    Shaq To Cleveland? Done

    Here comes The Big Cav…

    by Lang Whitaker

Not so fast, LeBron. Danny Ferry just got you a big man.

With one year and ticking until Mr. James reaches free agency, the Cavs have made their boldest attempt yet to vault into the upper echelon. The Cleveland Plain-Dealer is reporting that the Cavs have agreed to trade Ben Wallace and Sasha Pavlovic to Phoenix for the Big Cactus, the MDE, the Diesel, the Daddy: Shaquille O’Neal.

No, seriously, that’s all they had to give up, just Pavlovic and Wallace. (UPDATE: And the 46th pick and $500,000.) Of course this means Cleveland’s going to be on the hook for giving Shaq $20 million next year.

    But heck, it’s Shaq.

    A Kobe/Shaq Finals in 2010, anyone?

The BIG Ohio. Shaq will put pre-game pics w/ the invisible cameras on his invisible Twitter page.

    • Paul Johnson Posted: Jun.25 at 12:55 am
Wow I hope Shaq stays healthy. If he does it could be good for cleveland but I still think they still need one more guy for them to go all the way.

    • wilford brimley Posted: Jun.25 at 12:59 am
Basically Phoenix admits they screwed up by trading Marion for Shaq. They would be saving a ton more salary if they had kept Marion. And they would have been as competitive, if not better for that first year when Shaq was adjusting. Great work by Steve Kerr.

    • shaqdiesel32 Posted: Jun.25 at 1:01 am
all they gotta do now is get rid of zydrunas and joe smith and try to add either vince or rasheed. and the tiles locked

    • niQ Posted: Jun.25 at 1:02 am
wow. the season hasn’t even started yet and it’s already exciting. however, shaq doens’t have the miracle staff of PHX anymore….

    • Prison Mike Posted: Jun.25 at 1:03 am
This is the worst thing that could happen to LeBron’s career. Either he couldn’t win until Shaq got there, or he couldn’t win even with Shaq. I’m hoping Kobe beats LeBron and Shaq in the Finals. That would seal his legacy.

    • niQ Posted: Jun.25 at 1:04 am
now watch LeBron pull a Elton Brand and change teams. Even better if he went to PHX.

    • Tommy Vercetti Posted: Jun.25 at 1:10 am
I can’t see this trade being much help for the Cavaliers though.

    • simmy sosa Posted: Jun.25 at 1:16 am
I’m sorry but I do not think this is a good fit for Cleveland. How will Lebron get to the paint with both Big Z and Shaq clogging it? And if you think Shaq is the answer for Dwight think again. Dwight might actually murder him for talking trash and never helping him.

    • simmy sosa Posted: Jun.25 at 1:20 am
Not literally murder, but like 30 and 15 and 5 murder.

    • Jukai Posted: Jun.25 at 1:21 am
and with this trade, I am officially rooting against the Cavaliers.

    • ilikeshoes Posted: Jun.25 at 1:22 am
this will make cleveland vs. boston interesting, but lakers are still best team in the league

    • g Posted: Jun.25 at 1:23 am
his old ass he gonna come off the bench n jus get into foul trouble

    • Homie Posted: Jun.25 at 1:26 am
and how does this help phx, exactly? ben wallace was talking retirement (and might as well retire), and Pavlovic is, well, ehhhhh. Other than the salary dump, which I’m sure is at Sarvers’ behest, I don’t see the point.

    • aj Posted: Jun.25 at 1:35 am
Lebron needs Shaq to win a championship……LOL

    • Jake Posted: Jun.25 at 1:40 am
Great move for Phoenix, they’ll save a ton of money. Also they can work out a deal with Samsung/Sony/etc and get Amare & J Rich dunking over some of the TV’s that they’ll be watching the playoffs from. Now that’s good marketing.

    • Pardeep Posted: Jun.25 at 1:41 am
Big Z for Vince Carter tommorw at the draft.

    • clapzilla Posted: Jun.25 at 1:43 am
The Hype Machine Will Suck The Life Out of The East Next Season. Whoever Wins Will Be Overlooked Because Cleveland Didn’t Win.

    • neaorin Posted: Jun.25 at 1:43 am
this is a panic move by Danny Ferry, which basically means the Cavs really got the “either we win this year or I’m gone” speech from LeBron. NOT a good sign.

    • stryfee Posted: Jun.25 at 1:47 am
i would have traded for carter

    • penny Posted: Jun.25 at 1:59 am
same time next year, Shaq will be dissin’ James… Yes! let the drama unfold

    • Rnz Posted: Jun.25 at 2:12 am
Wow, this retro thingie is really catching on huh?…from retro jersey, last year we have a flashback of Lakers and Celtics finals…and probably next year, a Kobe and Shaq finals…Stern is a friggin genius

    • Hursty Posted: Jun.25 at 2:13 am
      A few things.
      1) Good for PHX. They get a reasonably athletic player in Wallace at the 4/5 and another outside shooter in Pavlovic.
      2) They get quicker at the 4/5 spots overall with Amare playing centre again.
      3) This could seriously blow up in the face of the Cavs ( I think neaorins statement above me is certainly a possibility).
      4) This means the Cavs will be looking to deal off Z in the Draft, and pick up a shooter/athletic wing player or athletic big in his place. (Varejao will back up Shaq AND play 4 I think. JJ Hickson might get some burn too).
      5) It is probably worth the risk for Cleveland. It’s a 50/50 as to whether Shaq will be rested and healthy for pre-season (and FIT) or just a mess after not having the playoffs this year.

