Rose Wins Rookie of the Year

PLUS: Complete voting results.

by Ryne Nelson

Some call him DRose. Others closer to him call him “Pooh.” Recently, “veteran rookie” has been a popular catchphrase. But, now, they can just call him Rookie of the Year.

We know it’s no shocker, but just take a moment to reflect on Rose’s astounding season. Think back to the first couple weeks when most of the experts picked Derrick to finish fourth or fifth in the ROY Race. No doubt the Class of 2008 was the deepest since ’03, and Rose’s consistent and electrifying play clearly placed him as the leader from start to finish.

Upon hearing of the Bulls afternoon press conference, the Chicago Tribune officially reported the story K.C. Johnson probably wrote weeks ago.

It was obvious — and now it’s official.

The Bulls have called a 2 p.m. news conference Wednesday to announce that Derrick Rose has won the NBA’s Rookie of the Year award.

Rose is the Bulls third Rookie of the Year (joining Jordan and Brand) and is the fourth-youngest player to ever win the award. Well deserved. Congratulations, Rose!

    good.

  • Superman Osman

DROOOOOOOSE. Hell of a confidence boost for game 3. Let’s get noisy Chi-town.

Uhh, I’m pretty sure Rose was the favorite to be ROY all season. I mean OJ could’ve challenged, and some people thought Beasley could win, but coming off the bench for 80% of the season ended that. I don’t want to take anything away from Rose, who’s had a great season and looks to continue in the playoffs, but he got more media attention from the jump than pretty much any other rookie.

  • http://www.slamonline.com GotHandles?

    brook lopez ROY

  • http://www.twitter.com/TheDiesel Anton

Perkins promises Rose won’t get ROY next season.

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Well deserved. Now, how about playing some defense on Rondo.

  • Static

It was obvious but much deserved, not to mention being THAT guy who led his team to the 2nd season even thru the “wall.” Ice grill Perkins musta tossed and turned all nite.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Tzvi Twersky

It wasn’t really that close; the race for second is much closer: Brooke or Mayo? It’s a tough call.

  • Rich

DRose, from the Chi, Englewood at that. All us here in Chicago are congratulating our boy. May the Chi please stand up!

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

Tzvi, I like how Lopez played this year, but I’d probably put Westbrook ahead of him.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

By the way, the only three players who were younger when they won the ROY are: Amar’e, LeBron and Kevin Durant.

  • Tommy Patron

    Chicago love.

  • underdog

    No surprise.

  • Superman Osman

That’s some good company poohioni is tied up with. Oh and ciolkstart. More media attention, you’re kidding right? What would the ‘media’ be interested in the city’s native son coming back from a stellar performance in the NCAA until the Final, and was the number 1 draft pick, a one that Chicago fans called the pick of destiny. I mean did you even hear what the odds were? I’m stunned that he hasn’t made it get to his head yet, this ‘veteran rookie’ is the only reason that Vinny Del Negro still is headcoach, and the only reason that the Bulls are back in the playoffs as a .500 team, boy when was the last time we had a rookie that could do all that? Oh and ya maybe OJ Mayo has skills, but he’s a stat padder to the MAX, probably cause of his sh*tty team. Beasley? Don’t make me laugh. Brook Lopez? Let me tell you something, if the Bulls had VC instead of BG we would probably be seeded over Philly or Miami, and I’m not even BS’n. Westbrook is alright but like I said your team has to show change in impact on the L. It’s probably KD getting ROY last year that made it near impossible for him to even compete for it.

  • Superman Osman

    *ciolksta

  • Coach Master

Masters of the Obvious. He will be fun to watch for years. Of course, Jesse Jackson will want to pose next to the ROY.

  • Superman Osman

I hate my keyboard, and sorry for using space for nothing Ryne haha. Ciolkstar you probably get that I tried to correct myself

  • Jer Boi

    SURPRISE!!!

  • http://slamonline.com Yknot

And to think Eric Gordon was the prize recruit from their aau days. Nothing against gordon of course.

  • Textbook

During the AAU days Gordon came from Indiana to run with Rose on the meanstreet express squad for a couple tourneys. I don’t think either was more of a prize recruit than the other just look at their Rivals rankings they were 2 and 3.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

Good point, Yknot. Gordon will still be a top-five player from this draft class. No question in my mind.

