Report: Celtics Offered Rondo and Allen to Pistons

by Marcel Mutoni

The first time it was reported that Rajon Rondo and Ray Allen were being shopped by the Boston Celtics this summer, the story was attacked savagely. According to Yahoo! Sports, though, the trade rumor has merit.

The Boston Celtics reportedly had one of their junior execs put in a call to Joe Dumars’s office to see if he would be interested in absorbing the contracts of Rondo and Ray Allen. Dumars did not bite:

The Celtics offered Ray Allen and Rajon Rondo to the Detroit Pistons for a package that included Richard Hamilton, Tayshaun Prince and Rodney Stuckey, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Boston general manager Danny Ainge and Detroit’s Joe Dumars never spoke, but rather the Celtics had a lower-level executive make the pitch to a Pistons official over the past weekend, league sources said. Detroit immediately rejected the idea, and it never advanced to the two top executives speaking about particulars.

The soon-to-be 34 Allen is owed $20 mil on his expiring contract next season, making him an attractive piece of trade bait.

Despite Rondo’s stellar play in the ’09 Playoffs, it’s becoming increasingly clear that the Boston front office isn’t too excited about signing him to a fat, long-term deal.

Whoa, I find this quite odd.

Report: Rhianna Offered Rondo and Allen for sexytimes; declined for over-rebounding fatigue

  • Moose Posted: Jun.23 at 9:14 am
As a Celtics fan, I would have to think about this for…..so long until I made a decision about liking it or not. I can’t give up Rondo, that’s it.

  • Holy Baller Posted: Jun.23 at 9:20 am
I just can’t see that trade. I can see their eagerness to get rid of Allen and Rondo, but for those guys? Rip is getting old himself and isn’t the scorer that Allen is, Tayshaun is limited, and Stuckey is defintely getting better but still hasn’t really proven himself as a solid starter yet. I just don’t see it.

  • andrew Posted: Jun.23 at 9:21 am
Moose – I hear ya mate. Rondo is a gun. And likely to be for some time. Allen will end up being one of those old long time players and have played on at least five teams by the times he’s done. No way he’s a Celt for the rest of his career. Unless he retires this season…

  • Eboy Posted: Jun.23 at 9:26 am
That would make the Celts the favorites in the entire league next year…..not just the East.

  • thesubwayconnection Posted: Jun.23 at 9:27 am
Rondo’s their best piece going forward. I really don’t know why they’d want to get rid of him.

  • Mo Charlo Posted: Jun.23 at 9:32 am
    cosign subwayconnection.

  • Mooch Posted: Jun.23 at 9:44 am
well, everyone’s wondering why they would move Rondo. me too. I would love to know what’s going on behind the scenes. is this being pushed by Doc Rivers? does he think Rondo is uncoachable? Did P2 say something? Is this all really happening? I wish someone out there would do some reporting on the story. Too bad the Boston Globe died so long ago.

  • Hisham Posted: Jun.23 at 9:51 am
    weird!

  • BETCATS Posted: Jun.23 at 9:57 am
Dynasty = destroyed. But it wasnt really a dynasty anywayzzzzz.

  • BETCATS Posted: Jun.23 at 9:58 am
If the Celtics throw in some future 1st round picks, Dumars might bite…

  • Ed Posted: Jun.23 at 9:59 am
Why would they trade them? without allen and rondo, there is lesser chance of becoming champs next season. I just dont get it.

  • Z Posted: Jun.23 at 10:00 am
I’ve read multiple stories saying that nobody on the Celts likes Rondo. From personel to upper management. Apparently, he doesn’t take criticism very well and is very stubborn. He doesn’t even execute the plays that Doc is calling. Again, I know nothing of this, but there are a few articles online going in that direction. Any SLAM staffer care to confirm or inform this???

  • Jeff Fox Posted: Jun.23 at 10:06 am
Getting rid of Rondo would be a huge mistake.

