Perk Has a Message for Rose

“He’ll never have another game like that against us.”

by Marcel Mutoni

Of all the great individual performances this past weekend, you could build a legit case for Derrick Rose having the best (and most memorable) one. According to Kendrick Perkins, however, you should savor what took place, because it’s the last time the Bulls’ point guard will do anything of the sort this season.

Perkins says that his team will not be humiliated on their home floor again, and certainly not by a rookie.

From the Daily Herald:

While the Bulls were thinking positive during a Sunday practice in downtown Boston, a few miles away in suburban Waltham, Celtics center Kendrick Perkins offered some interesting smack talk about the Bulls and rookie sensation Derrick Rose.

“Everybody has their night,” Perkins said, according to the Associated Press. “I know it won’t happen again. He’ll never have another game like that against us.” Perkins was referring to Rose’s 36 points and 11 assists in a 105-103 overtime victory on Saturday.

I don’t know about stopping him, but we can probably count on one thing in the next game: The C’s big men will be a lot more aggressive with Derrick when he gets into the lane, after blowing by Rajon Rondo and whoever else has the misfortune of trying to slow him down on the perimeter.

Game 2 jumps off tonight in Beantown.

I doubt Derrick get’s close to those numbers again this series. And let’s not forget how good Rondo was too.

  • http://www.broy7.com/roy/index nate the great

Rondo will do amazing game 2. i think Rose will do ieght as well.
LETS GET THIS SHOW ON THE ROAD!!

  • jdubbs29

…then he burst into tears and broke down, sobbing.

  • Ses

Sounds like alot of Hate coming out of Beantown! Take your thrashing like a man!!!

  • Sesa

These bullying thing only work for one season. This season, evry team discovered that once they stand up to the C’s bullying they might have a chance to win

  • riggs

but he has a point, and the same applies to noah and T2

    Go Bulls

  • German Reignman

“He’ll never have another game like that against us.” if Kevin Garnett returns, he did not necessarily add

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

“He’ll never have another game like that against us”
33 and 10, then? That would be perfect.

  • Sparker

boston started slow last year, and limped through every series until the finals. even with that, i doubt chicago wins another game

  • Clockwork

Well Tyrus Thomas draining long jumper after long jumper certainly isn’t gonna happen again anytime soon.

  • http://theghostofroyhobbs.blogspot.com Mo Charlo

Kendrick Perkins forgets that he’s the third best defending big man on his team. And the best is on the chilling list.

  • Diesel

I’d take the comments a bit more seriously if they were coming from someone who actually has talent and is good enough to affect the outcome of the game. Instead we have to hear it from someone who gave up 17 rebounds to a guy half his size. I’d say worry about noah having the game of his life against you first, perkins you fat sack of fat.

  • Diesel

Sparker can I ask what your basing your comments on? What advantages do you see in the Celtics that are so great that Chicago doesn’t have a chance in the next 4 games after winning the first? These 2 teams, as currently constructed, have met only twice this year and the Bulls have won both times. Please tell me what you see that will so drastically reverse the trend. I’d really like to hear it.

  • http://where-basketball-b-longs.blogspot.com B. Long

Hey Jukai, remember the convo we had last summer about Rose? You member?

  • Sparker

hey diesel – i’m not trying to be a harda** at all; and i didn’t mean to suggest chicago didn’t have a chance. but if you want to know what i think the celts have over the bulls:: 1) playoff experience 2) coaching 3) paul pierce (who, when he wakes up, is more dangerous than any player on the bulls by some distance. there’s also a long history of plucky 7s or 8s winning the first game, then getting swept. but like i said, i wasn’t trying to get up into anyone’s face or anything; that’s just my take

  • Candice

I don’t think Rose is expecting anything less. It’s not like he went around bragging. He was more upset that he had 5 To’s. The Bull’s as a whole are expecting this. I think the whole Bull’s team is expecting this. I have seen Rose get knoecked around and it hasn’t detered him yet. I don’t think Perkins scares him plus the team is going to stand up for him. Miller,Noah, and Tyrus are not going to let them beat Rose up.

  • daniel

I wonder when people will catch on to perkins’ fake intensity. T him up!

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

    Kendrick Perkins is fugazy.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Whatevs, I remember the Pistons saying that LBJ would never have a field day against them again after he scored the last 30 points in a game 2 years ago… Talk is cheap. Rose didn’t caught them off guard, he carved their defense because KG wasn’t there patrolling the paint. End of.

