The Post Up: Bobcats Beat LA

And Rasual Butler breaks Sacramento’s heart.

by Holly MacKenzie/ @stackmack

Big night, tired hands. Burning wrists, actually. Gotta try to keep this short.

THE MOST IMPORTANT NEWS: Shaun Livingston getting signed to a two-year deal with the Thunder. I just typed Hornets in there, think it’s because I’m watching the Kings/Hornets. Also cried at Vlade’s halftime ceremony. That stuff KILLS me. I love that they scheduled it with the Hornets in town so that Peja would be there.

So, yes. Livingston is on an NBA squad. I’m loving that all over town. You couldn’t wipe the smile off of my face yesterday. I know all of you SLAM people feel the same way and share my hopes for Shaun, that he gets a chance to live his dream.

Scot Pollard opened his speech by saying, “Vlade-Daad-e, he likes to party” Pollard’s pretty great. Chris Webber needs to be a public speaker or run for office or something where I can watch him and zone in. He’s an amazing speaker.

Funny story: After Z scored his 10,000th point, Delonte West was unaware of the milestone and kicked the game ball into the stands after the game. This kills me. Classic Delonte.

Sheed got called for his 16th technical last night for jawing with an official. He will now be suspended a game. Not good for the Pistons as they fight to remain in the 7th spot. It was fun seeing Sheed scream “That ball don’t lie” after Mo Williams missed the tech free throw, though.

I’d like Gerald Wallace on my team. That man is amazing.

Also, cool to see MJ on the sidelines cheering for his team. That has to feel good when you come to the bench and Jordan is on his feet. Fun watching him watch Kobe, too.

BETCATS, this is for you: Charlotte Bobcats took down the Lakers last night, 94-84. Second straight loss for the Lakers, and Charlotte looked good. Raja Bell forced Kobe into 28 shots for his 25 points, Pau did his best with 16/11/7 and Lamar added 20. Gerald Wallace was a beast with 21 points, 13 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 blocked shots. Boris Diaw had 11 points and 12 assists and Raymond Felton added 16.

With the Bulls 107-105 loss to the Pacers, the Bobcats are only one game out of the eighth spot in the East. TJ Ford hit a jumper at the buzzer to give the Pacers the victory. The loss was the Bulls second straight road loss in a close game. Danny Granger had 31 points to lead the Pacers while Ford had 22 and 9 assists off of the bench. Derrick Rose had 25 points, 11 rebounds and 6 assists for Chicago as Kirk Hinrich and Tyrus Thomas each added 20 in the loss.

Hawks fell to the Sixers, 98-85.  Josh Smith had 33 for ATL in the loss and Flip Murray added 19 off of the bench. Andre Miller had 18 points and 10 asssts, Andre Igoudala scored 19 and Marreese Speights added 16 off of the bench.

Detroit held a lead for most of the first half against the Cavs in Cleveland, but Bron and Co. came roaring back as the Pistons scored only 29 points in the entire second half of the game to fall, 79-73. Bron had 25 points and 12 rebounds while Delonte West scored 12. The Pistons had 13 points from Rip Hamilton and 9 points/9 boards from Sheed.

Dallas took down Minny by 20, 108-88. Suns are now done like dinner. Dirk had 23 points and 12 rebounds… And so did Kevin Love. Love also had 3 assists.

On the same day that OKC adds SLAM-favorite Shaun Livingston to their roster (and had him sitting on the bench), the Thunder grabbed a huge victory over the Spurs, 96-95 when Michael Finley missed a jumper at the buzzer only seconds after hitting a three to keep the Spurs in it. Kevin Durant had 31 points, Russell Westbrook scored 16 to go with 10 assists and Jeff Green scored 16 as well. The Spurs were led by Tim Duncan’s 21 points and 12 boards as Manu Ginobili added 17.

The Nuggets held on for the 111-104 victory over the Knicks after giving up a 27-point lead. D’Antoni played only seven guys and they gave the Nuggets a run for their money. Nate Robinson scored 30 for the Knicks off of the bench as Al Harrington scored 23 and David Lee had 19 points and 12 boards. The Nugg’s were led by Melo’s 29 points while Nene had 18 points and 12 boards and JR Smith added 17 off of the bench.

On the night of Vlade’s jersey retiring, the Kings pushed the Hornets to the limit… And then the Hornets woke up. After Francisco Garcia scored on consecutive trips down the floor to tie the game at 108, he then blocked a layup attempt by Chris Paul and Beno Udrih hit a layup with 1.7 seconds remaining. While the Kings thought they were safe and had delivered a victory with Valde and the other former Kings in attendence, Peja got the last laugh as Rasual Butler hit a beaty three at the buzzer. David West scored 40 on the night to go with 9 rebounds and 6 assists. Chris Paul had 15 points 15 assists and 8 rebounds and Butler added 18. Andres Nocioni had 23 for the Kings while Garcia added 19 and Kevin Martin scored 20.

Protland killed the Jazz 125-104. BRoy had 25 and 11. Pryzbilla and Boozer and Sloan were all ejected. I didn’t see any of this game. Feel free to fill me in.

Lucky for the Lakers, there is no chance they will face the Cats in the playoffs, unless the team gets moved.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Also, guess who is literally ALREADY complaining about playing time?
    Hi Iverson!