  • Overtime Posted: Jun.23 at 10:08 am
Weird…what do the Celtics have against winning? I can maybe see why getting rid of Allen’s contract is sensible, but he’s still the best shooter and comes up big in playoffs…as for Rondo…he nearly averaged a triple double in a playoff series, so I wouldnt be in a rush to give that away.
And also, what Z says above I could totally buy into

  • the bomb Posted: Jun.23 at 10:11 am
how would the front office at boston even consider that. my boy rondo is probably goin to be the sickest pg in the lead behind cp3 and dwill plus ray shots lights out he had an off playoffs but how many clutch threes has he already made for boston. plus if rip doesnt get his minutes he sucks and the other two for the most part suck. this is a terrible move for boston if they want that trophy back

  • Z Posted: Jun.23 at 10:14 am
    confirm or infirm*

  • Trey Posted: Jun.23 at 10:17 am
Doesn’t sound right but if they got Rip,Taye and and Stuckey that would be a lot & good deal for Boston. Boston would have to through in a 1st round draft pick or something. BUT if Boston wants to be in the FINALS they need to Keep KG,Ray,Paul, & Rondo together as long as they can or until Ray’s pay declines alot

  • TADOne Posted: Jun.23 at 10:18 am
Rumor has it that Dumars is still laughing hysterically.

  • Jukai Posted: Jun.23 at 10:19 am
You know, if the Celtics took Rasheed Wallce instead of Tayshun Prince, wouldn’t this trade work? I mean, if the Celtics had a guarentee that Sheed would resign with ‘em.
Celtics have a starting five of Stuckey, Rip, Pierce, Garnett and Rasheed. They suddenly have a deep front court bench with Perkins and Davis. Garnett could relight the fire in Rasheed (or they’d kill each other, but it’s a good risk to take) and you have a killer team right there.
The Pistons would keep Tayshun, who they are desperately trying to hold onto, and get Rondo, a future STAR point guard… get rid of Hamilton and Rasheed… and they get Allen’s 20 million until it expires 2010.
I only assume the salaries don’t match to make this trade work.

  • TADOne Posted: Jun.23 at 10:21 am
Also, Ainge made a b*tch move having one of his underlings make a call he knew wouldn’t go anywhere.

  • kwame Posted: Jun.23 at 10:23 am
    y would they offload rondo?

  • Hisham Posted: Jun.23 at 10:23 am
I can imagine Rondo not being liked, based on the fact that he is really young, yet performs o a level way above anything that was ever expected of him. So what if he doesn’t execute the way the coach wants him to, he gets great numbers and is never blamed by the media for Celtics losses. That kind of stuff COULD get in a young star’s head.

  • Z Posted: Jun.23 at 10:24 am
There’s nothing there for the Pistons. They’ve traded an all-star pg and shelved a HOF guard to make room for Stuck. They commited to him. It is time to blow up that nucleus but Rondo is not the answer for them. If they’re going to package their assets, it’ll be for a bonafide stud (pause) like Bosh or Wade or STAT.

  • Slick Nick Da Ruler Posted: Jun.23 at 10:25 am
Let Detroit die. Dumars dug his grave, let him choke on the dirt.

  • Reflex Posted: Jun.23 at 10:29 am
I can only reiterate what every one else has said, I don’t undertsand trading a PG who averaged a triple double and could be a factor in the next 5-10 yrs, it’s not like good PGs are 2 & a penny. This trade makes no sense, I don’t think this rumour has legs

  • $tev3 Posted: Jun.23 at 10:30 am
    0NE W0RD: CRAZY!

  • Jukai Posted: Jun.23 at 10:32 am
Z: they gotta get those guys in the off-season. Getting Allen’s 20 million contract off the books FOR a Wade/Bosh/STAT would be wiser. They ain’t gonna be able to trade for them.
Everyone: the reason they’re TRADING Rondo is because the Celtics are looking to win NOW, not in 5-10 years. Capish?

