    Tension Mounting: Boston vs Cleveland

    by Marcel Mutoni

As the Cavs dominated, humiliated, and danced all over their arch nemesis from Boston yesterday, the Celtics were left with a bitter taste in their mouths. Particularly, Ray Allen, who promised that his team will not forget this loss (and the way Cleveland acted when the result was no longer in doubt) should the two teams meet once again in the postseason.

Allen also admitted that his elbow to Anderson Varejao’s groin was a cheap shot, but according the Celtics All-Star, the situation called for it. From the Plain Dealer:

“It was a dirty play, he threw me to the ground,” Allen said. “I’m not going to lie, I’ll always stand up for myself and anyone on this team. It’s in my nature. They’re not going to just walk all over us. I had to make a stand. It was embarrassing for us to get beat this way playing on national TV.”

It got worse in the fourth quarter when James, Williams and West were shown on the videoboard dancing to the Cavs’ latest tradition, playing 1980s Rick Astley hit “Never Gonna Give You Up” complete with music video in blowouts. Allen didn’t like that either.

“I’m always going to remember that,” Allen said. “If I beat a team, as happy as I may be in victory, I’m always going to stay humble…We play each other too much. Those are just great motivational thoughts for me.”

The best reaction, though, came from Varejao: “He doesn’t like Brazilians or maybe he doesn’t like my hair,” Varejao said. “You don’t hit a man in his [groin]. But I’m OK.”

Can we simply forego the formalities, and just get the Eastern Conference Finals started already?

too bad the Celtics cant beat them, or even put up a decent fight against them this year.

    • Spaceship Jay Posted: Apr.13 at 10:06 am
      Super…Groin…..ELBOW!!

    • ab_40 Posted: Apr.13 at 10:11 am
betcats if kg is healthy and powe is back they’re a whole ‘nother team, and the cavs know this won’t be the team they’ll be playing IF they meat in the playoffs. but wow ray allen… mr class ray allen? ah well I guess we’ll know who’s gonna score 25 ppg vs them in that series

    • Ken Posted: Apr.13 at 10:16 am
Honestly, LeBron is a great player and I’m amazed by the things he does on court, but I’m annoyed by the stupid antics he does: the KG powder, the photo with teammates shtick, the sideline dancing. And it sounds like their opponents dont like it either. LBJ could really learn from Tim Duncan, and realize that what matters is getting things done, and that it doesn’t pay to look like a dick doing it, especially when it motivates your opposition.

    • BETCATS Posted: Apr.13 at 10:18 am
ab_40, yeah they are. Like the team that lost 98-83 on January 9?

    • neaorin Posted: Apr.13 at 10:18 am
my thoughts: 1) Andy has balls of steel; 2) the Cavs like to party during every home blowout. It’s not directed at their opponents and nobody else has complained about it; 3) if the Celtics really needed that extra “motivation” they just got from seeing the Cavs fooling around, they’ve got bigger problems than getting blown out in a late regular reason game.

    • Darksaber Posted: Apr.13 at 10:28 am
tussle under the basket, then some hooking and when the larger man twists, the “smaller” man’s gonna go tumbling. The elbow was a natural reaction to prevent himself getting stomped on. Unlucky he hit him sideshow in the nutsack, but the rest is pretty normal fare. Like the fire Ray displayed though. But after going 9-1 before this game where was the swagger from the C’s, the fire?

    • Bigi Posted: Apr.13 at 10:31 am
How about that ” WeAreGonnaBlockEveryShotTactic” Boston did…I find that REALLY annoying.Let them Kidz dance,at least they are not doing the Soulja Boy or Macarena.

    • Bigi Posted: Apr.13 at 10:35 am
Ray Ray is just mad because of that block Bron shi**ed on him…

    • Bigi Posted: Apr.13 at 10:37 am
Sidenote:Sideshow has a small d**k,man I would be floored after that kind of hit!

    • Bigi Posted: Apr.13 at 10:38 am
Coz it’s not like he was in a pool or something…

    • riggs Posted: Apr.13 at 10:44 am
ima laugh my ass off when the cavs dont make it to the finals.