  • franko

i miss the jordan, pippen, rodman, harper, longley era.. butt welcome this new kid on the block.

  • Candice

I love D. Rose and I’m watching the press conference right now, he has to work on speaking to the media and giving interviews. BJ sgould have prepared him more on this aspect of the buisness.

  • JoeMaMa

Derrick Rose, Mike Beasley, Russell Westbrook, Brook Lopez, OJ Mayo, Kevin Love, Eric Gordon, Rudy Fernandez…what a great class. And there are others (Bayless, Speights, Lee) who will also be solid.
Rose, though…the best of the bunch.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

    Don’t forget Oden. ;-)

  • niQ

damnnn. altho i don’t disagree.. i would have thought chalmers and love woulda got some more votes.

Robin Lopez making a surprise No. 2 appearance on someone’s ballot.

  • Kihwan

Ryne – my thoughts exactly. Who the f*&k voted to for him as the second best rookie in the L. Whoever it was MUST have mistaken him for his brother.

  • Superman Osman

Maybe Shaq threatened somebody via twitter

  • riggs

dont really care but glad that brook is top 3

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

Brook’s second half of the season got him a spot in the top three. Other than Love and Rose, a lot of these rooks hit some sort of wall during the final months.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Tanny

The guy who voted for Robin Lopez at number 2 must have meant to put Brook. Otherwise he’s out of his mind.

  • Danny W

Russell Westbrook finished behind Brook Lopez? Did I miss something? And where the F**k is Jason Thompson?

  • nbk

Brook Lopez was the most consistent rookie, and was the only one who seemed to improve every night. As i think it was Hursty pointed out a couple of weeks ago, name a weakness in brook lopez’s game. And thompson disappeared after the all star break

  • nbk

    *most consistent arguably

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

    Didn’t see this coming.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

Robin Lopez over Chalmers? Robin Lopez over Rudy? Damn.

  • Superman Osman

Exactly Moose. You didn’t see THAT coming right?

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

I don’t know what the big deal with rudy is…

tf you think he was the #1 overall pick.

  • http://www.basketballjerseyworld.com nba-jersey-king

Looking at that list of players, this is a great rookie class…. but in 4-5 years, Rose wont be the best player of this group. Beasley will easily be the best player of this draft, then Mayo, then Rose. I see Rose becoming another Chris Paul.

  • http://www.basketballjerseyworld.com nba-jersey-king

Having Beasley and Chalmers with Wade will form a great team in the future… and if Miami can steal another big in the mid-teens of the draft, then this team is set for the future

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

That’s a deep bunch indeed. Look at the guys in this batch – the first 7 or 8 guys destined to be All Stars.

  • Todd Spehr

Robin Lopez got a second-place vote?

  • http://www.rich-imaging.com Dutch Rich

    Rudy being hated on.

  • http://www.stonesthrow.com/ Michael NZ

Rose winning… all good of course, but I just CANNOT take these voters seriously. Someone actually truely felt Robin Lopez was the second best rookie? And what about the FOUR third place votes Rose got?! Who are these fools? Awards are dead to me.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

I love How Robin Lopez got one 2nd PLACE vote….thats awesome. That was for that one 14 pt game back in December…

  • jogabonito

Remember when Beasley said he’d win ROY and MVP?

  • http://www.broy7.com/roy/index nate the great

    well duhh

  • http://www.droseroy.com/ airs

rose is really awkward when addressing the press ahha
    but its kinda charming.
    easiest award decision yet

  • Nosebleed Seats

    Who is Nicolas Batum?

  • larrylegend

    c. lee should be ranked higher…c’mon…2 3rd place votes is a shame.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

Is Nicolas Batum over from France yet…?
I think Beasley was talking about his good friend Rose when he said “I’m going to get roy” he meant “I’m going to get Rose to get it”…

  • Cizzo

Rose is still blossuming, but I seen this in the making since last year when he was babying everyboby at Memphis last year. I can see him winning M.V.P. before we actually realize it!!!!!!!!!!