    • Shaq To Cleveland? Done Posted: Jun.25 at 2:14 am
[...] O’Neal. No, seriously, that’s all they had to give up, just Pavlovic and Wallace. (UPDATE: And click for more var gaJsHost = ((”https:” == document.location.protocol) ? “https://ssl.” : [...]

    • Hersey Posted: Jun.25 at 2:17 am
Marion had an opt out and the Suns would have lost him for nothing last summer. I seriously doubt Pavlovic or Wallace ever plays a game in Phoenix. It’s nice to have flexibility again but Suns fans still have no idea what ownership and Kerr are going to do with this team.

    • tealish Posted: Jun.25 at 2:25 am
Couple things. 1) I thought Shaq guaranteed a couple ‘chips for PHX? 2) So easy to hate CLE now. Could it rival my hate for LA? Perhaps.

    • doyouwantmore Posted: Jun.25 at 2:32 am
      A few things about Hursty:
1)Lives in the year 1999 when Ben Wallace was a reasonably athletic player.
2)Amare has made it pretty clear he doesn’t like playing center.
3)I agree with Hursty on his #3 point, but for different reasons.
4)Big Z and the Big Mercenary have sore knees, sore feet, sore ankles. They complement each other well, and if Cleveland trades Big Z they are stupid, stupid, stupid.
5)Is getting Shaq for one year really creating a team that can compete in the long run, or just trying to buy Lebron off with one (maybe) championship run and then going back to rebuilding mode? The answer is yes.

    • dma Posted: Jun.25 at 2:34 am
i thought the reason the LeBrons lost to Orlando was because they didn’t have another wing player to guard Turk/Shard/Pietrus/Lee combo? So what did they do? They went out and grabbed an even bigger and slower guy. Here’s to Ferry somehow packaging Z and West for someone halfway decent at the wing… oh I don’t know.. Richard Jefferson? Oh wait.. too late again

    • Myles Brown Posted: Jun.25 at 2:43 am
This is not going to end well for anyone involved.

    • TheGoldMedalist Posted: Jun.25 at 2:45 am
Regardless of defending the pick and roll or what have you, the biggest concern for the Cavs has been there frontline. The past two teams to knock them out of the playoffs had the best big men in their respective years with KG and Howard and what if Boozer goes to Miami? This was a panic move but not necessarily a bad one

    • JE Posted: Jun.25 at 2:45 am
They should’ve included the Pheonix medical staff in the deal.

    • Joey E. Posted: Jun.25 at 2:48 am
what a bad deal. i hate the nba. wallace and sasha!? really?

    • jub_al Posted: Jun.25 at 2:49 am
The East is getting more and more interesting..
Anybody think this will affect Grant Hill’s decision to stay in PHX?.. and before all you wise-guys post “who cares?”, well, i do…

    • Bigi Posted: Jun.25 at 2:49 am
      Hardaway=Finals
      Kob=3 Rings
      Wade=Ring
      Amare+Nash=*meh*
      LeBron=?

    • Mike Posted: Jun.25 at 2:50 am
If this is Cleveland’s best attempt at keeping LeBron in Cleveland after next season this makes no sense. Shaq is past his prime and though still a dominant big man he probably only has 2-3 max more years of even starter potential. They might be able to win 1 championship together, but this isn’t a combination thats going to entice Lebron to stay in Cleveland for the chance to win multiple championships in the future. I’m still not even sure they could win a championship next year anyway…

    • PeeDee Posted: Jun.25 at 2:53 am
WooooW!!! I cant wait to see the first interviews with Lebron&Shaq together!!! can you imagine how confusing it will be when they both start talkin about themself in third person????
And i also cant wait till the blame-game starts…lebron is one of few players shaq hasent criticized jet!!!
and then theres coach brown, who maybe alredy has writen a letter to mr. stern, to resere an allstar spot for shaq…and then of course all the ridicolous twitter-updates, the t-shirts, stupid press conferences etc…. with shaq, clevland will be one thing for sure: the most (self)talked about team in the nba (in sports maybe!)….this will be great!!! and imagine all the play-off hate they`ll be spreading:
first round vs boston: lebron gets his revenge for 2008
second round vs miami: shaq hating on wade
conf. finals vs magic: shaq hating on everyone and lebron shakin hands with dwight after every basket
finals vs lakers: WOOOOOOOOWWWWWW!!!! so much hate but into one series!!!!

    • Joey E. Posted: Jun.25 at 2:53 am
so… welcome to cleveland rasheed and/or jason kidd?

    • blaze Posted: Jun.25 at 2:53 am
Shaq may not be the piece needed to put them over the top, but he doesnt hurt them either, If nothing else his experience will be valued in the locker room. I wish the big fella good luck.

    • Joey E. Posted: Jun.25 at 2:58 am
      experience wasnt their problem

    • Zee!! Posted: Jun.25 at 3:01 am
Circle the Lakers vs Cavs this season, then when the Lakers show how pointless this trade was, ignore the Cavs.