    • Darksaber Posted: Apr.13 at 10:48 am
Bron’s block was gorgeous but a goaltend (rejecting underhanded layups usually is).

    • Jumpman3224 Posted: Apr.13 at 10:49 am
The C’s handled them at home this season. Cavs held serve yesterday, but with KG back that 7 game series is going to be bananas. You know the video of those 3 dancing is going to be played over and over as the ECF draws near.

    • vtrobot Posted: Apr.13 at 10:50 am
Despite occasionally elbowing people’s nutz, this is why Ray has been one of the greatest things about the NBA during the last decade. “If I beat a team, as happy as I may be in victory, I’m always going to stay humble…We play each other too much. Those are just great motivational thoughts for me.” All that pre-game posing is really, really, really corny. Cavs fans, you like that? P.S. Thanks for the absolute beat down. We’ll get you back.

    • underdog Posted: Apr.13 at 10:58 am
Co sign Ken. LeBron is the perfect basketball player, and really admire him, because he is literally unstoppable, and sometimes he is playing too good to be fair. But when he’s off the court? He’s clowning himself, and whether you like it or not, this has an influence on his overall reputation as a basketball player.

    • Jukai Posted: Apr.13 at 10:58 am
Screw ‘dem haters, the pre-game dancing, the theatrics, the downright happiness, this is why I’m falling for the Cavs and have been rooting for them for the past three years. I love the whiny Celtics fans, funny how they were the people defending Garnett getting all fours and barking like a dog, and swatting every dead ball into the stands.

    • Jukai Posted: Apr.13 at 10:58 am
      hahaha@underdog. Sore loser.

    • underdog Posted: Apr.13 at 10:59 am
And for this loss you can blame nobody, but Marbury.

    • Jumpman3224 Posted: Apr.13 at 11:03 am
Ken: agreed. he should have wanted to learn from TD anyways after that school yard beatdown he got served in the finals back in 07

    • underdog Posted: Apr.13 at 11:05 am
Jukai: I’m not a die-hard Celtics fan, but I admit, I root for them, because of the Steph&KG duo, and I dig Skywalker too. But if you truly amazed by the pre-game stuff, you should join to a cheerleader squad and live the hype.

    • Ryan Jones Posted: Apr.13 at 11:07 am
Anyone else remember how restrained and humble the Celtics bench was during the last five minutes of Game 6 of the FInals last year? Remember them pouring Gatorade on the court while the f*cking game was still being played? I like Ray, but he needs to shut the f*ck up on this one. If you don’t like to see a team celebrating when they’re beating you’re brains in, don’t get your brains beat in, champ.

    • Coach Master Posted: Apr.13 at 11:08 am
No one likes to be humiliated. The Celtics were beaten like a rag doll. But it was Easter, so the Celtics limped away with a sore keaster…or something.

    • Jukai Posted: Apr.13 at 11:12 am
Co-sign Ryan. I wonder when the Celtics start to lose, if they’re going to become whiners.

    • Spaceship Jay Posted: Apr.13 at 11:16 am
To all that hate the theatrics; When Lebron’s behavior acts as motivation to HIS team. I can recall Magic Johnson doing the same to an extent; uplifting his team to the point that they feel like they can do anything. If other teams don’t like it, beat them, and they won’t do it anymore. I Promise.

    • vtrobot Posted: Apr.13 at 11:16 am
@ Jukai and Ryan: I agree with you on one level and I don’t like classy Ray doin’ what he did yesterday, but do you think there might be a difference in the excitement level at the end of the game that wins you the championship (especially when you’ve had the collective careers of the big three) and during the end of a game IN THE REGULAR SEASON? I’m not whining about anything. It was a full-on beat down. Hopefully the C’s can deliver one back but that won’t be easy as LeBron is getting iller by the day and that’s a scary team. People doubted the C’s during the whole playoffs last year. This should be fun to watch. Upset from #8-seed Jazz in the 1st round? C’mon! YEAH! Let me dream.

