Is Robert Horry a Hall of Famer?

Big Shot Rob certainly seems to think so: “Does he think he’ll go to the Hall of Fame? ‘To be honest with you I don’t think so. I think I should be because I’ve done a lot of great things in basketball. A lot of people look at the scoring aspect of basketball, they don’t look at the other things like defense, winning; I think I’m one of the most winningest players in this game. I’m a specialist in that I go out and make a team better; I was a specialist in playing D, I was a specialist in getting the job done and being a great teammate. You look at all of the guys I’ve played with and you go down in the 4th quarter and ask who do you want in the 4th quarter, they want me.’ Who deserves to be in the Hall of Fame more: Dennis Rodman or Robert Horry? ‘I’ll take me.’”

i’ll take dennis rodman thank you very much.

  • niQ Posted: Jun.11 at 1:19 pm
and his forever changing haircolour to go with that.

  • dareuhl Posted: Jun.11 at 1:21 pm
Rings. He certainly did more then ride his pine to most of them.

  • Eboy Posted: Jun.11 at 1:22 pm
I’ll take Dennis and his 5 rings anyday, ever.

  • doyouwantmore Posted: Jun.11 at 1:22 pm
No way. Mercenaries don’t get a medal of honor. Greedy opportunist. (Actually I think Rob’s a good guy but as a Kings fan I have no choice)

  • Collin Posted: Jun.11 at 1:24 pm
YES, ROBERT HORRY IS A HALL OF FAMER!!!!!!!

  • Ciolkstar Posted: Jun.11 at 1:29 pm
I think Horry could be a HOFer but he doesn’t rate higher than Rodman. No way.

  • Jsoto Posted: Jun.11 at 1:32 pm
    F*ck Robert horry!!

  • Ken Posted: Jun.11 at 1:33 pm
Honestly, arguing that Horry should be in the HOF is like arguing that John Salley should be in the Hall. They were decent players who were role players on championship teams. That’s it. Horry couldn’t carry Rodman’s bridal garter.

  • neaorin Posted: Jun.11 at 1:36 pm
Role players should not be Hall of Famers. That is all.

  • Blaze Posted: Jun.11 at 1:52 pm
I agree with neaorin. James Posey and steve kerr have also been lucky enough to be at the right place at the right time, a few times. None of these guys are even all-stars.

  • Mendel Posted: Jun.11 at 2:03 pm
BOTH!!! But if I had to choose Rodman.

  • Ben Osborne Posted: Jun.11 at 3:07 pm
    No.

  • rainman10 Posted: Jun.11 at 3:13 pm
come on. Rodman has the individual hardware to back it up. And Dennis is a top 50 player of all-time. Just ask SLAM.

  • TADOne Posted: Jun.11 at 3:38 pm
    No.

  • littleshotlarry Posted: Jun.11 at 3:48 pm
Well, come on. Dennis over Horry of f-ing course, but I think he should be in too.

  • Blaze Posted: Jun.11 at 3:53 pm
    Shawn Klump eh, Kemp?

  • Clark Kent Posted: Jun.11 at 4:09 pm
Not a Hall of Famer. Rodman is though.

  • Michael NZ Posted: Jun.11 at 4:41 pm
    Rodman yes, Horry no.

  • Z Posted: Jun.11 at 4:50 pm
Oh, hell naw! The HOF is no place for rotation dudes, no matter the success that they might have had. Dennis played HUGE roles on his championship teams and was the best rebounder and one of the premier defenders of his era. His baskebtall IQ was also off the charts. I like you Rob, but I’m giving you the stiff arm on this one. ACCESS DENIED

  • Blaze Posted: Jun.11 at 5:06 pm
    mitch richmond!

  • John Blackk Posted: Jun.11 at 5:51 pm
Yes…Robert Horry should be in the hall of FAME. His widespread reputation was gained because he has won the NBA title 7 times!!! Another reason is because we have seen him hit incredible shots during the playoffs in his career. In case you cant remember why he is FAME-ous, it’s because he has the most 3-pointers made in NBA FINALS HISTORY. Yes…more than some guys named Michael Jordan or Larry Bird. I use these names because they are Hall of Famers and have spent a lot of time in the playoffs. He is only second to Reggie Miller in 3-pointers made in playoff history! Those are a few reasons why he should be enshrined in basketball’s Hall of FAME. It is called FAME because he is known for something in particular. The Hall of Fame is not only reserved for the highest point scorers we have ever seen. Horry and Rodman should have their stories re-told to all current and future NBA fans. Ya feel me?

  • Tarzan Cooper Posted: Jun.11 at 6:42 pm
so if horry isnt getting in, we better go back and kick out all those celtics “role players” from the 60s

  • Young Chris MP3 Posted: Jun.11 at 6:49 pm
    Rodman all day, every day.