    • TheGoldMedalist Posted: Jun.25 at 3:03 am
Yea I guess those 4-time champion Magic were a little too experienced for Cleveland huh? Oh wait…

    • Jack Posted: Jun.25 at 3:16 am
I don’t like that everyone is saying it’s KOBE/Shaq finals, it’s Kobe this, Lakers that. Fact is, the Lakers are gonna lose a big piece this offseason and won’t be as good as they were this year. You heard it here first kids. The Lakers will NOT be the 2010 NBA Western Conference champs.

    • Peter Posted: Jun.25 at 3:22 am
Lebron has to develop a better mid range j to complement Shaq’s interior presence otherwise this could be a strange pairing. It’s funny how wade and kobe were criticised for only winning with shaq, but shaq has been more eager than anyone else to match himself up with another top 10 talent.

    • Nick M Posted: Jun.25 at 3:27 am
At least they’re gonna combine their pre game rituals into one big ‘cinematic’ intro!

    • B. Long Posted: Jun.25 at 3:35 am
Wow. I hope he’s still coming to Shreveport this weekend.

    • Anton Posted: Jun.25 at 3:37 am
And the Oscar for best supporting Shaqtor goes to..LeBron James!

    • neaorin Posted: Jun.25 at 3:39 am
To be clear, I don’t think it’s a bad move for the Cavs - Ben Wallace is going to retire, Pavlovic should do himself a favor and go to Europe, and Shaq’s deal expires in 2010, so they don’t lose any flexibility. And they can deal Z’s expiring as well because he’s going to get bought out and return to the Cavs. However, it’s 100% clear now that LeBron is NOT staying in Cleveland if they don’t win it all next season.

    • Freedom Fries Posted: Jun.25 at 3:40 am
I like shaq too much to say what’s on my mind (tho’ he should take a page out of Jeff Jordan’s book) – I cosign with Myles 1000%

    • JESSEG Posted: Jun.25 at 3:52 am
If the Suns can somehow get Camby from the clippers now they would be in really good shape if you ask me.

    • DJ Pierrot Posted: Jun.25 at 4:10 am
New Shaq nickname in Akron : The Big OTR !
For Off The Road tire : huge, for driving slow but you can’t destroy it !

    • Mike Posted: Jun.25 at 4:38 am
      Jack, don’t start it!

    • J Dizzle Posted: Jun.25 at 4:41 am
@ Jack. You definitely aren’t the first here to say that the Lakers won’t be in the finals next year. There are so many Laker haters here that have already said that, you surely aren’t the first. Thanks for trying to enlighten us. Anyway, back on topic. Never pictured shaq and lebron on the same team. Not too sure how this will work out for the Cavs, but it will be interesting to see how the East unfolds now. Probably will be a few more big trades, but this is pretty huge right now.

    • Mike Posted: Jun.25 at 4:41 am
Who’s going to beat us in the west, please don’t say the spurs. You think Mitch don’t have a trick up his sleeve?

    • Kas Posted: Jun.25 at 4:43 am
damn it, now i have to like the cavs.

    • BostonBaller Posted: Jun.25 at 5:24 am
I think it’s great for the Cavs short term (that’s all they want right now yo secure James)but I don’t think James will sign a long term contract, more like a 2 year deal just incase the Cavs do nothing in the next 2 years. Big Z shouldn’t go anywhere, he is a huge asset. This would be good for PHX if they knew what they were doing. Go Celtics!

    • Overtime Posted: Jun.25 at 5:31 am
Anyone else feel America tipping to the Eastside once more?

    • GeT On ThE LeVeL Posted: Jun.25 at 5:32 am
Ok look the lake show will repeat nd the cavs will be revealed as a joke by the celts….jkidd to LA do it mitch!

    • LeoneL Posted: Jun.25 at 5:32 am
And he found out all about the trade on Twitter?

    • GeT On ThE LeVeL Posted: Jun.25 at 5:37 am
So draft day is upon us clips once again will turn a star into a injury plagued nitemare….seriously Blake Griffin rips his ACL two weeks into the season mark my words

    • SwingMan Posted: Jun.25 at 5:41 am
Be careful what you wish for, Cavs fans - Shaq propped himself back up here in Phx, bloated his ego and wouldn’t shut the hell up about getting touches. Chemistry went to hell and left the team divided. That’s what you’re getting - an old Shaq who’s out for himself than the team.

    • Peter Posted: Jun.25 at 5:45 am
Who will retire with the most championships, Kobe, Shaq or Duncan, I think it will end like this. Kobe 7
      Duncan 5
      Shaq 4

    • GeT On ThE LeVeL Posted: Jun.25 at 6:07 am
Hey pete seriously 7? For the mamba…5 at best let’s be real kobes got like two years of effective kobe play nd a three peat is HiGhLy unlikely unless chris bosh falls from the NY bound plane

    • Gerard Himself Posted: Jun.25 at 6:19 am
@Hursty: “1) Good for PHX. They get a reasonably athletic player in Wallace at the 4/5 and another outside shooter in Pavlovic.” Are you serious? Well, that’s a dumb question, because you obviously are. First of all: Ben Wallace has lost it. The man is old, and not the Pistons Ben Wallace anymore. And it’s not even sure if he’ll play next season. In fact, that’s probably the reason they got him. And Pavlovic? He shot 36% from 3-point range in his career, his FG%? 41%! That’s not great shooting, that means you can shoot the 3, but can’t do anything else. We should nickname Sasha “Pavlov”, because he’s a clown.