    • Darksaber Posted: Apr.13 at 11:18 am
RJ: Ray can say whatever he wishes. He’s earned the right. And yes, he IS a champ! Is your boy one yet? Naaah.

    • Russ Bengtson Posted: Apr.13 at 11:19 am
Why do you want the Eastern Conference Finals to start? Are you in THAT much of a rush to see Cavs/Bulls? Sheesh, and I thought I was impatient.

    • Jukai Posted: Apr.13 at 11:20 am
So because Ray won a ring riding KG and double P, he can hit someone in the balls? Cool beans.

    • Darksaber Posted: Apr.13 at 11:23 am
i love the hidden optimism in Russ’s statement. Especially since he was hoping Bulls would’nt make the postseason so as not to mask Vinny’s weaknesses and Paxson’s slip up’s. Now? ECF, dudes! What a difference a Salmons makes.

    • Diesel Posted: Apr.13 at 11:27 am
I don’t uynderstand how getting the Eastern Conference Finals started and watching the Bulls play the Cavs is going to solve anything.

    • Diesel Posted: Apr.13 at 11:28 am
And now I just read Russ’s statement. Damn it I thought I was being original

    • Russ Bengtson Posted: Apr.13 at 11:32 am
Dark: I’m a little happier about it since a) they might not be the eight seed, and b) they’re gonna be either at or awfully close to .500. I didn’t want them backing into the postseason at, like, 37-45. And I do think that Rose and Tyrus and the other youngsters could use the playoff experience. Plus, maybe they could accidentally leave Luol in Orlando. This changes nothing about my feelings for Vinny and Pax, however.

    • Darksaber Posted: Apr.13 at 11:36 am
that’s cool Russ. I also hate playoff teams with negative records.

    • Russ Bengtson Posted: Apr.13 at 11:43 am
And if they can play spoiler to a top seed, even better. If Ray Allen hates Anderson Varejao, he oughta love Joakim Noah.

    • Darksaber Posted: Apr.13 at 11:47 am
hmm. That’s a bruce wayne/batman thing there, Russ. Have you ever seen Sideshow and Yanick’s son in the same room at the same time. Me neither.

    • CSP8 Posted: Apr.13 at 11:47 am
Is this coming from a guy on the same team that had a starter in the game, in the fourth quarter of a 40 point blow-out?

    • Bryan Posted: Apr.13 at 11:47 am
F*ck the celtics. With all the antics they had last season and this is how they respond?

    • Bruno, RJ Posted: Apr.13 at 12:01 pm
i willl feel just pleased if the C’s deliver a 4-0 to the shlt-cavs.
too bad positioning will matter too much this year.
celtics x magics will be very tough.

    • MeloMan13 Posted: Apr.13 at 12:07 pm
@ Ryan: the difference between the Celts celebrating and the Cavs celebrating is that one happened during the most important game of their careers. the other happened in a meaningless regular season game. im pretty sure if u were about to win the chip’, u wudn’t be able to hole it in either

    • Chendaddy Posted: Apr.13 at 12:08 pm
Ray, kind of quiet when it was your own guy getting on all fours and barking like a dog or clapping his hands in Jose Calderon’s face though, huh? Talk about bulletin boards all you want, you have the ultimate bulletin board material for other teams dressing your own locker room.

    • Jackie Moon Posted: Apr.13 at 12:10 pm
      There’s no crying in basketball!

    • neaorin Posted: Apr.13 at 12:12 pm
MeloMan13: and if Kobe had taken a swing at Ray-Ray’s nads during that game, he would’ve been vilified for it. But now since it’s the Celtics, they’re just “being competitive”. Right. Was KG being “competitive” when was taunting Jose Calderon earlier this season, or was he just acting like a complete douche bag? The Cs have some nerve to complain about other teams when the sh*t they pull is twice as bad.

    • MeloMan13 Posted: Apr.13 at 12:25 pm
@ Neaorin: to answer ur quesstion about Jose and Kg: yes, Kg was being competitive. i’m a raptors fan and I was not mad at Kg at all. i was more upset at the fact that NONE of the Raptors stood up to him. honestly, players are too soft and they should be going at eachother more often

    • Diesel Posted: Apr.13 at 12:30 pm
Aren’t the celtics the same team that dumped gatorade on Doc Rivers in the finals before the game was even over?

