Post Up: Raps Play Spolier

While Finley beats (or cheats) the shot clock.

by Holly MacKenzie / @stackmack

Good Morning. Welcome to the last week of the 2008-2009 NBA regular season. Kind of crazy, isn’t it? I really can’t believe it.

This was my first year in a locker room covering a team for a season. It was my first time working towards becoming comfortable in that setting and it was my first opportunity to try different things out with respect to my writing.

It’s also over.

Because the Raptors had one hell of an awful, brokedown season, last night was their final home game and although they closed out with victory, I’m pretty sad right now. It was Easter, everyone and their dog had left the city to be with their family and I was feeling like all of the good things were coming to an end. And, I didn’t even have any chocolate to make the day a little better.

Seeing Ray Allen elbow Varejao in the balls was surprising. Jesus Shuttlesworth, it was Easter Sunday!

So…. I picked up the newest issue of SLAM Saturday night on my way to work. I didn’t get the Rubio/Jennings cover which was my first pick so I’m hoping that will be the one that gets mailed to me (hint, hint). I also picked up the remaining copies of SLAM that were on the top shelf and behind some other fitness mag and moved them front and center. I’ve done that as long as I can remember. Wherever I see SLAM, I move them to eye level before I leave the store. Anyone else do anything like this?

Dwyane Wade did his part to make me smile, dropping a career-high 55 on the Knicks last night as the Heat took down New York 122-105 thanks to a fourth quarter where they held the Knicks to just 14 points while scoring 25 themselves. The Heat jumped out to an early lead after pouring in 37 points in the opening 12 minutes and led 37-26 after one. Besides Wade’s 55 and 9 boards, Michael Beasley was huge for the Heat, scoring 28 points to go with 16 reobunds. The Knicks had 21 points apiece from Al Harrington and Wilson Chandler and David Lee had another double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

The Raptors had a chance to play the spoiler against the Sixers who would clinch the fifth seed in the East if they won. For one of the few times this season, Toronto rose to the occasion and got the W, 111-104, thanks to a late steal from Shawn Marion to clinch the game. Andrea Bargnani had 17 points  and 6 blocked shots for the Raptors while Chris Bosh finished with 22, Anthony Parker added 18 and Jose Calderon had 11 points and 11 assists. The Sixers struggled as Andre Igoudala scored 21 points but had 10 turnovers. Andre Miller could not get it going as he finished 2-14 from the floor to finish with just 10 points and 4 assists. Samuel Dalembert had 21 points and 12 rebounds as his ex-Canadian national team coach watched from the sidelines and Louis Williams had 23 off of the bench.

The matchup of the day was supposed to be the Boston/Cleveland game. The Cavs quickly ended that idea as they held the Celtics to just 3-20 shooting in the first quarter and led 31-9 after one. By the third quarter it was a 30 point game and they rolled on to the 107-76 blowout while LeBron spent much of the fourth on the bench cheering his teammates on. 29 points and 7 assists for James, as the Cavs shot 55% to the C’s 35%. Delonte West and Mo Williams each scored 13 points and Zydrunas Ilgauskas added 11 points and 10 rebounds. The Celtics were led by Paul Pierce’s 14 points, but it took him 17 shots to get them. Glen Davis added 13 in the loss.

Chris Paul continutes to amaze, this time pouring in 31 points to go with 17 assists and 9 rebounds as he helped the Hornets get the big 102-92 win over the Mavericks. With David West also scoring 31 and Rasual Butler chipping in 13, the Mavericks could not keep up late, despite Dirk Nowitzki’s 29 points and 14 rebounds on the evening. Josh Howard had 15 points while Jason Terry and Brandon Bass added 13 points apiece off of the bench.

The Lakers pummeled the Grizzlies, 92-75 and Andrew Bynum scored 18 points as he continues to find his footing and shake off the rust. Kobe Bryant scored 16 points on 7-9 shooting and Pau Gasol had 12 points and 13 rebounds. Reserve Shannon Brown played 16 minutes in the game as there was talk of him potentially playing an important role in the playoffs against certain point guards the Lakers may face. OJ Mayo scored 20 points to lead the Grizzlies in defeat as Marc Gasol scored 14 and Hakim Warrick added 12 off of the bench. Memphis struggled from the floor, finishing just 36% on the evening. With their 64th victory, the Lakers still trail the Cavs for the best record in the L and would need both the Cavs to lose out while they win their game against Utah in order to grab that top spot. I’m willing to bet it doesn’t happen, with the Cavs playing Indy and Philly next.

