Welcome to a Subdued Free Agency Period
The summer of 2009 doesn’t hold a lot of promise for free agents: “The summer before the Summer of LeBron will not be quite so glorious. A variety of factors — including a poor economy, weak season-ticket sales, a declining salary cap and the LeBron sweepstakes itself — could conspire to make this an unhappy off-season for most free agents. Only four teams are expected to have significant salary-cap space, and not all are expected to use it. Most teams can spend their so-called midlevel exception — about $5.6 million — but most of them probably will not.”

No, I’m not dumb. I’m aware that Fish hit those two clutch 3s. Does that outweigh everything else he brings to the table? Do we say “Oh, Fish hits big shots, so we’re good with him at the point”? I disagree with that reasoning. In fact, that seems like a pretty lame line of thinking. Fish is a good guy to have in the locker room, but if he’s your STARTING PG, then that means that you’re OK with getting absolutely abused by the Aaron Brooks and Tony Parkers of the world. Fish should come off the bench, hit a few shots, and then sit the f*ck down.
Now I know that the Lakers won the ‘chip this year with Fisher as their starting PG, but things could have been different if Yao and Mac had been healthy the way Aaron Brooks was having his way with Fisher in the Houston series. Or if Garnett were healthy and they faced Boston in the Finals and Fisher had to guard Rondo. Or if Fisher had to guard a healthy Jameer Nelson. But they won and that’s all that matters. I’m glad they won. That doesn’t mean there aren’t GLARING flaws in the team that should be looked at. Plus, Fisher was shooting something like 28% from 3-point range in the playoffs. He SUCKED. Don’t get me wrong, those two 3s in Game 4 were HUGE, but to absolve him of all his sins because of TWO SHOTS seems foolhardy to me. Why can’t he make those shots as a sub? Why does he have to be such a liability? It seems obvious to me that the Lakers need to address their PG situation. So that really only leaves one question: Are you dumb?
I think Charlie V is going to Motown.
he outplayed every other guard on the Magic roster….
crazy. y’all crazy.
“He outplayed every other guard on the Magic roster”…
I beg to differ…
First off,
JVG totally f*cked up the rotation. And when he gave Skip a chance, Skip KILLED Fish. He murdered him. But for some reason Van Gundy inexplicably benched him and went back to Nelson, who hadn’t played since February. Good call, Coach. And bear in mind that we’re not talking about a really good player here. We’re talking about Rafer Alston who was killing Fisher.
Secondly, to go back to you’re “he outplayed every other Magic guard” statement, Mickeal Pietrus is a guard, and I maintain that Fisher did NOT outplay Pietrus. I understand that they didn’t play against each other, but Fisher didn’t have a better series. If you want to boil it down to those two 3-pointers, go ahead. Pietrus was inconsistent in his scoring, but he did a hell of a job on Kobe. Fisher can only dream about that kind of D. And he had good scoring nights in Games 1,3 and 4. So, I’d say Pietrus, overall, played much better than Fisher, whose only contribution to the Lakers throughout the ENTIRE PLAYOFFS were those two admittedly monumental three-pointers.
But I can’t understand this logic… I concede the fact that Fisher is a clutch shooter. In fact, I conceded it BEFORE he hit those two against Orlando. But is that enough of a contribution out of your starting point guard? I don’t think so.
What else did Fisher contribute? Not just in the Finals but throughout the entire Playoffs?
Now think of how much of a defensive liability he is.