    • jumpman3224 Posted: Jun.25 at 6:31 am
If nothing else this tells LBJ that his front office is willing to make a splash and since his contract runs out after the season it keeps them in the Bosh race for next summer. I don’t think this makes them the favorites, it will be interesting to see how he plays without the PHX medical staff.
      The Big Witness?

    • Logan Posted: Jun.25 at 6:50 am
Wow…mixed feelings about this trade. Shaq WILL clog the lane more, no doubt…but I am sure the Cavs have a deal for a wing in waiting….will have to reserve judgement till then….

    • fredd Posted: Jun.25 at 6:54 am
this trade comes 3 months too late

    • Airswade Posted: Jun.25 at 7:14 am
There is no way on this earth that Kobe is winning 7 titles. That is absurd!

    • Reflex Posted: Jun.25 at 7:17 am
Kobe vs LeBron & Shaq will have Stern jizzing in his pants. If the NBA gods (and by NBA gods I mean the refs) make this happen, it’d probably be the biggest thing since that time I wore odd socks into work, what a day that was…

    • underdog Posted: Jun.25 at 7:20 am
Shaq officially become a journeyman. It’s sad to see this. He should be retired by now. Just like other big man, he doesn’t know when to call it a quit. It’s same like Ewing in Seattle or Hakeem in Toronto.

    • Freedom Fries Posted: Jun.25 at 7:21 am
I still cosign with Myles 1000%

    • Z Posted: Jun.25 at 7:25 am
They got 18-8 on 61% shooting. Forget the name and the rep : they gave up a Ben Wallace and Sasha! That’s a no brainer. Money is obviously not an issue to Dan Gilbert at this point and I expect them to still get Vince or Charlie V. (or both)

    • Yassi Posted: Jun.25 at 7:36 am
Ha, great move! No title for LeTravel! Thx!

    • neaorin Posted: Jun.25 at 7:44 am
@underdog: obviously averaging 18 and 8 on 60% shooting means it’s time to quit. Right.

    • Moose Posted: Jun.25 at 8:14 am
      Oh. My. God.

    • Cheryl Posted: Jun.25 at 8:39 am
      I don’t know what to say. (I do, but I won’t)
      This should be interesting.

    • Moose Posted: Jun.25 at 8:39 am
      Cheryl put it right.

    • Peter Posted: Jun.25 at 8:42 am
Airswade, I remember when people claimed kobe wouldn’t win one, now he has four. Kobe has a young talented team surrounding him, I think it is safe to say he’ll be in the finals for the majority of the next six years, which to me equals 2-3 more rings.

    • Anton Posted: Jun.25 at 8:42 am
Anyone who says that Shaq Daddy will “clog the lane and disrupt offense” hasn’t watched the Cavs beyond SportsCentre highlights.
Z complements The Big Shaqalier well (have you ever seen Z in the post? Neither have I). And The Diesel will disrupt Cavs’ offense? What f*cking offense?! LeBron dribbling 25 feet from the basket for 20 seconds before going 1-on-5?
We’re still in the market for a PF and a swingman so it should add up to good things in the upcoming most important season for the Cavs.
If you want to sip the Haterade, you can’t do it based on strategic grounds. At least in theory, this trade can work.

    • rav Posted: Jun.25 at 8:54 am
the move of a desperate GM - unless they are guaranteed to keep lebron and snag a quality FA (e.g. bosh) then this move will be a massive bust, esp considering you can get a much younger, better chandler who’s at half the price

    • Jukai Posted: Jun.25 at 9:05 am
ahah no really though, I’m rooting against the Cavaliers. Anton is so off, it’s not like Big Z plays on the high post. When they want to kickstart Big Z, they throw him in the post and have him hit a few of those MS-hooks or something. One of the reasons Big Z was shooting so terribly in the Orlando series was because he couldn’t make any headway in the post with Howard on him, so he never picked up his game.
      This is a BAD TRADE.

    • Ben Osborne Posted: Jun.25 at 9:15 am
      Love it for the Cavs.

    • Anton Posted: Jun.25 at 9:16 am
Whether or not this ultimately works, stop and think about the trade itself. The Cavs just traded for an All-NBA player and a Hall of Famer for Ben Wallace and Sasha Pavlovic, a second round pick in a bad draft and $500,000(what a steal). Not Delonte West. Not a first rounder. Not J.J. Hickson. This is asset management from Danny Ferry, who has been waiting for a long time to make this deal. That is what he does, he uses his assets to make one-sided deals. How can he do it? Because he has Dan Gilbert writing checks and LeBron packing the house. If this trade happened during the trade deadline, the Suns wanted at least 2 more players that are actually in the Cavs rotation.
@Jukai: exactly, now Howard would be occupied with Kazaam and Z would go against Gortat or LeBron at the 4 (god forbid he figures out the LePostUp actually works). With each old big playing 20-25 mins, both are well rested and are utilized according to their specialty.

    • Peter Posted: Jun.25 at 9:17 am
They’ll get rid of Z most likely wouldn’t you think? btw I’m not the same Peter that thinks Kobe will win 7 titles…that’s a huuuuuge call to make. Maybe, maybe he’ll get another one. And I’m a kobe/lakers fan.

    • Moose Posted: Jun.25 at 9:19 am
      The Shaqalier is coming!

    • Peter Posted: Jun.25 at 9:19 am
Oh and when Lebron develops a post game that he can go to when his shot isn’t falling, its going to be scary.

