Sheed to retire?

SLAM contributor J. Gamble [making his debut with us next issue] hears from a close personal friend of Rasheed Wallace’s that unless Sheed gets $8 million to play next year, he’s going to retire. If that’s true, we’ve probably seen the last of Sheed in the NBA.

  • Fredd Posted: May.4 at 5:43 pm
if he wanted to get 8 million / 1 year, .. Maybe he should have scored a point in is last pistons game …. no way he gets that money … sad cos’ I ‘d love to see him bounce back in another contenter team ….

  • B. Long Posted: May.4 at 5:56 pm
He’s been pretty much retired for the last couple of years now. No big suprise.

  • Anton Posted: May.4 at 6:06 pm
The whole Pistons team should retire after that beatdown.

  • Mendel Posted: May.4 at 6:08 pm
Agree with Anton and Blong. Sheed is done no matter how it goes. I feel, not sure though he would be good on TNT.

  • Mo Charlo Posted: May.4 at 6:10 pm
Maybe he’ll take a paycut to come play with the Spurs.

  • finest hour Posted: May.4 at 6:17 pm
Spurs are aging they wont sign sheed who wayyyy past his prime and pay him 8 mil.

Makes sense to me. Like BLong said, dude has basically been retired for the last couple seasons anyway. He’s definitely not getting 8 mill though.

Oh my Gawd! The end of Sheed makin it real. Disgusting. Pay the man $$$ and give him a clown suit at least. He is simply the most quotable playa in the L.

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: May.4 at 7:14 pm
And, for the record, I’d rather see the Bulls give Sheed $8 million than Ben Gordon $10 million.

  • Prison Mike Posted: May.4 at 7:42 pm
He’s already got a championship. He’s only motivated by money now and once the contract is signed, not motivated at all.

  • Moose Posted: May.4 at 8:07 pm
    Awwwwww.

  • Witness Posted: May.4 at 8:11 pm
I love Sheed. Pay that man 8 mill.

  • no id Posted: May.4 at 8:24 pm
Getting 8 mil in this economy and with so many teams losing money?…not gonna happen.

  • thedimemachine Posted: May.4 at 8:54 pm
    Say it ain’t so.

  • Dacre Posted: May.4 at 9:44 pm

Sheed is still worth $8M/year to a contender, trust me. From a +/- standpoint, he was still the Pistons best player this year. His defense is solid against the premier true Centers in the league… Howard for example. On offense, you just have to accept that he’s going to shoot a lot of 3’s, but at a decent percentage. His post moves are still effective, but doesn’t draw contact anymore.

  • dma Posted: May.5 at 1:12 am
‘Sheed and the city of Portland need to kiss and make up. He would be the perfect backup PF the Blazers need - aggressive, good on D, hit the open 20 footer. But then again….

  • starbury&stevey Posted: May.5 at 6:06 am
    dma@aggressive????,and what about channing frye??

  • Big Marv Posted: May.5 at 7:27 am
Sheed can’t retire, go back to Portland I like that, but not the SPurs, please not the Spurs.

  • TDP Posted: May.5 at 7:30 am
Unfortunately for Sheed, the ‘ball don’t lie.’

  • rav Posted: May.5 at 7:47 am
$8m????? seriously????? no wonder there are so many teams who have money problems right now

  • TADOne Posted: May.5 at 8:15 am
1 year and $8 mil for a veteran PF/C with the resume of Sheed is really that much of a stretch. However, with his up and down play of this past season, i’m not entirely sure he would get it.

  • Jukai Posted: May.5 at 9:13 am
I’ll give him 20 bucks to mow my lawn. That’s his worth. You guys are insane, saying he’s worth eight million. Maybe eight million over sixteen years.

  • Eboy Posted: May.5 at 9:17 am
SLAM has come to “a friend of friend of a friend” rumor reporting spot? C’mon now.

    [...] Rasheed to Retire? [...]

  • Tavoris Posted: May.5 at 9:36 am
I agree Russ…Sheed will make a fantastic coach tho…and I’m sure a team will snatch him up immediately 4 an assistant position

  • Gerard Himself Posted: May.5 at 9:53 am
Tavoris: what?! Sheed would make a fantastic coach? bahahahahahahahahahahahahah…..hahahahah ha
    ha

  • Tavoris Posted: May.5 at 9:56 am
Gerard, for all of Sheed’s passiveness on offense, he clearly has been one of the better defenders of the past decade. He also always gets praise from his coaches/teammates regarding his basketball IQ.

  • Tavoris Posted: May.5 at 10:01 am
If you watch a Piston’s game, Rasheed has practically been their defensive coach since he’s been there. He’s always talking, always making sure players are in position.

  • Marco Posted: May.5 at 10:02 am
    sad day

  • Tavoris Posted: May.5 at 10:04 am
Jukai, is that really that much of a stretch, considering Lafrentz’s expiring contract was about 13.5 mil?

  • Marco Posted: May.5 at 10:05 am
He played demotivated because understood from day 1 of last season that the Pistons had 0 chanche of winning the ship. I think that he could be a difference maker for one of the real top team

  • Marco Posted: May.5 at 10:08 am
Maybe not 8 millions but the midlevel would be fair, Jukai

  • Tavoris Posted: May.5 at 10:09 am
I agree Marco. His defensive range ALONE makes him a difference-maker. I got lots of respect for Sheed, as he was the ONLY player who could (and did) guard Duncan 1 on 1 in their primes. Detroit went from a good defensive team to a great defensive team once he got there. He explodes in emotion on the court, but every coach he’s ever had raves about how coachable he is.

  • sheedfan Posted: May.5 at 10:10 am
w/a new team,he can still bring it. Somebody please.