  • Candice

Russ here in Chicago they are predicting a blow out in Boston favor. What’s your take on tonight game?

  • Diesel

The way I’m looking at it Sparker, even if Pierce does have a great game, him and Rondo alone can’t win this thing. I think Allen will have problems getting his shot off against Gordon. I know its crazy to say Gordon is a good defender, but he actually is against spot up shooters, its when he gets posted up (which allen doesn’t do too much) that he has problems. I think the Bulls have the advantage at the 4 and 5 spots..and a higher quality bench with Thomas, Hinirch, and Miller. Not to mention that Boston’s shaky start last year was because they didn’t win a single road game in the first 2 rounds. The Bulls have 4 or 5 players that if hot, can legitimately drop 30.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pYa5u-lPS8c MooButter

Kedrick Perkins is a thug. I’m sure he’ll be stepping up his “defense” in the paint. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZ2k62jByuA

  • riggs

itll be funny if boston can only win home games this playoff season

  • riggs

and by home games i mean road games….damn mondays

  • J.B

one big flagrant foul in the making..

  • Tommy Patron

Boston better be careful. The NBA likes to instantly anoint stars. I predict a flagrant-fest, if they go that route.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

    Keep your mouth shut, Perkins.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

Perk is a beast. But Rose is going to keep doing damage, he lilekly won’t shoot as well, but tye Bulls atheeleticism causes the cs major problems.

As long as Derrick Rose is Chicago’s number 1 option he will put up numbers. 36 and 11 i doubt but a 25 and 8 average for the series I don’t. If he does put that up it is still embarrassing for Boston. My question, when is Kendrick Perkins going to have “his night.”

  • http://basketball-reference.com nbk

TAD – What defender in the L can gaurd Rose? Rondo is going to get 1st team this season, that should tell you how good Rose is not how overrated Rondo is.

  • Diesel

Perkins was a lot cooler when he was the fat kid in that Good Burger movie. Rondo has to appreciate Perkins challenging the guy he’s checking to play even harder.

  • http://mindyourbusiness@getalife.com Allenp

I knew D. Rose was nice, but it wasn’t until about the fourth quarter when he isoed up on the right wing, hit Rondo with a little right to left crossover and then left him standing there that I realized that Boston has a big problem.
I have never seen another guard just iso up and blow by Rondo with no pick. Ever. That is a huge problem.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

If Brad Miller isn’t high as hell (4/20!) tonight, I hope he punches Perkins right in his big mouth. And, much as I’d like to say otehrwise, I think the Celtics roll tonight. Let’s say 104-91.

  • Jake

I have faith in the Bulls if for no other reason than that they put out the Heat after they won the chip.I think that game 1 showed Chicago don’t give a f*ck,they are out for blood.

  • Mike C

I say Rose booms on Perkins’ head at least once before this series is over.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Oh man, a Perkins v Miller battle would be epic and make my entire month.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

Chicago definitely isn’t intimidated, but the Celtics aren’t just going to roll over and die like the 2007 Heat.

  • http://basketball-reference.com nbk

  • http://www.droseroy.com airs

    are you kidding?
rose is so very capable of putting up numbers like that on this squad.
and if they do double up on him, just count on him having nearly double the assists as last game.
looks like derrick is still gonna have to earn some more respect, but i don’t think that’s gonna be too hard.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

Someone should tell Perky that he shouldn’t be talking whilst KG is hurt.

  • http://www.galatasaray.org madamerica

    Rose will score 40 tonight.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

The Celtics D is not feared by anyone when Garnett is not barking orders and roaming in the paint. Rose will get his. That said, some of ya’ll are forgetting that PP is STILL playing for the Celts. That’s a proven winner and he we have seen him go into ‘there’s no effing way I’m losing this game’ mode on countless occasions. He went toe-to-toe with Bron in an epic game 7 last year and outplayed Kob in the Finals. I’m not counting Boston out until they lose 4 games to Chicago.

  • donovan

Anyone see in the recent Sports Illustrated players poll where Perkins was voted the player who more than anyone else, thinks he’s better than he actually is?

