn’t been there all season. The award is Lebron’s anyway. I will, however, be pushing for an ALL NBA TEAM selection.

  • Darksaber Posted: Mar.26 at 11:19 am
Nov 5th @ ‘Sota. 55 & 10 in an overtime game. then injured, then comes back weeks later to quietly pick up where he left off. Dude is on a tear this season. MVP? Nawww, the usual suspects can fight Keyzer Soze (Bron) for that. But he should be considered and get a votes. not that they mean anything, but it would be a nice touch to be considered amongst the best by the US-media.

  • Yann Blavec's wife's husband Posted: Mar.26 at 11:25 am
Wait a minute. Switch Parker for Nowitzki and make any other point guard a starter, and los Spurs would be numero uno, easily.

  • Darksaber Posted: Mar.26 at 11:28 am
I LUV Dirk’s game, big time. But umm, not quite sure that statement isn’t quite right? Tony has always been an integral part of that spurs team. Pop would get epileptic episodes if he had to deal with Dirk’s average D. (although he has great hands and does challenge layups/Dunks more than ever)

  • Kozmic Posted: Mar.26 at 11:43 am
ya right!! Be bias Timmy we wouldn’t blame you, but don’t make me laugh!

  • ciolkstar Posted: Mar.26 at 11:55 am
I have no idea what Yann Blavec is talking about. Tony gets so much of his production by scoring in the paint. THATs what he gives the Spurs, Dirk would just be another (VERY good)jumpshooter. But in that same vein, I think the Spurs could try to make a run at Okur this offseason if he ends up the odd man out in Utah. Okur’s not good defensivly but he’d make The Spurs’ offense much more efficient/explosive. It would be pretty much impossible to double Tim with a big, and you know Pop loves three point shooters. It’ll depend how high the market for Okur goes, we won’t be able to pay him 10 mill, but I could see maybe 7-8 mill per year, for like 4 years…

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Mar.26 at 11:58 am
I don’t think it would be out of line for him to get some top-five MVP votes. Tim Duncan isn’t prone to hyperbole.

  • Tariq al Haydar Posted: Mar.26 at 12:06 pm
OK… The MVP is LeBron. That’s done.
    2 & 3 are Wade and Kobe.
    4 & 5 are CP3 and Dwight.

  • Z Posted: Mar.26 at 12:13 pm

  • riggs Posted: Mar.26 at 12:17 pm
    MIERDE!

  • Yann Blavec's wife's husband Posted: Mar.26 at 12:18 pm
I said the Spurs would be better with Dirk and without Tony, you let el Manu run the point, et voilà. But it’s difficult to compare them since Tony’s a pg, and Irk is a 4.

  • Darksaber Posted: Mar.26 at 12:21 pm
Z: très biens ecrit. Mais devant D-Will? Tu ne croit pas vraiment? Est personne ne parle de Dwight, parce que Orlando ne gagnent pas seulement à cause du Howard. Je ne trouve pas qu’il joue au niveau de Keyzer Soze et Wade par example….

  • Darksaber Posted: Mar.26 at 12:23 pm
Manu? running the point? in the nba? occasionaly he takes liberties on the argentinian national team and brings the ball up, but even there, he doesn’t “run the point”. Ah whatever. It’s a mute point, no?

  • Yann Blavec's wife's husband Posted: Mar.26 at 12:28 pm
I think that if Dirk had El Manu and Timmy as teammates he would be an MVP candidate. Who’s his best teammate ? An old Jason Kidd, Erick Dampier ??
Je pense que si Dirk avait El Manu et Timmy comme coéquipiers, il serait candidat au titre de mvp. Quelle est son meilleur coéquipier ? Un vieu Jason Kidd, Erick Dampier ??

  • Yann Blavec's wife's husband Posted: Mar.26 at 12:30 pm
Maybe I’m wrong when I say Manu could run the point. Peut-être que je me trompe quand je dis que elManu pourrait mener le jeu.

  • Yann Blavec's wife's husband Posted: Mar.26 at 12:32 pm
Darksaber, what do you mean by “mute point” ? Excuse me I’m french.

  • TADOne Posted: Mar.26 at 12:32 pm
I do want to bring up something…I think the Spurs are starting to roll at the right time. Think about it, TP is playing his best ball in years, Pops has been resting Timmy, Manu is just coming back from injury, and the Spurs have new players to compliment the core in Mason Jr, Bonner, and George Hill. If they keep the 2nd seed in the West, they won’t have to face the Lakers until the WCF. I’m thinking they are sitting pretty right now.

