Mario Elie and His Crazy Visions for the Mavs

by Marcel Mutoni

Mario Elie, owner of multiple NBA title rings, knows what championship teams are made of. And according to the former Rocket, this year’s Dallas Mavericks are a lot like the 1995 Houston team that won it all.

Let’s follow Mario down the bunny trail, via the Dallas Morning News:

“We’re floating under the radar, just like our ’95 team,” Elie said. “Nobody is talking about us, and that’s good. It feels like that ’95 team.”

“These are tough-minded guys, and they see an opportunity. Everybody’s talking about the Lakers, Cavaliers and whoever. And those are great teams. Nothing’s going to come easy. We’re going to have to start on the road and earn it. That’s when you find out if you can be a champion – if you can go into a rough, hostile place and get a win. That’s what a champion does.”

Elie said he had not yet talked to players about the karma of the ’95 team but that he definitely would bring it up. “I’ll share stuff with them, mainly just about believing,” he said. “That’s huge. You have to believe in each other and the team.”

As a full-fledged member of the coaching staff, he’s practically paid to say these sort of things, I suppose.

And who knows, maybe Mario can convince Hakeem Olajuwon to un-retire and see if he can’t lend a helping hand during this Dallas title run.

“maybe Mario can convince Hakeem Olajuwon to un-retire and see if he can’t lend a helping hand during this Dallas title run.” Amen to that

I’m sorry…..any team rolling out JJ Barrea as their backup point guard ain’t winning sh*t.

“Yo son, I had crazy visions
Check it out check it out check it out, boom”

Oh and what is that add blurb thing up the top right?
It’s advertising kicks (the magazine) and as soon as you run your mouse over it, a quarter of the ‘screen’ gets pulled back like a page. I can barely see the VC video link. No, you don’t have to click on it for that to happen eithet btw.
Any chance that ‘page’ can be downsized or moved? Thanks.

speaking of Eboy, remember when Jason Williams dunked on Mario Elie?

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

    I miss my namesake.

Um, JJ has been pretty solid this year, E.

  • Jumpman3224

I bet whit eboy be back next season. Didn’t he try to get reinstated earlier this year…

  • Jumpman3224

    *will be back next season

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Yeah…..B…..I know…..is he terrifying your boys if they have to meet with the Mavs? Can Fish and Farmar not stop his monstrous ability?

    Thought so.

  • Jumpman3224

Speaking of the lakers backcourt any thoughts on who will be their backup PG…Farmar or Brown?

  • http://www.mynameinorange.blogspot.com Hisham

    Sun Yue

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

    Dirk Nowitzki =/= Hakeem Olajuwon

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

Just in case anyone was wondering.

  • http://where-basketball-b-longs.blogspot.com B. Long

Brown will be against more physical pg’s and Farmar will chase the Paul’s and Parker’s if it comes to that. Neither one can guard Deron Williams so it doesn’t really matter this round.

  • http://www.mynameinorange.blogspot.com Hisham

minus the heart of a champion, Russ

Mario Elie’s got more than only one ring doesn’t he? He was part of the Rockets for the two titles and then of the spurs for one or two title, wasn’t he? So He and Cassell have more rings than the Dream. Funny.

  • Blinguo

It was all Akeem, (I used to read Word-Up magazine).

He didn’t once mention Kenny and the (new) Jet.
Musta been in the watching tape rooms too long with that other Mavs player who said (last month?) the Mavs are going through the Lakers this year because Kobe can do too much at times and be distrusting.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

ninjaaaaaaa! Gimme some Ninja!!! I refuse to engage in speculation regarding these Mavs. We’ll get an idea of what they can do soon. Never been so happy that Manu is hurting. That guy is a serious baller come playoff time.

  • http://theghostofroyhobbs.blogspot.com Mo Charlo

Let’s not forget about Robert Horry dunking on anything that moved. Clutch City! Furthermore, Robots > Germans.