  • neaorin Posted: Jun.11 at 6:50 pm
Yes, thirty years from now I’ll be telling my grandkids about the time I saw Robert Horry play. Or about Steve Kerr - only the deadliest three point shooter in NBA history, and five-time NBA champion.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Jun.11 at 7:02 pm
YES, he should be. I’m sorry, a role player that saves the @sses of Kobe and Shaq, bringing them to another title and basically solidifying those two guys’ status’s as all-time greats, shouldn’t get in himself?
So YES, Bigshot should be in. BUT, not before Mark the Magician, Bernard King, and Dennis Rodman get theirs first.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Jun.11 at 7:10 pm
    I heard that, John Blackk.

  • Blaze Posted: Jun.11 at 7:29 pm
Horry reminds me of AC Green, but with a jumpshot.

  • rainman10 Posted: Jun.11 at 8:02 pm
He should be in the hockey hall of fame for that hip check on Nash.

  • jessdogg Posted: Jun.11 at 8:39 pm
you cant forget that horry was the starting PF for his first 2 rings. but horry over rodman? are you kidding me?

  • chintao Posted: Jun.11 at 10:28 pm
    Tarzan Cooper said it.

  • Matt Posted: Jun.11 at 11:06 pm
Big Shot goes to the HOF so does Rodman. Horry did was not just a roll player. Half or more of the teams rings don’t come without him. His clutch D and late season late game heroics helped move finalists to champions. Ask his teammates how much he meant to their championships. 7 rings! Comon? PS. I hate him, that Nash check was total BS and the leagues gifting of the series was pathetic. But I have to give him his due.

  • TDP Posted: Jun.11 at 11:47 pm
If there were a NBA Finals Hall of Fame, then yes. Otherwise, hell no. Also, I still hate the man because of this.

  • MeloMan22 Posted: Jun.12 at 12:46 am
I would have said Horry deserves it…until he said he’d take himself over Rodman.

  • neaorin Posted: Jun.12 at 12:59 am
Better get DFish in there as well.

  • cletus Posted: Jun.12 at 1:40 am
Robert Horry will only have bragging rights about his rings. Before Horry, Michael Cooper will be elected 100 times over. No all-star appearances, all-defensive or sixth-man awards…be for real. George Gervin has no NBA titles, but Steve Kerr is on his level? Moses Malone has 1 ring, Bill Wennington has 3…so what? Did Horry lead his college team to a championship? Has he even been considered for an Olympic team? Coached any NCAA champs? The day when Robert Horry is inducted into the basketball hof(as if he was on equal footing as Dr.J), is the day that the place should be bulldozed.

  • Hursty Posted: Jun.12 at 6:50 am
I guess so. But that means guys like Fisher, Paxon, Mitch Richmond, Antoine Walker have to be considered.
Nahhh, I’m just f*cking with you re. Toine. But the others still stand.
BUT, if you wanted an offensive PF you take Rob. Defense you have Dennis. Depends on who has the ball at the end of the game doesn’t it…?
Rodman gets my ‘vote’ though, if I HAD to choose one only.

  • rikson Posted: Jun.12 at 9:56 am
I cant believe you guys take rodman over horry! Horry is clearly a more fundamental player - and dont forget how many teams horry played with and always made the rotation (or better) -> rodman just found his spot in chicago!

  • rikson Posted: Jun.12 at 9:57 am
Paxton or Ritchmond - cmon people. Dont forget that Horry also won titles in his prime…

  • rikson Posted: Jun.12 at 9:58 am
Richmond ? Walker ? Cmon people, they didnt win a title in their prime… Thats just not a fair comparison!

  • rikson Posted: Jun.12 at 9:59 am
    sorry for the double-post…

  • larrylegend Posted: Jun.12 at 10:57 am
both should go to the hall. don’t forget 2005 finals game 5…

  • cletus Posted: Jun.12 at 11:42 am
Go to the HOF website. To date, they have allowed only 285 individuals to be honored. I guess next there will be a campaign to induct John Salley(4 rings) next to Kareem, Wilt, Moses, and Hakeem. Rodman may be admitted because along with his 5 rings, he showed some kind of consistency throughout his career. To date, every individual who has earned league MVP honors has been inducted. That is done for a reason. Did anyone ever develop a gameplan to stop Horry? No, and no coach in his right mind would do so. He deserves credit for hitting some clutch shots—-AND NOTHING ELSE!
As I stated before, Horry cannot and will not be inducted before a player like Michael Cooper of the 80’s Lakers. Bill Laimbeer, JoJo White,
Paul Westphal, Bernard King, Artis Gilmore, & Dennis Johnson, among others will get voted in long before Horry would even be considered. Go to the HOF website and see for yourself. It ain’t that easy………