The Spurs won 95-92 against the Sacramento Kings and without Tim Duncan, but it was a controversial win as Michael Finley knocked down a three with 1.3 second remaining after the shot clock had expired. While the shot clock clearly showed that it had expired, there was no buzzer and the red light did not go off. A review cannot be made for the shot clock and the refs counted the basket as good, sinking the Kings hopes at taking down SA. The Kings were without Kevin Martin who sat out with a sore ankle, but Spencer Hawes scored a career-high 24 points as Francisco Garcia scored 12, Andres Nocioni added 11 points and 8 rebounds and Jason Thompson 8 points and 11 boards. Tony Parker scored 25 points to go with 9 assists for the Spurs, Roger Mason scored 22 and Kurt Thomas had 9 points to go with 13 boards in the victory.

oh ok Myung. Had clue you disliked flip. At ease.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Sorry B……no one felt like talking about the Lakers this morning.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

He’s still no Yinka Dare. Look up his career numbers sometime.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

    Sammy D, that is.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Russ, that was great for a laugh, but Dare took 200 shots for his career. Dalembert has taken over four hundred shots this season. So I assume Dalembert gets the ball a bit more.
Still, having four CAREER assists is truly an accomplishment.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Izzo

Dalembert is in the Kevin Ollie school of being able to hold down a long term job in the Lig on the back of a college career that reached the dizzying heights of 6 points and 6 boards a game.

    MVP! MVP! MVP!

  • Michaelbchnn

The Heat will take the Hawks in 6. They don’t have anyone that can gaurd D-Wade, and thats all that really matters.

  • Myung

I agree with the above assessment that the Hawks can’t guard Dwyane Wade, but strangely enough, NBA teams somehow found a way to overcome Wade enough times to win 38 times against the Heat this season (including the Hawks holding a 2-1 mark against them, going into tomorrow’s meaningless game)…and that’s all that really matters.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Myung grasping at stats that mean little to Dwyane Wade’s playoff ability is kind of funny…..and that’s all that really matters.

  • Myung

I’m pretty certain that most national media members (and possibly the majority of SLAMonline commenters) will pick Miami to upset the Hawks in round 1, but that sort of disrespect (“Oh snap, I know he’s not playing the disrespect card”) is the status quo for Hawks fans.

  • Myung

What exactly is Dwyane Wade’s playoff ability, eboy? The ability to get to the line every time you even glance at him?

  • Myung

Actually, I’m kidding. He is one of my favorite players in the League, and I respect the heck out of him. He is going to absolutely light the Hawks up, but in the end, 5 players > 1 amazing superstar.

  • reflex

I’m Wade’s biggest Stan (move over Eboy) but I feel he has another 2-3 years at this level, maybe more who knows. Point I’m trying to make is, I hope the Heat GM can pull off a Mo Williamsesque trade or two to take the Heat to that next level. Boozer, Millsap, Gordon & Bosh are just some guys who may just help do that.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Uhm……..I think you’re trying that reverse psychology stuff, Myung, but it’s not going to work. It’s quite doubtful that any more than 2 of the SLAM writers will pick the Heat in an upset…..and I really doubt the rest of the major media outlets are going to all of a sudden jump on some miniscule Heat bandwagon just to spite the Hawks.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

reflex…….you can make that claim all you’d like. My last name’s not Union…..and I support the entire squad…..not just one dude.

  • Michael

@myung. The Playoffs are differnet from the regular season. Playoffs is all matchups, and if you can’t gaurd a teams best player you are going to have trouble winning that series.

  • reflex

chill out Eboy, it was a entirely jovial, no need to get your knickers in a twist…

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

I was only joking too…..just didn’t want to add a smiley face to it…..’cause it wouldn’t show up until 3 hours later through the moderation filters.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Izzo

Isn’t Eboy a Bulls fan anyway?

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

I’d like to see the hawks get out of the first round but not at the heats expense. I wanna see d wade in the ecf against the cavs.

  • http://www.realcavsfans.com Anton

So what are the odds of the Sixers sliding to the 8th seed?

  • reflex

    Apologies on my part then!

5 days till playoffs, I’m excited like a school kid!
I’m gonna make a bold prediction and say the Lakers DON’T make the Finals, the whole not playing consistent D is gonna catch up with them hard.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Hi Izzo……do you have any funny leprachaun jokes to share with us?

  • Myung

Nah, wasn’t reverse psychology at all. I strongly believe more people will pick the Heat over the Hawks. If I’m wrong, I’ll come back on here and apologize.

  • http://mindyourbusiness@getalife.com Allenp

Is Haslem still out for the Hawks series? If so, I can’t see Miami advancing without their rock, despite the superhuman abilities of DWade.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

    He’ll be back Allen.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Izzo

Eboy:I’ll tell it just as soon as you’re finished gelling your hair.See you in three hours.

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

Both teams are young but the hawks are an immature team in my opinion. Maybe I’m wrong but I think the heat have a little more maturity about them.

  • Myung

I agree with that assessment, Bryan. The only players I completely trust at all times are Al Horford, Marvin Williams, and Joe Johnson.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

    ^^^^that’s sexual harrasement!

