Philly Happily Provides Orlando With Motivational Material

by Marcel Mutoni

There’s something to be said about a lower seed making statements (often, outlandish ones) to build self-confidence prior to the start of a Playoff series. That is to say, it is usually not the greatest of ideas.

Case in point, the Philadelphia Sixers publicly admitting that they’d much rather face Orlando in the opening round (instead of the Celtics), because it’s a much easier task.

From the Philly Inquirer:

Andre Miller acknowledged that every team in the Eastern Conference wanted to avoid Cleveland, the NBA’s best team, and Boston, the reigning champion…”We just wanted to put ourselves in position where we can try to do something in the playoffs,” Miller said. “Boston is a team that people have in the conference finals. It’s probably easier to go through Orlando than to try and match up with Boston, with Boston coming in with a lot of energy and trying to get through the first round as fast as they can.”

“I agree with ‘Dre,” Thaddeus Young said. “Orlando’s a great team, but we definitely want to play them. Boston is fresh off a championship. That’s the worst thing you can do is go play a team that just won a championship. They’re going to want to get back and be hungry.”

Of course, the über-confident Sixers are 0-3 against Orlando this season. And over on the Orlando side, the late-season injury situation appears to be improving.

The battle begins on Sunday.

Isn’t there some obscure rule that Philly can exploit to pick up AI for the playoffs?

  • Blinguo

    “Who-do? He-do.” (Turkoglu)
Should play in the opening round as well as the $110 mil man, Raw Lew from the latest reports.
Iggy has been on a tear through the wrap up into the post season.
Orlando is unsure of themselves getting back to full strength and getting it clicking chemistry-wise going in to playoff weekend.

  • Blinguo

So they beat eachother up, as do the ATL-MIA matchup, so the Cavs/Celts get a little more rest. Boston could go 6(or 7 ?!) with Chi though and get a scare from a Noah/Thomas interior package.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Was Blinguo being sarcastic about his Noah/Thomas comment?

I’m scared of the Noah/Thomas interior package, but then again I’m a Bulls fan.

This just in: Dalembert b*tchslapped Dre and Young. Why? Dwight is gonna floss with the Sixers “frontcourt”. First Hollins giving Kob’s motivation, now several players on the 76ers? The stupid WWF tactics in the nba this season are so annoying!

  • neaorin

You have to admit they have a point. After losing at home to a Celtics team that was without KG and Ray Ray and had Tony Allen play 40 minutes, then getting taken to overtime by a Cavs team led by Wally Szczerbiak, Darnell Jackson and Sasha Pavlovic (all 40+ minutes), would you want anything to do with either of those teams? They should just thank heaven (and the Raptors) that they now stand a chance to win a game this offseason.

They’re combined one good frontcourt player, and also the C’s just got hit with the realization there’s no BIG ticket down in the trenches. So the Bulls frontcourt do have at least serviceable bodies that might realize they to need to step it up and get 2nd chance points, putbacks, and all the rebounds ahead of the smaller and not lanky duo of Powe and Big Baby filling in for The Ticket. Perkins is going to out duel everyone with his perma-scowl? So yeah, its the morning in west coast time so maybe I was thinking they’d do more than be inconsistent, until they get coached(ok, big maybe there) to take over the painted area ASAP.

  • Blinguo

And why can Jukai make a qwerty word jumble of a link and still get the bigger blue link’d Name title, when I put up legit links sometimes (or at last more legit than Juk’s there, ya know, google.com and such, just to test sometimes) and they either await endless moderation queue or just get ganked by the internet voodoo priests.

Ok, so one day you may get your own TV show like that Murder Inc. headmaster and then yell @ your kids about being a man? Awesome. I used to get the orange letters working in the old SLAMonline. Now they shut me out the building. Crapshoot internetz.

Thad Young might already be the Sixers best player. In a couple years, that’ll be fine but right now thats not a good thing. I just don’t believe in Iguoudala AT ALL in late game situations. Dwight will show if he can dominate a playoff series by himself, because I feel like the rest of these teams can match up pretty evenly. The 76ers need to be giving Lou Williams more burn though, he really helps their offense, which can be very ugly, and plays the passing lanes extremely well, which could be really important against a team that likes to kick it out for the 3 so often.

As much as this is a dumb tactic, there is quite some truth in it too as neaorin alluded to. As the run-and-gun Sixers, wouldn’t you rather face Orlando and their gunners (and the resultant potential fastbreak opportunities) than Boston’s hulking frontcourt and their lockdown D?

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

Noah and Tyrus are total wild cards, but they have the things that the C’s don’t. Length and atheleticism, Tyrsu needs to stay out of foul trouble while staying agressive on D limiting those jumpshots, and focus on getting to the rim and drawing fouls, the Cs arevery thin upfront w/o KG. Noah will bring hustle and energy, rebounding and defense, and not much else, but he’ll scream wildly if he does anything good, so no one’s gonna miss it anyway.

  • Blinguo

Theo Ratliff in the playoffs, Shaq, Iverson, McGrady, Vince Carter, Not. How bout that. You guys know Theo is still alive right?

  • Blinguo

Shocked when I seen it myself in box scores this year. And doing more than Deke and Magloire combined.

  • Blinguo

Thanks for agreeing and furthering that line of discussion to show I wasn’t completely out of it ciolkstar. I meant no diss on Jukai, just wanted to bring up that only thing I remembered or saw from that terrible Irv Gotti reality show, in a back and forth playful banter manner on the “kinda a big deal” quote, which he used in another reality show I saw one episode of, that Farnsworth Bentley one about suburban gangstas when Irv told the kids to step their games up with their marketing plan.

  • Krishan

    Wasn’t that an Anchorman reference?

  • Blinguo

Will Ferrell isn’t real enough for the league in my view, SLAM’s too when they bombed his stupid ABA goofball movie, so I’ve never seen Anchorman. (SLAM ran the Ferrell and Nate fist pound as the current contest though, and posted his Flint Tropics shoes in the Kicks section a while back)

Champ Kind: It jumped up a notch.
Ron Burgundy: It did, didn’t it?
Brick Tamland: Yeah, I stabbed a man in the heart.
Ron Burgundy: I saw that. Brick killed a guy. Did you throw a trident?
Brick Tamland: Yeah, there were horses, and a man on fire, and I killed a guy with a trident.
Ron Burgundy: Brick, I’ve been meaning to talk to you about that. You should find yourself a safehouse or a relative close by. Lay low for a while, because you’re probably wanted for murder.

Rondo vs Rose, that might be fun to watch. Both are quick to the basket but Rondo has better D IMO. Rose is younger and wants to prove he is indeed the franchise player while Rondo still feels as though he has to prove he is able to run this team and belongs with the best PG’s in the L. The Bulls bigs are athletic but our bigs are playoff ready and eager to please KG. I like this match up Sir Russ I like it alot.

how does a team let a.i just get under the basket
on a critical play , and then leave him open on the 3 pt line…it looks bad for van gundy you have to protect the paint and the 3 pt line