  • rikson Posted: Jun.12 at 11:46 am
I think Horry won 6 rings - is that right? Was Horry not consistent through his career?
No way Rodman should be in if Horry doesnt…

  • cletus Posted: Jun.12 at 12:26 pm

    ——————————————-
Horry was ableto win those rings because of the talent that surrounded him. Don’t fool yourself. He hit a lot of his shots because those other folks were being double and triple teamed…and he deserves credit for that—but his career is in no way HOF worthy. If you put him with, for example, the Clippers(as a starter/centerpiece), can he even lead them to the playoffs? Is Horry on the level of James Worthy? How do you feel about a player like Bernard King who singlehandedly drags a team(while he’s nursing his broken and sprained fingers) as far as he can thru the playoffs, scoring 34.8 ppg? Consistency means putting up your numbers from Game 1 of the regular season and playoffs, not JUST shining in the playoffs. Why do you think players like Reggie Miller, Barkley, Stockton, Ewing, Dantley, Wilkins, David Thompson, Baylor, Thurmond, Maravich, Gervin, Karl Malone, English, Bing, etc. are inducted? Let me inform you….IT AIN’T JUST ABOUT RINGS!

    penny hardaway!

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Jun.12 at 4:27 pm
Great point, cletus. I agree, Bernard King was the man for my Knicks. He needs to get his due before they even THINK about Robert Horry.

  • Randy Brown Posted: Jun.12 at 6:42 pm
It’s demented to even think Horry should be HOF. Yes, it was impressive that he could play 8 minutes a game and still hit the game-winning shot. But Hall of Fame players don’t play 8 minutes a game

  • scorp99cam Posted: Jun.12 at 10:23 pm
Please tell me how you tell the NBA story from 1996-2007 without mentioning Robert Horry? That is why he should be included.

  • Anton Posted: Jun.13 at 12:18 am
    Rodman > Horry

  • cletus Posted: Jun.13 at 12:52 am
When I think of the years from 1996-2007, the first names that pop up in my mind are all-nba’ers like Allen, Billups, Bryant, Carter, Duncan, Ginobili, Howard, James, O’Neal, Garnett, Iverson, Kidd, McGrady, Nash, Nowitzki, C.Paul, Pierce, Wade, D.Williams, Yao, etc….people who actually bothered to show up and play EVERY night….both regular season and playoffs.

  • baba Posted: Jun.13 at 8:08 am
I don’t think Houston, LA and San Antonio could have won those titles without Horry! San Antonio could have won another one if he played Horry more. He wasn’t just a clutch shooter or a role player, he is a great player PERIOD and he deserves to be in HOF!!!

  • vic21 Posted: Jun.13 at 12:50 pm
    HEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLL NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!

  • Tariq Al Haydar Posted: Jun.13 at 12:54 pm
Why are you people mentioning Mitch Richmond in the conversation? Richmond wasn’t a role player. He was part of Run TMC for God’s sake. Mitch was sadly stranded on an awful Kings team for most of is career. He has nothing to do with any of this.

  • Tariq Al Haydar Posted: Jun.13 at 12:57 pm
I read Rodman’s awful book “Rebound” when I was a teenager (I think). He kept mentioning how “anyone can score” but that he took it as a challenge to do other stuff. Yeah, well, Dennis, apparently, not EVERYONE can score. I’d still put him in the HOF, though.

  • Tariq Al Haydar Posted: Jun.13 at 1:04 pm
As for Horry, my buddy the Ant seems to think he’s a HOFer. I disagree. I don’t think you should get in if you average 0.3 ppg 0.4 rpg and 0.9 apg for your career. Or something. Horry brings into focus other, more philosophical questions, like: “Do dogs get to go to heaven?” Horry is that lovable Labrador that wants to get into People Heaven. Sadly, he can’t, no matter how many little boys he’s saved from the well or b*tches in heat he’s impregnated. Sigh.

  • scorp99cam Posted: Jun.13 at 1:23 pm
@cletus; I guess stats are all that matters. When I take my kid to the HOF I guarantee I will not be telling them about Tracy McGrady, I will tell them about the incredible moments Horry gave to the league. To me that’s what the HOF is for, not just those guys who accumulated stats on bad teams. Vince Carter is only in because of his dunks, because that is all I will tell my kid about.

