SLAMonline Mock Draft: Eric Maynor, No. 18
Let’s not pretend I know what I’m doing…
by Myles Brown
As a team in need of a point guard in a point guard heavy draft, perhaps I should’ve selected one with my first pick. I still feel that DeRozan was the best available player, however now that Rubio, Jennings, Curry, Flynn, Holiday and Lawson are gone, I’ve backed myself into the corner of drafting a player that can only start or contribute to my team if I move a flawed player out of position or to one they’re ill suited for. I’ve discussed Randy Foye and Bassy Telfair’s shortcomings ad nauseum. Foye is better off at the two and Bassy is undersized and an inconsistent shooter.
Nevertheless, one of these two will be my starter and this pick is solely for grooming a worthy understudy. I already have a scorer and a distributor, so a reliable shooter will do. Obviously there are other qualities I’m looking for in a point, however as I’ve mentioned, every other player possessing those qualities is already off the board. There’s another problem though. Every player remaining is either another inconsistent shooter or lacks the requisite instincts and IQ.
So, with the 18th pick of the 2009 SLAMonline Mock Draft, the Minnesota Timberwolves select….
*Draws name out of hat*
Eric Maynor, from Virginia Commonwealth University!
Like Telfair, Maynor has a knack for playmaking . He can execute in the halfcourt or in transition. Though he’s another questionable shooter, he finishes in the paint with a vast array of shots that Telfair simply can’t due to his size. He needs to expand his comfort zone, but for now his serviceable midrange game is a noted improvement over Bassy’s. The two of them would frustrate me to no end, but it would still be the lesser of two evils when considering Foye’s erratic decision making. Telfair and Maynor should complement each other and their teammates nicely.
Everyone I wanted was gone, my team has holes at practically every position and I’m making an uninformed decision that could come back to bite me in the ass. Now I know how McHale felt all these years.
Actually, that’s not fair. I didn’t trade away Brandon Roy and O.J. Mayo.
I kid, I kid.
