SLAMonline Mock Draft: Brandon Jennings, No. 4

He is now officially ready to rock the NBA.

by Tzvi Twersky

With the fourth pick in the SLAMonline Mock Draft, the Sacramento Kings select…

Eddie Jordan. As the coach. But, for real,  Brandon Jennings is gonna look good in purple-and-black—well, as good as any man can look in those colors.brandondraft

Last time you saw the Kings play, Kenny Natt was coach, Geoff Petrie was in charge of player personnel and Beno Udrih was playing the point. Well, the Maloof brothers have come to their senses. First, they screwed over Bill Simmons and made me the first Internet writer-turned-GM. Then, no questions asked, they allowed me to hire my man, Eddie Jordan. Once he was entrenched as the coach—and the offense that the Nets used when they were good, and that the Wizards have been using was emplaced—I didn’t have to think too hard before settling on cover boy, Brandon Jennings.

Usually I don’t feel the need to justify my picks to the public, but this one time I’ll do it. So let’s analyze my reasoning.

First on my checklist was “team need”. Yes, I usually draft the best talent on the board, but in this case—with Blake and Rubio taken—I didn’t see one player who was far-and-away better than the rest. So I focused on the players that we already had inked.

Looking up and down the current roster, I felt that our bigs were set, with a few young prospects at those spots (Spencer Hawes and Jason Thompson). When it comes to the wings, we are also happy with what we have there—Kevin Martin, Donte Green and ’Ciso Garcia—and can’t afford to spend another pick, and more money, on that spot. Yes, I like Demar DeRozan, but not enough to draft him. He is not ready to contribute and I don’t feel like teaching him to play, only to lose him in a couple years to free agency.  As for James Harden, I liked him as a college frosh, but didn’t see his game progress as a sophomore. When you toss in his March Madness production, he fell down our board. Now, at the 1 spot, for some reason the previous group of decision makers decided to lock up Udrih long-term. But his game is so average it would fit in well with the D-League. No. He wasn’t gonna be my starter this year.

I thought about some of the PGs in the Draft. Stephen Curry didn’t even enter my mind; he’s a SG. Ty Lawson is real nice. And he’s also 5-10 and injury prone. When it came time to evaluate Jennings, I was skeptical. The kid’s a little short and didn’t put up good numbers this year in Europe. But after working him out, I decided I had to have him—you would have to, the kid didn’t miss a J, showed great speed, court vision and displayed the work ethic Eddie Jordan needs. I think he’ll be able to step in this year, play 30+ minutes a game and bring us back to respectability. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that he’s a little flashy—remember the cow-bells that Jason Williams had ringing here 10 years ago?

You want to know a little bit more of our scouting report on BJ, well here it is: A lefty, Jennings is quick and fast—and there is a difference there. Because of this, he has no trouble getting where he wants to on the court, be it the lane or the spot on defense. When it comes to handling the rock, ain’t no one better. His handles are as good as anyone out there. When you combine that with serious case of mad court-vision and a knack for the spectacular, SportsCenter should be his middle name. He does like to shoot, too, and even though he only shot 38 percent this year in Italy, he possesses a nice mid-range and long-range stroke. Oh, yeah, I almost forgot; Brandon has springs, and doesn’t mind bangin’ on bigs when they give him the lane. When you let him run with the ball, as Eddie will, watch out because the results are gonna be spectacular. I know I’m not mentioning his flaws, but when you put it all together, BJ is the best PG to call Cali home since Jason Kidd and Gary Payton. Hopefully, for him (and me), he has the kind of careers that those two had.

You know, we were looking forward to that first pick. Blake Griffin would have made Eddie Jordan look good. He would have made all of us look smart. But C-Dub (Chris Webber, the man who repped us at the lottery) couldn’t come through—nothing’s changed, I guess—and we ended up with the fourth pick. This is only the second time the franchise has picked in the top-five. The other time, in the one slot, we selected “Never Nervous” Pervis Ellison.  That makes me feel good because even if Jennings busts, he’ll never duplicate Ellison’s wasted career. And, just maybe, he’ll help keep the franchise in Sacramento.

    I like this pick.

  • C-Mac

if the kings don’t take jennings, they r out of sacto

  • james

this draft is gonna make memphis look stupid for drafting thabeet. he’l be a cross between marvin williams and kwame brown

  • Dionisio

Not going to help them turn it around. What else can you get at this point right? Hopefully he has character to lead (needed in a point guard especially).

  • Jakob Kagel

4 picks not much of a mock draft

  • http://hoopsmanifesto.blogspot.com/ Jeff Fox

My first reaction to this pick is that Jennings shouldn’t be picked this high. But once I thought about it more I can’t really point to any other player left on the board that I would definitely take over him.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Myles Brown

    Damnit…

  • AlbertBarr

This is a great pick…the Kings were just staying afloat when Bibby left…a kid like Jennings will help bring an identity back to Sacto…quick, handles, vision…I like.

  • The Handsome Baller

    Great pick!!!

Sacramento Kings Future – A 30 win Season at best!! They need to add afew more players, but Jennings is heading in the right direction.

    1. Brandon Jennings
    2. Kevin Martin
    3. Dante Green
    4. Jason Thompson
    5. Spencer Hawes

  • The Handsome Baller

I also hear that Sacramento is big on Jrue Holiday!