  • Tariq Al Haydar Posted: Jun.13 at 1:32 pm
    scorp:
Vince and TMac shouldn’t be in either, in my opinion. I mean, listen, I’ve defended McGrady on numerous occasions, but the guy just hasn’t had a HOF career. HOF TALENT, maybe, but you shouldn’t get in if you haven’t won ANYTHING. Not a SINGLE playoff series. I’m sorry. And as for Vince? Meh.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Jun.13 at 3:44 pm
@ Tariq: T-Mac has elevated his game EVERY playoffs series he’s been in. To say that not winning was his fault is absurd. Not to mention the fact that he’s top 5 ALL TIME in career playoff points per game. Also, your dog example made no sense whatsoever.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Jun.13 at 3:47 pm
Okay first of all: Bernard King, John Starks, Dennis Rodman, Mark Jackson, and many others all deserve HOF inductions before Horry is even CONSIDERED.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Jun.13 at 3:49 pm
I’d actually take a full-time presence like Charles Oakley or Anthony Mason in their primes over a 1 stop show-up from Robert Horry. I’m kind of changing my mind now…

  • cletus Posted: Jun.13 at 3:57 pm
Scorp—–google Michael Cooper from the Lakers and explain to me why Horry would be inducted before him. Furthermore, he also has 2 WNBA coaching championships(may or may not matter). I also forgot about Mitch Richmond and Carmelo Anthony on my previous post.

  • Tariq Al Haydar Posted: Jun.13 at 4:32 pm
Teddy the Bear: It was a joke. I was saying that Horry is like a dog that wants to go to people heaven. He’s a role player who wants to go to the HOF. It ain’t happening.

  • Tariq Al Haydar Posted: Jun.13 at 4:40 pm
re:TMAC: I love the guy. And I’ve defended him. I never said that not winning was his fault. But, to me, it is equally absurd to enshrine a guy who has never won a playoff series. Never won a ring? Fine, here’s your bust. But a series? Come on now. At least give me a SERIES.

  • Tariq Al Haydar Posted: Jun.13 at 5:15 pm
Teddy: Don’t tell me that TMAC is Top 5 all-time in Career Playoff PPG. Please. You know how many playoff games Tracy McGrady has EVER played in? EVER? 38. In his ENTIRE career.

  • Tariq Al Haydar Posted: Jun.13 at 5:21 pm
So I wouldn’t attach too much value to that stat.

  • AZ Posted: Jun.13 at 8:20 pm
lol @ horry. might as well put in derrick fisher and brent barry too

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Jun.13 at 8:23 pm
@ Tariq: Alright, but you’re wrong about one thing: T-Mac was on the Rockets this year when they beat the Blazers! HA! =P

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Jun.13 at 8:23 pm
I still don’t like that dog joke, though. Don’t discriminate against the pooches!

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Jun.13 at 8:26 pm
Anyways, how in the world can Bernard King NOT be in the HOF by now? That dude was insane. I repeat: Him, John Starks, Mark Jackson, Dennis Rodman, and even Michael Cooper deserve to be in the Hall of Fame ahead of Horry.

  • scorp99cam Posted: Jun.14 at 3:43 am
I don’t understand how because someone deserving like Bernard King or Michael Cooper is not in the hall of fame we should eliminate Horry. Slam already had an article aout how the HOF was a joke for not including these players but also for having a million foreign coaches that no one cares about. If you think the HOF is about stats, then I disagree it is about stories and legends. Bernard king has way too many stories about him to not be in the HOF, Coopers defense is legendary, Horry’s clutch shots are just as legendary to me. Equating Fisher and Brent Barry to Horry is ridiculous.

  • cletus Posted: Jun.14 at 9:55 am
Horry is eliminated because as a body of work, his NBA career is simply not HOF worthy. In this day and time, an inductee has to have been an all-star, been on ALL-NBA or all-defensive teams, have scoring, rebounding, assist, or blocked shot numbers. An NBA player has to have shown that he was able to have put up numbers(not just rings or playoff/Finals 3-pointers) over a period of time. Had Horry chosen to show up at all during the regular season, he would no doubt be a 1st ballot inductee. As I stated before, there are less than 300 members of the HOF. It was a shame that it took years for both Dantley and D.Wilkins to be inducted. Do a wikipedia search on Dennis Johnson–he is another player whose NBA career is far more HOF-worthy than Horry’s……..

  • canadiandestroyer Posted: Jun.14 at 11:57 am
Rodman showed up and played every quarter not just the 4th and he played Defense not ride other peoples jocks

  • al Posted: Jun.15 at 10:41 am
    Let’s try this.
Forgetting Rodman, who will be a HOFer soon. Name 3 players that deserve it more than Rob. For me he has done enough to be in, but maybe some others deserve it even more

There are FAR MORE than 3…….Other than the other people previously listed in this blog, I would even vote Bill Laimbeer before Horry.

  • cletus Posted: Jun.15 at 1:34 pm
Now when the HOF committee watches this, I would like to know why they would induct Horry over this person……… http://www.nba.com/video/playerTypes/static/index.html?staticVideo=/video/legacy/nbacom/history/king_bernard_23straight_playoffs