  • http://basketball-reference.com nbk

Z all of what Pierce did last year was with KG standing behind him, and the energy Pierce saved on defense more then likely played a huge roll in his “no effing way I’m losing this game mode” Although I’m with you not counting Boston out, I also think its gonna take more then Paul Pierce deciding to take over for Boston to get past the lowly Bulls

  • Diesel

All the Bulls have to do today is double Pierce and make the rest of the Celtics score. Other than Rondo, I don’t think anyone else on the team is going to step up. And I’m including Ray Allen because he will be too worn out with the fast pace of the game and chasing BG around screens to be effective on offense. With KG, the Celtics had good enough D to force a half court game. Now their fat a$$ front court can’t even get back in time to set up the D.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Diesel, you do know that Pierce has lit up double teams before, right? He used to be the focal point of Boston’s offense for… oh… about his whole career.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

Paul Pierce was gangsta back when KG was a Wolf.

  • Diesel

Z- yes I do, and how far did that get the Celtics in previous years? I agree Pierce is a great player, but it never produced wins until KG and Allen came along. Like nbk said, Pierce was able to go off last year because KG was helping shoulder some of the defensive and scoring load. There’s no one there this year to help out.

  • http://basketball-reference.com nbk

He was gangsta watching the playoffs Russ. He has never been anywhere in the playoffs without an all star caliber 4 next to him.

  • Lz – Cphfinest3

Perk is just mad that the Celts lost every chance of repeating. My money is on Pooh to torment them at least once more this series.

  • Bruno

I bet derrick rose’s gonna dunk on perk next game

  • Bruno

    f@ck perkins
    bulls in 6

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

Paul Pierce got to the ECF in 2002. Yes, he had Antoine Walker, but Tony Battie and Eric Williams both started over 70 games that year. And in the deciing game against Illadelph in the first round, P2 dropped 46. Kevin Garnett didn’t make him a great player.

  • Lz – Cphfinest3

I think it will go 7 rapaz.

  • Lz – Cphfinest3

Hope Bulls prevail vs. Celts Bruno. And Russ is ever so right about PP, no matter what KG did(and he did a lot)for Boston it was PP who stepped up to the challenge and went to another level in the Finals. I remember him being the best player in that series, by far, because he wanted it more than everybody else (ok maybe KG wanted it just as much, but his nuts still shrink on O under pressure). PP was the MVP and rightfully so.

  • Perkins_isabigfathack

Perkins is a fat hack–if he tries to pull something dirty and throw his body into Rose when he’s 40 inches in the air– Stu Jackson better be all over that

  • http://basketball-reference.com nbk

No kevin garnett didn’t make him a great player, but there is one constant to Paul Pierce’s playoff success, that is an all star caliber 4 with some very productive role players. He is missing his 4, hence them being down 0-1 to the youngest team in the playoffs

  • Diesel

That was 7 years ago. Pierce is not winning this series by himself. Especially if he needs to be active on defense gaurding a respectable John Salmons. Pierce is the best player in this series, but no one is winning this series by themselves. He will tire himself out playing lock down D and being the main option on offense game in and game out.

  • http://basketball-reference.com nbk

LZ – Ray Allen had a pretty dam* good finals as well. Its not like PP was the only one doing it, he led the C’s in scoring 3 of 6 games. Ray Led in 2 and KG led in game 1. Offensively he does his thing but never successfully in the playoffs by himself.

  • Brian

The Bulls are going to get reamed tonight by the NBA special. Rose, Thomas & Noah already have 2 fouls on them.

  • Diesel

Brian, keep in mind that Perkins just basically announced that he’s good for at least 1 flagrant foul.

  • Coach Master

I’m scared. Perky is sooo tough and Rose is sooo precious.

  • http://mindyourbusiness@getalife.com Allenp

I’m glad Russ included that info about Pierce with Antoine Walker because it saved me the typing.
People who think Paul Pierce didn’t have success before KG know nothing. Pierce had more success than KG ever had.

  • Marco

Russ thank you for bringing back the fugazi thing. We need more tim thomas in our lives

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

Michael Jordan never won anything in the playoffs without an All-Star three. The next player who does it all by themselves in the playoffs will be the first. Or LeBron. Whichever. Paul Pierce is a f*cking beast.

  • Diesel

That’s my point Russ. Who’s going to help Pierce out this year? I don’t think Rondo and Allen is enough.

  • http://basketball-reference.com nbk

Nobody said he wasn’t, we all just said he won’t win by himself, which he won’t.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Win what? The title? No. But he can get by the Bulls w/o KG. Nobody on the Bulls can deal with him, not even close. And as much as Rose was beasting in game 1, Rondo had 29-9-7 with only 1 TO so it’s not like he’s killing him out there.