    • riggs Posted: Apr.13 at 12:31 pm
@Ryan Jones: game 6 of the finals? thats your best argument? LMAO. let that marinate for awhile.

    • Diesel Posted: Apr.13 at 12:33 pm
f*ck Ryan wrote my comment first too. I really need to start reading all these comments before I post.

    • Diesel Posted: Apr.13 at 12:35 pm
riggs only d-bags dump gatorade on someone in a basketball game. I don’t care what the situation is.

    • Eboy Posted: Apr.13 at 12:46 pm
Is it possible that this could be decided by a KG/Bron powder battle?

    • Jukai Posted: Apr.13 at 12:54 pm
NO WAY MELOMAN IS A RAPTORS FAN! After KG shoved his hand in Jose’s face, Jose made a great pass and GOT RIGHT BACK in KG’s face. That was an unforgettable moment. So I call shenanigans on Melo being a Raptor fan.

    • Anton Posted: Apr.13 at 1:41 pm
They’re just mad because Bill Walker got blocked by Wally Sczerbiak. Cavs’ bench exploded like 24 at a Britney Spears concert.
“That should be an automatic ejection” - Jeff Van Gundy.

    • Allenp Posted: Apr.13 at 1:47 pm
People who complain about other team’s celebrating are wack.
      There is no wiggle room.
If you’re beating their @ss, they won’t be celebrating.
      It’s real simple.

    • seppo Posted: Apr.13 at 2:14 pm
This is not the first time Ray Allen has acted like a jerk. In the summer of 2007 he got kicked out of a gym because he offended the owner. Yet somehow he is viewed as a good guy.

    • Eboy Posted: Apr.13 at 2:40 pm
Strangley, there was no report of Glenn Davis crying during the Cavs celebratory activities.

    • tealish Posted: Apr.13 at 2:44 pm
Ray took a cheap shot, but I doubt (his class throughout his career has earned it) that he was aiming for Varejao’s groin. He was probably going for a gut-shot but I’m surprised he wasn’t thrown out or was he?
I don’t mind the Cavs celebrating but I’m just tired of seeing their pretend photo ops in pre-game. Ugh, played out. If they want to keep doing it, fine. Just don’t be broadcasting that sh*t non-stop.

    • Anton Posted: Apr.13 at 3:06 pm
^he wasn’t thrown out, and Cavs have stopped doing the photo op since losing twice in a row last week.

    • tenorca Posted: Apr.13 at 3:07 pm
Another example of the namby-pamby new millenium NBA. Just watch some Kemp highlights and even it out.

    • Lz - Cphfinest3 Posted: Apr.13 at 3:10 pm
Tenorca I couldn’t agree more. Just ask Alton Lister, a little taunting is ok.

    • Epsilon Nupe Posted: Apr.13 at 3:42 pm
Ray Allen is upset because he doesnt like when A team tauts his team after a dominating win?!?!? Did he forget how disrespectful they were when they had the Lakers down and out in game 6, and Paul Decided it would be a great idea to dump Gatorade on Doc Rivers with 3 MINUTES LEFT IN THE GAME. Ray needs to be real with himself, if you dont want a team embrassing you, put up a better effort, but dont get mad when a team does what your team did all year last season

    • tenorca Posted: Apr.13 at 3:47 pm
Lz—The Lister Blister! Oh man. I gotta watch that again. One of the greatest dunks ever. Kemp was just, ugh, he was a mammal.

    • Josh D(Spurs Fan) Posted: Apr.13 at 4:37 pm
This is why i think these Celtics will never be a dynasty they let their egos come onto the court with them(Starbury)

    • Lz - Cphfinest3 Posted: Apr.13 at 5:11 pm
Tenorca; Kemp being a mammal might explain his omnipresent libido.

