Florida’s Calathes Chooses Europe

Well, we can officially remove Calathes’ name from the SLAMonline Mock Draft board. The former Gator point guard will play for Euroleague champs, Panathinaikos, earning $1.1 million with a car and a house: “With his Greek heritage and dual citizenship, Calathes figures to be a popular figure in Athens. In addition to joining arguably the world’s most elite overseas franchise, there should be endorsement opportunities aplenty, and the built-in honor to represent his country in international competition. Last summer, he played for the Greek National Team during the FIBA Europe Under-20 championships.”

Eh, this sucks, I sorta thought this kid was underrated and he coulda been a steal in the later rounds.

    Peace out

Its probably a smart move for him though, his game fits better there. Bigger, but slower points have had a lot of success over the years in Euro leagues.

this kid is indeed underrated and he made a wize move to be coached at this early stage of his career from on of the best coaches in the history of the game(and certainly the best in Europe for the last 15 years)…unfortunatelly Kostas (Koufos) wasn’t that smart and he lost a year(along with lots of dollars), trying to make it in Utah…the hated Panathinaikos (who ridiculized us once again last night with a 30 point win,.. Josh was again mediocre)will have next year crazy depth in the guard position with Kalathes being their 6th best guard…. 1)Diamantidis, 2)Spanoulis 3)Jasikevicious 4)Drew Nikolas 5)Milenko Tepic 6)Kalathes 7) Xatzivretas (the starting shooting guard for the Greek national team up until 2007 is averaging 5 minutes a game this year)

Bourousis, I’ve read that Jasikevicious probably won’t be back if they signed Calathes. His contract is really big and by signing Calathes, they will have more room in their rotation to play him behind Spanoulis-Diamantidis and give him more playing time (at a fraction of the cost of Saras).

Nice payday for him – more than what he would have made in the NBA. This doesn’t stop a NBA team from drafting him this year still though. They can draft him and keep him in Europe to develop (and not have to pay his salary).

  • Javale McGee

    Smart kid, that Calathes!

that’s where drew nicolas is? in greece? the same guy from maryland yeah?

  • http://www2.gsb.columbia.edu/faculty/jstiglitz/ YIANNIS BOUROUSIS

it will be a big mistake for Panathinaikos to let Saras leave even if he is indeed way past his prime, same mistake they did with Siskauskas 2 years ago(although he left by himself,Pana wanted him). There are only very few players in Europe left that can take the ball at the final minutes of big games with the confidence of Saras,Siskauskas and Navaro and Panathinaikos will propably pay for this (neither Spanoulis nor Diamantidis are killers in this mode although they have made big baskets in the past).

Hey, Spanny: What’s yer opinion on Ricky Rubio?

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Wise decision. Late 1st can often mean early second aka non guaranteed money. A cool mil after taxes, a car and a house. + he can still get drafted and come back in 1-2 years. AND he’S greek. What’s not to like?

  • http://www2.gsb.columbia.edu/faculty/jstiglitz/ YIANNIS BOUROUSIS

@Jukai….:if he doesn’t have injuries i think he will be the best player to come out of this draft…what i saw from him in the Olympic final was really impressive,to me he has the game(and the intelligence) of Magic but (unfortunatelly) not his size..i repeat, IF he doesn’t have injuries i think he is one of those guys that you build champion teams around.

  • http://www2.gsb.columbia.edu/faculty/jstiglitz/ YIANNIS BOUROUSIS

Drew Nicolas improvment on defence and general game after just one year under “grand master” Obradovic is amazing…the guy is propably ready for the NBA now…i wonder what would happen if a physical marvel like Jeremy Tayler (who was presented last week to the greek teams by Vacaro) had the brains to follow the instructions of Obradovic for 4 years…”K.G only better..???”

Now he’ll be near his bro, Pat, who plays in Europe.

Hay yiannis bourousis if you are the real man why don’t you try for the draft and the nba.Yiannis bourousis is one of the best centers in europe. He is 6’11 feet he is one of the best centers defender and he is tremendous at shot blocking.he has nice stroke, he can shoot great european threes. He must develop more his back to the basket game but he has great progress these lasts years.and the most important he is playing with his heart.Check his profile at draftexpress. He is the starter center of greece national team and olympiakos.

  • Josh D

This move really doesn’t make any sense to me, but i’m not complaining, another NBA standard player in Europe

Calathes skippin to the europe like B Jennings after high school is 1 thing ($$$) or whatever, but after college is a b*tch move. NBA is where its at…foreva

  • http://www2.gsb.columbia.edu/faculty/jstiglitz/ YIANNIS BOUROUSIS

aggnba89…:you are right on Bourousis but i don’t get it when he is not playing like a big man (last night he had his shot blocked by Jasikevicious..!!!!!??) and keep faking again and again….
@Josh D….: Koufos’ move is the one that didn’t make sense, Kalathes move was so easy, just check ciolkstars’s comment and the facts($$,home, cars, country) presented at the beggining…
    @weezy….:well,…nevermind.

  • http://www.myspace.com/weezyleezy337 weezy f. leezy

well..unless u have no shot at the nba..then yea go to europe

  • http://www.myspace.com/weezyleezy337 weezy f. leezy

hey i dunno..it is 2009 times are changing, just takes gettin used to. this was unheard of when i was comin up..nba was THE place to be. i feel like this is the civil rites movement..lol.. european basketball revolution..more power to him…(ricky rubio is still wack)

calathes would have been a 2nd round draft pick with no guarantee money. he made the right choice and took the money early

Wow!! All these cats like Oglesby and Calathe are going to start a one and done trend for Europe. Check out Courtcred.com. They did a video diary with Former IU PG Earl Calloway who is killing overseas. One thing I can say is the guard play overseas is pretty good.
