Sheed to retire?

SLAM contributor J. Gamble [making his debut with us next issue] hears from a close personal friend of Rasheed Wallace’s that unless Sheed gets $8 million to play next year, he’s going to retire. If that’s true, we’ve probably seen the last of Sheed in the NBA.

if he wanted to get 8 million / 1 year, .. Maybe he should have scored a point in is last pistons game …. no way he gets that money … sad cos’ I ‘d love to see him bounce back in another contenter team ….

He’s been pretty much retired for the last couple of years now. No big suprise.

  • http://www.twitter.com/TheDiesel Anton

The whole Pistons team should retire after that beatdown.

  • http://allanzuss@yahoo.com Mendel

Agree with Anton and Blong. Sheed is done no matter how it goes. I feel, not sure though he would be good on TNT.

  • http://theghostofroyhobbs.blogspot.com Mo Charlo

Maybe he’ll take a paycut to come play with the Spurs.

  • finest hour

Spurs are aging they wont sign sheed who wayyyy past his prime and pay him 8 mil.

Makes sense to me. Like BLong said, dude has basically been retired for the last couple seasons anyway. He’s definitely not getting 8 mill though.

Oh my Gawd! The end of Sheed makin it real. Disgusting. Pay the man $$$ and give him a clown suit at least. He is simply the most quotable playa in the L.

And, for the record, I’d rather see the Bulls give Sheed $8 million than Ben Gordon $10 million.

  • Prison Mike

He’s already got a championship. He’s only motivated by money now and once the contract is signed, not motivated at all.

    Awwwwww.

  • http://blogs.myspace.com/originadro Witness

I love Sheed. Pay that man 8 mill.

  • no id

Getting 8 mil in this economy and with so many teams losing money?…not gonna happen.

  • http://thedimemachine.multiply.com thedimemachine

    Say it ain’t so.

Ironically this is just his way of finishing things on his terms.

“both teams played hard my man”.

Sheed is still worth $8M/year to a contender, trust me. From a +/- standpoint, he was still the Pistons best player this year. His defense is solid against the premier true Centers in the league… Howard for example. On offense, you just have to accept that he’s going to shoot a lot of 3′s, but at a decent percentage. His post moves are still effective, but doesn’t draw contact anymore.

‘Sheed and the city of Portland need to kiss and make up. He would be the perfect backup PF the Blazers need – aggressive, good on D, hit the open 20 footer. But then again….

  • starbury&stevey

    dma@aggressive????,and what about channing frye??

  • Big Marv

Sheed can’t retire, go back to Portland I like that, but not the SPurs, please not the Spurs.

  • TDP

Unfortunately for Sheed, the ‘ball don’t lie.’

  • rav

$8m????? seriously????? no wonder there are so many teams who have money problems right now

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

1 year and $8 mil for a veteran PF/C with the resume of Sheed is really that much of a stretch. However, with his up and down play of this past season, i’m not entirely sure he would get it.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

I’ll give him 20 bucks to mow my lawn. That’s his worth. You guys are insane, saying he’s worth eight million. Maybe eight million over sixteen years.

SLAM has come to “a friend of friend of a friend” rumor reporting spot? C’mon now.

I agree Russ…Sheed will make a fantastic coach tho…and I’m sure a team will snatch him up immediately 4 an assistant position

  • http://www.another48minutes.blogspot.com Gerard Himself

Tavoris: what?! Sheed would make a fantastic coach? bahahahahahahahahahahahahah…..hahahahah

    ha
    ha

  • Tavoris

Gerard, for all of Sheed’s passiveness on offense, he clearly has been one of the better defenders of the past decade. He also always gets praise from his coaches/teammates regarding his basketball IQ.

  • Tavoris

If you watch a Piston’s game, Rasheed has practically been their defensive coach since he’s been there. He’s always talking, always making sure players are in position.

  • Marco

    sad day

  • Tavoris

Jukai, is that really that much of a stretch, considering Lafrentz’s expiring contract was about 13.5 mil?

  • Marco

He played demotivated because understood from day 1 of last season that the Pistons had 0 chanche of winning the ship. I think that he could be a difference maker for one of the real top team

  • Marco

Maybe not 8 millions but the midlevel would be fair, Jukai

  • Tavoris

I agree Marco. His defensive range ALONE makes him a difference-maker. I got lots of respect for Sheed, as he was the ONLY player who could (and did) guard Duncan 1 on 1 in their primes. Detroit went from a good defensive team to a great defensive team once he got there. He explodes in emotion on the court, but every coach he’s ever had raves about how coachable he is.

  • sheedfan

w/a new team,he can still bring it. Somebody please.

  • ShellShock

If he is smart he would just take the mid-level exception with a player option for next year if it is offerred. That way he gets paid for the season and can have the try of getting some more cash next year if he does well.

  • Bob dole

Here’s a different spin – why not the Magic if they do in fact lose Turk. Could be a nice true power forward option alongside Dwight, and allow Rashard to finally move to his real position at SF. Line up could be:

    Howard
    Sheed
    Lewis
    C. Lee
    Nelson

Looks good to me, and money could fit (turk currently makes near 7 mil, we could get sheed for that amount I’d think or maybe less) Although I don’t think it’ll happen, but fun to talk about

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Actually, Bob Dole is… really really really spot on =/

  • http://effyou@heythere.com Allenp

He actually retired two seasons ago.

  • http://double-technical.blogspot.com Zee!

Maybe Powerade could sponsor him. Hook it up SLAM.

  • Tavoris

Bob Dole…Sheed would LOVE to play alongside a true C…That would easily be the best defensive frontcourt in the L with Sheed and Dwight.

  • Tavoris

Zee, that Powerade ad is gettin on my damn nerves today…WTF r u thinking Slamonline?

  • Julian Harry

THIS IS TEH FIRST TIME I A M HEARING THIS BUT IT BELIEVEBALE. BUT THE QUESTION IS WHY HE NOT TAKE LESS MONEY TO STILL PLAY ON A WINNER ? HE MUST NOT WANT TO PLAY BALL AT ALL ANYMORE.IT HASN’T LOOKED LIKE HE BEEN WANTIN TO PLAY BALL ANYWAY THE PAST FEW YEARS.

  • Tavoris

Julian…we’re all speculating on a rumor. Sheed has never even been the type of dude that’ll make selfish demands.