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Can we be slighlty serious for a moment? Soon……I will expect an apology from every intelligent Laker fan that chided me and the rest of the non-Lakers fans that have pointed out the teams deficiencies since…..well….since you all have spoken about the team as if they had NO flaws. I hope the realistic ones are now starting to see the team for what it is…….the 2009 version of the 2006 Dallas Mavericks. Fantastic regular season record…….super talented starting unit…..a bench of nothingness….and a team without D/heart that will have a HARD time getting to the Finals….let alone win it. I’m not gloating either…..and there’s no slight toward Mambo in here either…..their team is tremendously overrated…..I think it’s starting to come out in the wash now. Let’s just say this…….11 points from your bench?…..Against the BETcats? That’s just disgusting.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Justin Walsh

I love the Protland Blazers :) aw i kid i kid Holly, great stuff. BET, WAKE UP BET ITS YO TIIIIME. Eboy, wha’s gooood

  • http://slamonline.com/ Justin Walsh

Eboy, me personally, I think the Lakers SUCK defending the 3 defensively, I’ve thought that all year, as a huge Laker fan. But I don’t think they will have a hard time getting to the finals. Look to the same team you compared them to, the 2006 Mavs. They didn’t have much heart OR Defensive presence *i lived in Dallas during the years when the Mavs were title contenders* & they got to the finals getting through a MUCH MUCH MUCH more loaded western conference. San Antonio was at it’s prime, The suns were at their prime, the Mavs were at their prime, the Rockets were not a fun matchup, I mean come on the Mavs got to the finals in a way harder time. The Lakers wont have trouble getting to the finals, but they might have trouble winning it all. But they are very capable of beating the Cavs, they’ve shown that already. and unless KG is healthy, the Lakers can beat the Celtics, the C’s are very beatable without a healthy KG, that’s been shown as well.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

And I know….I know…..58 wins……huge lead in the West…..”we have the Mamba”…..”wait till Bynum is back”….we all know that stuff too…..they are a really good basketball team…….but they just don’t have the air of a champion, like the mainstream press (Hi Lang Whitaker)promoted from the beginning of the season. That’s really it……their bench is going to come back to really hurt them in the long run.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Eboy: I apologize for overhyping the Lakers defensively. They were FAR better in the beginning of the season, I have no idea what has happened to that defensive intensity and the passion in the beginning of the season. Did it go missing with Bynum?
Eboy: I still think they’re going to reach the Finals.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

    Three things: Kevin Frickin Love.
    Three more things
    1, Good for Shaun Livingston.
2, I thought THE MOST IMPORTANT NEWS last night was Penn State advancing to the NIT finals?
3, Speaking of the NIT and the Cavs, Jay Williams was doing the studio stuff for the follower last night, and talk understandably turned to the UK-Memphis-Coach Cal news. Among other things, Jay was talking about what kind of NBA player Tyreke Evans would be. He was trying to compare him to some of the combo guards currently doing well in the NBA, and as a point of comparison, he actually said — I could not and would not make this up — ”like Bootsy Thornton in Cleveland.”
If anyone can help me even start to make sense of this, I’d appreciate it.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Good try, Justin……but your vision is clouded. I respect your opinion.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Justin Walsh

Eboy, I won’t say “wait til Bynum is back” I won’t say the huge lead in the west. I will say we have Kobe, because the Cavs argument is we have lebron. then you say oh but the Cavs are great at home, then i ask you who gave the Cavs their only home loss, and you simply reply…..”the lakers.” The Celtics could give the Lakers major problems in the finals if KG is healthy.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Jukai……name a team that won a Final with barely ANY contribution from their bench? The Lakers will have to do that this season. I’ll wait. It’s early.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

I mean, I know EVERYONE will be bashing either Iverson or Kobe today… but like, you guys know the Spurs DID lose to the Thunder, right?

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

So a mid season game that the Cavs played pretty poorly in will be the thing you’ll rest your hat on if they were to meet in a Finals series? Good idea.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Eboy: None. I’m with ya, buddy.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Jukai……I have a theory about the Spurs…….I think Pop is fuc*ing with everyone. Can a Spurs fan tell us just how their rotation patterns are running from game to game?

  • http://slamonline.com/ Justin Walsh

Eboy, we both know I’m Laker biased, hah. And Ryan, I’ve seen Evans play for the past few years…He needs to get SOME semblance of a jumpshot, he also needs to stop hunching over when he dribbles. He doesn’t play springloaded with his legs bent and his posture right, he plays with his back bent and he’s basically just straight legged with his torso bent over- he can dribble but his posture is like frankenstein when he has the ball. He also can’t shoot to save his life, this much is not argued. The counter argument may be “but Wade couldn’t either” I respond simply by saying that Evans has nowhere near the athleticism Wade had, Wade was a better FT shooter, Wade was better midrange. Evans literally has one ability right now, drive to the rack. He’s not a good passer, he turns it over alot, he can’t shot to save his life. In his best game against Missouri, he drove into the lane for all his points, missed all threes attempted and missed every shot taht wasn’t a layup. He is very good getting to the hole, but if you think he can do THAT well in the league with that one talent, I reply with “Sebastian Telfair”

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Eboy: I have a theory too. The Spurs are dunzo. But, I’m a Suns fan, so, you know, take that theory with a grain of salt.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

I’m not bashing Bean today. His poor shooting of late has to do with the fact that minutes are starting to catch up to him. When was the last time the Lakers had their bench guys running 4th quarters like they were in December and January? The Lakers starters HAVE to play big minutes for them to win games…..luckily they have a big talent base there.

  • Myung

The Lakers fear the Southeastern Division, obviously.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Ryan: Isn’t it AMAZING how when Jefferson, who plays the EXACT SAME POSITION AND STYLE AS K LOVE goes down, Kevin Love’s stats go up? It’s mind boogling. Who would of thought this? Certainly not the Wolves front office.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

I don’t know about that, Jukai. They could be finished…..but then I look at their record…..see they’re really just 10 games behind the Lakers with all the games they lost to Manu and Parker’s injuries (and the few The Robot missed) and think that wide gap is pretty misleading as to the seperation of the two squads.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

hey whitehot. Comparing these lakers to da 06 Mavs is an embarassment…… For the Mavs. Ka-ching!