  • TADOne Posted: Mar.26 at 12:34 pm
Oh, and I forgot about Drew Gooden.

  • Darksaber Posted: Mar.26 at 12:34 pm
Hey it’s cool Yann, everyone’s entitled to their opinions. Btw, how cool is it to be on Slamonline France right now? Everyone’s conversing in French Tony would be proud. Magnifique.

  • Darksaber Posted: Mar.26 at 12:35 pm
@Yann: i meant the point wasn’t really worth discussing (Dirk switch for TP) since Cuban would never sign off on such a deal, in my opinion.

  • Michael Posted: Mar.26 at 12:37 pm
mute point means a point you make whilst being completely silent. he may have meant moot point possibly

  • Darksaber Posted: Mar.26 at 12:37 pm
TAD: Is Pop resting Timmy out of Luxury or necessity? Have you noticed that he’s been wearing kneecap stabilizers for weeks now (those fugly grey ones with the blue ring around the knee itself). I think Timmy’s knee’s are giving out on him after so many Nba games.

  • Darksaber Posted: Mar.26 at 12:38 pm
thanks Michael. i did mean moot point.

  • Michael Posted: Mar.26 at 12:39 pm
@Darksaber, sorry to be one of those guys, but that mute/moot thing is a pet hate of mine :)

  • TADOne Posted: Mar.26 at 12:40 pm
It is probably a bit of both, Dark. Regardless, they are still a very dangerous team.

  • Michael Posted: Mar.26 at 12:43 pm
at what point do the spurs have to look past the Timmy era? they seem like such a smart organisation, but the time will come when the big 3 is down to a big 1 (TP), do they tank for a year and fluke the number 1 pick again when a once in a generation power forward is in the draft. It has worked before.

  • Darksaber Posted: Mar.26 at 12:44 pm
Are there any once in a generation pf prospects out there?

  • Darksaber Posted: Mar.26 at 12:45 pm
Michael: i really meant, THANKS. I hate making spelling mistakes, and i flunked that one. No harm done.

  • Jukai Posted: Mar.26 at 12:46 pm
Unless Manu can make a full recovery, they’re not even my top three teams in the west.

  • Yann Blavec's wife's husband Posted: Mar.26 at 12:49 pm
C’est clair c’est trop cool!!! It’s better than basketsession anyway !! I don’t think the switch would be possible. I also think, as SCoop Jackson said about Jason Williams in the ROY run with P Double and Half-Man Half-Amazing, that the point guard position is the hardest to play. And, finally, I’m tired of the French media kissing Tony Longoria buns.

  • Darksaber Posted: Mar.26 at 12:51 pm
    hihi, “buns”…

  • Tyrone Shoelaces Posted: Mar.26 at 12:52 pm
Co-sign CHE, first thing that popped into my head.

  • Tyrone Shoelaces Posted: Mar.26 at 12:57 pm
The “Uh NO” part lol. Lots of respect for TP carrying an injury-riddled spurs team to a top playoff seed, but there is NO WAY he gets mentioned in the Top 5. Tim needs to get his head checked.

  • TADOne Posted: Mar.26 at 12:59 pm
Jukai, you can’t be serious? Who do you have ahead of them?

  • Darksaber Posted: Mar.26 at 1:02 pm
Juks, gotta agree with TAD on this one, Spurs have been consistent since December. They ARE top 3 out west.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Mar.26 at 1:11 pm
Why in the world aren’t Yao Ming and/or Ron Artest even considered for MVP? They’ve carried their team so far, without T-Mac. I know they aren’t going to win the MVP obviously, but they need to be considered; you know, talked about.

  • ciolkstar Posted: Mar.26 at 1:13 pm
…people having grammatical “pet hates” (I think you mean “pet peeve”. There. How does that feel?) is my biggest pet peeve…

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Mar.26 at 1:14 pm
Wade should not even be second in MVP. Who did the Heat lose to last night? The Pacers for cryin out loud!

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Mar.26 at 1:15 pm
And they aren’t even top 3 EAST.

  • ciolkstar Posted: Mar.26 at 1:16 pm
Sometimes I think Jukai writes things just to write them. Earlier today Tony P was your second MVP(presumably because the Spurs have been so good, even without Manu) now the Spurs aren’t top 3 in the West? I mean, define “completely healthy”. I don’t think Manu will be able to get to 100% but he’ll get back to being Manu soon enough.

