KG: Out for the Playoffs?

A dark day in Beantown.

by Marcel Mutoni

And here we were thinking missing the first game of the Playoffs was an issue…

According to Doc Rivers, the Celtics’ attempt to repeat as champs may have just suffered a very serious blow. From the AP and the Boston Globe:

Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers says there is a strong possibility that Kevin Garnett will miss the whole postseason. The All-Star forward has missed most of the last two months with a strained right knee. He had been recovering with an eye towards the playoffs, but Rivers said he had to shut Garnett down at practice Thursday morning and “there’s no way” he could play right now.

Rivers said on a radio show that Garnett was frustrated but understood that it was the right thing to do.

“This is the first time I’ve said it, because it’s the first time I’ve really watched him,” Rivers said. “He’s not gonna be ready. After watching him run, there’s no way. So, we’re gonna move without him. And the way I saw him move today guys, I don’t know if he’ll be ready… he’s just limping. He just can’t run…This was an honest run today, you couldn’t fake your way through it … and the guy is a warrior, you can see him trying to mask it, but after 20 minutes of running, there’s just no way. I don’t see it. I just don’t. And I’ve flipped completely because I was watching him move, and he looked great, and then … after today, there’s no way he can play.

“If he can’t get through biking and working out without swelling and stiffness and his leg locking, I just don’t know how you play in the playoffs.”

‘Tis a dark day in Boston.

And you thought he isn’t ride or die with the celtics…

  • Bruno, RJ

now lets see all those dudes that defended PP for that finals mvp…
this celtics have NO chance even against the Hawks.

  • http://www.broy7.com/roy/index nate the great

i think this is a set up.. hes going to show up and dominate just when you count him out. it doesnt matter tho, blazers are taking this year’s chip.

  • DJR

@Nate….again with the crack smoking. Blazers could make it to the WCF but they won’t beat LAL. Second round series are looking awesome – could see LBJ v DWade; DEN v POR; ORL v BOS – what happens if KG isn’t back for that one?? Big Baby + Powe who are a combined 6 ft 10 can handle Dwight in the post and Perkins will foul out in the first 5 minutes. This year is going to be good, Commish Stern is licking his chops atm.

  • DJR

SORRY – NBA.com have POR ranked 3rd in the season end standings but are playing as the 4th ranked team – hence the confusion. POR out in West Semi’s against LAL.

  • chintao

    I blame Steph.

This is fun. Is tarnish like varnish? Varnishgate 2009. Last I checked avoiding injuries in the season, playoffs or finals has always been a challenge and a crap shoot. You’d be hard pressed to find a PO or finals where some injury didn’t have an impact. They suck, they happen and that’s an unfortunate part of life.

chintao – if you blame Steph, I blame rap music :P

The C’s are still tough to beat without him, but Cleveland might have their way with them though

  • lakers4life

LEBRON JAMES SCARES THE HELL OUT OF ME.SOMEBODY STOP HIM PLS

  • Kas

Why arent you ridiculing the fact that Ainge had a heart attack on the very same day this was made public???

  • Kas

oops, looks like someone did, i’ll read older comments before posting next time

  • Aristotle

Just means Paul Pierce gets to show once again to everybody just how much he bleeds green, until KG gets the swelling under control.

  • BostonBaller

Danny IS ride or die Green as is McHale (that’s why he gift wrapped KG to us. lol) LJ is a beast but I don’t understand why guys let him fly by them then try to grab. They should try moving their feet and staying in front of him and sure enough they would get a charge against him 1 of 15 times and the other times he would have to hit free throws consistently. For no other reason than slowing him down and making him adjust.

Portland pisses LA off b/c of the match ups and GO is playing alright.

  • Flash

i got a feeling steph’s gonna get blamed for this too… teams are always trying to make him the scapegoat

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

BostonBaller: In all honesty, I think a lot of players are afraid to get injured. You wanna twist your ankle AND send Lebron to the line? I dunno, man…

  • mojado3

    boston’s done.
    where’s amazing happening this year?
    NOT BOSTON

Half of u cats don’t know S*#T about basketball, & the other half of u are F*%#ING retarded!!!
It wouldn’t matter if the Celtics whole starting five is injured… it doesn’t tarnish any championship any team should win this year! INJURIES ARE PART OF THE GAME!!! Every athlete & every team in all of sports has to deal with injuries. The game doesn’t stop; it’s NOT being unfair.
That may make it a bit easier on Orlando’s side of the bracket not having the Celtics at full strength, but that’s as far as it goes.

ALSO, comparing the Lakers missing Bynum last year to the Celtics missing Garnett this year is like comparing a car with no hood VERSUS a car without an engine under the hood… I’ll let you “geniuses” figure out which is which… LOL.

  • Jordan

Celtics unfortunatly can not make the finals this year because of KG injury. IN every sport in the world injuries are part of the game. I will say that the celtics can make the eastern finals but they dont have a chance to make any further then that becuase of KG he is such a fource on the defencive end and with out him how can they survive the finals when they would be playing the Lakers or if they pull an upset the Spurs. I will say that they can will a few games when they are playin clevlend in the eastern finals but THEY CAN NOT ADVANCE ANY FURTHER THEN THAT.

  • BostonBaller

Jukai, most players are mentally weaker on defense these days and that makes it easier to score. I miss the night in night out defense. They’re not afraid of twisting the ankle as much as getting their chest blown out taking that charge from James. lol. It’s all about positioning and knowing how to take the charge w/out getting the full force of the hit…but you’re right, they’re afraid. Except for Powe or Artest

  • ADM

That’s what you get for wearing Bill Walton’s jersey number.

  • KoBynum716

apparently the celtics mind games include lots of wheelchairs. maybe in game 2 ray allen will break his leg, and come back 3 min later to drop 45 on the bulls. anything is possible, especially in boston.
