Should Orlando Trade Rafer Alston?

For the sake of team unity (to say nothing of SVG’s confusing rotation), Skip might have to leave town: “The Magic’s first order of business during this all-important offseason must be to do whatever is necessary to get rid of point guard Rafer Alston. You heard me. ‘Skip to My Lou’ must skip outta town if the Magic are to move forward with Jameer Nelson as the starting point guard and de facto leader of the team. Just call it addition by subtraction.”

I guess if you have to sit a whole quarter each game and watch Jameer from the bench, then the writing was on the wall last week

They should have left Skip in H-town. Rockets would have annoyed the Lakers more.

Magic can keep skip if he doesnt mind playing 15 mins a night. Then just trade/waive AJ

  • Gambler

The Knicks can surely use him and it would be great to see Skip back home. He is a veteran and a leader, although a very emotional one. He is tough and no situation gets him rattled..he has dealt with enough off the court..

I’d trade Jameer Nelson, and actually get something good in return. Skip fits better, anyway.

Trade him for a true power forward that can come off the bench. A scrappy defender and rebounder is what Orlando needs.

rainman10, thats what they have Marcin Gortat for.

trade nelson? some guys suffer from amnesia, he was ballin out of control pre-injury. skip has got to go because he won’t sit there pretty with 15 mins a game. not better than nelson but too good to be a backup.

the same thing happened to tj in toronto last year

  • truthteller

    Orlando,keep Rafer Alston!

  • Ranimal

Trade him if you want to rebuild…….when Jameer went down, there wasn’t any championship talk……….Raf, then leads em to the promised land and becomes an experiment……..I digress ……

of course they should trade Alston. Nelson is their starting point guard, and he isn’t going anywhere. Alston is pretty good, and not a back-up point in my opinion.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Alston deserves to be in a situation where he’s the undisputed starter.

Send him to a team who could use a PG. The team that just beat you in the finals. Goodbye Jordan Farmar.

  • The Cool

They need to trade him, for the sake of the future of the team.
Trade him and redick and/or Battie, for cash and a draft pick, that way they can afford to keep Howard, Lewis, Turkoglu, Lee, Nelson, Pietrus and Gortat and Anthony Johnson who are the core and future of the team (except AJ), and then draft an athlete who can make an immediate impact off the bench, maybe a true small forward, Ariza like….or just sign ariza if they can.

They should because even after having him twice good ‘ol Stan doesn’t know how to use him.

I really liked this part of the Sentinel article the best: “Alston, after he was benched for the entire fourth quarter and the overtime period in the Magic’s crushing Game 4 loss to the Lakers, told the Toronto Star he had some friends who ‘were ready to fly in and wring [Van Gundy's] neck.’”

We are going to have a hard team keeping this team together.I really do think turk is leaving. They don’t have the money to give him what he wants and he can get more elsewhere. Alston played great, A little weak towards the end, but JN has the experience with the team and was killin it before the injury. Applause for substitute point guarding. It is a lot harder to do than people think. Imagine coming in as a quarter back mid season in the NFL. Good luck. Great job, but they need the money, and should focus on strong five and prey for no injuries.

The Celtics need a backup point guard. But only if he’s willing to play limited minutes.

  • niQ

i’m pretty sure there are a teams that could use skip as their starting point guards. such as lakers, golden state, mempis, sacramento, minnesota, oklahoma, washington…….

  • Harry

Alston and Nelson will have a difficult time co-existing on this team. Jameer is the better all around guard, but Alston helped get them to the finals. SVG will have to make a decision in order save team morale. “Skip to ma lou” will most likely skip to another team. He was simply an effective a stop gap while Nelson was out. Too bad, now skippy will take his bi-polar act to another team like Charlotte or Memphis.

Just Get Rid Of Rashard & Hedo

@Z: I understand that Jameer is better than Skip, no question…but that’s kind of my point. The Magic were a better team with Skip in the lineup than they were before Nelson got injured. Any team trading for an all-star caliber point guard is going to have to give the Magic something relatively valuable in return.

Nothing rattles him…..unless your looking to win a championship series, and a better PG suits up ahead of you.
Sure send him to NYK, but for nothing less than David Lee, could you imagine “DeeLee” alongside Superman? It would be the all new JUSTICE LEAGUE DC arrivals?!

Bad move trading Alston….You don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone.

Rafer walked in mid season and quarterbacked this team to the finals…..why does everybody have such short memories?????

Orlando plays better in an up tempo pace and although Rafer is not a better player, he is a better point guard than JNelson!!!!!

Unfortunately I believe this trade will hurt the Magic.
