KG: Out for the Playoffs?

A dark day in Beantown.

by Marcel Mutoni

And here we were thinking missing the first game of the Playoffs was an issue…

According to Doc Rivers, the Celtics’ attempt to repeat as champs may have just suffered a very serious blow. From the AP and the Boston Globe:

Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers says there is a strong possibility that Kevin Garnett will miss the whole postseason. The All-Star forward has missed most of the last two months with a strained right knee. He had been recovering with an eye towards the playoffs, but Rivers said he had to shut Garnett down at practice Thursday morning and “there’s no way” he could play right now.

Rivers said on a radio show that Garnett was frustrated but understood that it was the right thing to do.

“This is the first time I’ve said it, because it’s the first time I’ve really watched him,” Rivers said. “He’s not gonna be ready. After watching him run, there’s no way. So, we’re gonna move without him. And the way I saw him move today guys, I don’t know if he’ll be ready… he’s just limping. He just can’t run…This was an honest run today, you couldn’t fake your way through it … and the guy is a warrior, you can see him trying to mask it, but after 20 minutes of running, there’s just no way. I don’t see it. I just don’t. And I’ve flipped completely because I was watching him move, and he looked great, and then … after today, there’s no way he can play.

“If he can’t get through biking and working out without swelling and stiffness and his leg locking, I just don’t know how you play in the playoffs.”

‘Tis a dark day in Boston.

C’mon now……do we really believe this?

Say Hello to the Cavs erryone

  • T-man

So where will amazing happen this year?? LOL!

  • http://www.nba.com JE

I’d rather have Garnett in the game hopping on one leg than not have him in at all. He can sit against the Bulls, but after that, he’s got a championship to win.

  • http://where-basketball-b-longs.blogspot.com/ B. Long

Get well soon, KG. Playoffs won’t be the same without ya.

  • Clockwork

  • http://mindyourbusiness@getalife.com Allenp

This seems crazy random. He didn’t seem to be that injured. Crazy.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

Dude’s played a LOT of basketball in the past 14 years…

  • http://kb24.com Bigi

Last year Lakers were missing a key piece for the trophy-hunt,and now Boston has the same problem.I’m not sayin’ these teams will meet in the Finals or anything. But if they would I’d like that both teams are 100%(I know it’s impossible this time of year…) healthy. This sucks! Not just for Beamtown but for all the basketball fans around the world. For this one time I wish Eboy is right in his suspicious minds…Cause if MY team does win it all this year I don’t want this to be the excuse people will be throwin’ around…Let’s go Bobcats…Oh wait…

  • http://kb24.com Bigi

Russ, does this mean your team has a chance now?

  • http://where-basketball-b-longs.blogspot.com/ B. Long

Chicago had a chance before this news came out. You saw the Atlanta series last year, right?

  • Henkenzo

tru dat. many teams breathe a sigh of relieve.
but he will come back in a wheelchair, where did i see that before? and hit 2 threes, nah

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

    Leon Powe come on dowwwwnnnn!

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

sucks bigtime this! Gonna miss KG’s intensity this year.

  • vtrobot

    Can Vin Baker fill in?

  • Clockwork

I still think that Boston will beat Chicago but without Garnett the Cavs will run over them

  • vtrobot

Marcel, it’s actually beautiful here today. We’ll be all right.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

i remember saying at the beginning of the season this year’s ‘ship would be decided by injuries…here we go…watch out Lebron, kobe….who’s the healthiest right now? Denver? Ok maybe not..

  • Coach Master

What the hell is going on in Bos? First KG was going to be out for a few games. Then, a few weeks, and now this. If there is something more substantial going on with KG’s health, they should have dealt with it and got it over with.

  • http://nicekicks.com MeloMan13

@ Bigi: the difference is the Celtics lose their heart and sole, and a proven all star.
the Lakers lose a guy whos averaged 8 and 6 in four years in the league

  • Coach Master

If KG can’t play, they should have him coach.

