Nate McMillan isn’t Enjoying the Refereeing, Either

by Marcel Mutoni

Just about everyone in these here Playoffs has had a complaint or two about the refs. The Blazers’ coach, Nate McMillan, evidently did not want to be left out of the fun. Especially with his team facing the prospect of elimination.

With his team on the ropes, Nate is pulling out the victim card when it comes to the officiating.

From The Oregonian:

Despite the possibility of a fine from NBA executive Stu Jackson, who among other duties oversees officiating, McMillan without prompting criticized the officiating in the series. In particular, McMillan focused on the two games in Houston, both won by the Rockets. “I don’t want Stu to be calling me or anything like that, but if you look at the stat sheet and you look at the way the calls have gone the last couple games, it’s not consistent,” McMillan said.

“Our guys, Greg and Joel, are getting called for touch fouls against Yao, and Artest and Battier are riding Brandon Roy every time he runs or he penetrates to the basket,” McMillan said. “I’m just saying that it needs to be called both ways.” For the series, the Blazers have been called for 101 fouls, Houston 83. Portland has shot 79 free throws to Houston’s 106.

To his credit, McMillan acknowledged that he was pretty much aping what Rick Adelman had done following the Rockets’ Game 2 loss in Portland: complain about the officials through the media.

Call me crazy, but I see the Blazers getting a whole bunch of calls on their homecourt tonight.

    blazers in 9.

Is there any way to solve the problems we’re facing with refereeing? I believe that the refs hardly ever call games even. Jerry Sloan should be complaining big time after last night’s end of the game. 100% one-sided for the lakers. And it happens with every team.

i hope they get some calls marcel.. those 2 games where bull ish. even the announcer’s sad yao wouldnt ever get another call. jumpin and leaning all over the penetrators.
    it was bull ish.
    the series should be 2-2

i agree with RM. How many straight turnovers did the jazz have in the 4th? when they tried catching up i remember countless acts when they got offensive fouls for nothing.

This sucks. Its gotten to where I can’t just sit back and watch the game anymore, I’m always wondering about the officiating and how much it determines winners and losers. I guess some casual fans may not notice as much, but Stern really needs to do something to restore some confidence in the way NBA games are officiated.

Nate: maybe, because 2 of your players are human foul machines (Ghostface and Old Man Oden, Greg alone averages 10.6 fouls per 48 minutes) their is going to be a lopsided difference in fouls?

Game 7 tonight! Let’s go Rangers! It’s a certainty that the refs will play a minimal role! Fine the refs who repeatedly make bad calls and fire them if it never improves! I hate when I can see something clearly, in live action, from my living room, and the replay confirms it, but the guy standing five feet from the actions misses it.

BETcats, Yao commits enough fouls as well, and he wasn’t getting any calls against him. Brandon Roy drove to the bucket at will and got hit by Yao numerous times and no foul was called. I can’t even remember a game where there hasn’t been a NUMBER of calls I was angry at.. and not because it was my team, it’s because the calls are 100% wrong.

The Laker Jazz game last night was just ridiculous. And i’m a laker fan!

Oden reach, Yao teach. EAT THE HEAD.

  • catalan

well i’m not enjoying the McMillan mode…

    Rudy +

    Outlaw, Blake, Batum -

Also, hey, referees are only human. Well, except for Steve Javie, Dick Bavetta and Joey Crawford.

The blazers should be glad it’s been inconsistent. Those “touch fouls” were correct calls. You cant bear hug a post player, or hook him with an arm. These fouls werent called the first two games, had they been, Game 2 would have gone to Houston. Portland should be glad they have a game 5 to play. What i hate more than bad calls is fans complaining about flops. Roy jumps into yao to create 85% of the contact between those 2. Trust me, y’all dont want every foul called on both sides, oden and Przybilla would foul out at halftime, Yao late in the 4th, but by then Yao would have scored 20 in the 3rd and y’all would be going home. I think Nate needs to worry about Outlaw being on vacation this series and Roy averaging under 2 assists the first 3 games when he usually gets 5 per. And there’s always that other thing, you know, not leaving the opposing PF wide open time and time again from 12 feet out when they have a J. Guarding Battier from 3 wouldn’t hurt either..

The Laker game was fine, just like Charles said, Utah wasn’t going to win anyway and the Rockets are the better team, so they should win this series. Refs don’t win or lose games, its the players mindset, keep going hard, eventually you will get the call. Play to win the game, not to get bail out calls by the refs, thats what Utah was doing and you could see the refs saying come on-PLAY. and with the Rockets Oden and P suck. So of course Yao will get the benefit of the doubt.