  • Darksaber Posted: Mar.26 at 1:18 pm
    damn, ciolk with the mini-burn

  • ciolkstar Posted: Mar.26 at 1:21 pm
Oops, you said “makes a full recovery”, not “completely healthy”. You’re correct in that the Spurs don’t have a chance against the Lakers unless Manu is out there causing havoc, and he definitely needs to be healthier than he was during last years WCF. SO I guess, I sort of agree, though I’m not completely sold on the Jazz, sometimes they look like world beaters (usually at home) and other times they seem to be destined for yet another conference semi-final loss.

  • ciolkstar Posted: Mar.26 at 1:26 pm
Way off topic, but I think a Nuggets/Hornets first round matchup will be extremely entertaining if things shake out that way.

  • TADOne Posted: Mar.26 at 1:28 pm
I agree Ciol. I think a Billups vs. CP3 matchup would be intriguing.

  • Jukai Posted: Mar.26 at 2:08 pm
Ciolkstar: I think Tony SHOULD get the MVP -BECAUSE- he has carried the team like he has, which I think isn’t a top 3 team in the West. Without a fully healthy Manu, you have Parker, Tim Duncan (who is of dubious health as well), and then a bunch of nicely used but still second string players. The days of Bowen and Horry are over, I think Mason is a bit overrated, Hill is not effective when playing second fiddle to Parker, etc. etc.. You have to try and work Manu into a rotation and limit the minutes of those playing around him (Mason and Hill) hoping that it wont break their rhythm and effect their game.
Of course, a fully recovered Manu changes everything, because that dude can work miracles.
I think the Jazz can beat the Spurs in their current state. Of course the Lakers can. I also think the BLAZERS (gulp) can take out the Spurs in a seven-game series only because of their youthfulness and athletism is bound to slow the Spurs down.
Once again, my statement came that Manu would not be completely recovered, and I don’t expect him to be, really.
A fully powered Parker/Duncan/Manu is nearly unstoppable.

  • Anton Posted: Mar.26 at 2:09 pm
    sacre bleu!

  • Jackie Moon Posted: Mar.26 at 2:12 pm
    Tony Parker > Chris Paul

  • TADOne Posted: Mar.26 at 2:16 pm
    Chris Paul >>>>>> Tony Longoria

  • Anton Posted: Mar.26 at 2:27 pm
Btw, congrats Jackie Moon. I heard you and James the balla bought a condo together.

  • KobewWearsAPurpleThong Posted: Mar.26 at 2:34 pm
    Le’ no. 1)Le’bron
    2)Le’Wade
    3)Le’Truth
    4)Le’Douche (KB24)

  • Double R Posted: Mar.26 at 2:34 pm
Unfortunately, Tony will probably not recieve any votes because groupthink had LeBron winning before and shortly after the season started

  • DiZzY Posted: Mar.26 at 2:45 pm
    “Fred34 Posted: Mar.26 at 11:09 am
Et en plus il pine une minette – une vraie ”
    ça c’est de l’argument basketballistique !!!!
    lol
serieusement je le vois pas du tout mvp (pas cette année en tout cas)

  • Jesse Bielasiak Posted: Mar.26 at 3:03 pm
I think Tony Parker certainly deserves a few votes, but he’s not going to crack the top 3 so what’s all this fuss for? And yes, Chris Paul is a better point guard, but Parker has had a more “valuable” performance for his team this season than CP3 has for the Hornets.

  • catalan Posted: Mar.26 at 3:05 pm
joking? the real MVP is in L.A., #16.

  • whooo! Posted: Mar.26 at 3:31 pm
obviously there’s a difference with who’ll be mvp and who deserves votes. you are given a ranking, and guys usually get votes when they’re not close to being #1. parker deserves some votes, just as pierce deserves some. but really, it’s about lebron and kobe (wade’s record isn’t good enough), and lebron deserves it this year.

  • Witness Posted: Mar.26 at 3:34 pm
what about chris paul? the man is putting up better numbers than he was last year. his team might not be as good but…

  • truthteller Posted: Mar.26 at 3:37 pm
Tony Parker is definately an MVP this year if:
    LeBron James breaks his ankle,
    Kobe Bryant breaks both wrists,
    Dwayne Wade breaks his back,
Dwight Howard breaks both of his legs,
    Chris Paul Breaks his arm.
if all this happens, then yes Tony Parker is the MVP for 2009. No doubt!