I’m a huge fan of Jennings because he has the following point guard skills.

    1. Athletic ( Fast, Quick, and can jump out of the damn gym)
    2. Pass (He can see the floor with excellent court vision)
    3. He has heart and passion for the game.

**** Last year at this time some of us thought that Brandon could be the #1 pick this year because of all his talents. He goes to Italy and because of the system, he dosen’t put up huge numbers, but there still better than Rubio’s and all of all sudden he drops on some major NBA Draft sites to around 10!!! Wow

jennings would be great for the kings

solid analysis. j-will of the future

Beno was the worst starting point guard in the league last year

  • http://fjdklsf.com Jukai

    hahahaha… uh…. Alright I guess… It works… I guess…

  • http://fjdklsf.com Jukai

The one thing I don’t like about this is the lack of justification for not picking Jordan Hill, who I think the Sacto Kings will eventually wind up picking. Yes, Thompson and Hawes are great players who will fill up the backcourt for years, but that’s also two players. They need another dude, one who is more of an offensive force, and Hill fits the bill.
Jennings actually makes a lot of sense though. So, can’t hate too much.

  • Stickz

Never Nervous was the 1st pick in the 89 draft, not the 2nd. Go wiz!

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Jordan Hill is not a basketball player yet.

  • Dionisio

The way Jordan Hill was playing during the tournament, you can see he’s not ready. He didn’t even want the ball in his hands and when it was, bad things happened. Why pick Jordan Hill if there’s even a small chance Jennings becomes a star? Jordan Hill is going to be a rich-man’s Mikki Moore.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

Beno Udrih should still be given heavy minutes off the bench. Brandon Jennings is better than Beno, but Beno is still a young player, and can very well develop into a star player. I like the tandem these 2 would have together, and if 1 gets injured, the other can step up. Eventually, this will lead the kings back to the playoffs.

Do your research before you criticize,, Jakob Kagel….

  • Teddy-the-Bear

NOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Knicks need Jennings, forget the Kings!!

  • Teddy-the-Bear

@ The Handsome Baller: I hear you. NBA draft rankings are ridiculous sometimes. I bet BJ Mullens is somewhere in the top 10… gross.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Tyler Hansborough is going to be top 20 probably… gross.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

jordan hill, bj mullens… those are guys that will impress people in workout shooting rythmn jumpers and dunking like crazy… until you realize that they’re not basketball players. athleticism is nice but it’s basketball, not tracks.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Tzvi Twersky

-Myles, I had a feeling this was the man you wanted.
-Jeff Fox, My thoughts exactly (as I tried to articulate).
-the next pick is where this mock will get really interesting.

  • LilKDub503

Can you guys trade picks? That would REALLY simulate the process. I’ll just wait and then bash you guys later. :-)

  • El Gee

love this article. disagree itll happen, but if GM’s were smart this is how it would go down!

  • http://www.myspace.com/weezyleezy337 weezy f. leezy

yea im ready to see what this kid got

  • Teddy-the-Bear

I think GM’s are going to actually pick Hansborough over Jennings… Just a gut feeling.

  • http://fjdklsf.com Jukai

Well, I’m not really sold on Jennnings being a basketball player yet either. Obviously, Jennings is going to be better than Hill, I’m just wondering what’s more valuable for the team. I think Udrich is valuable enough that you could wait out on Hill to develop.
Once again though, the article makes some good points, I can’t really say it/s wrong, just that I’d do things differently.

  • Quail

i hope jennings does a lil better in individual workouts than rubio. then rubio will go to sacramento and jennings to OKC.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

    Jennings > Rubio.

  • kwame

i heard they might take jrue holiday

  • Seven Duece

Man I’m glad y’all wrote this so i can send the link to my man Sam. He’s been saying Jennings is going to be a bust, but if you’ve ever seen him play you know that can’t be true. He dominated all comp in the states and was relegated to media oddity in Europe. However, they didn’t think twice about cutting him a 6 figure check, what’s that tell you? Now if only Phoenix could find a way to get him…

  • K

Teddy, I’m with you on Jennings for the Knicks – I am crossing my fingers. I know Curry’s generating interest because of the Lebron ties (which can’t hurt), but I just think with the humbling experience Jennings has had in Europe he’s going to come back to the states mature and just blow up in the NBA (let alone what he would do in the D’Antoni offense). Who’s going to be able to stay in front of him?

  • http://www.sprint.com/pre dma

anyone that thinks they’re “OK” with donte green should be shot. who the eff is donte green?

  • Jeff

I have seen Holiday and Jennings play alot over the last several years and Holiday is the glue guy.. He would be the guy I draft. way underrated ,was in the wrong system at UCLA to show his skill set.

  • Marco

    Jennings >Rubio = Wafer >Wade

  • ericmontross

Does this mean that Under Armour will finally release his shoe?

  • daniel

I’m really not convinced on Jennings. I think that he can potentially develop into a solid NBA player and maybe an All-Star, but right now he should definitely not be the 4th pick. He struggled last season in Italy, and what makes people think that will change in the NBA, which is an ALOT tougher league? The potential is there but there are alot of questions about him like his strength and his jumpshot, both of which will be tested immediately in the NBA.

    Rubio/Jennings

    The new CP3/Deron (rivals)?
