Trade: Jason Kapono for Reggie Evans

by Marcel Mutoni

According to the Globe and Mail in Toronto, the Raptors are about to ship off Jason Kapono (and the $12 million left on his contract over the next two seasons) to Philly in exchange for Reggie Evans. Reggie has about $10 mil over two years left on his deal.

The trade will be announced this afternoon, sayeth the Globe.

Bryan Colangelo said one of his goals this off-season was to make his team tougher. He just did, the Globe and Mail has learned.

According to NBA sources the team is expected to announce this afternoon a deal sending sharp-shooter Jason Kapono to the Philadelphia 76ers for bruising forward Reggie Evans.

Reggie’s now former teammate, Andre Iguodala, doesn’t sound too broken up about losing him to Toronto. He’s more than thrilled to get a shooter of Kapono’s caliber. Via AI 9′s Twitter page:

BIG NEWS COMING FROM PHILLY IN ABOUT 30 MIN!!!!!!!!!!! YALL SAID WE NEED A SHOOTER, WELL HOW ABOUT THIS GUY??? STAY TUNED….

Iggy is in for a disappointment. Kapono shoots well in the 3 point contest, but jacks up a lot of clunkers when it counts.

A trade! I was interested in this story…then I found out it was between the raptors and sixers. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

So what was the point in trading away Korver over a year ago? Aren’t him and Kapono the same player?

  • Ajo

great trade. the Sixers desperately needed a reliable 3 point shooter. Kapono had a bad shooting year last year, but you can trust he’ll shake the rust off next year. Great pick up, now they can worry about a big in the draft rather than a shooter. I say they go get BJ Mullens.

  • Khalid Salaam

Eh….if kapono can revert back to his pre-raptors ability cool. if not it sucks. its worth the risk though.

i always liked reggie evans, cant score at all. but the rebounding and the ugliness that he brings makes a difference. im assuming his minutes would go down next year anyway with brand and jason smith back and the emergence of speights….also, i always thought that u couldn’t trade until after the playoffs were done.

This Is a yawn of a trade

Iguodala should definitely be happy. They lose intensity, but they *sorely* needed someone who could put the ball in from long range.

why the hell do the raptors want Reggie Evans!?

  • Sparker

sorry, dre… kapono wasn’t much of a contributor to the raptors. he did add a floater to his arsenal, but he shot the 3 much less well than advertised, complained due to lack of minutes and was a gaping hole in the defense whenever he was on the floor. most amazingly, he’s 6’8″ but couldn’t grab a rebound even if it landed on his coiffed dome. bring on wedgie and his hustle

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Jason Kapono is NOT that dude. Trust, I get every Raptors game. The percentage is nice but he will give you one 3 a game and that’s it. People forget that you actually need to get open to be able to launch it. For some reason, Kapono doesn’t really move well with the drives so he’s never open when you want to kick it out to him. Just watch next year, Sixers fans. I’ll be WILDLY impressed if he cracks 100 makes. Take a look at his career numbers. This changes NOTHING, nothing at all.

Now trade Evans for someone making $8 mil over two years, and then trade THAT guy for someone making $6 mil over two years…

I see where Colangelo is going with this!

The 76′ers needed some perimeter shooting… desperately. And if Reggie can keep his nut grabbing activities to a minimum this could help both teams:

I’m so exited by this trade !!! (sarcasm)

  • http://www.fanballers.com so fresh n so clean

I think it’s a good trade for both sides…I mean it won’t guarantee more wins..but Philly needed a reliable spot up shooter and Toronto needs toughness and rebounding.

Kapono is great as a spot up shooter, Toronto just didn’t have the guys that could drive and dish with the best of them.

Evans was top ten in rebounding per 48 over the last six years..

I think it’s a win-win…the raps need delfino back though.

Works for both sides, especially Philly though. Kapono has underwhelmed recently but there’s no questions about his shooting. PLus, moving evans opens up more minutes for Speights.
Evans is a hard worker and rebounder who can bring some tougness to the TDot…

Surely Chris Bosh will stay in Toronto for the rest of his career now!

  • Josh D

Philly definetly got the better end of the deal

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

now why did i think trades couldnt happen until AFTER the nba finals??

  • http://nationofmillions.ca ciolkstar

^I sort of thought the same thing, RV…

  • seven deuce

I think Philly came up on this one. Kapono doesn’t need to score double every night, just drop a couple 3′s. Unlike in Toronto, there are at least 3 real scoring threats on the 76′s that will take pressure off him.

  • Fat Lever

Instead of Iguodala being (super)excited for getting a shooter, shouldn’t he be working on his shot so he can (kind of) be that guy?

  • underdog

Let Korver walk was an amazing idea in the first place…

  • Young C

I like this trade for Philly. It doesnt really affect their salary cap, but it rids them of an extra big that they really didnt need. Kapono may have dissappointed Toronto this year, but realistically, who was there to create shots for him this year? Iguodala, Young, Brand, Williams and maybe Miller will create much more space with their penetration and playmaking than Toronto did. I will miss Reggie”s beard though

  • James aka…

and so ends the popular career of Pops Mensa-Bonsu, Raptor rebounding god (says something about our frontline Ach–Bargnani–oo)

  • Nick Adams

ummm … as a Raps fan, not impressed. Perhaps good financially. JK could have been more effective if he had someone to get him shots, & Reggie Evans grabs more nuts than boards.

    what the hell is this?

  • thesubwayconnection

For those who asked if Korver and Kapono are the same player – Korver’s better off the dribble. Thanks, Colangelo for getting rid of him.

decent trade for both sides – raps get a rebounder, sixers get a shooter

KAREEM RUSH. he’s the shooter they have, but never play

  • Young C

Kareem Rush is barely a basketball player, let alone a shooter

    Young C: +1

  • Teddy-the-Bear

NICE! Great move for the Raptors. Reggie Evans brings toughness and hard work… I hope. And physicality.
I don’t want to bash Kapono because he’s a nice guy, but if Philly really thinks they got the upper hand…

  • Teddy-the-Bear

WOW. How can a Raptors fan NOT be pleased with this trade? We don’t even have a legitimate interior defender. My goodness.
Also, people PLEASE stop calling Toronto T-Dot. Just call it Toronto. T-Dot is the name given by the horrible rappers like Belly and Kardinall Offishall…

  • Teddy-the-Bear

    Co-sign Mo Cho.
How can a Raptors fan NOT be happy with this?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Mr.GOODE

this is all to freee up minutes.for delfino or possibly the draft pick…plus delfino plays some D

  • vmcb

As a Raptors fan, this is solid. Kapono did nothing off the bench and Evans gives the Raps a interior defender and rebounder who won’t ask for offensive touches. I sort of like Kardinall Offishall.

  • http://slamonline.com s.e.a.n

As a Raptors fan, this trade is turrible.

  • EJ Wizzle

Tdotters should be happy with this move. They get interior toughness and rebounding, while losing that contract, for a player that never did fit in with the team. I thought we would never lose that contract he has so under-achieved. Catch ya on the flipside, J.Killa

  • http:///www.twitter.com/TheDiesel Anton

This trade > the NBA finals

  • http://www.hoopsmanifesto.blogspot.com Jeff Fox

In the Amish facial hair category, this trade is a steal for the Raptors.

  • JoeMaMa

The peanut gallery needs to stop with the sarcastic (read: stupid) comments. This trade gives the Raptors toughness, attitude, and some one to come in for some rebounds. Raps fan have GOTTA LOVE this trade. I should know, I’ve been reppin’ them since V. Esposito.

  • niQ

for a rebounder he may be good, but he plays the same position as bosh. and we already have kris humphries for that….
