All-Rookie Teams Announced

by Ryne Nelson

The head coaches selected the ‘08-09 Rookie Teams, chosing five players for the first team and five for the second team, regardless of position. Coaches were not permitted to vote for players on their own team.

With that in mind, coaches thought much higher of Michael Beasley than did the media, which voted Beasley seventh in Rookie of the Year balloting. Teammate Mario Chalmers also got a little more love than expected, garnering five first team votes despite only three third-place media ROY votes.

Second-teammer, Kevin Love, who ranked third in the NBA in offensive rebounds (first per minute), making him, as the TWolves’ presser made clear to point out, “the first rookie to lead the League in the former category since Akeem Olaujuwon in ‘84-85.” Still no word from Kevin on this honor.

‘08-09 ROOKIE FIRST TEAM
Player Team First (2 pt) Second (1 Pt) Total
Derrick Rose Chicago 29 - 58
O.J. Mayo Memphis 29 - 58
Russell Westbrook Oklahoma City 24 5 53
Brook Lopez New Jersey 21 7 49
Michael Beasley Miami 17 10 44
‘08-09 ROOKIE SECOND TEAM
Eric Gordon L.A. Clippers 13 13 39
Kevin Love Minnesota 7 20 34
Mario Chalmers Miami 5 19 29
Marc Gasol Memphis 2 21 25
D. J. Augustin Charlotte - 17 17
Rudy Fernandez Portland - 17 17
Other players receiving votes, with point totals (first team votes in parentheses): Courtney Lee 12; Jason Thompson 7; Marreese Speights 3; Greg Oden 3 (1); Robin Lopez 2 (1).

Robin Lopez has one strong friend in the media, as the single vote he received was for the first team. Not surprisingly, the only mark the brother Lopez received on the Rookie of the Year ballot was a second place vote.

    In before “Love got screwed”

  • Eboy Posted: Apr.30 at 2:35 pm
    Yes sir!

  • K-Nasty Posted: Apr.30 at 2:36 pm
I’m glad Augustin made it. I think he has a chance to be really good in the future. He reminds me a little of CP3.

  • Czar Ruke Posted: Apr.30 at 2:41 pm
At times Eric Gordon looked like Ben Gordon (in a good way).

  • Coach Master Posted: Apr.30 at 2:46 pm
K-Love got screwed again. Lurch Lopez and Lost In Space Michael Measley are second tier for sure.

  • Gerard Himself Posted: Apr.30 at 2:54 pm
Coach Master: you’ve got to be kidding about Brook Lopez. Second-tier? One of the top rookies of the year man, what are you talking about?

  • YungBolo Posted: Apr.30 at 2:55 pm
I really wish people would have watched Eric Gordon play this year and seen how amazing he is, both ends of the floor. I think Beasley deserved to be on the All-Rookie team…The All-Rookie 6th team or lower.

  • dma Posted: Apr.30 at 2:56 pm
    im okay with this.

  • the baconator Posted: Apr.30 at 2:58 pm
Ten bucks says I can predict Moose’s response: “What, no love for Anthony Morrow?!?” Haha… Seriously though, I can’t believe Courtney Lee didn’t make it. Dude put up way better numbers than Rudy Fernandez or DJ Augustin

  • Squad Posted: Apr.30 at 3:01 pm
am I the only one who feels like Beasley might not even deserve to be on the first team? I love dude more than anyone, but I expected so much more from him this yr.

  • cdef28 Posted: Apr.30 at 3:04 pm
Squad I agree with you. I’d move Gordon up. What about you?

  • chazz michael michaels Posted: Apr.30 at 3:08 pm
beasley is a joke a choke a.. well i dont have nemore rhymes that would humiliate his game but really he blows fo realz move his anus down on tha list make me numba one ho

  • ciolkstar Posted: Apr.30 at 3:08 pm
This is a really good rookie class. Eric Gordon and Courtney Lee are both being slept on. I think Gordon will end up having a better career than Westbrook and maybe even OJ.

  • Dee Posted: Apr.30 at 3:08 pm
That Greg Oden fella was somethin’ else huh?

  • Superman Osman Posted: Apr.30 at 3:11 pm
How did this team not whoop the Sophs again? Ohhhh ya Wade was coach!