  • http://basketball-reference.com nbk

Yeah because Mario Chalmers, Michael Beasley, Daequan Cook, Joel Anthony and Jamario Moon have all done this before….

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

I didn’t say experience you f*cking idiot I said maturity. Your stupidty never ceases to amaze me.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

pwned via Shia ‘the cold shoulder’ Bryan

  • http://mindyourbusiness@getalife.com Allenp

Yeah, I can see the maturity issue with the Hawks. Flip, Josh Smith and Mo Evans are very suspect. Bibby is semi-suspect only because I think he believes he is better than he truly is right now.
Even Joe Johnson can become a little immature and take some bad shots. But, typically Myung is right about the smart cats on the roster.
Then again, I don’t know if I trust Jamario Moon and O’Neal. Chalmers either. But, I do think Haslem and Wade have a better shot of keeping their knuckleheads under control.

  • Lz – Cphfinest3

Heat series is a coin toss imo. I think it will eventually come down to how well Jermaine copes with Horford. Other than that, WAde will be beasting, JJ aswell to a lesser extent. Josh will probably have a pretty even matchup with Beasley, whereas the rest of the Hawks supporting cast will outplay the Heat’s ditto (the Wade factor easily makes up for this). Horford-O’Neal is the key as I see it.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

I guess I’d take the Hawks due to home court, but the Heat have two things going for them that the Hawks don’t: 1) Wade is by far the best player on either team, and 2) The Heat aren’t coached by Mike Woodson.

  • Myung

Something I just realized: between Marv, Chalmers, and Horford, you’ve got guys who have been on the 4 previous NCAA Championship teams (not including last Monday’s UNC team, obviously) in Carolina, UF X 2, and Kansas.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Who else wouldn’t be shocked if a “story” came in the next week that Eric Spoelstra was busted for possession and Riley is on the sidelines for Game 1?

  • Myung

The “busted for possession” part might not happen, but the “Riley is on the sidelines for Game 1″…I could see.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

“Not i” said the cat in regards to eboy’s question

  • http://mindyourbusiness@getalife.com Allenp

Is Mike Woodson really a horrible coach?
I haven’t watched enough games to figure out why people hate him so much.
I can agree with LZ on the Horford vs. O’Neal matchup being a big deal, although I firmly expect Horford to win that battle. I actually think Magloire might suprise some folks though. With Haslem healthy, the Heat are somewhat deeper in the frontcourt than they Hawks who have nothing once you get past Williams, Horford and Smith. The Heat can at least bring Magloire and Anthony off the bench for spot minutes or in case of foul trouble.
It’ll be interesting to see the matchup between Joe Johnson and Wade. I don’t think Johnson can slow Wade down too much, but he has been known to take his game to another level in the playoffs.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

I’m just going off what I hear from frustrated Hawks fans. Allegedly he makes his substitutions by rolling one of those 12-sided Dungeons and Dragons dice (with Speedy Claxton’s name crossed out).

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

I’ll say it…..if Beasley plays at a 18-20pt/8 reb per game level…..the series will be over in 6 games in the Heat’s favor. That will mean Wade isn’t having to kill himself to do everything and the lane CANNOT be clogged with Beasley spacing the floor. He will hit j’s all day if whoever is guarding him (Marvin?) leaves.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

i saw Mike Woodson bench Josh Smith for the 2nd half of the bobcats game and that basically gave us the game this season. He is the only coach that bickers with a start player to the point where the win percentage is affected. Or at least that is what i think.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

And Marvin in turn won’t kill Beasley on the defensive side.

  • Myung

My answer to that, Allen, is “yes” and “no.” First of all, I’ve said all along that he’s probably a GREAT assistant coach. I think as a head coach, he leaves a lot to be desired. From a fan’s point of view, my biggest gripes with him are 1. He doesn’t call time out’s when the other team is on a run (and before you know it, we’re down by 15) 2. He calls time out’s when we’re on a run (thus killing our momentum) 3. His substitution patterns are often baffling and 4. The team has no offensive identity. That being said, you also have to wonder how terrible a coach is if he can deal with injuries to three starters in Marvin Williams (missed 19 games), Al Horford (missed 13 games), and Josh Smith (missed 12 games), while incorporating two new players (Mo Evans and Flip Murray) and losing their best bench player (Josh Childress) and still get 10 more wins than last season. It’s easy for people like me and CoCo (and pretty much every Hawks fan I know) to bash Woodson constantly, but the reality is, he’s better at his job than we’d ever be so…we’re probably way harsher on him than he deserves.

  • Myung

Allen, don’t forget Zaza. While he’s certainly no star, he’s just as capable as any big man the Heat can bring off their bench.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

    I just hope Zaza doesn’t get a big hea—oops.