  • Witness Posted: Mar.26 at 3:38 pm
@ truthteller: if all that happens then peirce is the mvp. right?

  • John D Posted: Mar.26 at 3:40 pm
I think some of you guys are only looking at the headline and missing the part where Duncan said he should be in the top 5. He didn’t say Parker should win it, he just said he should be in the discussion.

  • Sarah Posted: Mar.26 at 4:11 pm
I think it’s fair to say he should get some votes/be in the discussion. And, just to throw it out there, I don’t buy the Blazers beating the Spurs in a 7 game series. Maybe a few years down the road, but not now.

  • niQ Posted: Mar.26 at 4:11 pm
sure he deserves to be in talks. but this year is seriously lebrons.

  • nate james Posted: Mar.26 at 4:18 pm
    WADE = MVP

  • truthteller Posted: Mar.26 at 4:35 pm
    Witness,
Oh yeah, I forgot about Paul Pierce! If Paul Peirce gets hurt than Tony Parker is MVP!

  • what Posted: Mar.26 at 4:43 pm
How the F*CK does Chris Paul not get more MVP recognition? Tony Parker is nice and he did carve up the Hawks’ defense yesterday but MVP? Are you serious? If there’s ANY point guard who deserves MVP recognition this year it’s CP3. It’s a damn shame that D-Wade, who can barely keep his team over .500, is an MVP candidate while CP3, whose team is in the race for the Southwest Division title, is apparently not.

  • dubya816 Posted: Mar.26 at 4:43 pm
Wade is in no way an MVP an MVP has to come from a legitimate title contender hence LeBron, Tony Parker, Kobe, Paul Pierce, and Dwight Howard are the ones I speak of. Legitimate contenders and the best players on the best teams. Discussion over.

  • what Posted: Mar.26 at 4:45 pm
And I’m not trying to come off as a Parker hater. I think he’s great. He’s just not an MVP on a Duncan-led Popovich-coached team. Especially not when CP3 is the ONLY reason the Hornets are in the playoff race.

  • Josh D Posted: Mar.26 at 4:47 pm
parker may not be a MVP candidate, but he’s had a phenomnal season and he deserves some Credit for carrying the Spurs for the last month or so

  • scott Posted: Mar.26 at 4:56 pm
Miami won 15 games without Wade last year. Wade is healthy this year and Miami will probably win 45 games. That is a huge leap and most of the turnaround is attributed to Wade’s health. Wade is without a doubt an MVP candidate.

  • Kas Posted: Mar.26 at 5:23 pm
Man, Kobe is the MVP. I’m not even a Kobe-lover(altough I’m a James hater), but he clearly deserves it. James sorely lacks killer instinct (Along with real game, not just strength). If James wins the MVP, I’m becoming a Euroleague fan.

  • scott Posted: Mar.26 at 5:30 pm
    Your becoming a Euroleague fan.

  • Kas Posted: Mar.26 at 5:34 pm
Sadly, it looks like it. It’s a shame for the league. You all will realize this in a few years. At least I’ll get to see Lonny Baxter on a weekly basis

  • Joel O's Posted: Mar.26 at 5:35 pm
The “Lebron lacks real game, he’s just strong” argument sounds a lot like “Shaq sucks, he’s just big and strong”. And both are wrong.

  • Kas Posted: Mar.26 at 5:39 pm
You can’t honestly say that you would rather watch James than some of the smoother players in the league(Kobe, Wade, Ray Allen etc.)I’m not saying he is a bad player, I’m just saying he aint fun to watch, and there are players in the league more deserving of the MVP. And his dunks bore me.

  • Joel O's Posted: Mar.26 at 5:43 pm
It’s funny how our sports stars can never get anything right. Drop a coupla 40 point games a la AI in ’99 or Kobe over various stretches in his career, and you’re “selfish”. Rack up triple double after triple double and lead your team in points, assists and rebounds… and you lack killer instinct. Life’s tough for an MVP candidate.

  • Joel O's Posted: Mar.26 at 5:47 pm
But isn’t “not fun to watch” quite far down the hierarchy of criteria for being the MVP? Sure, choice of MVP is really subjective, but I don’t think being fun to watch is as important as individual performance and team success and a whole bunch of other things.

  • Kas Posted: Mar.26 at 5:57 pm
I do. I’m a fan of the game, not of the wil column or box score.

