Flip Saunders is Coming to D.C.

by Marcel Mutoni

It’s not exactly a surprise, as all recent indications have pointed to Saunders taking over in Washington. Practically every media outlet is reporting the same thing: Flip Saunders will be the new head coach on the Wizards’ sidelines as soon as their horrific season concludes.

The Washington Post has more:

As one of the Washington Wizards’ worst regular seasons in franchise history slogs to a close, all signs are pointing to Flip Saunders being named the team’s head coach as early as next week.

A league official and a Western Conference team official both have said on condition of anonymity that Saunders is the top choice of General Manager Ernie Grunfeld. The team official added that Saunders, the former coach of the Detroit Pistons and Minnesota Timberwolves, already has tabbed former NBA player Sam Cassell as an assistant. The officials requested anonymity because they are not at liberty to speak on behalf of the Wizards.

No deal has been finalized, but Saunders is among at least five potential candidates to have spoken with Grunfeld, according to a league source.

Sam I Am and Gilbert Arenas joining forces is clearly a gift from the comedy gods.

As for Saunders, if his players’ fickle health permits it, he should have plenty of opportunities to show off his widely respected offensive schemes with this squad.

As a DC fan, I’m moderately excited by this.

Their offense was never the problem. It’ll be interesting to see what direction they go in the draft.

They really need to just blow up the Wiz and start over at this point. That contract they gave Gil last year is gonna cripple this franchise for the next half decade.

I’m sure he’ll find a good use for”stud” JaVale Mcgee!

I’m sure Flip will solve all their problems.

  • http://www.another48minutes.blogspot.com Gerard Himself

Russ, I dig the sarcasm, but I don’t think the Wizards have too many problems anyway. Health is the only issue. Sure, they’re not very good on defense, but again, health is the issue here.

a good coach who cant win in the big playoff games, hmmmm sounds like eddie jordan to me

  • Smash Boogie

I’d much rather have Flip than Avery Johnson or Patrick Chewing. And really, there’s really no other established coach out there. This team stays healthy and they’re a 5 seed at worst in the east.

Gerard: Yes, but that means the coaching was never a problem in the first place. Do people really think Flip is a better coach than Eddie Jordan? Or is he an orthopedist as well as a coach?

Gilbert + Beetle Man Cassell…..oh boooooyyyy the practices will turn into debates which Sam will always win because he will pull out his rings. Nuff Said.

Wow. I hope Eddie Jordan goes to Detroit.

I’m with underdog. I hope Dumars lets him stay more than a season, too.

  • Josh D(Spurs Fan)

He’s a good coach, he should be able to get them back into the playoffs if they’re all healthy, especially if they get Griffin

  • ab_40

smash, since when is patrick ewing an established coach?

  • Prison Mike

At least he knows who to start unlike his replacement in Detroit.

  • ab_40

well if gilbert is the adult now he says he claims to be… on the court that is hehe they can win 40 to 45 games… cuz you know they’ll try to outscore you a lakers light as you will with a shorter and thiner big three and a weaker bench

  • Harlem_World

Why can’t management grow some balls and admit they made a mistake firing Eddie Jordan? He’s a much better coach for this team and has all the players respect. He was a scapegoat to injuries this year. Horrible decision to fire him, and I would put money on him finishing the season far better than they did if he had stayed. Maybe that’s the reason they fired him – to tank the season and go for Blake?

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

Coaches get hired for their philosophies and fired for their records. Wonderful logic, or lack thereof.

  • cdef28

hey russ loved the vince carter slam article

did they really expect jordan to win w/o his superstar pg and his only true big?! saunders would have donner better? not a bad hire at all, i just don’t get why they fired jordan in the first place.

  • CDef28

Russ props on the slamadamonth article

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Yes Russ, but teams love to have scapegoats. Allen Iverson?

  • http://www.nba.com/suns Dacre

Allen loves to have a scapegoat too.

  • Rod Strickland

Flip Saunders is a good coach but the Wizards main problem is health and continuity. Arenas and Haywood have been out all year and interm coach Tapscott has been shuffling lineups and rotations all season trying to find a combination that works but to no avail because of more injury problems (DeShawn Stevenson, Etan Thomas, Caron Butler). They just need to get healthy.

  • Wayno

Good fit for D.C. if they stay healthy….that’s apretty big if though.

  • http://itsadcthing.blogspot.com Squad

as a wiz fan, i like it, but as always this team’s success is predicated on GilZero’s health and whether he’ll be back to his old self. oh, and fack deshawn stevenson.

  • Slobodan Chutzpah

I think he’s actually the right choice here. He’ll get them to play up to their potential – which is an okay record, followed by a first-round exit.