  • Myung

Although I’m quick to criticize Josh, I’ll be fair to him and give him his props: he had a GREAT game last night in the loss. And btw, that game last night shows you why I prefer playing the Heat over the 76ers in Round 1. Sorry if this offends you eboy (as I’m sure it will), but Philly scares me more than Miami.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

I think by June……we’re going to be looking at the comparison pretty favorably.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

I wish Chicago and Charlotte would stop f*cking around and overtake the Pistons already.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Eboy: I’m not looking at the record, I mean, if we’re looking at records, then the Lakers are still the odds on favorite outside of the Cavs to win the NBA Finals, and that’s been thrown in doubt.
Something is definitely wrong with the Spurs. Manu looks AWFUL (he needs to recover fast), Duncan hasn’t been performing well in the fourth, and their ‘bench’ may be worse than the Lakers. Really! Think about that! That’s why I give Parker so much credit for the season. I look at this team and it PALES in comparison to the dynasty it once had. No bench, injury ravished big three… how they have the record they have is purely because of Parker and Pops.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

I don’t really care who the Heat play, Myung. I’m just glad they were competitive this season. I do think they will take your squad out in 6 though. Dwyane will not be deterred….at least for one round against a mid-level squad. If they drop to six and play the Celts…..it will be a demolition…..although I’d like to see KG try and talk his faux sh*t to UD & JO from game to game.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

so OKC own the spurs, and the ‘cats own LA & to a certain level, the celtics. Can we get these teams in the playoffs to truly screw with the minds of the favourites? And Thabo, 2 points in 29 minutes? Come on, dude. Short of running your lungs off while limiting TP, Manu AND Mason to a 6-47 shooting night, that is an inexcusable stat line.

  • The Last Kings Fan

Vlade’s ceremony was awsome, but I think Webb’s was actually better…maybe just because I had such high expectations for Vlade’s. But David West played amazingly; he sprained his ankle in the first quarter, was visibly limping almost the entire game and scored 40. Impressive to say the least

Can’t wait to read what’s been gathering in BET’s head since last night’s clampdown win against hell-A.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

I’m actually surprised that BET didn’t take the day off from school and just sat on here all day typing out play by play game notes from last night.

Eboy, that would be 100% BET to a T.

  • http://vnsny.org Spaceship Jay

I co-sign Eboy’s comparison of the 09 Lakers to the 06 Mavericks. I saw that hunger at the begenning/mid-point of this season, but fail to see it now. They actually remind me more of the 04 Lakers, swearing that their gonna “turn it on” when the Playoffs start.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

Holly: burning wrists? wha..? Kings timed around Peja coming to town? Is this fact, or your opinion?

I’m surprised no one mentioned how Portland destroyed the Jazz last night. The Blazers seem to be peaking at a good time. Right now they are slated to play Houston and that would be a great series.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Also, Denver is currently the 2nd seed in the West. Now, all of this can change from game to game and it will be interesting to watch.

TAD: Remember when I said if I were the Spurs, I’d be afraid of Portland because there’s no way they could beat Portland in a seven game series with Portland’s youth and energy?
Remember how everyone shrugged that off?
    Yeeeeeeep.
    Just saying.
    That’s all.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Ritchie must be BET’s cousin or brother.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

I know I didn’t shrug it off, Jukai. However, it is one thing to be wary of a team, it is quite another to beat a veteran-laden team 4 out of 7 games. Regardless, 2.5 games seperate teams in the West from seeds 2 thru 7. With around 8 games left, things could change quite drastically.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

TAD: The Spurs lost to the Thunder yesterday. The Thunder. Veteran-laden is another word for too old and injury prone.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

And the Lakers lost to the Bobcats. Your point?

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

My point is, call a spade a spade. If the Lakers losing to the Bobcats is a sign, then the Spurs losing to the Thunder is a sign.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

I don’t think either is a sign. For whatever reason, the Bobcats have the Lakers number. For whatever reason, the Thunder seem to play the Spurs tough, considering they have won 2 out of 3 against them. In a little over two weeks, it won’t matter.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

There is the possibility that a regular-season loss in April is just one loss and it’s not worth getting all hyped up about. Otherwise you may as well just give Cleveland the championship trophy now and we can all go about our business. Oh wait, the Cavs lost to the Wizards on January 10, so they suck, too.

  • http://www.twofistedpress.com Pve84

Could someone explain to me how the Suns are done? I’m fully aware that I may be reaching–the Suns are, of course, old and 4 games behind the Mavs and both teams have 8 games left. However, the Mavs are playing 4 playoff bound teams(NO twice), the Suns, Memphis, and the T-wolves. The Suns are playing 3 playoff bound teams, including Dallas, and 5 teams that are thoroughly below .500. Considering this, I think the Suns still have a viable chance, especially since they know that they’re backs are against the wall.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Here is the bigger question: What does Calipari going to Kentucky mean for the college basketball universe? What about all of those recruits that were going to Memphis?

  • Squirrel7

Realistically, how far do you think the Blazers can get? I’d go out on a limb and say Western Conference finals. How I’d love to see an unexpected finals (Hornets/Magic, for example) if only to p*ss Stern off.