    • Eboy Posted: Jun.25 at 9:24 am
Jukai is a bad commenter. I agree with Ben, this is huge for the Cavs…..one more solid move and their golden.

    • Dirty Frank Posted: Jun.25 at 9:28 am
This is a steal for the Cavs. They gave up Wallace and Pavlov - come on! If Shaq goes back to his last year in Miami self he’s still better than Wallace and he’s a great low post passer.

    • Jeff Fox Posted: Jun.25 at 9:40 am
My poor Suns are being destroyed by Sarver and Kerr!

    • Bryan Posted: Jun.25 at 9:42 am
I’m waiting on shaq to put the suns on blast.

    • Spaceship Jay Posted: Jun.25 at 9:47 am
No Jeff, your poor Suns were destroyed when Shaq stepped of the plane and into your FREEZING Suns arena. GO GALACTUS! Eater of NBA Franchises. This SEALS LeBron to New York.

    • Spaceship Jay Posted: Jun.25 at 9:47 am
      SEALS… S-E-A-L-S. Seals.

    • Todd Spehr Posted: Jun.25 at 9:51 am
Somewhere Sarver and Kerr are counting the pennies they saved.

    • Dirty Frank Posted: Jun.25 at 10:06 am
I’ll always be bothered by hate. Eater of NBA franchises? The only franchise he has not made better, got farther in the playoffs, and made more popular are the Suns. It is possible that Shaq was PART of the reason that the Suns missed the playoffs but maybe that was also because of Amare’s eye injury and Barrabosa’s crappy play.

    • wayno Posted: Jun.25 at 10:15 am
The ego’s on that team are going to be absolutly unbearable…just sign Terrell Owens and you have the most egotistical team in sports… 1 more reason for me not to like Cleveland…Let’s just hope that miserable city’s championship drought continues and LeBronze goes to NY.

    • Spaceship Jay Posted: Jun.25 at 10:16 am
Frank, Shaq is a Franchise destroyer as easily as Kobe is a Mike clone with personality dissorders. Stop acting as if this is not so. Yes, Barrabosa’s play was DEFINITLEY a factor in the Sun’s failure. LOL, GTFOH. Russ, care to chime in?

    • Dirty Frank Posted: Jun.25 at 10:20 am
The Magic, Lakers, and Heat sure don’t seem destroyed to me.

    • Dirty Frank Posted: Jun.25 at 10:22 am
O.k. Wait a minute. I think I get what you’re saying. Yeah, his selfish attitude which results in forcing his trade and/or leaving in free agency has cost these teams championships or more championships BUT each of his first three teams were still better off after he left than before he arrived.

    • Z Posted: Jun.25 at 10:23 am
Suns missed the playoffs because of Shaq? Reaaaaally?

    • Dirty Frank Posted: Jun.25 at 10:24 am
Lol regarding “Mike clone with personality dissorders”. I like that.

    • Spaceship Jay Posted: Jun.25 at 10:30 am
Yep, Kobe is arguably the best basketball player in the NBA right now. But Dean Martin, he is not.

    • CF98 Posted: Jun.25 at 10:31 am
Yeah LeBron is so gone after this season..

    • Izzo Posted: Jun.25 at 10:40 am
Cleveland seem pretty good at making ‘meh, why not?’ trades.Meh.

    • nashty Posted: Jun.25 at 10:47 am

just what the spurs want after a nice trade, so theyre still way under the radar and nobody talking about him. all i want for christmas is a healthy manu and tiago splitter.

    • Darksaber Posted: Jun.25 at 10:55 am
hmm, even snorkeling off the Bali coast, this news reached me. So Shaq arranged for the Arizonian fountain of youth to be traded with him, right? Bron better REALLY start working on that catch and shoot 3 from the wing. L’il warriors gonna be passing out of them double teams…. A lot! Shaq’s playing with Anti-Kobe. Let the fun (and games) begin. Later slammers, back to finding Nemo’s, i go.

    • Allenp Posted: Jun.25 at 10:58 am
Gotta make that trade all day everyday.
The corpse of Ben Wallace and a dude named Sasha?
What are they doing in Phoenix?

BREAKING NEWS: STEVE NASH ANNOUNCED HIS RETIREMENT. ALSO, AMARE, LEANDRO, AND JRICH ARE EXCITED ABOUT TAKING INSANE AMOUNTS OF BAD SHOTS EVERY GAME AGAIN.

    • Logan Posted: Jun.25 at 11:02 am
Hearing a lot of talk like ‘in theory this works’ ‘if Shaq is motivated…’ and all that is intangible. Does Shaq make a difference to the Cavs? A big Yes. Will they win the chip basis only this trade? Probably not. Will sahaq throw the guards under the bus for not passing him the ball enough? In about 20 odd games. Bottom line, Shaq can still be dominant in spurts and stretches. He will get a lot of attention. To get over the hump, the Cavs need to add good spot up shooters to their team….

    • Allenp Posted: Jun.25 at 11:02 am
How can this be a bad trade when the Cavs gave up NOTHING!
Seriously, they sacrificed nothing. They had to make a move to satisfy Lebron, and they did. And to make that move, they gave up NOTHING!
      NOTHING!
      NOTHING!
      NOTHING!
In case y’all missed it, the Cavs gave up NOTHING!

Will Steve Nash be a Knick?
He kind of mentioned it at Showdown at Chinatown yesterday.