  • Kas Posted: Mar.26 at 5:58 pm
    *win

  • Kas Posted: Mar.26 at 6:05 pm
And I have evidence supporting the theory that James molested Eddy Curry a while back. How’s that for an MVP?

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Mar.26 at 6:19 pm
Forget Parker, why the hell is WADE getting all this recognition? Yes, he kicks total @ss, that’s true.
    BUT THE HEAT ARE TURRRRRRIBLE.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Mar.26 at 6:20 pm
By recognition, I mean MVP recognition. Not “good player” recognition, because he’s obviously one of the best players.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Mar.26 at 6:23 pm
The Heat lost to a Troy Murphy-less INDIANA PACERS!!! My goodness, that is some turrrible shat. Troy Murphy is their second best player, their only inside presence, and their only rebounder. Seriously all Miami had to do was Quintuple-team Danny Granger, and they would’ve won 110-20. IT WAS THAT SIMPLE. But they lost! To the Pacers!

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Mar.26 at 8:50 pm
But yeah, no knocks on Wade’s game, whatsoever. And that SLAM covered was mos def’ deserved. Just he barely has any help whatsoever.
Glad I’m the last commenter standing here…

  • Jc Posted: Mar.26 at 9:32 pm
Tim Duncan: il est fou. Tony ce ne MVP candidate pas. Je ne conprend pas.

  • Jackie Moon Posted: Mar.26 at 9:58 pm
Smush Parker is fun to watch. And Anton is still not even a little funny. But Will Ferrell is!

  • Dacre Posted: Mar.26 at 10:29 pm
Dear Russ Bengston – hyperbole…? Not prone to hyperbole…HA..Tim Duncan isn’t even prone to answering questions beyond a yes or no answer..?!!? Hyperbole…your awesome.

  • Jesse Bielasiak Posted: Mar.27 at 12:38 am
Yo chill on hating on the Pacers. JJ has been ill of late, and everyone’s stepped up their game a little bit since Granger went down and kept it up now that he’s back. We are a perfectly mediocre team these days.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Mar.27 at 12:59 am
    Gotcha, Jesse.

  • DruWil Posted: Mar.27 at 4:17 am
If Tony wins the MVP this year, I’m packing my bags and move my ass to France

  • tealish Posted: Mar.27 at 4:50 am
Obviously not MVP, but definitely ALL-NBA 3rd team, if not 2nd.

  • tealish Posted: Mar.27 at 4:52 am
And to all the people up in arms about this article, perhaps “MVP candidate” = Top 12 in the running. That’d be accurate.

  • Alan Posted: Mar.27 at 5:14 am
Pretty obvius this was just a joke by timmy. No way the french frie has MVP level

  • BBAller Posted: Mar.27 at 6:17 am
Even as a long time spurs fan i can’t honestly say TP is the MVP of this League, it’s Lebron or Kobe.He should be in the discussion but really it’s a two horse race. The arguement is who should make it as the All NBA’s first team point guard…TP or CP3,these are the 2 best PGs in the league with Deron W,Billups, and Nash following.

  • BBAller Posted: Mar.27 at 6:25 am
Can anyone tell me, if any player has won the MVP with their respective teams that are not at least in the top ten teams in the NBA, as is the case being made for Wade.

  • Alan Posted: Mar.27 at 8:51 am
I really think there has been at least one, but cannot find it right now. It was in the sixties or seventies. I’m working right now, so look for yourself ;-)

  • SOFOKLIS SCHORTSIANITIS Posted: Mar.27 at 9:01 am
If the MVP was the player with the strongest impact to the direction of a team, somebody who can take a lottery team to the top, then this years MVP is our beloved cartoon…he did exactly this: Detroit was on top of the league with 4-0 and will propably be out of the playoffs if A.I. comes back in time.

Losing the energy Jukai? March has been his best month so far, with February second. I think its more his teamates are getting lazy, assuming Wade can go do what he does every night. And I know he won’t win, and I laugh, the MVP award is a joke. It’s not the MOST VALUABLE getting the award these days. Nash was deserving, but Kobe last year? No. Try Chris Paul. Dirk in 2007? Why? Because you didn’t want to give Nash his 3rd? Reminds me of when they were trying to give it to anyone not named Jordan. This will be year three that the MVP award is botched.

MVP, i dont know. but how about BEST point guard in the league?