  • http://coco-vents.blogspot.com Co Co

    What Russ said.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Justin Walsh

TAD, I know the answer for you. Cousins didn’t sign his LOI so he wont go to Memphis. You think he’d immediately go to Kentucky, but that’s not true. Loyalty is a big thing for Cousins, he decommitted from UAB due to lack of trust and might not trust Calipari now. Cousins openly stated he might go to Alabama now. Xavier Henry is VISIBLY depressed about Calipari leaving (he looked like he was going to cry during the McDonalds AA press conferences) and hasn’t said he will go to Kentucky (he signed his LOI but has a clause that will let him out if Calipari left, Nolan Dennis has the same clause) and in fact most think that after this he will go to KU. Nolan Dennis wont be going to Memphis, not sure WHERE he will go, some think Texas A&M. And let’s talk about John Wall- people thought he was leaning toward Memphis. Then John Wall visited Duke over the weekend & it is thought that he will commit there in all probability in a few weeks or so. The Memphis greattt recruiting class will probably be totally torn apart without ever getting to the campus. Calipari might be a great recruiting class, but he might have screwed this class. In fact, he told the players that already signed to go to Memphis (Henry & Dennis) to go to Memphis and didn’t ask him to follow according to Forde of ESPN. So this is just crazy.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

    Good thoughts, Walsh.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Justin Walsh

by the way, CJ Henry, Xaviers brother will be leaving Memphis as well. Also, Tyreke said he’s not returning to Memphis BECAUSE Calipari left. Also, I spoke with about a dozen or so highly ranked recruits and about half of them said they think Calipari is shady as hell and “is not to be trusted” and the other half said they don’t care, but that it was messed up that he did Xavier like that. Either way, this is going to change the recruiting landscape to a degree

By the way, this might sound a little ethically dubious…but if John Wall goes to Duke, one of two things will happen- all of the people he grew up with will be pissed that a local product goes to the outcast Duke (people in NC especially people in the poorer areas hate Duke)instead of UNC or Wake…Or it will make Duke’s fanbase larger in the state. Either way, it’s weird.

Last year, in late March, the Lakers lost three straight home games—to the Warriors, Bobcats and Grizzlies. Over an 11-day span that very same month, the Spurs lost six of seven games. They still wound up facing each other in the Western Conference Finals come late May.

I just think that both teams have developed several problems (both benches are suddenly failing epically, both teams third men are injured, both are having a very difficult time scoring, both teams’ stars are not scoring easily in the 4th).
Yet both teams have the BEST COACHES IN THE NBA and these issues may very well be fixed come playoff time.
They are issues though, and even though they are one and two and ahead of their competition in terms of wins, I think the playing field has been evened out pretty quickly due to these new flaws in their teams. A first round upset, while unlikely, is entirely possible now.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

Ah yes, and the Lakers have already won more games this season than they did all of last season. That said, do I think they’re going to win it all? No. Did I think they were going to win at all until a late-season stumble against a team fighting for their playoff lives? No. But THAT said, it’s a bit too early to start throwing dirt on them.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

the spurs will win the west.the spurs will win the west.the spurs will win the west.

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

You know I wouldn’t mind having Kirk Hinrich on the knicks. I’m not even going touch the Laker conversation… except to say a team has to be pretty good for people to consistently look for chinks in their armor just to have something to say about them.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

The losses magnify the weakness of both teams : laissez-faire attitude, poor defense and inconsistent bench for the lakers, injuries and lack of athleticism for the spurs. they’re still the two best teams in the west but they’re vulnerable. and peaking around playoff time is usually a good thing, wouldn’t you agree, russ? the cavs are peaking whilst their three serious rivals (sorry orlando) are not. i don’t think it’s nothing.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Russ: So… when can we throw dirt? In the NBA Finals? I mean, it’s like ten games away from the playoffs. This is when teams should be rock solid.
I know the Spurs have a history of exploding in the playoffs, but they have never looked this bad in quite a while.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

bryan, the lakers are good. i think we can all agree on that. i just don’t think you win championships with that kind of defense and a ‘we’ll play fo real when it matters’ attitude. could be wrong, tho.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Well……the Pistons played that way for the last few seasons and they had really GOOD D and we saw where that got them. Sorry TAD.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

Yes, peaking around playoff time is a good thing. But when did the Celtics peak last year, IN the Finals? They lost three of their first six to the freaking HAWKS (sorry Co Co) in the first round. Did they look like champs then? Sorry that I have a little more faith in the Spurs and Lakers as reliable playoff powers than I do in, say, the Rockets or Nuggets or Blazers. Everyone wants to dismiss the old and welcome the new, but in the end it’s usually the experienced who come through. I’ll go on believing in Pop and Jax in late April and May, thanks.

  • http://www.realcavsfans.com Anton

BET: regarding our bet (no pun intended lolol), assuming you win – do I praise the Cats for the finals series? When we made our wager I thought the Cats would make the 8th seed and I’d cheer/troll for them then.

  • The Seed

Lakers lost ok, still the best team in the West, the Bobjordancats match up well with the lakers, just like the blazers and rockets. I fear the blazers and rockets, more than new orleans and spurs. Great game out of wallace, but come on, the bobcats will not make the playoffs in the least, but good win bobjordancats. Lakers will be in championships and for everyone on the Spurs bandwagon, its over, the wagon has past.

I thought Sideshow would make a good Ronald.

  • http://double-technical.blogspot.com Zee!

Kobe jawing, looking over at MJ after making tough shots was entertainment in itself. Regardless if the Lakers won or not. Phil needs to just sit Kobe, Pau and Lamar the last 2-3 games of the season, be content with homecourt throughout the west, and accept that the cavs will finish the season with the overall best record in the L.

Obama should release the Gitmo prisoners and fill it with Laker fans. Maybe there they can live in their alternate reality of Bynum being a hall of famer, 24 recording more than 1 assist per game, and Odom being clutch.

“The Lakers wont have trouble getting to the finals”

I wouldn’t be sure about that. Spurs could give them trouble, the Hornets – if healthy – could give them trouble, Jazz would not be an easy out, etc.

This may not be the west’s strongest year of the past several, but its *still* stacked. Just look at the southwest division – the 4th place team has 44 wins right now.