  • Z Posted: Jun.23 at 10:41 am
Juks. 1- They’re ALREADY good for 2010. The AI trade put them under the cap and they can sign those guys with their current roster. Sheed and AI come off the books in a week or so. They only have 35 mil committed to next year. 2- Trading your starting pg that you won a ‘ship with and AVERAGED a tripe dub in this postseason to give yourself a chance to win the title is absurd. If the Celts do trade him it has to be for something else than pure basketball reasons.

  • Moose Posted: Jun.23 at 10:45 am
We all know I’m a Celtics fan. Trading Rondo is the last thing the Celtics should do, and the organization knows it. I have no idea why Rajon would be out the door; truly a young leader and they built on his potential from the ground up. The dude is insane, will continue to flourish and lead while doing what he’s expected to do and more. The Celts want to be contenders for a while. Rondo is their best bet if that’s what they really want.

  • Jukai Posted: Jun.23 at 10:45 am
1- They would be way under 35 mil if they got rid of Rip, dude. It would be entirely possible for them to sign Bosh AND Wade. Plus they’d have Rondo.
2- Rondo < Rip and Rasheed. I agree that the Rondo trade seems weird, but I can see the logic in it. The Celtics arent’ going to win with the cast they have now.

  • TADOne Posted: Jun.23 at 10:49 am
Ya’ll are really funny. You honestly think the Pistons would get the better of the deal trading 3/5 of their starting lineup for Rondo and Allen??

  • catalan Posted: Jun.23 at 10:51 am
Impossible: Rondo is overoveroverrated, and Allen (34).

  • Z Posted: Jun.23 at 10:55 am
Jukai, why on Earth wouldn’t they be able to win with the cast they have now?! Unless you think that KG can’t come back at 100%. I expect them to make a run at the title next year.

  • TADOne Posted: Jun.23 at 10:58 am
    Catalan is smart.

  • Tarzan Cooper Posted: Jun.23 at 11:03 am
joe d did all that work to clear cap space and he turned the keys over to stuckey, why in the eff would he switch everything up now? no way this happens

  • Orlando Green Posted: Jun.23 at 11:04 am
DO IT!!! Less competition for the lakeshow!

  • Jukai Posted: Jun.23 at 11:05 am
Tarzan; cause it’s sort of coming out that Stuckey isn’t the point guard people pictured him to be?

  • Ciolkstar Posted: Jun.23 at 11:06 am
At this point Ray is just a expiring contract. Yes he can shoot, but he’s become streakier than ever. Maybe the Celts are feeling like Rondo has gotten too big for his britches. He was clearly the teams’ best player in the post season, but with PP limping and KG out Rondo sort of HAD TO rise. They probably don’t want to resign him to a mega deal and are hoping to get value for him while his stock is at an all-time high. I’ve been saying for awhile that they need to move Ray, its impossible to have any legit depth when you’re paying three guys 20+ mill. I think Rondo may have just been the sweetner (since they have doubts about resigning him for a reasonable price) in a deal focused on moving Ray.

  • JE Posted: Jun.23 at 11:06 am
Report: Danny Ainge is an idiot if this is true.

  • JE Posted: Jun.23 at 11:07 am
(and the Pistons would be dumb to accept, for the record.)

  • Allenp Posted: Jun.23 at 11:08 am
    This is just strange.

  • Jacob J Posted: Jun.23 at 11:10 am
As a Pistons fan I laughed at this trade because we would be losing most of our core group of guys. But I wouldnt mind Rondo for Stucky.

  • nicko Posted: Jun.23 at 11:11 am
that’s cool….i guess averaging a triple double in the playoffs gets you no respect from the celtics