  • ShellShock Posted: May.5 at 10:42 am
If he is smart he would just take the mid-level exception with a player option for next year if it is offerred. That way he gets paid for the season and can have the try of getting some more cash next year if he does well.

  • Bob dole Posted: May.5 at 11:08 am
Here’s a different spin - why not the Magic if they do in fact lose Turk. Could be a nice true power forward option alongside Dwight, and allow Rashard to finally move to his real position at SF. Line up could be: Howard
    Sheed
    Lewis
    C. Lee
Nelson Looks good to me, and money could fit (turk currently makes near 7 mil, we could get sheed for that amount I’d think or maybe less) Although I don’t think it’ll happen, but fun to talk about

  • Jukai Posted: May.5 at 11:26 am
Actually, Bob Dole is… really really really spot on =/

  • Allenp Posted: May.5 at 11:34 am
He actually retired two seasons ago.

  • Zee! Posted: May.5 at 11:36 am
Maybe Powerade could sponsor him. Hook it up SLAM.

  • Tavoris Posted: May.5 at 11:36 am
Bob Dole…Sheed would LOVE to play alongside a true C…That would easily be the best defensive frontcourt in the L with Sheed and Dwight.

  • Tavoris Posted: May.5 at 11:37 am
Zee, that Powerade ad is gettin on my damn nerves today…WTF r u thinking Slamonline?

  • Julian Harry Posted: May.5 at 12:11 pm
THIS IS TEH FIRST TIME I A M HEARING THIS BUT IT BELIEVEBALE. BUT THE QUESTION IS WHY HE NOT TAKE LESS MONEY TO STILL PLAY ON A WINNER ? HE MUST NOT WANT TO PLAY BALL AT ALL ANYMORE.IT HASN’T LOOKED LIKE HE BEEN WANTIN TO PLAY BALL ANYWAY THE PAST FEW YEARS.

  • Tavoris Posted: May.5 at 12:34 pm
Julian…we’re all speculating on a rumor. Sheed has never even been the type of dude that’ll make selfish demands.

  • kevin Posted: May.5 at 12:41 pm
i love sheed i’m from philly if he retires fine
long as nike keep making those air force 1 high sheeds i’ll be ok

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: May.5 at 1:26 pm
A thoroughly disinterested Sheed would help the Spurs more than a fully engaged Drew Gooden (if there even is such a thing) or Fabricio Oberto.

  • Peter Treadwell Posted: May.5 at 1:29 pm
Good riddens throw that over paid thug out on his tail and don’t allow him in the hall of fame even as a vistor !!!!

  • Tavoris Posted: May.5 at 1:50 pm
Russ, the Spurs fans (myself) can only dream of Duncan and Sheed in the frontcourt. Who would score on those 2?

  • albie1kenobi Posted: May.5 at 1:50 pm
wow, really Russ? you think so? i was just sad at the prospect that we won’t hear gems like “both teams played hard” anymore. he should get traded back to ATL so Dumars can say, thanks for the lease.

  • Jeff Posted: May.5 at 2:02 pm
Sheed retiring? never been a happier moment than when he left Portland and took all of his bullcrap and trouble with him. Worked out great for the blazers as well. Sheed is a cancer- glad he got his ring- now he needs to retire to his little pot farm where ever that maybe and let the game return to players the NBA are proud to put out of front for the public- and trust me sheed is one of them! He will not be missed!

  • Tavoris Posted: May.5 at 2:17 pm
Jeff….trust that Sheed will definitely be coaching as soon as he retires. The trailblazers may have been glad 2 get rid of him (altho they were only four minutes away from a Finals appearance with him), but he won’t be gone from the game.

  • TADOne Posted: May.5 at 2:27 pm
Peter Treadwell: Um, thug? Really?? Rasheed is definitely outspoken on the court, but off the court he is a married family man with multiple kids from his wife of many years and is very invested in the communities in the cities he has played in as well as the Philly community he grew up in. Know what you are saying before speaking.

  • Tarzan Cooper Posted: May.5 at 2:53 pm

  • Tavoris Posted: May.5 at 3:09 pm
ditto…we get so caught up in placing expectations on people, that we don’t even notice what they ARE DOING. Sheed played defense at the 4 as well as ANYONE ever has (his rotations ARE as good as KG, and he plays physical defense as well as Duncan). I know the stats don’t tell the story, but Sheed is pretty much universally respected by players and coaches alike.

  • Spaceship Jay Posted: May.5 at 3:42 pm
I’d love to see a pay like you play league.

  • Tavoris Posted: May.5 at 4:10 pm
    lol @ Spaceship…

  • wayno Posted: May.5 at 4:26 pm
I love the guy, but I’ll be happy when he’s gone from Detroit. He needs to go to a veteran team or a team with a good coach to be successful. He was out of control this season because he didn’t have any kind of accountability. He’s deffinitly a good player still.

  • Brian Posted: May.5 at 4:45 pm
Wasn’t this Portland’s first year making the playoffs since Sheed left? Not sure how that turned out great for them.

  • Michael Tillery Posted: May.5 at 4:51 pm

Rasheed Wallace is without a doubt one of the most talented big men to ever step onto a professional basketball court. As I have watched him over the years I have been amazed at times at how beautiful he can make the game of basketball, but I have seen the ugly side too . There is no doubt in my mind that he has alot of good he could still bring to the game, however with his age and uncontrollable emotion, the time has passed for anyone to ever see the best that Rasheed Wallace could have brought to the game of basketball. Sad as it is when so many others have strived so hard to be the best in the game, but never had the ability to have reached that goal, but Sheed had it all right there within his reach and chose to settle. We may never know the reason he chose to stand in the background, the limelight isn’t for everyone . As for myself I would like to thank the big man for a glimpse of glory.