  • James aka…

If Denver is healthy and wins it all, does allen iverson hang himself in a casino?

  • Coach Master

AI is probably betting against Denver and Detroit.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

I really don’t get how people are comparing this to the Laker’s losing Bynum last year. Remind me again, how many all-star games, MVPs, DPOYs, all-nba first teams and all-defensive first teams have Bynum been on/gotten again?

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

I’d also feel really awful if both New Orleand and Houston advance. McGrady and Iverson will be drowning out their sorrows that night, let me tell you.

  • Wayno

Yeah, that’s the only way the Cavs beat them in a series is if they don’t have KG.

  • KR|SP

    thas F***ED!!!

ima feel lost without having KG in the playoffs…. its like whoever wins the Championship got away with almost a Freebie… =P

  • tenorca

Bullies could win this series. They’ve been playing really well.
Also: I feel like this just became a cake-walk Lakers-Cavs finals. Orlando’s playing like ish, the West is pretty weak (sans LA), and it’s not like the Cavs are having trouble with the Pistons. Maybe with the Heat? Maybe?
And Jukai: This is EXACTLY the same as Bynum being out. I thought you understood that he’s the best center in the NBA.

  • http://nicekicks.com MeloMan13

@ jukai: i think u mean Denver, not new orleans

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

Hm, I thought he was going to be just like the old KG heading into the playoffs. That’s what I read, at least. And hey, “my” team had a chance regardless. I hope they wear their green unis in Game One. BRING IT.

  • http://kb24.com Bigi

@MeloMan13 & Jukai:I know exactly what Kg has accomplished in this league, what I meant was Lakers really need that big body of Drew in the paint…No?KEY PIECE!I wasn’t comparing them by stats or All-Star appearances.

  • http://kb24.com Bigi

Russ can toss a coin on whose gonna wear those green uni’s…Loser is “skins”.

  • http://kb24.com Bigi

    can we…

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

I forget if it was Ryan or Russ, but I definitely owe one of you an apology for saying the Celts will be confident going into the playoffs knowing they’ll have KG coming back.

  • Young Chris MP3

Does KG miss playoffs knowing that this could be one of maybe 2 or 3 last chances at winning it all?

  • Static

I think KG should make a quick trip to Phoenix…at least it would give them the chance at payback to screw some other teams playoff series

  • http://wherespmac.com Justin Adler

God Marbury is such a cancer to this team. I’m sure KG would be a 100% if it were not for Steph.

  • vmcb

This is probably just a Paul Pierce/Willis Reed thing. If not, tough luck for Boston AND us, since this makes the playoffs a whole lot less interesting.

  • http://kb24.com Bigi

@Justin Adler:Actually I think Kg is one of the few friends Mr.Marbury has…

  • Michael

This is Huge for Orlando. They couldn’t beat Boston with KG, but now they can take them, and they’ve dominated the Cavaliers this year, so this gives them a legit shot of getting to the Finals.

  • matt the jazz fan

LA wins this year I’m afraid to say. But Portland gives’em a good run out West and the Cavs at home too.
So LeBronze will become LeSilver (two Finals losses for those counting at home).

  • http://myspace.com/bodiebarnett jbn74sb

    1. Perhaps this is karma for all of the fake bully Garnett pulled. I was hoping for Josh Powell just to knock him the f out, but this will do.
    2. Or, perhaps they will just wheel him in on a wheelchair, and he’ll start game 1.

  • http://www.droseroy.com/ airs

rose is so gonna own rondo.

  • http://mindyourbusiness@getalife.com Allenp

Playoffs won’t be the same without KG…
It tarnishes the ring that either Lebron or Kobe will win this year.
Yeah, it’s a two team race right now.

  • http://myspace.com/bodiebarnett jbn74sb

So the Celtics’ are tarnished from last year then too, for Bynum did not play a minute and Ariza was injured. And while neither is or probably ever will be at Garnett’s level, they certainly would have made a difference. Aside from the refs, of course.