  • giogolo Posted: Mar.27 at 4:58 pm
IF only T.park didn’t miss those 4 straight free throws in the final secs. againts the Cs.i wuold believe.
Duncan remains the man on this team..however how far removed he is from his younger days
manu, parker(above avg. obviously) and the rest are good supporting cast who happens to have a brilliant coach if not the bes right now in the league with a brilliant system suited for the Spurs.

Tony Parker better than CP3? That made me chuckle. Good joke Franko.

  • franko Posted: Mar.28 at 9:16 am
L33t: even nash and Kidd are better than C3PO
    sorry
    R2

  • L33tSauce Posted: Mar.28 at 1:55 pm
Even Nash and Kidd? You make them soun like bad PG’s. When it’s all said and done, CP3 will be a top 5 point guard. Someone sounds a bit biased to me.

  • franko Posted: Mar.28 at 9:15 pm
    ok you win.
i want to see both PG face to face at the playoff.
    see you there L33…

Chris Paul vs Tony Parker? Chris is going to make Tony’s head spin all night, but who will win? The spurs, not because of TOny Parker, but because of the 4 big shot guys they have in Timmy, Mason, Manu, and Parker. So you argument there is rather mediocre. I mean I figured Paul’s 22 points 11 assists 5 rebounds and 3 steals a games spoke for themselves. Not enough? 50% from the field shooting, 35% from 3 and 89% FT shooting.
Parker? 22-7-3-1 50% from the field but 30 behind the arc and 79% at the line. And Parkers on a team where he really can’t be doubled up, yet Paul is the center of attention in New Orleans. Tony Parker for MVP? That jokes not even funny. The guy isn’t even top 5(Your buddy CP3 would be though).

What’s wrong about watching the Euroleague?

  • al Posted: Mar.30 at 5:57 am
El candidato a MVP es Pau Gasol. Now seriously, this is a claim just as fair as Duncan’s. I agree Parker has played excellent during the year and I can’t see why some “official” media include Billups among the best of the season and do not count on Parker while his teams (including injuries) and merits are comparable if not better.
On the other hand, no one is talking enough about Gasol I think. Of course he is not winning the MVP award, but he has merit some recognition. His efficency ranking is highest in his team (including Kobe) and his team is a clear title contender. In fact only 4 players in the league are getting better numbers in terms of efficency, being all of them superstars.
This was just a little tribute. You think is fair?

  • Manumaniac Posted: Mar.30 at 6:14 am
Pau Gasol is a beast! He is arguably one of the best players in the league. Personally I think he is one of the top-3 power forwards in the game (Duncan and Garnett the other two). He should definitely be voted to an All NBA Team.

  • [...] provocateur mais, pour une fois, nous n’y sommes pour rien. C’est Tim Duncan, CBS et SLAM qui sont à l’origine de tout ce bruit. Nous on relaie et on vous informe en toute [...]

  • L33tSauce Posted: Mar.30 at 2:45 pm
Exactly. On any other team he’d be better(Talking about Pau).

  • warren Posted: Mar.30 at 6:46 pm
it’ s hard to say who’ s a better pg Parker or chris Paul? I dont no they’ r both great. but iI think a on fire Parker would do better than a hot c. p. so ye I think Parker should get more recognition.

  • Darksaber Posted: Mar.30 at 10:29 pm
Actually prefer watching the “Eurocup” this year. Better refereeing in my opinion, and a lot of different B-Ball philosophies on display in the participating teams. It’s been a blast to watch.

  • Manumaniac Posted: Mar.31 at 3:56 am
These comparisons between Chris Paul and Tony Parker really amuse me. I mean, come on you guys… Tony Parker has two current All NBA Team players (Duncan, Ginobili) on his side and that makes his work alot easier than Paul’s. CP3 is definitely better than Parker and the same goes with Deron Williams.

  • Manumaniac Posted: Mar.31 at 4:03 am
Besides, saying that Tony Parker is better than Chris Paul is like suggesting that Brandon Roy is better than Kobe Bryant. He’s got all the potential to reach his level but he’s not there yet.

  • [...] Parker has been the one constant for the Spurs this season with injuries affecting the team and win column since the start of the season. Aside from the scoring clinics he has put on, Parkers assist numbers have seen a major increase, especially in the last two months, which has even Tim Duncan mentioning Parker as an MVP candidate. [...]

Parker is up there but remember that the media vote and the media vote for Lebron and Kobe