  • cdef28 Posted: Apr.30 at 3:13 pm
Ciolkstar it’s going to be hard because Gordon does play for the Clippers.

  • Jukai Posted: Apr.30 at 3:17 pm
I actually agree with Ciolkstar on this one, I’ve seen Gordon play, he’s really an offensive power house, I think he’s smarter than OJ Mayo (less of a chucker, more of an opportunist).

  • sab Posted: Apr.30 at 3:26 pm
ryne - “second-teamer Kevin Love, who ranked 3rd bla bla bla…” - the “who” is redundant in that sentence
woop woop, that’s the sound of the (grammar) police
a couple of strange votes, but then, the coaches probably don’t really give a sh1t

  • Mum-Rar! Transform! Posted: Apr.30 at 3:37 pm
I can’t wait for next year. So Beasley can show what he truly is made of.

  • wayno Posted: Apr.30 at 3:48 pm
Who in the world voted for Oden? He got votes and one of them was a 1st team vote!

  • Josh D Posted: Apr.30 at 3:50 pm
Michael Beasley deserves to be in the first team he led the league in rookie scoring per 48 minutes, i think his rookie year was better than people think

  • BETCATS Posted: Apr.30 at 4:14 pm
    DJ!!! Yay!

  • ciolkstar Posted: Apr.30 at 4:21 pm
I like your assesment Jukai, “opportunistic” is a nice way to describe Gordon’s offensive game. And because of all the “fatty” jokes people forget that he tested higher (in terms of speed, strength, and vertical leap)at the combine than Rose and almost every other rookie guard (maybe even Westbrook. Not sure about that though) He’s an underrated athelete and defender and he seems extremely grounded and well spoken. I’m gushing here, but I’m a big fan of the kid.

  • Tavoris Posted: Apr.30 at 4:34 pm
ciolkstar…I agree about Eric Gordon. He reminds me A LOT of Mitch Richmond (who had a VERY productive career in MJ’s shadow)

  • Diesel Posted: Apr.30 at 4:54 pm
Is it ok to start mentioning Oden as one of the biggest busts of all time? Can you imagine the trailblazers with Durant?

  • Tavoris Posted: Apr.30 at 4:59 pm
Diesel…I still think it’s a lil too early. Even tho he fouls like it’s a GOOD thing, he is still a fairly productive player. And playing CENTER is probably much more physically demanding than any other position, so there is bound to be an adjustment period.

  • Tavoris Posted: Apr.30 at 5:01 pm
I can’t say he’s a bust until he hits like 23-24 y/o and isn’t doin the thang yet.

  • wayno Posted: Apr.30 at 5:59 pm
Is it safe to say Darko is a bust yet…….

  • BETCATS Posted: Apr.30 at 6:02 pm
^no, Darko is a serviceable NBA player, just not a superstar.

  • wayno Posted: Apr.30 at 6:04 pm
Is it safe to call Sam Bowie a bust yet>

  • wayno Posted: Apr.30 at 6:04 pm
    I’ll stop now…sorry….Kwame Brown….seriously now, I’ll stop…

  • ciolkstar Posted: Apr.30 at 6:05 pm
I’m a huge Durant guy and not a big fan of Oden’s game (he seems like a really cool dude though), but its still way too early to declare him a bust. I’m not sure we’ll ever see him play 30+ minutes a night for 70+ games in a season, but if he can help these young Blazers win a chip (or even get to the finals)in the next 5 years or so, then he’s a success. I don’t see him ever being “better” than Durant though, that ship has likely sailed.

  • wayno Posted: Apr.30 at 6:06 pm
Darko is certainly a bust considering the players drafted below him, but yes, he’s not absolutely horrible.

  • Mendel Posted: Apr.30 at 6:21 pm
    C. Lee not making the grid is bull sheet

  • ciolkstar Posted: Apr.30 at 6:21 pm
If Oden is never considerably better than Darko or Kwame than yes, he would be a collosal bust.

  • Jukai Posted: Apr.30 at 7:31 pm
Isn’t Oden ALREADY considered better than Darko and Kwame?

  • wayno Posted: Apr.30 at 7:52 pm
    I’d say they’re even.

  • chiqo Posted: Apr.30 at 8:05 pm
courtney lee deserved more love than he got.