  • Marco

The bulls will win maybe one more game, in chicago, and nothing more

  • http://basketball-reference.com nbk

Nobody ever said he couldn’t get by the Bulls without KG, but with KG we wouldn’t even be having this conversation. You also won’t say the Celtics had a successful season if they lose in the 2nd round now will you? If they are struggling against Chicago in round 1 at home, even if its only after 1 game, my hopes/prediction of them vs cleveland in the ECF are almost completely dead. Hence me tagging this as another unsuccessful playoff trip for PP without an AS4

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

I think the question is who is going to help Rondo out? Ray can shoot but if that part of his game is off (which is rare, but happened last year too) he doesn’t do much else to help the Cs win. I think the Bulls will end up winning the series in 6 or 7… but I don’t really trust them (of the f.ucking refs) in Boston in a deciding game 7.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

nbk, if the point that you’re trying to make is that you need good players to win games then i’m with you. who ever had successful playoff trips by themselves? bron in 06? dream for the first title? that’s about it. kobe didn’t win until pau came so is he in that boat too? / at 4:15 you said that it would take more than pierce beasting to get past the bulls. that was your argument. and i totally disagree. / you also said that he was saving energy last year because garnett had his back. do you realize that he guarded lebron and kobe in two consecutive series? i don’t care who’s behind you, you’re not saving anything when guarding these two.

  • thatsthetruthruth

perk’s ‘tude ain’t bullying, just frustration at reality setting in. no dynasty, old stars, terrible cap situation. they’d be smart to blow it up after this season instead of waiting for kg, shuttlesworth and the lie to find the fountain of youth. looks like its back to being the has-been celtics for another extended run. boston – where irrelevance happens.

When BG is feeling it like that, he’s basically unguardable. He’s not even trying to beat his defender but rather just taking a couple of bounces to launch it in rythmn. All you can do is contest the J.

although im heartbroken, this game doesn’t really say much for the celts. and im still fairly confident about bulls in 6.
bulls were down by 4 without rose in the 1st quarter, even with some of those bullish calls Rondo was getting.
we led by 3 at half.
and the C’s had to rely on a nearly-last second shot to squeak out a win.
i called a big game for gordon and salmons, and salmons is gonna get his too.

  • ti-sizz

superman, the Celtics have the poise to beat them at Chicago, at least once. They have the reigning Finals MVP and one of the best marksman who’s ever played in the league. They will ignite, especially since they both want this second championship. Look at how rayray played this game. Anyways, then all they have to do is handle business at home. Wasn’t last year a lesson enough, when they were taken to game 7s and 6s, everyone started saying how they weren’t good enough to take the whole thing. In the NBA, it’s all about matchups, and the Bulls have a pretty good one with their youth and athleticism. But at the end of the day, the Celtics will prevail, just because they know what it takes to succeed under pressure. Gordon can get hot, but if he keeps firing away without a conscience even when not shooting particularly well, it’s going to be hard for the Bulls to win. The same goes for Salmons. And we’ll see if Noah or Thomas will cough up some TOs or make some stupid fouls at the end of the 4th….. I actually don’t dislike the Bulls, i just don’t think they have enough to defeat the Celtics, so may the best team win… we’ll see what happens

  • Superman Osman

Man RayRay was flaming tonight. He probably was in the gym since game 1 ended. We’ll see indeed my brizz. But for now I’m pretty much glad that this is the series that the Bulls got matched up in. One hell of a confidence booster to your young guns, as the more confident young Hawks once experienced.

  • diesel

I don’t understand you Celtic fans that are talking sh*t. You were a second away from going down 0-2 at your own court. You guys don’t have a chance in hell in Chicago. Especially if Powe is done and you have to keep your fat a$$ 4 and 5 out there all game. Paul Pierce getting fouled at the end of the half and the refs calling it a shooting foul was the worst call I’ve ever seen. The only thing dumber was Perkins flexing like he did something in the game. Bulls win the next 3 and put the sorry Celtics out of their misery.

Ses, I don’t feel the hate from Hulkins just the normal monotone angry face. lol Plus why didn’t I see you saying the same about Dampier who’s words were much stronger? Could it be you dislike The C’s more? lol ciolkstar, if you check Ray’s stats from last years playoffs you will see that he helped in other areas AND his scoring was better than his heralded slump would suggest. Russ & Allenp are right about PP’s success w/out KG but I wouldn’t say he had way more than KG. Rose would torch any team and has so this is no surprise.

Beantown! Take your thrashing like a man!!!

diesel, I may have missed it but where have you read the smack talk from us Boston fans. Just becuase we are not abandoning our team like a lot of fans would do and we are defending our team does not constitute smack taliking.
