NBA Says Gasol Didn’t Goaltend in Game 2

So, you know, quit your whining: “For the answer, turn to Page 39 of the 2008-09 Official Rules of the National Basketball Association. Rule No. 11, Section I, Article H states that a player will not ‘vibrate the rim, net or backboard so as to cause the ball to make an unnatural bounce, or bend or move the rim to an off-center position when the ball is touching the ring or passing through. By not calling goaltending, referees determined that Gasol’s action didn’t vibrate the goal to such a degree that it caused ‘an unnatural bounce.’…Bernie Fryer, NBA director of officials, told the Los Angeles Times that no call was the correct call, because Gasol didn’t alter the flight of the ball.”

    Of course he didn’t.

If this ahppened to anyone of the Phoenix Suns, the story would be entirely different.

For that matter, pretty much any team except for the Cavs, Celtics, and Lakers.

Hey, you know why they said it wasn’t a goaltend? because it wasn’t! any doofus can see that. gasol made a great play to alter the shot, and accidentally touched the basket, causing only a very, VERY minor vibration. The shot was long

If that was such a blatant goaltend, why did not one member of the Magic, players AND coaching staff, react to the no-call? because there was no goaltend!

You know what IS a goaltend? Sticking your hand THROUGH the rim to block a shot.

  • Bruno, RJ

its OBVIOUS that it wasn’t goaltending.
that was a ver poor piece by SLAM. you guys putting guys that don’t belong to the basketball world working there…

So what did they decide on that whole Dwight sticking his hand up through the basket to block dunks?

That depends, B! Did he make the RIM shake to a degree that it altered the ball? Was the ball even using the rim as a base of support? ;)

I’m still confused by everyone asking about Dwight’s block through the rim. Who said that play WASN’T goaltending? So strange, the lot of you.

it wasn’t a great defensive play by any of the lakers, actually, as they allowed a man to get behind them for an open shot w the game on the line. lee simply missed from a tough angle. as for dwight, my feeling is that it just happened so fast that it was almost impossible to see, let alone call. that level of athleticism is pretty amazing for any ball fan to consider, esp given that whether it was called or not had no bearing on the game as it happened so early on

    No harm; no foul.