    • Allenp Posted: Jun.25 at 11:06 am
Sure, the Cavs need another good wing, I think they’ll find one since the League is littered with decent wings.
The point is, they got Shaq for BEN WALLACE AND SASHA!.
Put aside the Shaq hate, and I know that’s hard. Shaq is still a decent center, and they traded NOTHING to acquire him.
Come on, this makes PERFECT sense. Now, Ferry needs to trade Big Z and get him a wing player. There are teams out there that like Z’s skill set.

    • Allenp Posted: Jun.25 at 11:07 am
Or, they could keep Z, move him to the bench when Shaq plays, but also give Shaq breaks on back-to-backs like Phoenix did.
They just need one more wing, that’s all. A nice 2/3. I don’t know who they get, but I know that’s the easiest position in the league to fill. Hell, isn’t Ariza a free agent! And Odom?
There are moves to be made people.

    • Babygab Posted: Jun.25 at 11:09 am
I hope Shaq is already in the gym working out trying to drop a couple pounds. If the big Aristotle comes out fit, motivated, if he’s abble to produce a reasonnable 20-10 then the Cavs could go all te way. Every year we’re kind of going back to a kind of balance between east and west don’t you think ? Oh ! And I love the move by San Antonio. This is gonna give interesting battles between the spurs and the lakers. Man can wait for next season, I’m drooling like and dog in front of steak !!!!! Bring it on !!!!

    • Dirty Frank Posted: Jun.25 at 11:11 am
Well said Allenp. I think they need to keep Z.

    • Chendaddy Posted: Jun.25 at 11:17 am
Nothing wrong with this trade. At this point in their careers, Shaq is certainly better than Ben Wallace and Sasha Pavlovic combined. Meanwhile, Phoenix wasn’t going anywhere with Shaq, and they didn’t pick up any extra years on contracts. Plus this is the type of draft where the talent difference between the 26th and the 46th pick won’t be that great, so who knows if Phoenix may actually pick up a nice piece there. Does this solve Cleveland’s problems? Hell no. Shaq can’t contain Howard any better than Varejao or Ilgauskas could. Yeah, he will give Cleveland a decent post scorer, but he will also clog space and make it harder for LeBron to score on drives to the paint, which is his bread and butter. He doesn’t have a mid-range game to complement a dominant post scorer, re: Tracy McGrady when Yao is healthy. But most of all, you still have 6′3″ Delonte West as the second best perimeter defender on the team. Against the Magic, if LeBron defended Rashard Lewis, no one could check Dwight Howard or Hedo Turkoglu. If the Cavs face the Magic again right now, LeBron would defend Lewis, and they STILL don’t have anyone to check Dwight Howard or Hedo Turkoglu.

    • Z Posted: Jun.25 at 11:19 am
Allenp, well they’ve been talking about Vince for a while and the Nets seem willing to give him up. They’re not ready to win now so having Vince over there doesn’t make that much sense. Mo, Vince, LBJ, Andy, Shaq with D-West, Z and Boobie and JJ off the bench. That could actually work with Bron playing the 4 from time to time.

    • Canuck Posted: Jun.25 at 11:21 am
Correct me if I’m wrong but Shaq’s contract is done after this season, meaning they’ll have +20 million coming in for 2010. So all the people thinking that they are scrapping everything for a win just this season is ridiculous. This move is for a chip this year to make LeBron want to stay, and then that money is an excellent asset to have going forward should LeBron decide to stay. Great move by the Cavs.

    • Tarzan Cooper Posted: Jun.25 at 11:23 am
z, who would the cavs trade for vince? dummy. allen, need i remind you of pau for kwame/javaris??? now, pau is 28 times the player shaq is, and is the perfect player for the triangle offense.

      Tarzan
Not sure how Pau relates to me comment. You’ll have to explain it to me.
      Chendaddy
Shaq can guard Dwight. If Kendrick Perkins can guard Dwight, Shaq can guard Dwight. The problems you mentioned about the wing players are true, which is why I discussed the fact that it’s quite easy to pick up a quality wing in the league.
However, Shaq can guard Dwight. He may struggle in pick and rolls, but he has no problem putting a body on players and guarding them. Hell, Shaq can still guard Tim Duncan. Y’all are slipping on Shaq’s low post defense. He’s lazy and not a great shot blocker, but he can play one-on-one defense as well as anybody in the league.

    • Allenp Posted: Jun.25 at 11:51 am
Ferry needs to make Odom a Cav.
Great complement to Shaq and Lebron. And a helluva player as the FOURTH option on any team.

    • Z Posted: Jun.25 at 11:52 am
Tarzan: Salary dump. Dummy. The Nets would give up Vince for financial reasons. Wally’s expiring now and Z is expiring next year.

      http://hoopshype.com/salaries/cleveland.htm

    • Rachel Posted: Jun.25 at 12:16 pm
Folks are saying this is an attempt to keep LeBron, but perhaps the Cavs, hearing all the statements LeBron has made, have already decided their chance of keeping him isn’t good. Maybe they’re focused more on making the most of the one LeBron year they have left. It could be Cleveland’s last chance to win a championship for a long, long time. Just like the Spurs dealt for Richard Jefferson and his big contract to make the most of the few years Tim Duncan’s knees have left, so the Cavs may figure this deal is the way to make the most of the one year in Cleveland that LeBron has left. I like the deal simply because it makes things more interesting, and I can’t wait to see how LeBron and Shaq will (or won’t) mesh.