  • Boston4lyfe Posted: Jun.23 at 11:14 am
OKAY IF DANNY AINGE GETS RID OF EITHER I WILL HAVE HIS HEAD!!! and it sucks bcuz i only live 11 miles from boston. listen up…Ray and Rondo are the core along with paul and kevin to keeping this team together. Ray Allen has saved our butts more than you can count…especially against the Bulls in the playoffs this year. Rondo is gonna b stubborn…all great players are like that when their young because of the success going to their head…give him some time. Ray and Rondo are EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO THE CELTICS!! you can’t replace two amazing players like them. Danny…if you want to keep up this championship status…keep building for the FUTURE…and leave my SUPERSTARS ALONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Jukai Posted: Jun.23 at 11:22 am
People act like Stuckey shouldn’t be moved because there was so much invested in him. In the same logic, was it unwise to move Darko when Dumars passed over Wade, Bosh, Carmello, Kaman, Ford, David West, Diaw, Perkins, Barbosa, Howard and Mo Williams (and, in that respect, Pietrus, Korver, Bogans, Bonner, Pachulia, Blake, Walton, Kapono, Outlaw, Collison)?
I don’t think Stuckey will be as bad as Darko, but if they get a good trade, they have to move him.

  • bill breedley Posted: Jun.23 at 11:23 am
celts know they are not getting past the magic next year with that old lineup even with a healthy KG. too many shooters and slashers in the magic team for the old legs to catch up to. joe dumars is an idiot if he is taking ray ray… unless its a swap for AI.

  • TDP Posted: Jun.23 at 11:28 am
Can the Pistons throw in Kwame Brown, too?

  • wayno Posted: Jun.23 at 11:29 am
Stupid Trade for Detroit…Replace Stuckey with draft picks and or filler players (Amir Johnson, Jason Maxiel, etc…) then we’re talking. But Detroit loses too much otherwise. Allen’s contract would be nice to lose in the following season, but Rondo is overrated and his ego has gotten huge. I doubt Boston would be very interested in trading this guy if he didn’t have some MAJOR character flaws or they just thought his playoff success was an anomaly. It sounds to me like they’re trying to exploit an average players good playoff run…

  • Chendaddy Posted: Jun.23 at 11:31 am
Rondo > Stuckey. But you have ot break the bank to sign him to a lucrative, multi-year contract when three players on your team make $70 mil. The Celtics have three stars on the wrong side of 30, one budding star (Rondo), one excellent defensive center (Perkins), and then a bunch of role players. Not even a major expiring contract. Who else could they trade and still expect that caliber of talent back? Big Baby? Leon Powe? But this deal doesn’t make any sense for Detroit either. Like Z said, they’re not pulling the trigger unless they get back a Bosh/Wade/Stoudemire (and I’m throwing in Dirk) type.

  • NJ4Life Posted: Jun.23 at 11:40 am
    CP3>DWill>Chauncey>Rondo>Harris…… ……Bibby>Stuckey>TJ Ford
If I were detroit I’d do this, then trade ray for like rudy gay or someone of that nature.

  • riggs Posted: Jun.23 at 11:41 am
where are you hearing this nobody likes rondo crap? he’s almost like doc’s illegitimate son.

  • Zee! Posted: Jun.23 at 11:41 am
Implosion for this Celtics team is imminent. Seriously. And Rip has to still be pissed after he signed that deal, then no Billups, and now he may be the next to go. And the Celtics front office was smoking serious crack thinking this trade had a shot. They already sold their souls once for KG and Ray Allen, you can’t sell it again.

Chendaddy: Bosh, Wade, STAT and Dirk all leave in 2010. Most teams wont take a chance on them if they’re going to lose them in a year.

  • Moose Posted: Jun.23 at 12:00 pm
    Tommy Patron, it’s a long summer…

  • vtrobot Posted: Jun.23 at 12:05 pm
if the C’s were the 2002 knicks, and zeke were running things, he’d trade rondo. maybe straight up for bynum based on that one pistons playoff game last year. KEEP RONDO. He’s developed into a very good player. Dudes rebounds are one of my favorite things about him. Maybe Stuckey would develop into an even better player in a new system, with new teammates. But that’s an “if” and I’d stick with Rajon for now.

  • Allenp Posted: Jun.23 at 12:38 pm
Why would Ainge refuse to resing Posey, and then trade Rondo later?
I thought he didn’t resign Posey because they wanted to have the cap space to bring Rondo back.
So they sacrificed a proven player who could have helped them deal with Garnett’s injury this year, in order to trade the player they claimed they wanted to resign?
    Just weird.
I mean, Rip has three years on his deal. I think Prince has about two. Stuckey is a youngster, but he’s a downgrade from Rondo.
I don’t understand this move when you consider the previous moves.