  • The Seed

You can’t sit Kobe, Lakers still can have a better record than the Celtics or Magic, if they make the Finals. Lakers would have homecourt.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

i can see the spurs losing in the first round, not likely but i wouldnt be that shocked. the lakers on the hand will dismantle the mavs. because… they’re the mavs. i don’t think they want to see utah that early though. deron williams giggles like a schoolgirl everytime he thinks about farmar checking in to guard him. jordan farmar basically can’t play against utah. he played 26 mins per in last year’s playoffs…. 13 per against utah. i love basketball-ref.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Who watched the Sactown-New Orleans game? David West killing it for 40 points and 9 boards on one leg and then the Phoenix hitting the game-winning three… it doesn’t matter if it was against the worst team in the league, that was an amazing game.

i’m failing to see what calipari has done wrong. this prolly deserves its own post. isn’t inevitable that a coach leaving at the end of a season will put the next recruiting class in limbo? i mean, he couldn’t have known that uk would be this terrible and that they would offer him a job in april when he recruited those guys. what would you guys have done? it’s uk and a hefty pay raise + a chance to stick it to his mentor. can you really refuse that job?

The Lakers would only have the upper hand against one of the top East teams if they didn’t have home court. Obviously Orlando. Oh wait…..WAIT!!!!! The Magic won both REGULAR SEASON games against the Lakers……..scratch that! See how that argument plays when the shoes on the other foot?

  • The Seed

Zee! the Lakers need homecourt to win the championship, plus if the big 3 don’t play, that’s alot of losses in a row for the lakers, then Magic and C’s withoud KG could overtake them. That’s why people saying Kobe has better talent around him is dumb, Fisher is old, Lamar is inconsistent, Ariza only plays D, Gasol is softer than Lamar and the bench sucks. I am a Laker fan, but homecourt is needed, because I see the Cavs getting put out, and all the Lebron hype goes away and we are calling Lebron-Lebrick and Lebronze again.

  • http://neworleansbasketball.blogspot.com Caleb

While Jukai keeps trying to convince himself that the Spurs are “Dunzo” I’ll just sit back and wait for the playoffs to come. And to answer Eboy, Yes Pop is f.uking with everyone’s heads. He has been all season. Randomly benching Tony Tim and Manu (usually against other playoff teams in the West) I remember there was that game aginst the Nuggs on NBA TV where he benched everyone and I’m pretty sure he did that agsint the Rockets recently as well. I can’t say that I think the Spurs will win it all, but we’re still very dangerous. I can’t really explain how difficult it is to beat us four times. Jukai should actually already understand that very well.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

ciolk……I kind of thought that too…..I mean if you listen to everyone else in the country, there are no other teams in the West…..so why bother playing hard and putting your full squad in place until the playoffs? Pop would be the one guy I could see pulling off that type of move.

  • http://vnsny.org Spaceship Jay

Have you noticed how no one has answered your Suns question Pve84? That’s how insignificant they are at this point. D.Williams dismantiling Nash in the closing seconds of that game was VISCOUS, by the way.

  • http://double-technical.blogspot.com Zee!

Seed, that’s all possible, but also think about the road the Lakers have to go thru to get to the finals it’s ok, but hardly tough. And once they get in familiar territory think of how they are going to realize: “Hey this is where we were last year” and proceed to get it the F together. I guess this lends more towards me believing that the Cavs will make it to the finals this year. Stranger things have happened. Like a Boston-Lakers series last season. I’m not saying Sternbot can pull strings, but I just can’t see the Cavs and Lakers not facing off in June.

  • Jackie Moon

So are the Celtics going to beat the Cavs in the playoffs, that’s what I want to know.

  • https://twitter.com/TheDiesel Anton

    No, Jackie. No.

  • The Seed

Zee!, understood, but your point hinges on Cavs making it. I feel the Lakers would beat Cavs without homecourt too, because Lebron would go crazy trying to prove he is better than Kobe. Plus Kobe would be very hyped for this matchup.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Let’s see…….a banged up Celts squad…..without home court advantage…..against a much improved Cavs squad….with home court…..who forced 7 games against the Celts much stronger team last season? Yeah, I think the Cavs will be swept.

As a guy that would love to see Kobe win one without Shaq, I really feel like the Spurs could beat the Lakers in a 7 game series as of now. The Lakers just don’t seem like they’re ready for the playoffs to me. That, and Pop usually lets games go for the playoffs. He’s been doing that for a long time. The Spurs will be ready, elderly players and all. What year haven’t they been ready?

When Utah can win a road game against a playoff team, San Antonio has it’s core players healthy, New Orleans starts playing over their heads again like last year then maybe I’ll believe the Lakers have a legit reason to worry going into the playoffs. • http://neworleansbasketball.blogspot.com Caleb

Spurs efficiency differentials (Points per 100 possessions minus points allowed per 100 possessions)
    08-09: 4.2
    07-08: 5.4
    06-07: 9.3
    05-06: 7.7
    04-05: 8.7
    03-04: 8.1
    02-03: 5.9
    01-02: 6.8
    00-01: 8.6
    99-00: 6.4
    98-99: 9.0
    97-98: 4.4
    96-97: -9.0

So yeah whoever said that this was the weakest spurs team in quite a while was actually correct. Weakest since the 20-62 1997 spurs, but obviously much much better than that team.

So yeah.. based on efficiency statistics… the Spurs are weaker this year than they have been in a while. So whoever said that was right.

My point in my comment earlier was that it just gets a little redundant. Everytime the lakers lose its “they’re not championship caliber” everytime they win by anything less than 10 points its the same thing. Everyday its Kobe lost a step, their defense sucks their bench sucks they can’t win. And the proof of that is what? They’ve lost what 14 games this year? And when they do blow someone out its expected. We are supposed to read so much into an april loss to the bobcats who don’t mean sh*t to the lakers but we can’t read anything into the lakers being the only team to beating the cavs on their home floor? Or beating the celtics and every other team in the league. It all means NOTHING because they lost to the f*cking bobcats and exposed all their flaws. Right.