    • Jacob J Posted: Jun.25 at 12:42 pm
I say if Detroit dosent sign Rasheed back (which they probably wont) I would like to see him in Cleveland playing for a title.

    • Jacob J Posted: Jun.25 at 12:46 pm
If they get Rasheed I would finally root for them as my 3rd favorite team behind 1.Detroit and 2.Denver.

    • jbn74sb Posted: Jun.25 at 12:55 pm
The Lakers just won the 2010 title. Thanks Cleveland.

    • Michael Posted: Jun.25 at 1:19 pm
Classi panic move. The reason they lost to Orlando is because they were trying to guard Hedo, and Lewis with Mo Williams and Delonte West. All this does is make them an even more stagnant offensive team and kills them on defense. Orlando killed them with the pick and roll, Shaq has always been horrible defending it and don’t even think about trying to guard teams in the transition.

    • Z Posted: Jun.25 at 1:21 pm
That’s not a very rational statement, Bodie. I remember you arguing that Chris Mihm could be better than Shaq so I’m taking it with a grain of salt. The Cavs are worse off having Shaq in their team instead of Ben and Sasha. Really? Reaaaally?

    • Michael Posted: Jun.25 at 1:26 pm
By the way, Shaq has now played with all but one of the “next Jrodans” (The One Being Vince) Penny
      Kobe
      Wade
      Grant
Lebron One other thing, Eboy is like Bill simmons in that he constantly speaks as if he is the smartest basketball head ever yet is wrong about everything, and never admits it.

You could take your pick of posters who fill that mantra Michael, there are plenty of them on this site. Eboy does personify that type of poster though…lol

    • Z Posted: Jun.25 at 1:45 pm
Myles, for real? You don’t see how Shaq playing center is better than Zydrunas? I have to convice you? Dealing for an all-star that posted 18-8 on 61% last season and doesn’t need a double team to guard someone on the block for two guys that are out of the rotation is not an upgrade? / Please people, stop acting like it’s impossible to drive to the basket with Shaq playing. Kobe did it way back when and D-Wade did it on his way to a championship 3 years ago. Get real.

    • Myles Brown Posted: Jun.25 at 1:50 pm
They both have much better midrange games than Bron. And this isnt way back when anymore, or 2005. Shaq is getting older by the minute.

    • B. Long Posted: Jun.25 at 1:53 pm
Z, those teams were also coached by people who actually had an offensive game plan. Mike Brown is pretty much an NBA defensive cordinator.

    • The Seed Posted: Jun.25 at 1:54 pm
The BIG Paul Revere is riding to another team for the fifth time and has been traded for the third time because he is so unstoppable and for another cookie, like Kobe got this year. Shaq would have fitted perfectly in the now Boston “Why trade Rondo” Massacare.

    • Myles Brown Posted: Jun.25 at 1:55 pm
He posted 18-8 for a team that didnt make the playoffs. I just dont see how he solves any problems defensively, and offensively he will spend time adjusting to Brons style of play in the paint. I dont see him as a complementary piece to Bron. The wing player is more important at this point.

    • Michael Posted: Jun.25 at 2:07 pm
Look, i just don’t think this helps them beat Orlando. On the otther hand they may not have to beat Orlando. If Orlando meets Boston first, i don’t think they can beat Boston with a healthy Kg.

    • Z Posted: Jun.25 at 2:10 pm
1- What does their midrange game have to do with the ability to get in the paint with Shaq in the middle? Wade didn’t drive LESS when Shaq was there.
2- Saying that Shaq is getting older is completely irrelevent. They’re not expecting 29 and 12 from him. 18 and 8 will do just fine, they traded for 2009 Shaq and they’re expecting 2009 Shaq. (the 3rd best center in the league not the MDE).
3- You have to be blind to not see that he gives them the option of NOT doubling down low. Shaq can handle his man on the block by himself just fine. That has a GREAT impact on the Cavs’ interior D.
4- They gave up nothing. nada. niet. rien du tout.
5- As much as everybody is playing the adjusting to Bron in the paint argument, the truth is that Bron spends as much time in the paint as the other star wings. Wade shot 674 times in the paint last year. Bron? 685. What adjustment is Shaq going to have to make?

    • Z Posted: Jun.25 at 2:12 pm
Whoops I actually misread and confused percentage with shot attempts. Wade: 674. Bron: 629.

    • WOODY Posted: Jun.25 at 2:13 pm
I hate to restate the obvious, but the Cavs are getting Shaq for one player who’s retiring and Sasha who will probably be bought out. Sasha may well end up in Cleveland again after the Suns cut their losses. The Cavs are basically getting Shaq for nothing but his big salary and that’s only for one year. Count on Ferry buying or trading for a competent PF and probably a taller guard. Next year I see Shaq and Z sharing center minutes, a three man backcourt with Mo, West and a new starter, and Lebron with a new PF as forwards. Varajo and Joe Smith can fill in as needed off the bench or one of the young bigs can get more playing time. After next year, Shaq’s 20 mill could buy a nice center, (maybe Yao). The Cavs have cash now and will have more next year. I’m sure Lebron signed off on Shaq and they’ve always been friendly. Clearly more steps than Shaq will have to be taken to assure that Lebron stays, but, to date, the Cavs seem to be willing to spend whatever it takes.

