Breaking: Skip and DFish Suspended

by Ryne Nelson

The NBA has suspended Derek Fisher and Rafer Alston for their roles in separate incidents last night. The Lakers and the Magic will be without starting point guards in Game 3 tomorrow.

Fisher has been suspended for bowling over “My Friend from Argentina!” Luis Scola. Fisher was thrown from the game with a Flagrant Two. Alston has been suspended for swinging at Eddie House’s head. House was hit with a technical foul for elbowing Alston in his stomach. Both incidents occurred in the final minute of the third quarter.

Oh, let’s not overlook this little note at the bottom of the press release:

Jackson also announced that the Lakers’ Kobe Bryant has been assessed a Flagrant Foul Penalty One for elbowing Houston’s Ron Artest in the chest area with 6:57 remaining in the fourth period of Wednesday night’s game.

Yes, Kobe has been dealt a flagrant one for this ‘bow to Artest’s chest (which lead to Ron Ron’s demonstative ejection). Both Artest and Bryant will play in Game 3.

I’m an MJ-hater from way back, but I don’t recall him ever being as cheap as Kobe. MJ played on the fringe of the rules (traveling, fouls that became blocked-shots and steals, jersey-tugging, unsportsmanlike jabbering, complaining to the refs, offensive fouls to create separation or draw a foul call the other way, etcetera). The thing that separates Kobe’s behavior is that he acts with impunity. It’s almost like he had a few drinks with Stern one night, and the Commissioner told him that he was a made man. He must KNOW he’s untouchable. It’s the only way to explain the smugness he exhibits when he flouts the rules. Sadly, Rondo seems to be moving in the same direction. Does Stern have syphilis? How is it that he is unable to see that he is moving the league in a dangerous direction?

Dear Stu, you are now officially insane. Sincerely, me.

I’d prefer that Fisher wasn’t suspended personally. His trouble guarding Brooks this series has been a major benefactor in the rockets being competitive. Now Farmar and Brown will get more minutes, but even so, they loose experience, and a crunch time player.
I guess I’m just stating both sides here actually… gargh.

i miss the old times, when the chief took down laimbeer with several punches in from of everybody’s eyes and played the next game…2day the league overreacts, not the players.

  • stokesey

First off, with kobe, Artest had his left arm over kobe’s shoulder (hence the foul on artest) when they were boxing out, and when they were jostling for position, kobe was fighting back trying to get position, kobe hit Artest in the chest (in my view, but who am i too argue) it was a “basketball play” ie: Boxing out, so no suspension, the Fisher an Skip plays werent “basketball plays” hence the suspension to both players i believe (although i dont agree with either suspensions, neither play was dangerous, or someone got hurt just chippy playoff incidents)

    Meh.

I’m a celtics fan and think that suspending Alston is a joke,it might at the most have warranted a fine but no way a suspension.

Stu Jackson needs to be fired. Seriously.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

No, I’m serious. This is ruining basketball for me. I’m not even joking. Why watch anything but the Cavaliers games?

Check the vids and pics online…Artest was pushing on Kobe’s head and neck with his forearm when battling for position during the boxout. Kobe retaliated with an elbow to Ron’s CHEST.

Hell, Kobe has elbowed his own teammates before on the bench (Sasha). No excuse but the mamba elbows are at least as deadly and untamed as Mutumbo’s. If Mount Mutumbo could play in the league for 35 years swinging those things around, I don’t see how you can suspend Kobe. I mean, it’s not like he Barkleyed some poor 100lb man on one leg. He planted an elbow into the CHEST of Ron Artest, a man who, according to rumor, cracked Michael Jordan’s ribs during some skirmish during a pickup game one summer during his comeback attempt with the Wizard’s. So please, let’s stop with the overconcern for Ron Ron. He doesn’t need to be protected from Kobe. He needs to protected from himself.

As for Fisher and Scola, check out the replays and watch Scola. When he falls down, he is grabbing his face. Fisher didn’t hit him in the face. That’s pretty clear proof to me that he was “exaggerating” for effect (flopper!). Next game, I want to see Sasha step on his foot and watch Scola fall down as if someone just removed his family jewels.

And don’t let him fool you. Stu Jackson was using BrickBreaker on his Blackberry to make his decision…he wasn’t emailing anyone. “Little brick go bye bye. One game for Fisher. Long skinny brick stay. Rondo can play Game 7″.

Seriously, how does Stu Jackson still have a job? Are you really telling me that there is no one else out there who couldn’t do a better job?

  • vtrobot

@ Russ, I know that you didn’t say “punch” that’s why I said “people” had said it. I didn’t want to take the time to go back and find out exactly who had said it. I respect your opinions and many of those on here. Debate is a great part of life. It will be funny if these suspensions actually help the teams with the suspended players (I see LA potentially benefitting more than ORL). Can someone help the Hawks? How many people are going to dress on Saturday? 4?

Forget my Cavaliers comment. Apparently the last game was badly officiated too. Sigh.

Weird thing is that KMart’s foul on Dirk was the only one that got penalized with cash (25,000) and his was possibly the weakest of the bunch.

Rondo must have naked pictures of Stern and Stu Jackson…

  • ngoiekafita

I bet Rando went all cat with boots (big eyes) on David Stern.
But Whoa!!! D Fish!!! President of the player accosiation? Daaaaaaaamn!!!
Never thought he had it in him, closeline poor scola!

  • ngoiekafita

Oops, puss with boots and association ^^

Couple things I noticed. Kobe’s elbow was a final resort type reaction to the sheer strength with which Ron moved in to get better position. see 1.11 in video) Ron is a beast. Kobe is a genius for still getting the rebound. I love this series. Whatever the NBA got wrong before with Rondo, they got right with the final verdicts in this incident.

  • Ganchan

wsp, the reason Scola was grabbing his face is the same reason Fishers head was bleeding after the play, ie his head his Scola’s mouth/teeth. I agree that Scola is a flopper but he was clearly owned by Fish on that play.

  • wsp

@Ganchan, you are right. I forgot about that.

Which begs the question, why wasn’t Scola suspended for going all Mike Tyson on Fisher’s head?

I saw the super slow-mo’s. There is clearly pre-meditation on Scola’s part…as Fisher hits him with the forearm, Scola brushes, flosses, uses some mouthwash and then chomps down on Fisher’s head (Scola’s a quick cat).

Stu, you might want to check it out… It’s not too late to make things right.