LEBRON IS THE BEST PLAYER IN THE LEAGUE HIS PER IS THE HIGHEST SINCE MJ’S 1987-88 SEASON.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Jackie: Well, I think the Celtics have cause for concern, but it’s not the same as the Lakers. In fairness, the Celtics MAIN MOST VALUBLE PLAYER, Kevin Garnett, has been out. Ray Allen has also been out. Paul Pierce is exausted. The Magic are fully healthy, and it may be better to just sit the Celtics Big Three and give up home court advantage. Of course, the other big problem the Celtics have is that they’ve lost homecourt advantage, which was pretty much the key to every single one of their wins last year.
More to that, they have rotation problems, Doc Rivers has clear favorites and I think sometimes that hurts the team in total. They also lost two proven, playoff-clutch players from last year, and that really, REALLY hurts them.
Yet I think the Celtics are better off MENTALLY because they can say “let’s let Kevin rest, and once he comes back at full strength we’ll just be like we were in the beginning of the season!”
For the Lakers, well, there are some mental blocks there. Farmar, Fisher, and Walton have all digressed, and they had to change their entire style of play with Bynum gone, and now will have to change it back with Bynum back. They also look like they’ve lost some fire, although I’m downplaying this “loss of fire” because they’re probably just way too anxious for the playoffs and are not taking games seriously. Still, their bench HAS to be fired up in someway, and the Bynum situation has to be dealt with flawlessly, because when the season began, the Lakers were viewed not just by us, but by every other western conference team as unbeatable. Now every team in the league will be gunning for them as the Lakers look entirely too human.
But that’s just my humble opinion. LEBRICK SUCKS.

  • http://double-technical.blogspot.com Zee!

T.R.O.Y. on a Wednesday morning, thank you pandora.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Of course, I have this crazy theory that the bench is purposefully sucking to show the world that Kobe actually has a worse team than the Cavaliers so he can get the MVP for a second time in a row.
    Crazy?
Bout as crazy as Pops making the Spurs lose on purpose.

  • Jackie Moon

I don’t think the Lakers are unbeatable, never did. Just because a team is highly favored does not make them invincible. None of the teams are, I see vulnerabilities in all of the top teams starting with the Celtics, the Spurs, the Cavs, the Magic. The Lakers are probably coming out of the West, that’s about all I’m confident in. I also know that Kobe is pretty dang good in the initial rounds of the playoffs, and it’s not “magic”, it’s called “precedent”. The Celtics defense did a great job on the Lakers last year, but if you look at the stats, which I reluctantly do, you will see that Kobe and Lebron’s stats were very similar in their series against Boston.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

So KG has a bad back, he’s played something like 1,500 games in his career, he’s 33 years old, he’s been out for something like a month now, and it’s just a given that when the playoffs start he’ll be back at full strength and raring to go? OK.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

KG better get more than 3 regular season games under his belt…..Doc’s going to wind up f*cking himself with that over precautionary sh*t.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

Russ. Back? Is this on top of his knee hurting?

  • https://twitter.com/TheDiesel Anton

Big Baby in the 4th quarter in the playoffs…I love it.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

Tim Duncan misses a couple of games and he’s getting old and breaking down. Kevin Garnett misses a third of February, two-thirds of March, and who knows how much of April, and he’s just resting up for the playoffs when everything’ll be just like old times. I get it. (KG’s only played something like 1,200 NBA games in his career—I apologize.)

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

Dark: Back, knee, same difference. Maybe I’m confusing my geriatric players. My bad. Heck, I don’t even remember the last time I saw the Celtics.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Did Russ read what I said?
Why do I even ask that, of course he didn’t…
I said it’s easier for everyone on the Celtics to prep themselves up for the playoffs by saying “HEY WHEN KG COMES BACK, THINGS’LL GO BACK TO NORMAL!”
I don’t think KG is going to be 100% for the playoffs. I think Duncan will be healthier than Garnett in the playoffs. Isn’t Duncan older than KG? Or is that just my impression of how they play?

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

Yes, I read what you wrote. Do you really believe the Celtics are thinking that? Or do you think its more likely they’re wondering whether he’ll be the same player? And that at this point it’s starting to look like “if” rather than “when”? Your mindreading abilities must be beyond mine. My GUESS is that they’re at least somewhat worried that KG won’t be “normal” until next fall, if ever. CAPS LOCK

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

I was talking about the Celtics, not you. Do you truly believe the Celtics are saying to themselves “when KG comes back, we’ll be fine”? You seriously think the Celtics—who are in third in the East, are missing their best player, and will have to beat the Cavs in Cleveland at least once just to GET to the Finals—are in better shape heading into the playoffs than the Lakers? I’m just trying to figure out what your point is.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Russ……if you’d allow me to interject…..I think Doc has it in his mind that KG will be back…..terrorizing the paint like he could on two good wheels. I think KG probably thinks he’ll come right back in and do that too. You and me and others know that won’t happen without some cohesion with the rest of the squad (which now has two brand new contributiors from the bech in Moore and Steph)……similar to LA if (when) Bynum comes back. Those two things can be the downfall of both of them if the transistion isn’t smooth for either.

  • Jackie Moon

DID YOU SEE LEBRICK AND THE CAVS PUT UP A WEBSITE TO TRY TO CONVINCE EVERYONE HES THE MVP?? SOMETHING ABOUT HOW HES REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY GOOD COMPLETE WITH QUOTES BY JOHN HOLLINGER WHICH PROVE HE IS HAVING THE BEST SEASON EVAR?