    • Z Posted: Jun.25 at 2:17 pm
Villanueva campaigning for himself on Twitter: ‘well, twitterland like I said there will be more trades to come, very interesting, Shaq to Cleveland, nice, all Cleveland need is a PF now’

    • Myles Brown Posted: Jun.25 at 2:22 pm
A midrange game gives him more options when Shaq has planted himself on the block, along with his defender. Saying hes getting older is irrelevant? Theyre trading for the 2009 Shaq, who has always been one of questionable work ethic, without the Suns miracle healers. Shaq is around 37,38 years old with a ton of mileage on him. If you think the same Shaq as right now is going to be around next April when hes needed, welll….yeah. Look at every other great center of the past twenty plus years and when they started to break down. Olajuwon, Ewing, Robinson. Shaq is not immune. And hes not going to change who he is either. So Cleveland didnt give up anything in teerms of talent or cap space, but they may have given up something in team chemistry. The first thing hes going to do is guarantee a chip. Then hes going to talk about teaching Bron and making him better. Then hes going to demand the ball. Then he going to start making subtle jabs at any and everyone in an attempt to absolve himself of any blame should things go wrong. Forgive me for sounding jaded, but Ive seen this movie too many times to expect something new.

    • Allenp Posted: Jun.25 at 2:25 pm
Why are people ignoring the fact that finding as quality wing player in the NBA is like finding a gential wart on Paris Hilton?
And why are we pretending that Lebron can’t play with shaq clogging the lane?
Has anybody watched Ben Wallace and Anderson Varejo play? Did y’all forget how DWade got to the paint just fine against the Mavs.
Shaq plays low post defense. He reduces big Z’s minutes. Once the Cavs get 2/3 who can defend and hit the three occasionally, they will match up with all the top teams in the East.

    • bike Posted: Jun.25 at 2:26 pm
Cleveland’s gonna be a freak show. They ought to come up with a play where Shaq…acting like a center in football..clears out the lane and LeBron uses him as a launch pad to put down the most outrageous dunk in the history of basketball. Assuming, of course, that Shaq can get his big butt off the bench.

    • Allenp Posted: Jun.25 at 2:27 pm
      Myles
You are absolutely right about the pattern of Shaq’s behavior.
      He’s followed that pattern everywhere.
And everywhere outside of Phoenix, they went to the Finals.
      Can’t forget that.

    • Z Posted: Jun.25 at 2:34 pm
There’s a big difference here. 1- There will be no teaching, there will be no big brother thing like in Orlando, LA and MIA. Even Wade wasn’t really Wade before Shaq got there. He’s coming into town with an already established superstar. This is Jame’s state. He is Ohio. 2- I think we can all agree that Bron is a very, very willing passer. He has no problem giving it up to freaking Sideshow Bob down low. Why would he b!tch about giving Shaq his touches? That’s EXACTLY what they want. Shaq will get the ball early and often, Bron is not a gunner. 3- Shaq WILL complain somewhere along the road. That’s part of the package deal. Like Sheed with the techs. As long as he delivers what he was brought for. No biggie.

Ok seriously One athletic wingman to help ease off extra duties of LeBron will make this all come together for the cavs

    • Myles Brown Posted: Jun.25 at 2:55 pm
I havent forgotten. Not have I forgotten that Shaq was a part of the biggest regression of a championship team in league history in Miami and that Phoenix didnt even make the playoffs. Im not trying to completely denigrate Shaq, Im just saying that the results from the last few seasons have not been encouraging and hes getting older everyday. The playoffs dont start for another ten months from now, is he going to be stronger/better by then?

    • Co Co Posted: Jun.25 at 2:58 pm
      whoops my bad.

    • Z Posted: Jun.25 at 3:04 pm
No need to be better or stronger. Just as strong will be fine. He won’t play a ton of minutes for the Cavs during the reg season, they don’t need him to. He’ll prolly sit some back to backs. They will win 60+ again. They need him healthy and rested for the playoffs. That’s it. / Shaq is about the only thing that went right for PHX last year and he made the all-star team and the 3d nba team. Old or not, he’s the 3rd best center in the NBA. Fact.

    • Allenp Posted: Jun.25 at 3:13 pm
      Myles
You raise great points about what Shaq will have at the end of the season.
I think the Cavs will shift Z to the bench, and maybe try to follow the Suns lead in giving Shaq rest of back to backs. I would at least. That way, Z’s playing time isn’t cut as drastically and you rest the big fella.
I would hope the Cavs are looking at Ariza. That’s where I would be looking right now, and possibly, maybe, considering Rasheed Wallace for one year.

    • wayno Posted: Jun.25 at 4:09 pm
If they get sheed then look out. They’d be a force. That really doesn’t give them much for the future though. I though the whole goal of this offseason for Cleveland was to get players that will help them out now AND later.

    • Stan Posted: Jun.25 at 4:11 pm
Can’t wait for the new season to start, there have been very interesting movements so far. Shaq will be good for the Cavs and I hope that he’ll do well.

About a day ago there reports coming from the Nets owners that Carter didn’t have to be traded. With him gone, who will buy tickets to a Nets game now? They will have trouble averaging 85 ppg next season, but also averaging 10.000 fans I suppose (I’m a Nets fan, but I’m dutch, so I live in The Netherlands and can’t go to games myself). Well, at least now I know for sure that we’ll either end up with Williams or Henderson in the next couple of hours.