    • Harlem_World Posted: Apr.13 at 5:38 pm
Ray Ray talking up is good for the game. He should keep talking. Whatever adds fuel to the rivalry is all good as far as I’m concerned. Even with KG and Powe back, it’s going to take some throwback type years from the big 3 to get out of the East this year. As good as Bron has shown, something tells me the best is yet to come. I want him to go through Boston and then the Lakers at full strength so there can be no arguments left as to who the best player in the game is now and for the forseeable.

    • BostonBaller Posted: Apr.13 at 6:18 pm
We got spanked Sunday and that’s all there is to it. Does anyone read the comments before writing the same thing again..How many times do we have to read about the gatorade? 1 shot to the groin does not make Ray a cheapshot artist or a bad guy just like James making muscle poses doesn’t make him a jerk. The game is supposed to be fun.

    • K Posted: Apr.13 at 6:24 pm
Out of all the times I see Varejao end up on the floor after no/little contact, he doesn’t even flinch after an elbow to the crotch?!? Unbelievable.

    • BostonBaller Posted: Apr.13 at 6:32 pm
neaorin: What would you have Ray or any other player say when asked about another team celebrating? “It’s fine, i thought they looked good”? He never berated them for it he simply stated that he would remember it which I hope they all do…no athlete worth anything would forget it, they “try” to use it the next time. Mr Jones & Jukai: I may have missed the post game interviews but was there a lot of whining from the C’s or is what Allen said pretty much it? Did Allen really ride coat tails last year? He was in a shooting slump for a bit but I believe he picked his game up in other areas. It’s amazing how a die hard Kobe fan throws his name in this one. lol. James is a beast w/ a license to kill…

    • Melo&JR2daRaptors Posted: Apr.13 at 7:06 pm
      LOOOL @Jukai.
i believe Meloman iss in fact a raptors fan and just has an extreme dislike for Jose Caledron

    • Kozmic Posted: Apr.13 at 8:15 pm
This is gonna be one hell of a post-season.

    • chintao Posted: Apr.13 at 10:47 pm
      @ Jukai Posted: Apr.13 at 11:20 am ==> Actually, Ray A. carried Double P to the C’hip.

    • John D Posted: Apr.13 at 10:54 pm
I love how Ryan came in and compared a meaningless regular season game to winning a f*cking championship. Just when I think his head can’t fit any higher up Lebron’s a*s.

    • Darksaber Posted: Apr.13 at 11:05 pm
      what john d said.

    • ddavekk Posted: Apr.14 at 12:49 am
Celtics are whiners and sore losers and cheap shotters. Cavs are funny and having a good time. End of story.

    • George B Posted: Apr.14 at 1:50 am
      Let the kidz have fun

    • the other guy Posted: Apr.14 at 2:20 am
With KG back, the Celtics are gonna kick @$$. KG vs. Varejao ^^ what a joke.

    • neaorin Posted: Apr.14 at 4:11 am
@BostonBaller: how about Allen getting a clue from Paul Pierce and saying “it’s cool, winning is fun and you’re supposed to enjoy it”? Would that work? (click my name for Globe article)

    • nba-jersey-king Posted: Apr.14 at 6:25 am
@Kozmic - I agree - the West and East should be so close - a lot of 7 game series!

    • Fred34 Posted: Apr.14 at 8:21 am
Nah, eff that. Vare-Shove-O is up 20 pts in a blowout against a short sided squad, he’s blockin out a guy he’s got what 8 inches and 80 pounds on, throws him to the ground in an arm lock and THEN STANDS OVER THE GUY. He’s just lucky that it was only Ray Allen who is not mean or dirty, cuz he was pushing with his elbow trying to make some room from that smelly hippy lookin turd (not aiming mind you). I’d like to see him try that on someone his size – he’d wind up in ICU

    • Fred34 Posted: Apr.14 at 8:24 am
I still think it’s gonna look funny as hell when Joe Smith and Wally get rings but KG and Steph miss out.