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

You know, I went back to my previous comment a little concerned that I had typed something I didn’t want to, and looked for where I said the Celtics are in better shape heading intot he playoffs than the Lakers. I must be selectively blind, because I can’t find it.
Russ, my point was, it’s easier to assure yourself that you will get out of your rut once your main player comes back from what Doc Rivers and the Celtics management keep reporting (I know, they’re probably downplayign it) as a minor injury than trying to get yourself out of a rut when your team isn’t any different from the team that wasn’t losing any games a month ago.
Said less complicatedly, what’s easier to think, “Hey, once KG comes back on the court, we’ll be better than we are now!” compared to “Hey, once we fix whatever the reason are bench has stopped scoring and get Kobe to start passing to his teammates again, we’ll be better than we are now!”
Take time to answer, no need to rush.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Also Russ, incase you’re waiting for me to say it, I think the Lakers are in better shape for the playoffs than the Celtics because the Celtics have lost homecourt advantage in the second round, and that’s going to hurt them more than most teams in the L

  • Jackie Moon

No, it’s easier to think “hey we’ll get it going once the playoff start, because we will be more focused and intense as the stakes have been raised”. That’s probably the easiest mentality to have.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

I more or less entirely disagree, how’s that?

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Jackie: I think EVERY TEAM says that.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

Although your 2:17 makes more sense. But if KG has to try and play himself into shape in the first round, not having home-court advantage in the second may not even come into play.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Russ: Entirely fine. You write magazine articles for basketball publications. I wear slacks and go around messing with people’s computers. People can choose who to believe in this situation (me, of course).

Yo to the other 1 or 2 Cavs fans: If Bynum comes back (assuming the transition is smooth and assuming Ben is healthy), do you think we should start Z and Joe Smith? Considering we got more r@ped than a white girl in Colorado last time in the paint, I think we should. It’s pretty much a 5-on-4 if Wallace starts on the offensive end and Smith has great defense himself. A bit of a slap to the face of Ben, but can’t argue with results.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

I’m still wondering exactly how big L.A.’s problems are. They’re still 58-16, right? And the last time they won as many as 58 games was 2002, when they won their last title. Their point differential is virtually identical to last year, when they made it to the Finals. I went and saw them in Jersey the other night, and while Kobe had a bad shooting night (and sprained his ankle, to boot), Pau Gasol made Brook Lopez look like Brooke Astor and they still won fairly easily. Yes, fine, they lost to the Bobcats last night, but they also beat the Cavs in Cleveland and the Celtics in Boston (in consecutive games, no less) this year. As for Bynum, didn’t they make it to the Finals without him last year? I’m just not sure what all the fuss is about. They didn’t win 70 games so they suck?

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

To the Lakers credit they did START the season looking like world beaters, playing intense defense like a bunch of you pointed out. But again, they’re very very beatable and if you out hustle them and play intelligently they’re pretty fragile collectively, especially defensively.

LeBron just bought out the Cavs.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

The Lakers are like the hottest chick at school that loves to fu*k……but she has a constant yeast infection that you can’t see but once you open things up….it becomes quite apparent and then the luster comes of the rose. Meaning? They can be as great as they want to be during the regular season and throughout the West playoffs, if they get through. Anyone corny enough to think Lebron (if the Cavs make it) won’t be pedastaled 5 degrees higher than D-Wade in the Finals and have all the chips fall on the Cavs side from refs calls are either dense or don’t pay attention to the history of the game…..either or.

But I’m honestly not going to try and look that stuff up. So, Russ wins.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

So even if the Lakers make it to the Finals they still suck, and LeBron will get a billion more calls than anyone else in the Finals even if he happens to be matching up against Kobe. OK.

LeBron can record a triple double in a cunt, he’s got all around disease game.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

Hmm. One bad loss doesn’t mean the Lakers suck (nor the Spurs for that matter). But they look vulnerable. Yet, with Boston injured and the Cavaliers very capable of sporadic mediocrity, the title’s up for grabs right now.

And I’ll bet all those Laker numbers WERE better in the first half of the season. They were 34-8 at the midway point, and have been 24-8 since. Yet they still managed to beat the Cavs in Cleveland and the Celtics in Boston in February. Without Bynum. I’m not even a Laker fan, so I have no idea why I’m even looking stuff up. It’s just weird to me that anyone who even remotely believes the Lakers could win it all are delusional sheep when they still have the second-best record in the League.

I’m surprised that Russ thinks Kobe will get a fair shake in a potential 7 game series with Bron. That’s about the only thing I’ve taken issue with with all of Russ’s comments. Russ….you are aware of Lebron’s ability to get to the cup? Of course you do. You also know Bean isn’t as keen to mae that his game anymore too? You do. So you think a pretty solid Cavs D is going to just let Bean come into the lane at will and do what he’d like? We all know how that sh*t worked out last season against another strong TEAM based D. Lebron will not be shut down by Trevor Ariza in that setting…..mark that sh*t down today.

  • https://twitter.com/TheDiesel Anton

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

If the Lakers play the Cavs in the Finals, Kobe will get his share of calls, that’s all I’m saying. Or do you think he’ll be too scared to drive on Anderson Varejao and the corpse of Ben Wallace? It won’t be Wade/Dirk, that’s for sure. If the Cavs win the title this year—which is a strong possibility—it won’t be because of the officiating.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

Haha TAD. But not til I’ve played notes on the “suck trumpet” myself. Look back exactly one year ago at the Slamonline message boards, at yahoo sports and ESPN and SI.com and all the great sources of NBA news. They Lakers looked just as good as they were today, they had a great record, they destroyed most teams (but had a few bad losses too). And everyone (me included) honestly thought they were a lock to win it all. Deja vu, anyone? This is the SAME Laker team. Sans Bynum, doing the same things, scoring lots and wowing casual and hardcore fans alike from LA to Beijing. They are a very good team and of course they don’t suck, but they don’t have what it takes to win it all.

  • http://neworleansbasketball.blogspot.com Caleb

@Russ. Rasual is the man. Hornets fans have dubbed him the Phoenix.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

If the Lakers and Cavs DO meet in the Finals, it’s gonna sound like a Monica Seles match out there. They’ll be able to assign blind refs.

    @Eboy. Okay, two bad losses.

