Your Krypto-Nate shirt Will Have to Be a Bootleg

Because DC Comics doesn’t want the NBA profiting off of their imagery without some form of kickback: “Two days after the 5-7½ Robinson spectacularly won the Slam-Dunk competition during All-Star weekend, the NBA announced plans to release a green Krypto-Nate T-shirt for sale at the NBA Store and NBA.com. One day later, the NBA scrapped its plan because of intellectual property issues with DC Comics, the originator of the Superman comic books. DC Comics’ offices are located on Broadway, near the NBA Store. Robinson’s Krypto-Nate scheme – designed to topple a red-caped Dwight Howard and his Superman shtick – was too close to home for DC Comics. Kryptonite is the green emerald crystal found on the fictional planet Krypton that weakens Superman. The NBA is now looking to involve DC Comics in future Krypto-Nate endeavors, according to a league source.”

Just think. There was a day only a few decades ago when lawyers did not run our society.

This is the gayest thing I’ve ever heard. DC comics should feel like complete @sses for this. I’m really disappointed that I wont be able to get a Krypto-Nate shirt in the near future. Thanks DC comics.

  • witness

    what about superman?

  • Chris

You guys are calling DC comics stupid for trying to get money for an intellectual property they created? With Kryptonite, Krypto-nate wouldn’t exist, therefor this dunk contest would have been incredibly lame. If the NBA is gonna make money off this, why shouldn’t DC?

  • Chris

    *without kryptonite

  • cneww

bummer, i bet that shirt would look pretty cool

  • Teddy-the-Bear

I’ve met my two greatest hero’s, Steve Nash and Ben Folds so yeah….thats all I got. Anyone want a krypto-nate shirt if I design one up? It will be free seeing as there is a subtle endorsement/brand/trademark issue here but then again, I am the guy that runs an optical business called OPTOMETRIST PRIME.

@ dacre: ok. but david lee has to be somewhere on the shirt as a villian.

    and make marbury lex luther.

im not good with comic books.

My professional opinion is that the NBA would win a lawsuit against DC Comics, if it came to that. The design suggests satire, which is a fair use under the law. It seems like the NBA just doesn’t want to alienate such a powerful potential marketing partner.