  • albertBarr

Kobe or LeBrons ring (if they get one) will NOT be tarnished because KG didn’t compete…that is fu(king stupid.

  • albertBarr

Kobe cant decide who comes out of the east regardless of KGs health…and LeBron surely isnt afraid to compete agaist a healthy Celtics…they just happen not to be.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

    That would be me, Jukai.

  • Static

For the revenge factor it does tarnish the ring a lil bit, Kobe and Bron both got ousted by KG’s Celtic team so for the comp level it will not be the same because there’s no way anyone on that team can man up the play on both sides of the ball that they relied on KG to bring.
tarnished, yea…whether they give a fu(k or not only they know

  • Danny W

Is Marty Conlon still playing for them?

  • seppo

I really think it was a fluke that the Celtics won the Championship last year. They were never that good. If they had lost to the Hawks everyone would have realized that. KG needs to retire. He has no offensive moves and his defense has always been overrated.

  • Harlem_World

I’m HOPING this is some Paul Pierce type drama. He comes back in and is the uber-hero?

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Well then I totally called this one wrong, Russ. I apologize, good call on your part.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Allenp: What the hell? So, according to what you’ve told me in the past, the Spurs winning in 2007 by beating Phoenix through a headbutt to Nash’s face, a referee working for the mob, and unbalanced decisions by the commissioner of basketball which weren’t followed through with in other situations that year and the year afterwards DOESN’T TARNISH THE SPURS CHAMPIONSHIP, but KG being out will tarnish the Lakers or Cavaliers championship?
I hate you. I think you just posted that to PO me.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

Apology unnecessary, but accepted. (Statistical aside: KG has played 42,624 NBA minutes including the playoffs. Kobe’s played 40,478. Tim Duncan 39,340. MJ played an astounding 48,485, but of course he took some serious time off.)

  • CHE

I think Celtics have a chance to still take it all they have a great team (and I am definately not a celtics fan). KG looks like a dinosaur and Paul Pierce is a cry baby faggot. But I wouldn’t count them out.
I still think the Cavs will beat them in 7 games. Cavs are just playing beyond great basketball especially at home.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

Then again, Bill Russell played 48,223 NBA minutes back when the most advanced medical equipment available was a sharpened stick with a rock tied to it.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

And just because, LeBron has already played 21,190 NBA minutes. At 24. Which is crazy.

  • CHE

Injuries are apart of any sport, you take that into consideration. Jordan played sick, zeke played with a twisted ankle, shaq played with an ugly face it’s life. Not championship is going to be tarnished because someone gets hurt. Tell the fool to hit the weight room and get his weight up..lol

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Russ: Lebron and KG and Kobe are different from Jordan. You gotta factor in Jordan’s three years of college too, which the former three didn’t have.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

Magic and Byron Scott got hurt in ’91, did that tarnish the Bulls first ‘chip? I agree, inuries happen, and the champ is the champ. Period. No asterisks.

  • http://www.twitter.com/TheDiesel Anton

They don’t need him, they got Big Baby.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

@Jukai: Sure, but 40,000 NBA minutes seems to be a soft cap of sorts, whether a guy went to college or not. There’s only been one Kareem.

  • Chris

They’re just going to wheel him out on the court in the second game and he’s going to make a “miraculous” recovery and lead them to the Conference finals.

  • frank

There’s no way the bulls will beat the Celtics.
Didn’t anyone see the Raptors-Bulls game last night?

  • http://www.twitter.com/TheDiesel Anton

Would you guys relax? Paul Pierce will take over just like he did here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rCqreYe4AJI&annotation_id=annotation_536577&feature=iv

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

Somebody just gave Cleveland the championship…

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

Realistically, I think the Bulls put up a decent fight…and probably lose in five.