  • RM

I think your mindset is a bit off. You’re saying since Utah wasn’t going to win anyway, why call the game fairly? You can’t judge how the refs are going to call the game based on which team is “better”. That’s the number one knock on the refs in the first place. Ronnie Price drove to the basketball two times on two different possessions for the Jazz, getting hit both times, and no foul was called. You think it’d be the same if Kobe Bryant did the same thing? Making a big comeback? Down by single digits? This game always takes a turn for the worse during the playoffs. Celtics v. Lakers final?

  • Koz

Wah wah wah. Oden and Joel are getting called for TOUCH fouls?!?!? Are you kidding me? Yao is getting grabbed, pushed, held, ran into, and beat up all game long, its a wrestling match. Nate I know that you are desperate because you are about to lose the series tonight but please dont whine about the refs. Your problem is you are getting outcoached and your players are getting outplayed. Rockets in 5.

the games have been one sided since game one. YAO is the one that initiates the “fouls”. when he gets fronted, he is the one that hooks his arm into his defender. and brandon roy gets hit going to the rim on just about every possession. replace roy with james, kobe or wade, and the free throw attempts will go up. i guaransheed it.

  • what

You are all missing the point. Sure, those are fouls on Yao, but call it the same on the other end. You have Artest holding onto Roy’s jersey coming through screens, riding the hell out of him and doing everything that our bigs do to Yao and he gets called for 1-2 fouls a game. Not to mention Battier doing the same. Not whining, just looking for consistency. also explain why 70 year olds are refereeing.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

DMA, maybe roy shouldnt take so many jumpshots and then his FTs would go up.And I guess the claw marks on Yao’s shoulders and that 3 inch scratch across his sideburn/cheek were self inflicted….Przybilla messed himself up, if he didnt try to sneak in elbows and moving picks, then maybe refs wouldnt be looking at him extra close. In game 2 Roy got most of his 41 off of picks, mainly Przybilla’s. He’d move on them, lower his shoulder and even caught Shane with an elbow to the throat, not to mention the times he held a defender an extra second or two to give Roy or Blake an open jumper. Lamarcus’ picks werent that effective because his were legal and ron/shane went around them and caught up to Roy. That’s not going to go unnoticed for this many games. As for Oden, his defense consists of literally huggin Yao. Sometimes i dont know if he’s guarding him or whispering in his ear.

“It’s amazing,” Carl Landry said. “He’s got a big scar on the right side of his face and scratches all over his arm. He goes out there and battles everyday.”
Hey, Yao, how did you get that scar?
“My wife did it,” he said.
Did you complain to the refs Saturday night during an 86-83 victory?
    “I complained on the court.”
“One guy said, ‘Your English is not good enough.’”

Simple solution: become a superstar and get all the calls!

  • http://www.clutchfans.net nick

I’m with RV–Yao is hardly getting “superstar” calls. When a player stands straight up and takes contact, it’s a no call. This is something that Yao has been working on since Rudy T was his coach ( I once ran into van gundy at the jamba juice near my house, and someone asked him why yao doesn’t just keep his arms up straight when people drive, and he gave the guy an eat sh!t look and said “i wish i knew”) . When Roy goes flying into Yao, yes there’s contact, but Yao doesn’t stick a leg out or try to reach, so that’s a no call.

As for the calls on the other side…Yao consistently gets mugged. Two arms on the offensive player = foul. Arm clamp = foul. Sticking a leg out = foul. When oden and Ghostface “meet Yao early” and attempt to limit his progess on the court using any of these tactics, that’s a foul. I’ve sat through years of Yao not getting these calls, it’s about damn time that they come through.

  • Blue

“Ghostface” should be called “Cannonball” the way launchs himself out of the paint when Yao gets near him…It’s about time Yao started getting some benefits of being an All Star caliber player. I have a feeling the game won’t be ref’d correctly this time because of the complaints about the officiating (a la Game 2…when it took dang near 20 min to play the first 5 minutes of the game), but Roy and the boys should be “gone fishin” by the end of the night.

  • Blue

    Greg Oden just fouled out.

It’s Joey “I’ll Say Who’s Amazing around Here” Crawford.

NBA playoffs are always rigged by the officials. Small teams like Portland can win but they don’t get to play even, thats the name of the game. Whats funny is no matter who wins this series the next Lakers matchup will see them as the underdogs.

  • purppp

umm why are we hearing about this when the cavs were averaging TWENTY MORE FREE THROWS A GAME than the pistons. ive never seen anything that one sided in my life. but slam and everyone else is on lebrons balls.

  • chazz michael michaels

greg oden is splooge in a fat mans sweatpants! thats just it…

  • http://myspace.com/2grownup2beshownup Jack

Hate to break it to you all, but the Lakers are ALWAYS favoured. Always.

  • BostonBaller

Players play and refs ref but unfortunately a bad call can decide a close game or break open a close game. It’s just how it is. We all know the officials are human and make mistakes but some mistakes are just plain horrible and are borderline suspect at best.I hate the unwritten star player gets the calls rule even when said star is a Celtic….I’m tired from watching all these games.
