SLAMonline Mock Draft: Jeff Pendergraph, No. 29

The champs welcome a new member to their versatile frontcourt.

by Nima Zarrabi

With the 29th pick in the 2009 SLAMonline Mock Draft, the Los Angeles Lakers select…

Jeff Pendergraph. We are extremely pleased to welcome Jeff to the Laker family. He is a physical and athletic big man that will add depth to our frontcourt. We had a chance to watch Jeff play several times this year, including during the Pac-10 tournament which is held at our arena, Staples Center.

He is a good rebounder and defender and showed improvement on the offensive end each year while at Arizona State. Furthermore, we were very impressed with the fact that he understood his role for his team and never wavered from it. In watching him play this season, I believed he deserved more opportunities offensively but ASU’s offense went through James Harden. He still managed to average over 16 ppg and nearly 9 rebounds.

Another key for us was the fact that Jeff is a high character individual. Our team has incredible chemistry right now. We have a group of guys that truly enjoys being around each other and we must keep that in mind whenever we consider adding a new player to the fold. Jeff is going to fit in nicely with this team.

He is a high energy player, similar to a player we drafted a few years back, Ronny Turiaf. We’re hoping Jeff can make a similar type impact as a backup to Pau and Andrew. Bynum is still growing into his body and injuries have limited him during the past two seasons. We’re hoping he can have a healthy season this year.

Both Josh Powell and DJ Mbenga will be free agents and we would like to re-sign them but we will have to wait and see what their correct market value is before proceeding. Dr. Buss has every Jeff Pendergraphintention of re-signing Lamar Odom and Trevor Ariza. That is our No. 1 priority. They were a crucial component to our success this year and have indicated that they would like to come back. Both men consider Los Angeles to be home.

Another player we gave strong consideration to was Chase Budinger of Arizona. He’s very versatile and someone who could have a strong upside. However, we feel like we may have a somewhat similar player in Adam Morrison and are interested to see what an off-season and training camp in the triangle offense can do for him.

Point guard is another position we looked at but the players we liked at the position were not going to be there at our pick. Jordan Farmar was really coming on prior to his knee injury last year. He still finished strong for us and we feel comfortable with him and Derek Fisher. We would like to re-sign Shannon Brown. He did a nice job in the short amount of time he was with us. He has also indicated that he wants to come back. We will be speaking with him and his agent and will take it from there.

Probably the most boring Draft Pick commentary so far.

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

Adam Morrison is maybe half as athletic as chase budinger.

  • Ken

Yeah, I really don’t see the similarities between Chase and Adam Morrison. Oh, right, they’re both white.

  • somedude

Yeah, how has Chase not been picked yet in this thing, there’s no way he’s lasting past 20 in the real draft.

WHY HASNT TONY DOUGLAS BEEN DRAFTED YET!!!!!! GO NOLES!!!!!!

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the balla

Who? lol And I HOPE we don’t pick Chase, just because the volleyball player can jump doesn’t mean he’ll do anything in the NBA. Let’s trade the pick and trade Adam Morrison to Phoenix for Amare. Move D fish to back up pg, behind Shannon Brown and let Farmar get in where he fits in.

Very nice pick, this guy is a solid player and will be a better than Mbenga basically fron the jump. Looking at his stats the thing that most impressed me was the 60% FG shooting.
And I’ve heard that Buddinger’s stock has been dropping, I’m not surprised, he’s just so passive.

i’m sorry, did i miss something? how come no one drafted james johnson yet?

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the balla

How come no one drafted Kwame Brown yet?

  • Quail

Darren Collison, Toney Douglas, Chase Budinger, Nic Wise, Jodie Meeks, Tyler Smith, Damion James, AJ Abrams, Taylor Griffin and James Johnson are all still left… if this is how it’s really gonna be, the 2nd round will be almost as strong as the first.

  • Richard ESQ

Great pick, Pendergraph outplayed the #5 pick in all 3 games this year. Pendergraph shot 60% with Hill checking him, Hill shot 41% on ASU, JP out rebounded Hill in the three games, and the only reason he didnt out score Hill is because JP played with the biggest ball hog the NCAA has seen since Randolph Childress.

JP is a Powell Turiaf mix, the hussle and D of Turiaf with the offensive game of Powell, mix in some brains as well. A good fit.

The biggest similarity between Morrison and Buddinger is not their skin color, its the fact that they both have skills better suited for the D-League.

James, while you are at it, why dont we trade Sasha to Boston for Ray Allen straight up?

  • LB

Wow. There was a point in time when the media asked when Chase Budinger and Damion James were gonna be lottery picks, not if they were gonna be lottery picks.

  • Wuesso

YES! Finally my Lakers are up! I like this pick. Richard ESQ is a stat machine, nice compillation. Chase Buddinger was an option but JPen is a better fit for the champs. He’s a hard working player. Plus, now LA has 6 more fouls to give on Yao and the other big men. Morrison has game, he just need to work out and train during the summer… the whole summer! No off days for you Adam.

  • http://slamonline.com B. Long

I’d rather take Chase. He reminds of a more athletic Luke Walton.

I learned more about Jeff Pendergraph from Richard ESQ’s blurb than from the original article. Chase Budinger and Morrison are both wings with decent jump shots, but Budinger is a supreme athlete and Morrison is a supreme bust.

I see Budinger developing into the talent level of Pietrus or Quentin Richardson. Opportunity to start on some teams, but either way will always play a nice role. Late first round, a playoff team type pick.