  • Bostwik Posted: Apr.30 at 8:21 pm
    Robin Lopez? First team?
That made my day, even with he swine flu on the loose.

  • CDef28 Posted: Apr.30 at 8:34 pm
Greg Oden is one guy that would have benefited greatly by sticking around college for a few more years.

  • CDef28 Posted: Apr.30 at 8:36 pm
Out of all the Second Teamers, I think D.J. Augustin will have the best career if Larry sticks around a little longer in Charlotte.

  • Justin Posted: Apr.30 at 9:42 pm
Man A LOT of these cats would have been better off staying in college. Its like so much other stuff though, its all follow-the-leader. The potential is definitely there for most, but the productivity has been horrible. Look how hard it is to watch an NBA game compared to a college one, or an NBA game of 20 years ago. People are athletic and talented, but their games really suck.

  • chris Posted: Apr.30 at 11:26 pm
with robin lopez…it was a mistake. Someone picked him instead of brook on accident.

  • nate the great Posted: Apr.30 at 11:40 pm
wtf? gordon finnaly getting love? this guy was my guy going into the draft. i watched him in college and was in love with his game since.
i cant wait for this kid to just murder everyone.
but other than that. YAHH RUDY!!!

  • sab Posted: May.1 at 12:41 am
chris might well be right - notice how Brook Lopez only has 28 votes… (21+7)… i.e. one coach DIDN’T vote for him… and surely Brook’s among your top 10 for the season?!
    haha that’s funny

  • nate the great Posted: May.1 at 1:03 am
haha how can you vote for someone your not sure of?
    lol.
i think people just voted for people who got drafted high.
beasly should not have gotten that many votes.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: May.1 at 1:18 am
    LETS GO ROCKETS!

  • nbk Posted: May.1 at 3:44 am
this robin lopez vote might go down as one of the weirdest mysteries in award history

  • larrylegend Posted: May.1 at 6:59 am
go courtney, proove them wrong next season!

  • Prentice Mcgruder Posted: May.1 at 9:04 am
Didn’t Robin Lopez get a ROY vote as well from somewhere? I can’t fathom what on earth they were thinking. Name and shame whoever voted for him and strip them of thier vote next year.

  • Dean Tharp Posted: May.1 at 11:43 am
    Hellz ya Rudy

  • Justin Posted: May.1 at 11:49 am
Courtney Lee should have been 2nd Team.

  • Tyler_Long_Feather Posted: May.1 at 12:14 pm
What about KT22 he’s a f***in baller he can stroke from anywhere on the court assist board up and wINDMILL IN TRAFFIC

  • Caleb Posted: May.1 at 12:51 pm
Love definitely should have been a first-teamer.

  • Caleb Posted: May.1 at 1:15 pm
That Robin Lopez vote… I’m thinking someone just got the two guys confused?

  • j-arch30 Posted: May.1 at 3:56 pm
Beasley is the best out of this rookie class..if he gets the amount of mins derrick rose gets he could put numbers up..who needs defense..its the nba

  • nba-jersey-king Posted: May.2 at 6:55 am
Beasleys 22 and 15 in a playoff game today showed he belongs on this list

  • Moose Posted: May.2 at 8:42 am
    MORROW!!!

  • bulletsforever Posted: May.2 at 10:13 pm
    no love for javale mcgee

  • bigjos3 Posted: May.4 at 9:12 am
What about my man Nicolas Batum ?

  • Steve NeBraska Posted: May.4 at 12:22 pm
Kevin Love got screwed? I wouldn’t remove anyone on the first team to give up his spot. Beasly’s a beast, Lopez is a legit center with a lot more promise than love, and Westbrook is a jumpshot away from being a 20 point scorer in this league. The other two are indisputable.

  • al Posted: May.4 at 1:19 pm
I believe Rudy is a special kind of player, smart and competitive. Will reach Ginobilli’s level in a couple years, whether in Portland or not

  • jack Posted: May.4 at 3:57 pm
    C Lee got screwed

  • [...] Such positional concern, however, is undoubtedly buoyed by D.J. Augustin’s stated arrival, as the All-Rookie Second Team point man ranked among the top 10 rooks in points, assists, free throw percentage, three-point [...]