    • t2c.wah Posted: Apr.14 at 9:03 am
Varejao is a dirty player… just ask Zizis from Greece who got his nose broken by this Brazilian trans’:
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSZwwbRsLbY

    • Jukai Posted: Apr.14 at 10:00 am
chintao: I don’t really feel like pulling up stats, but Ray Allen was awful in the first three games and only game alive in games 2 through 6 of the Finals. That’s inexcusable. If you don’t believe me, I’ll find the stats at lunch.

    • BostonBaller Posted: Apr.14 at 12:16 pm
neaorin, that article was ok but it proved nothing except that as a whole the team probably wasn’t devastated by the loss or the celebration. Pierce was cool and diplomatic but you better believe he will remember everything about the game. Does that mean Allen had to make nice when he answered a question? He was probably more pissed at the incident than the celebration. Again, does his answer all of a sudden make him classless or a whiner?

    • BostonBaller Posted: Apr.14 at 12:26 pm
Ok, Ray Allen wasn’t great in all of the games during the playoffs but does that make his play inexcusable? You can waste your lunch time pulling stats but we all know stats only tell part of the story. His defense was pretty good but Pierce got most of the credit and Allen did what is called “intangibles”. lol. Allen more than earned his money and to say he rode coattails is inexcusable.

    • BostonBaller Posted: Apr.14 at 12:37 pm
I love my Celtics but i don’t hate any particular team. Even in the heat of battle of the 80’s I didn’t HATE the Lakers..I loved seeing them and couldn’t wait until the big matchups with them. If we had these open forums back then I can just imagine Celtic fans writing how much Magic, Worthy or Kareem sucked and Laker fans writing the same about Bird, McHale or Parish. It would have been dumb then just like it is now for ppl to write that Kobe, James, Wad or whomever sucks just to try and boost their favorite player or team. (IMO) It’s fun to rag on other players but I think some ppl actually start believing the garbage they write. lol. I can’t wait for the playoffs, I’ll be watching as many games as possible regardless of the matchups!!!!!! I LOVE THIS GAME!!!!

    • Jukai Posted: Apr.14 at 2:43 pm
BostonBaller: what intangibles did Ray Allen bring? I believe Garnett brought the defensive intensity and Pierce brought the fire in the fourth. Allen was really the weak link during the playoffs. I’m not downgrading Allen over his career, he’s been fantastic and is one of the best shooting guards of our generation. He has proved his clutchness in the playoffs in his previous seasons when the Sonics were a good team. He just had a slump at possibly one of the worst times.
So stop trying to cover for him here.

    • vtrobot Posted: Apr.14 at 5:10 pm
Ray had one of his worst slumps and then didn’t he also break a record for 3’s in a Finals game? Yeah, bad time to lose the shooting touch, but it didn’t lose the Finals for them. Also, when you’re breaking records, you don’t need someone to “cover” for you.

    • nick Posted: Apr.14 at 8:49 pm
Allen can say he will remember it but all that stuff doesnt mean anything when the ball gets tossed up. Is he gonna shoot a better 3 point% this post season because of it? Just play ball and stay classy.

    • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Apr.14 at 9:59 pm
Ummm, how was Ray Allen a weak link, when he was arguably good enough to win Finals MVP? Riding the coattails? That’s got to be a joke.
      Also, co-sign John D. 10:54 pm.
      Thanks and goodnight.

    • Surreal Posted: Apr.15 at 12:07 am
This is why I hate the Celtics, when they win they act like punks and tough guys but when they get beat they act like big babies. Why can’t they be dignified champs like the Spurs, humble in victory and humble in defeat.

    • BostonBaller Posted: Apr.15 at 8:46 am
Co-sign Teddy TB: @Jukai, did you watch the playoffs? Most players would kill to have Allens “slump”. Since numbers is all some people look at then I have numbers for you.

I might as well give the Finals numbers for the coattail rider: Lakers G1:19p,5a,8r G2:17p,2a,2r G3:25p,2a,5r(pp6p) G4:19p,2a,9r,3s G5:16p,2a,2r G6:26p,2a,4r,3stls. If that is riding coattails then I’m sure there are a lot of players that would love to grab hold. lol. His numbers weren’t eye popping but they weren’t as horrible as some would like to say they were. Check for yourself. Now lets go play some ball….