  • Sparker

james posey would not have been volunteering to shut down hakeem

  • seppo

Elie´s vision ain´t that crazy. I also think that the Mavs can win it all this year. Dirk will have a monster series against San Antonio. I don´t know if they can beat the Lakers but I expect Dallas to advance to the conference finals.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

well dallas will bebeating the spurs, so that’s a start i guess, it’s possible for them to reach the conf finals, thats about it though…

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Unfortunately for the Mavs, I think they have a good of a chance as anyone to advance to the conference finals, maybe one of the BEST chances… but the worst chance of upstaging the Lakers. They just get pounded when they play the Lakers.

  • http://www.twitter.com/TheDiesel Anton

    Mavs in 7

  • Clark Kent

Dallas may squeak by the Spurs, but they can’t beat the Nuggets or the Hornets.

  • seppo

The Hornets are garbage this year. Chris Paul´s stats look nice, but when has a diminutive point guard ever lead his team to a championship.

  • http://double-technical.blogspot.com Zee!

Only one Ghostface reference, man I’d thought I would see more.

  • a_whiteman

Seppo, isiah thomas ring a bell?tony parker in 07?

  • seppo

Isiah Thomas had some of the best supporting casts in the history of the NBA. The Spurs wouldn´t have won without Duncan or Ginobili. No player in the league has the ball in his hands as much as Paul does. But he isn´t nearly as effective or unstoppable as James, Kobe or Wade. He averages 11 assists, but only because of generous stat keepers. On some of his assists the scorer does a crossover dribble and beats his man one on one, yet Paul is rewarded with an assist. Paul is overrated, I only like him on 2K9. I hope the Hornets lose in the first round.

  • http://www.broy7.com/roy/index nate the great

Blazers win it all in 4 games against the cavs ;) .

  • truthteller

What mario forgot is that the 95 Houston Rockets were actually a great team! The same can’t be said for the Mavs! Sorry Mario! It’s over again this year!

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

Cocanie + alone in locker room at end of half time + talking to reporter after game = sequence of events leaking up to this.

  • Mo

seppo, you know full damn well Paul isn’t overrated. If you want to hate, then go on and hate but you know full damn well the dude is doing his thing. Give him his damn props and move on. You need to go to NBA.com and read what the head official Bernie Fryer considers an assist before you try to berate Paul. Speaking of 2K9, this must be the only time you watch Paul. LMAO. Oh and yeah, remember Isiah did in fact have some of the best supporting casts in the history of the NBA. Don’t punish Paul because of that though.

  • Mo

Like Katt Williams said, you gotta have haters. If you have 20 haters you need to find a way to get 40 of them muthaf*ckers. seppo, join the CP hater club. LMAO!

  • Mo

A haters job is to hate. LMAO!

  • Mo

Oh and hey seppo, what do you think about Deron Williams’ generous assists. His home/away assists numbers has an even bigger disparity than CP does. Does his generous statisticians follow him around from arena to arena? LMAO! Grow up dude.

  • Mo

Oh and 1 more thing. Paul gets an awful lot of assists from catch and shoot players such as Rasual and Peja and alley oops from Wright and Tyson (when he’s healthy). West is probably the only one that creates his shots outside of CP3 but he does a lot of catch and shoots too (17-ft assassin). I don’t even know why I’m wasting my breath with you really. Good day.

  • http://mindyourbusiness@getalife.com Allenp

Isiah’s supporting casts were nice, but he was still great.
In fact, Isiah didn’t have a better supporting cast than Bird or Magic.

  • Nik

Even though Im a mavs fan, I know that they wont go as far as elie thinks they will !! I mean …not with Dampier and devean george

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Bill Laimbeer is a bad@ss, Allenp.

  • Dave

I take your point, Allenp, but just to be pedantic, the first Piston’s chip team might stack up better than the last Lakers’ chip team. They were real deep.
But I am probably splitting hairs.

Whoa Eboy, I’m with B. Long on this one. JJ has been doing pretty well this season. I doubt that they make it past the second round though.

I actually wrote last week that the Mavs will face the LAL in the Western conference finals…I stand by that comment.

  • George B

probably there are similarities between these mavs and the ’95 rockets but those rockets didn’t have to beat teams as deep as ’09 lakers and cavs to win it all

  • Jeter

Elie should play. They need wing players with heart.

  • http://www.funkdoctor.com FUnkDoctor

The Mavs aren’t even in the playoffs. its the Lakers vs Magic with special guest referee…Shaq.
