SLAMonline Mock Draft: Tyreke Evans, No. 9

This is the remix!

by Justin Walsh

With the ninth pick in the 2009 SLAMonline Mock Draft, the Toronto Raptors select… (Biz Markie voice) REMIX!

Stern: With the ninth pick of the 2009 NBA Draft, the Toronto Raptors select…

(Black Bush rushes the stage)

B. Bush: WOAH, WOAH, WOAH, Ladies ‘n Gentlemen… A change of flow is in order! Secretary of MOS DEFense will announce the pick. And now…

(The crowd looks shell-shocked. Didn’t this guy retire after a $50 million contract? He was the Allan Houston of jokes.)

Secretary of MOS DEFense: I’ll repeat it so you ain’t got to press rewind. The ninth pick be disguised as welcome signs. And the signs point to… TOO EASY! This ain’t yellow cake from the motherland, this ain’t aluminum tubes… This is Tyreke Evans.

That’s right residents of Toronto, rest easy, too easy in fact. We finally have that missing piece! As we speak, our season tickets are being sold out. As we speak, Chris Bosh is noticeably happier. He might not request a trade now. Can you imagine this starting five:

1: Jose Calderon
2: Tyreke Evans
3: Shawn Marion
4: Chris Bosh
5: Andrea Bargnani

Back to Tyreke Evans. Sure, like Knicks GM Russ Bengtson sTyreke Evansaid, “The kid’s only 19, and he couldn’t hit a perimeter shot if you paid him.” That much is true. But I’m drafting him to… What’s the term? “Here to f*ck shit up.” (Thanks Will Ferrell.) He’s going to be slashing to the hole every chance he gets. We’re going to run defenses ragged.

You remember when Tony Parker wasn’t allowed to shoot outside of 15 feet? That’s Tyreke Evans, only he’s 6-6, loves hurting your feelings and enjoys ruining ankles. I have to admit, he really doesn’t shoot a basketball very well, in fact it looks somewhat like an Olympic shot-putter. But did you see that game against Missouri in the NCAA Tournament? He exploited them. It was NBA Live ‘09 on rookie mode!

After careful review of the game footage we realized something: Let him cut all day long. It will allow the Raptors to compensate for Bosh being more of a high post guy. It will bring drive and dish threes for Calderon and Kapono. They can be a similar squad in player make up to Memphis and their high octane set up. Perfect fit.

On the other end, I have to admit I considered a few players for the position. Jonny Flynn, for one. I feel he has a chance to be a Stephon Marbury-esque player (the one we had such high hopes for in Georgia Tech, not the so-called pariah). But at the end of the day, we’re committed to Jose. We just can’t justify another PG. We just got rid of T.J. Ford a while back; we’re all high on Jose. How does it look if we draft yet another floor general? I also considered Earl Clark, the potential injected swingman. Then I looked into our team makeup. The styles don’t fit. We don’t need a SF/PF. We needed a slasher.

Tyreke is admittedly one-dimensional at the moment, but that’s what we need from him right now. His skill set will fit to the point that we can start him from day one. This fits with his philosophy, his mindset. Everything about this pick makes our squad a playoff team. With the right work ethic, we can push for 50 wins.

ESPN, cue up the hyperbole, praise and talks of a high motor! Team 10? You’re up. This was Too Easy.

He has a lot of upside.

  • Declan

Doesn’t he suck at not being a point guard though? Thats why he was so bad at the start of college. I like him but its too much like 76ers with Iggy at the 2, it just doesnt work.

  • Declan

Still, not a bad pick. He is going to be a good player.

  • Nate

Although I like the Grizzlies… I’m from Pittsburgh and love the PANTHERS which means I hate THABEET and as it looks he will likely get taken 2nd overall. Even if he’s on the Grizzlies I will never like THABEET. He looks like Nemo

  • AR

His shot mechanics are absolutely horrible, surely some coach somewhere along the way should have put that right. From watching him at Memphis,I’m not sure he’s athletic enough to be a truly dominant slasher in the NBA.Having said that,I think he’ll probably be a solid 15-20 guy

  • hitop

I agree Raptors need a slasher. He will bring a bit flair to the raptors, making them a worth team to watch.

  • http://slamonline.com B. Long

He didn’t show me enough at Memphis to go this high. I just don’t see it. He’s no Demar Derozan.

  • http://www.laumol.nl/weblog Laumol

A team that already has Marion wants another slasher with bad shot-mechanics? Since Kapono ain’t starting, this might make sense…

  • http://www.fanballers.com so fresh n so clean

love the pic. This is exactly what the raps needed, his handles are off the charts and he can get to the basket at will.

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

I think people underrate this guy a little.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

    I like this.

Dont sleep on on tyreke evans…

  • French Toast

Gerald Henderson would have fit very well in the raptors team too.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Justin Walsh

    B. Long, Demar wasnt available at pick 9. Tell me who I could have picked for better value! Tyreke is the best available mixed with best need for the team. Plus, black bush was involved.

Don’t go assuming that Marion will still be rocking the T Dot red and black in 2010. Chances are he’ll be long gone for warmer weather and the chance to ‘be the man’ of his team, thus he’ll probably end up in Europe, hah.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Justin Walsh

Marion could do the “be the man” but who else wants him? Nobody. I think he’s stuck in the T dot red and black. Oh, and French Toast, I feel Gerald Henderson would be a GREAT Pistons pick at 15.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Tyreke Evans > Demar Derozan. Let’s just put that out there.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Justin Walsh

Teddy-the-Bear: No. Let’s just retract that statement.