  • http://mindyourbusiness@getalife.com Allenp

    Jukai and Bodie
You can argue both those points, I don’t care.
In my opinion, I want to see Lebron go through the best, or I want to see Kobe beat the team that whipped his butt last year.
Now, it will still be impressive if Kobe and Lebron meet in the Finals and we finally see who is the most clutch, but it would be better if Boston was a true threat.

  • http://mindyourbusiness@getalife.com Allenp

It’s amazing that KG has played that many minutes despite rarely going deep in the playoffs. He really carried those teams in Minnesota.

  • http://mindyourbusiness@getalife.com Allenp

I’m not saying that the championship wouldn’t count, I’m just saying that if feels better when you beat people at their full strength. At least that’s been my experience.

  • CHE

Maybe Paul Pierces “playing possum” act rubbed off on KG and he will be carried onto the court at tip off and start skipping around saying ANYTHING IS POSSIBLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLEEEEE!!!!

  • tenorca

Bulls in 6, by the way.
Of course, I will not be putting any money on that.

too bad boston fans its not like boston was going to make any noise in the playoffs anyways. the cavs out of the east and lake show out of the west. then laker domination

  • albertBarr

AllenP said: “i’m not saying that the championship wouldn’t count, I’m just saying that if feels better when you beat people at their full strength.”

By your logic the Celtics chip is tarnished as well. Just cause they arent KG doesnt mean Ariza and Bynums impact could have changed that series. Now if Last year PP had not come back from his “injury” and the Lakers had taken the series, that would have constituted some tarnished hardware. But really the Celts are just a trio of long-of-tooth stars who ran out of gas at the end of a long season. They may have success this post-season or not…but they aint gonna repeat.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

If the Celtics had monitored KG’s minutes more, this wouldn’t have happened. No tarnishing here.

  • tealish

For what it’s worth in regards to Russ’ 40k minutes soft cap idea, one Allen Iverson is some 80 or so mins from that mark. Just saying.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

Do you really think thats true Jukai? KG’s injury was a freak accident, I’d attribute his slow healing to age and the general abuse of an NBA career. I’m surprised that no one is giving Chicago much of a chance. Rondo will need to be amazing for the Cs to win. The more I think about it, this series is gonna come down to Rondo vs Rose.

  • tealish

^ Oh and tarnishing is too strong a word, but going through the defending champs with their MVP is definitely better. I am sure Kobe rather beats a Celtic team with KG than without.

  • vtrobot

I’m a C’s fan and this doesn’t tarnish anyone’s championship. Was the Pistons’ championship tarnished because they beat a dysfunctional team of total a-holes? @ seppo, what you said was really, really funny. rooting for one particular team or player is fine, but flat out denying any respect where it’s clearly deserved is just nonsensical. What if I just say, “Bill Russell wasn’t a good player.” How do I sound? That’s how you sound when you say that garbage about KG. Celts still gonna do damage anyway. Cavs and the Lakeshow aren’t a guarantee. This is the playoffs now.

  • Superman Osman

On the other hand, it’s a hell of sunny day in Chi-town…

  • Ses

Bulls in 7!!!! Lol…. The last time the bulls faced a defending champion team in round 1, it ended in a sweep and smiling straight to round 2!!!

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ Moose

As a Celtics fan, I think that we can handle Chicago. After that, It’s scary. Anyways, who’s seen the Celtics in the last bunch of games without KG? We had a huge record. Yeah, we can do it. Can we get that far? It’s too early to tell, although odds are against us. Rondo will beat Rose because of his defense and experience/smarts. I say Celts in . . . 5 or 6.

  • http://aol.com Jonesy McFly

man does this injury rwmind anyone of the chris webber injury that killed his carrer? Same play and everything. both were going up to catch a oop and they messed up there knee… Man its like almost identicle

  • BostonBaller

No asterisks no excuses. We play the games and see what happens. I still believe my C’s will battle until the end and that end could be with a ring. Call me crazy but this is sports and anything can happen. Who knows, he could end up playing but we all know that he would not be anywhere near 100%. I personally wish he wouldn’t play at all and come back next year 100% and pissed off. I rememeber McHale playing when he shouldn’t have and it ended his career. As far as the clowns who say KG or any other player in the L is garbage b/c they aren’t on YOUR team I say you are an Anal Circle. lol. THROW THE DARN BALL UP AND LET’S PLAY SOME BALL PEOPLE!!!

