Isiah: From MSG to … Florida International U

by Marcel Mutoni

Somehow, you had to have known that he’d find a way to get back into coaching. Where exactly that would take place was the question, and for the time being, it appears to have been answered.

Word has it that Isiah Thomas is on the verge of accepting a job with Florida International University. ESPN reports:

Florida International is trying to hire former New York Knicks coach Isiah Thomas as its next basketball coach, sources have told ESPN.com’s Andy Katz.

A source with direct knowledge of the negotiations told ESPN.com on Monday night that the two parties are working on a deal and it could get done as early as Tuesday. Thomas just has to sign off on the final details.

The source said Thomas was intrigued by FIU’s location in South Florida, its growing football program and its over 30,000 students. The source said Thomas was looking for a fresh place to start and that, despite other previous NBA and college opportunities, this is the one that finally piqued Thomas’ interest. The source said negotiations are moving very quickly.

Isiah has an eye for college-level talent, as his NBA Draft record clearly indicates … but, damn. From Broadway to FIU. That’s quite a steep drop.

Should he accept the gig, Thomas will have his work cut out for him. The FIU Golden Panthers haven’t had a winning record in close to a decade. Best of luck, Zeke.

UPDATE: The Sun-Sentinel reports that FIU has indeed hired Thomas as its next head coach.—Ed.

They should give it to Tim Hardaway- another great prospective coach. Duh.

  • a_whiteman

    Could this actually work?

Now he’ll be close enough for long range targeting.

  • Tuomas

If still possible, FIU needs to reconsider. If not, good luck.

  • nate the great

the golden panthers? sounds like a wnba team or something.

  • Joe

I as surprised Isaiah would go to a program whose initials say: “F*ck Indiana University”!!!!!

I used to teach there. Decent school. Nice location, esp. the north campus. Sports teams? The football team tries real hard. The basketball team, not so much. He just wants to be in South Beach. He doesn’t care about the step down, since how much lower can he go?

  • juliusj14

MJ’s son goes to UCF not FIU.

  • riggs

he would be the only coach to bankrupt and close down a school.

  • juliusj14

*is goin to UCF i mean. Central Florida

  • Josh D

You know, i don’t know which one is the worst team FIU or the Knicks

Seems like a couple weeks ago I said on here Zeke would make a good college coach. Yea its a steep drop, but if he has a couple of good years he’ll have his eyes on another job. There’s this team in the Big East that was terrible in conference and is in his hometown. hmm…

Maybe he’ll freeze Jordans son out like he did Jordan in his early All Star games.

A joke about the attempted suicide?
Damn, homie, you need to take a step back from the computer screen and reevaluate your value system. Seriously…

  • that dude

This really needs to be a reality show

  • frank

youre right. this could make an awesome reality show.

  • Dave

AllenP, you need to reevaluate talking about value systems on the internet.

  • Surreal

Isiah is gunning for a record. The most stints f***d up by a coach/executive. CBA, NBA now college hoops.

  • Slobodan Chutzpah

Does this mean the NCAA is a couple of years away from filing for bankruptcy?

  • Slobodan Chutzpah

And yes, I do mean the whole damn system. It’s Isiah, people.

This may be a good move for Thomas AND the university. He will bring in decent recruits and he will change that program around in time. He is coaching for FREE folks!!! He is donating his salary back to the school. Giving back to the game! This will be a media frenzy for a little while and should be fun…

Basically, he is paying FIU to let him coach!

  • stokes

First and foremost we are talking a future hall of famer. And second when he coached the knicks, the knicks were a couple years from being a 40 win team. Plus he had Starbury on his team being his usual distraction (except with Boston, but give it time). Besides think about the coaches that sucked in the NBA that went to coaching college, alot of them are successful. Not saying he will be but a least give the man a chance.