  • http://Slamonline Rocken53

Tyreke will suprise everyone. He will be better than anyone can imagine.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Justin, I don’t want ANY Dookies anywhere near the Pistons practice facility outside of Grant Hill. I’d much rather have Eric Maynor and move Stuckey to the 2.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Justin Walsh

Gerald is going to be the Dookie you want on the team. He’s not a Dookie far as I’m concerned from a skill standpoint.

  • http://Nicekicks.com MeloMan22

    YES YES YES

  • matt

Although he didn’t get a chance to shine because of collison, i’d say jrue holiday is the best out there. I’d take jrue over tyreke any day of the week, and since when have you been so hyped about tyreke justin? I remember when you hated him.

  • http://slamonline.com B. Long

The Derozan line was a joke, J, I’m not saying Tyreke won’t eventually develop into a decent shooter and above avg. player but he hasn’t shown me that next level athleticism that someone drafted strictly for being a slasher would need.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Justin Walsh

matt, I still am not hyped on Tyreke. I still think he can’t shoot. But Jrue Holiday is a PG. He’s a true PG. I don’t think the Raptors need a point guard. It’s the same reason I didn’t pick Flynn. And honestly, I think that when the actual NBA draft comes along, Jrue will go in the top 8 picks.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Justin Walsh

    B. Long, i don’t think he’ll ever be a shooter. But I think even Tyreke critics (myself extremely included, the world knows I don’t fawn over his game) have to admit that his ability to get to the hole and finish is unparalleled by any other person on this list at the 2 guard. Now, I admit that’s literally his only talent thus far.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

@ Justin… You picked Tyreke over Demar… Why retract my statement? lol

  • Teddy-the-Bear

To me, Demar is kind of overrated. Tyreke might be too, but in my opionion, he’s better.
His jumpshot is mad funky though.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

I would really like to know what you guys think of Eric Maynor? Apparently from reports, he has been killing in the pre draft camp in Chicago. I honestly feel he would be a steal in the upcoming draft as a mid 1st round pick. Sleep on the small school resume all you want.

  • Adam Sweeney

Nice pick, Justin. We’ve seen flashes of brilliance from Tyreke and in a Draft where there are so few certainties, he makes a lot of sense for a team that needs one more piece. Let him do his thing, even if it one thing well right now.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Also, I missed the first few of these. Are you guys doing just lottery teams or the whole 1st round?

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Kapono needs to leave the Raptors.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Justin Walsh

Teeddy, Demar was already drafted you goofball, I can’t draft Demar, he’s already off the board (smh). TAD, whole first round.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

If this draft goes anything like the history of my Raptors’ drafts… Okay I’ll stop there.
We don’t want Tyler Hansborough OR Chase Buddinger in Toronto, Mr. Colangelo!

  • Teddy-the-Bear

:O:O:O:O:O:O Sorry Justin! WOW. I completely missed that… How in the world?

  • http://slamonline.com/ Justin Walsh

haha, Teddy, if Demar was available I would have drafted him then chanted “nana nana boo boo.” Toronto fans love him, the press in Toronto loves him, Cats have made a facebook banner called “Demar to Toronto” with graphics and all. Yeah, that would have been textbook. Also, Colangelo aint the GM I AM! And there will be no Tyler H or Chase on my team (shakes head, gives stern look)

  • AR

I’ll guarantee that the actual Raptors will draft Austin Daye. And I’ll laugh.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Ah, point taken Justin. No Tyler H or Chase is a wise choice, no matter who else you pick!
I also don’t think Brandon Jennings is going to go so high. I have a feeling scouts are going to underrate him.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Justin Walsh

AR, actually I considered it momentarily, but I decided there was no way they drafted a 6’10 guy. Their frontcourt is already decided. Teddy, I think Brandon could either go real early (to the Kings) or at LATEST go 8th to the Kings.

  • http://slamonline.com B. Long

List of people who I’d draft for this role before Tyreke Evans: Gerald Henderson, Terrance Williams, Jack McClinton…yes, Jack McClinton.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Hmmm, whole 1st round you say? Did anyone get set with the Pistons pick at #15? And how come no one answered my Maynor question?

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

    McClinton is underrated.

  • http://slamonline.com B. Long

@Tad:Maynor will be a crackhead’s Chris Paul. Jack is butter.

  • http://slamonline.com B. Long

Jrue is this year’s Russell Westbrook.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

No f’in way. I’ve seen Maynor play live a few times. Small school or not the kid can play. Believe that.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Justin Walsh

    B. Long, Gerald doesn’t fit into my plans. Terrance you can get much later in the first round. Jack McClinton same deal. I love J McCl’s game. He can straight DRAIN from anywhere. But Toronto needs a slasher. I repeat- we need a slasher. TAD, Maynor is a solid player, he will be a good pro. His decision making, poise & shot selection is on level with anybody.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Justin Walsh

Jrue is this year’s R DUB. no lie. B. Long with the call of the year. He will be drafted very early, some guys won’t get it, then he’ll compete for ROY (finish in the top 4)

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Well, apparently no one doing this mock draft thinks Jrue will be drafted early.