  • DJR

@Nate….again with the crack smoking. Blazers could make it to the WCF but they won’t beat LAL. Second round series are looking awesome – could see LBJ v DWade; DEN v POR; ORL v BOS – what happens if KG isn’t back for that one?? Big Baby + Powe who are a combined 6 ft 10 can handle Dwight in the post and Perkins will foul out in the first 5 minutes. This year is going to be good, Commish Stern is licking his chops atm.

  • DJR

SORRY – NBA.com have POR ranked 3rd in the season end standings but are playing as the 4th ranked team – hence the confusion. POR out in West Semi’s against LAL.

This is fun. Is tarnish like varnish? Varnishgate 2009. Last I checked avoiding injuries in the season, playoffs or finals has always been a challenge and a crap shoot. You’d be hard pressed to find a PO or finals where some injury didn’t have an impact. They suck, they happen and that’s an unfortunate part of life.

Why arent you ridiculing the fact that Ainge had a heart attack on the very same day this was made public???

  • Kas

oops, looks like someone did, i’ll read older comments before posting next time

  • Aristotle

Just means Paul Pierce gets to show once again to everybody just how much he bleeds green, until KG gets the swelling under control.

  • BostonBaller

Danny IS ride or die Green as is McHale (that’s why he gift wrapped KG to us. lol) LJ is a beast but I don’t understand why guys let him fly by them then try to grab. They should try moving their feet and staying in front of him and sure enough they would get a charge against him 1 of 15 times and the other times he would have to hit free throws consistently. For no other reason than slowing him down and making him adjust.

Portland pisses LA off b/c of the match ups and GO is playing alright.

  • Flash

i got a feeling steph’s gonna get blamed for this too… teams are always trying to make him the scapegoat

Half of u cats don’t know S*#T about basketball, & the other half of u are F*%#ING retarded!!!
It wouldn’t matter if the Celtics whole starting five is injured… it doesn’t tarnish any championship any team should win this year! INJURIES ARE PART OF THE GAME!!! Every athlete & every team in all of sports has to deal with injuries. The game doesn’t stop; it’s NOT being unfair.
That may make it a bit easier on Orlando’s side of the bracket not having the Celtics at full strength, but that’s as far as it goes.

ALSO, comparing the Lakers missing Bynum last year to the Celtics missing Garnett this year is like comparing a car with no hood VERSUS a car without an engine under the hood… I’ll let you “geniuses” figure out which is which… LOL.

  • Jordan

Celtics unfortunatly can not make the finals this year because of KG injury. IN every sport in the world injuries are part of the game. I will say that the celtics can make the eastern finals but they dont have a chance to make any further then that becuase of KG he is such a fource on the defencive end and with out him how can they survive the finals when they would be playing the Lakers or if they pull an upset the Spurs. I will say that they can will a few games when they are playin clevlend in the eastern finals but THEY CAN NOT ADVANCE ANY FURTHER THEN THAT.

  • BostonBaller

Jukai, most players are mentally weaker on defense these days and that makes it easier to score. I miss the night in night out defense. They’re not afraid of twisting the ankle as much as getting their chest blown out taking that charge from James. lol. It’s all about positioning and knowing how to take the charge w/out getting the full force of the hit…but you’re right, they’re afraid. Except for Powe or Artest

  • ADM

That’s what you get for wearing Bill Walton’s jersey number.

  • KoBynum716

apparently the celtics mind games include lots of wheelchairs. maybe in game 2 ray allen will break his leg, and come back 3 min later to drop 45 on the bulls. anything is possible, especially in boston.