  • vic21 Posted: Jun.23 at 12:42 pm
that’s exactly what Boston needs MORE perimeter players who needs a center when you already got Jerkins?

  • Jukai Posted: Jun.23 at 12:42 pm
    Allenp: good point.

breaking news: nicko may be a poor sport

  • nicko Posted: Jun.23 at 1:02 pm
haha no don’t get me wrong rondo is one of my favorite pg’s….but he does have some feminine features.

  • Moose Posted: Jun.23 at 1:05 pm
He’s got some ugly features if we’re gonna talk about his looks. Sorry, Rajon.

  • TADOne Posted: Jun.23 at 1:12 pm
Ok guys, if Detroit agreed to this, Boston would have a starting lineup of Stuckey, Pierce, Rip, Garnett, and Perkins with Tay coming off the bench. Are you telling me they wouldn’t be better? I’m willing to bet that Stuckey could put up very good numbers playing with those guys as well. Detroit would get absolutely screwed in this trade. No question.

  • Gerard Himself Posted: Jun.23 at 2:10 pm
I honestly can’t imagine the Celtics wanting to trade Rondo.

  • wayno Posted: Jun.23 at 2:12 pm
cosign TAD – This would be robbery…Detroit would be SERIOUSLY hurting after that trade. Not to mention Boston would probably be the favorites to win the East if not the ship.

  • nick Posted: Jun.23 at 2:16 pm
@ TAD–this would be terrible for the Pistons. It also makes no sense for Boston, given that the team they currently have won a championship and then should have advanced to the eastern finals…without the man who is undeniably their best player. Why rock the boat?

  • rav Posted: Jun.23 at 2:30 pm
going out on a limb here… boston are going to offer rondo + their pick for the #2/#3 pick to get rubio

  • Izzo Posted: Jun.23 at 2:31 pm
I’d get rid of Rondo in a heartbeat for this move.

  • Logan Posted: Jun.23 at 2:46 pm
boston should not do this, i think if kg and powe wouldve been both 100 percent celtics wouldve won it again this year, and this prolly wouldve never came up, plus rondo is gonna be really good, and ray ray is so clutch and he is a jump shooter so he will be good until he retires just like reggie, its not like he relies on his speed or jumping

  • nick Posted: Jun.23 at 2:53 pm
Logan–I tend to agree. While this trade may improve the C’s bench (by putting tayshaun on it), the Celtics success depends on the health of KG–anything they can do otherwise is probably little more than a horizontal move.

  • no id Posted: Jun.23 at 2:54 pm
This was a practical joke that Ainge had planned for Dumars..Note: Dumars is still laughing as we speak.

  • Seth Posted: Jun.23 at 2:54 pm
Rondo is the best piece in this deal, but Detroit would be silly to give up their core for an aging Allen, regardless of how great Rondo is. But even as a Celtics fan I’d welcome this trade. It’s too good to not accept… from Boston’s standpoint.

  • weezy f. leezy Posted: Jun.23 at 2:58 pm
they want to trade rondo cuz they dont wanna pay him when his contract eventually runs up.

  • nba kid Posted: Jun.23 at 3:49 pm
Do you guys honestly think that Boston gets worse after this? Stuckey, Rip, Pierce, Tay, KG as starting five (or Stuck, Rip, Pierce, KG and Perk) with a suddenly deep bench? It’s Detroit who’d get screwed. Rondo, AI, Ray, all players who need the ball consistently to do anything. Same with Sheed. The C’s would get better, the Pistons wouldn’t.

  • Roy Posted: Jun.23 at 4:00 pm
    Rondo to be traded? Noooooooo!!!!