I hate the Lakers, I really do – but they still have a good shot in the Finals. To think otherwise is silly.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

I don’t think Pop is trying to lose. he just doesn’t really care about winning every regular season game. And there definitely is some psychological effect for teams who may have beaten the Spurs but didn’t have to see Manu, Tim, and Tony. Also, the injuries are very much real.=, and they have given Popp some added incentive to rest guys. Not to mention trying to develop George Hill and see if Mason can handle running the point in pressure situations. This has just been a more pronounced version of the same ol’ Spurs who have had their focus on the playoffs all season. But I do think their have been some game theory isht going on with Popp when it comes to benching all of out top players against The Nuggs instead of the Grizz.

  • http://neworleansbasketball.blogspot.com Caleb

I don’t know.. the fact that the Spurs posting an efficiency differential that’s lower than it has been in OVER a decade tells me something, yet… it’s still a very good efficiency differential.

Well, I can’t speak for everyone, but I’d be almost as happy with elimanting the Lakers as actually winning the chip. I think it depends on that old “window of oportunity” teams like the Spurs and Celts HAVE TO win it all for the season to be a success. But I think Portland, Denver, Atlanta, Miami would all be rather pleased with getting to then second round, and the teams like Orlando and Houston should be pleased with a trip to the conference finals…

Bah… every year there’s only what, 5 teams? that have a realistic shot at winning the title. Five at the most. So of course its not a “complete failure” for every team that doesn’t win one. He gave the Suns 50+ wins and the most entertaining team in basketball season after season, but he didn’t win the chip so it wasn’t enough. Nonsense.

Sure… but thats the problem, that so many fans have no patience and no perspective.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Eboy: Yeah, especially when the referees and the mob keep you on the fringe until you trade for #$*)#ing Shaq.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Sorry BET….I’m still holding out hope the CATS get the last spot…..just so MJ can suit up in place of Sean May.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

But, BUT, if you think about it, the Shaq trade worked: It turned the Suns from a fringe Finals contender into not a contender at all! Kerr is a genius!

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

Jukai @ 3:29 is the contrapostive of a good opinion

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

See Caleb…..I told you Jukai would let us know what it’s like.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

Perceptions and preconceptions are a funny thing, that’s all.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

I’d rather be on the fringe like the Pistons have been since 2004 then this jekyll and hyde crap they are trotting out to me this year. That is all.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

And Rasual Butler needs an MVP vote.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

With the notion of Jukai’s 3:31 comment, I suppose I owe Dumars a gift.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Russ: Does Lang owe you a favor?

  • http://neworleansbasketball.blogspot.com Caleb

Now you are making sense Russ.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Maybe it’s team cultures that drive expectations instead.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

    Not that much of one.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

    Pity.

  • http://double-technical.blogspot.com Zee!

MVP vote? Most valuable Phoenix right russ?

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

    @Zee! Whatever it takes.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

    this thing is now d.e.a.d

  • Jackie Moon

    I want some apologies!

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

And still no sign of James the Balla…..coincidence?

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

Eboy: he commented on kick of the day, insulting Lebron, cleverly calling him “Lebrick”. That guy makes me wish i were 5 again too.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

    Ahhh….

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

delonte kicking the ball is just another example of refs giving in to lebron and cavs. that should be a tech whether the game is over or not. also, lebron elbowed herrmann and sheed in the face with no call. actually, they called sheed for the foul. its getting insane.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

but in reality, James is attending a paideia seminar on how to talk like a p0rn star. He will be back here tommorow, if you notice any “ohhhh yeah”‘s or “go harder harder”‘s at the end of his comments, that is his investment paying off.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

Tarzan: Because Kobe elbowing Gerald Wallace in the face (while Gerald was in a ‘legal’ defensive position) and not getting anything called is not another example of the refs ATTEMPTING to give the game to Kobe and Co. To bad it didnt work, because they got outplayed last night, and swept in the season series. Im just repeating those facts in case you didnt know.

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

i didnt see the game so i didnt see that. gerald knows about it tho, he was there when kobe did the same to doug christie. just standing there, pow! elbow to the nose, blocking foul. in game 7 of 02 wcf, in the 4th qtr alone, lakers shot 27 free throws!!! 27!!! in the last qtr!!!! the nba is a great league but sometimes the refs and ones controlling the refs ruin it all.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

i see your point on the cavs getting calls though. I am just sick of people seeing it as a one sided battle. 3/8 of Wade’s blocks are not actually ‘blocks’ and they are really ‘extremly hard fouls’. And if Kobe doesnt reach in and suffer from watching too much ‘Elbows Gone Wild Spring Break Edition’ then my real name is Susan. Star treatment is nothing new, remember that Wilt Chamberlain never fouled out of a game.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

What good does a tech do after the make is over? People do what Lonte did all the time after close wins.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

    make = game

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

I used to like Rasual Butler, but then he stopped making threes for like two weeks so I had to drop his ass for Wilson Chandler. I’m guessing there’s something besides hoops that makes Russ like him so much.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

I just like blue collar guys who stick around a long time and play semi-important roles on decent teams. Rasual’s sort of like a next-generation Aaron McKie, at least in my head. I don’t think he has any sort of misconceptions about who he is and what he’s there to do.

  • Jackie Moon

Anthony “Oldhead” Johnson is one of the best in that category, Russ.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

    I dig AJ, too.

Will “White Chocolate” be back next season?

  • Sarah

Concerning the Spurs, Pop is definitely messing with the rotation. But it’s basically as simple as this: you live by the 3, you die by the 3. I haven’t been comfortable with our reliance on outside shooting all year, but we’ve had to compromise with injuries to our best facilitators. The last few games, Matty Bonner, Ime Udoka and Roger Mason Jr. haven’t hit shots. Finn has tried, and honestly Manu has been pretty good save for his 1 for 7 performance on his first game back in Atlanta. I’m hoping these last few games will cure all the chemistry/shooting ails we have before playoffs. But, then again, I’m an incurable optimist and never a realist — if I can help it.