  • Paul Posted: Jun.23 at 4:10 pm
This is a bad deal for both teams. there is nothing here for Pistons, I like Rondo but you just traded away all his scores. As for Boston, they lose the PG of the future and have 3 more swing guys plus Pierce. Who sits among Prince, Pierce, Stuckey and Hamilton. Strange?

  • Josh D Posted: Jun.23 at 4:27 pm
1.Why get rid of the future of your Franchise in Rondo
    2. Why get rid of Ray-Ray?

  • blaze Posted: Jun.23 at 4:50 pm
Detroit gets the short end of the trade in this one, imagine Kage,Rip,Pierce,Prince. All all-stars on one team, and stuckey is getting better and better, maybe start the vet Marbury. Wow, Cs in 2010.

  • nate the great Posted: Jun.23 at 5:02 pm
rondo eats those three guys alone himself.
    and so does allen.
those two guys and powe are the only celtics i like.
but the 2 main pieces of the pistions?
    they need tayshaun and rip.
    stucky sucks.

  • vtrobot Posted: Jun.23 at 5:07 pm
@ nicko: i don’t want to see a woman with hands like rajon’s. nothing feminine about that. i think there’s a reason why Detroit didn’t even consider this. Ray’s one of, if not my favorite players in the L, but I think that Rip and Tay still have more left in the tank than Ray does. A starting 5 of Stuckey, Rip, PP, KG, and Perk could be lethal. As much as I like Ray and RR, I think the C’s would be lucky to have this one go through.

  • ripriprip Posted: Jun.23 at 5:11 pm
Come on, Rajon? HE’S OUR GODDAMN FUTURE!!!! I agree that shipping out Ray would help with the $$$, but I’m not sure Boston really needs more guards: Marbury, House, Tony Allen. But hey, if we could send Ray, Marbury, and maybe another backup to Motown for Rip, that would be dope ^ ^

  • TADOne Posted: Jun.23 at 5:14 pm
    Nate: Um, no he doesn’t.

  • the baconator Posted: Jun.23 at 5:34 pm
Rondo is one of the best young pg’s in the league. Isn’t this one of the reasons the Celts didn’t repeat this year, refusing to shell out money for a key player (Posey)?

  • wayno Posted: Jun.23 at 5:48 pm
@ Nate – I’d say that 13.4 ppg, 4.9 apg, 3.5 rpg, 1 spg in 31.9 mpg in his first FULL season in the league is not the stat line of a player who “sucks”. He’s going to be a fine player, plus his numbers were better in the post season.

  • wayno Posted: Jun.23 at 5:51 pm
@ baconator – no, they would have had a VERY good chance to win with KG and Powe healthy and without Posey. Posey is a nice player, but I think they would have had a great chance to win with or without him.

  • Mike Posted: Jun.23 at 6:09 pm
They must don’t like Rondo’s attitude or something , there’s got to be more behind this. It might be Doc Rivers who feels that rondo can’t be coached.

This is not about those players skills or talent. This is about money. The C’s can’t afford Allen and Rondo, specially after Rajon’s performance these past playoffs. He is now an expensive player.

  • hillbilly Posted: Jun.24 at 10:09 am
The Bulls-Celtics series absolutely proved Rondo’s worth to his team. Without his numerous contributions, they wouldn’t have made it past the first round. If he continues to work on his mid-range jumper and can raise his FT% to somewhere in the vicinity of room temperature, the kid will be a perennial All-Star. Trading him at this point in his career would be a very unwise move on the part of the C’s.

the only player that would be good for the celtics is RIP keep rondo cause rip is the only guy i would tade allen for come on the guy is uconn he pulled the celtics through alot makeing shots.but its called the big three for the celtics cause well they work togetheir the celtics keep rondo well cause he just needs a 15 foot jumper and hes golden hes got the handel that is only compared to chris paul and williams.he’s good now and still rising.he stepped up and people over look trhe fact the ray allen had the best season of his carrer. look at the numbers but hey call me wrong but if doesnt tell u the c’s need them o wel the only player we need back now is james posey

I wish Red were alive and waving his little magic stick then the C’s would be able to steal someone in the draft that would be perfect……
