Where’s Rubio?

The T-Wolves are holding a presser to showcase their draft picks today. There’s one noticeable absence, but their GM (Kahnnn!!!!!!!!!) says not to worry about it: “The Timberwolves will hold a 3 p.m. news conference today to introduce first-round draft choices Jonny Flynn of Syracuse and Wayne Ellington of North Carolina. No. 1 pick Ricky Rubio won’t be in attendance. Wolves president of basketball of operations David Kahn, through a team spokesman, cautioned not to read anything into that, but there are plenty of questions about whether Rubio will end up signing with and playing for Minnesota this season or return to his Spanish team.”

I’m Ricky Rubio, I’m not like anyone else.

I get drafted high in the first round just to show y’all that I can! And I’m still getting back to Catalan!!

    Ya diggo!

  • http://www.jchtv.com iconjohn

I was a real big fan of Rubio, but not so much anymore. Let his madre take his ass back to Europe. If he ever comes to Philly I’ll be jeering not cheering. En Espanol!

  • http://tygr20.com tygr20

@Mo Charlo: but he’s not like such as a US American, or from the Iraq, so I know he has like such as a map

  • Tenorca

    A Philly fan jeering? Inconceivable.
    Man up Rubio.

  • http://nationofmillions.ca Ciolkstar

Rubio is a little b1tch. I hate him so much that its actually starting to freak me out a little.

  • http://slamonline.com B. Long

Here’s my take on the whole Rubio situation. He’s 18 yrs. old and he’s been playing pro ball for about 5 yrs. now. He’s not 7 feet tall and he’s not ridiculously athletic, so basicly he’s been busting his ass playing ball just to have the opportunity in front of him. He hasn’t been handed anything, he has earned it. That being said, I don’t agree with whining your way out of a NBA franchise that drafts you. I think he should man up and play ball, regardless of how horribly run that organization is. But even if he b!tches out and doesn’t show up, I don’t think its a reason to just vehemently hate the kid and act like he’s everything wrong with sports. In all honesty there isn’t a big difference between what Brandon Jennings did last season with the NCAA and what Rubio’s doing with the NBA. He’s making the decison that best suits his wants and needs and those of his family. And although I don’t nessciarily agree with that decision, I’m okay with it.

Why are we mad at him again? They want him, but he doesn’t want them, so we get angry? I mean, just because they offer, does that mean he is the devil for not accepting?

CO-SIGN B LONG a thousand times. Rubio has busted his a&& to play at a high level and he’s making hard decisions. He did enter the draft though, and really should play, with big smile on his face, for the team that drafted him.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

    S. Trotter: Could you IMAGINE if Jennings didn’t show up at Milwaukee’s press conference? Oh my. I think Jay Bilas would actually knife him or something.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Fvckouttahere with that busted his a– bullsh!t. They ALL busted their a–es and that’s why they’re getting drafted in the NBA now. PGs with the bodytype and athletic abilities of Flynn and Lawson are a dime a dozen. They fought for their shot at the NBA and prove doubters wrong just like Rubio did. Get your a– in Minny and ball out of your mind. In 4 years, you’ll decide where you want to go. Just like everybody else. Just like the actual #1 pick. Think he wanted to play for the sorry Clips?!

  • http://www.sonicbids.com/shaemorin doyouwantmore

On second thought, no one should judge the kid. Who here has had to pay six-million bucks out of their own pocket to play for a crappy team and MAYBE make some money in about four years.

  • http://dillanleuyahoo.com Holy Baller

I agree with everything you said Z, except for the fact that I don’t really think BJ Mullens busted anything to get where he is. I mean dude didn’t even start in college. Talk about drafted too high…..I was mad when my Thunder picked the European guy, but then even madder when they traded for Mullens. Stupid stupid stupid……

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

doyouwantmore, the issues are unrelated. he WILL pay the buyout regardless of whether he plays in minnesota or sacramento. he won’t get out of his rookie contract before 2013 regardless of whether he plays in minnesota or sacramento. they are BOTH crappy teams. now you want me to feel bad for him because it’s cold in minny? gtfoh.

  • ciroqobama

    Rubio is punk b!tch

  • Allgood

What does it matter if it’s cold here or not? Buy a f’ing jacket. And you play indoors in a heated arena. It’s not like you’re gonna be playing for the Twins outdoors in April… Which still wouldn’t even be that cold…

  • http://slamonline.com B. Long

Considering Flynn has the highest vertical leap in the draft(or at least out of the pgs?) I don’t consider that dime a dozen type skill. And guess what Z? Flynn and Ty can both go play overseas and earn a decent living if they chose too. There is no law saying you have to play in the nba if you get drafted. Nick Calathes has already signed a deal with Greece. Are we so sure he’s gonna be suiting up for the L-Wolve’s point guard orgy too? Why isn’t everyone losing their mind about that? Again, I’m not saying I agree with the decision, I’m just saying that the hate is a little overboard. Have some perspective.

  • http://nationofmillions.ca Ciolkstar

Flynn had a 40″ vert, highest in the players who partook in the combine, though I think Beaubois would give him a run for his money. His size is a disadvantage but he’s definitely not a dime a dozen. In reality, Rubio isn’t worth getting all worked up about. He’ll get traded and wow people with great passes, and get absolutely annihilated when he tries to guard basically any NBA point guards.
He needs to land somewhere where defnse is not a priority to not suck.
I hated (and sorta still hate) Eli Manning when he blackballed teams in the draft and now Rubio is doing the same thing, but worse because he’s balking on teams he didn’t even mention not wanting to play for.
Unrelated: Anyone know if Josh Heytvelt is gonna sign anywhere? I still think thats the guy who would fit best in SA’s frontcourt, but I do really like Blair, especially at 37.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

  • http://www.oprah.com doyouwantmore

I didn’t say anything about the stupid cold weather. I couldn’t agree more. I’m just saying the kid isn’t Hitler because he’s making some difficult decisions. Blame his parents, blame his agent, blame Joventut, blame the contract, but don’t be an a&&hole to some kid you don’t even know.

  • jumpman3224

B.Long – Obviously Rubio was 17, but in two head to head meeting Paul nearly doubled him in points (27-14), more than doubled him in assists (13 – 6) and had half as many turnovers (3 – 6) maybe thats not getting annihilated but just looking at the numbers it for sure wasnt a push….just sayin’.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

why would i blame everyone else but him? that doesn’t even make sense. i know 2 guys that are playing in the nba, does that mean i can’t comment on anyone else?

  • jumpman3224

they also played comparable minutes and rubio started more of those games than paul did

  • Nick Adams

Rubio should be pissed – he’s thinking: “you draft me, than another PG at 6, & I have to pay my club millions of my own $ to get out of my contract to come freeze my nuts off in Minny & maybe not play? Do you want me or Jonny Flynn? Are you picking me just to trade me or what?”

  • Teddy-the-Bear

I can’t wait to watch Brandon Jennings eat this guy alive on the court. Oh will that be sweet.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

I feel kind of bad for him, though, now that people are starting to dislike him.
On a side note: IF ONLY JENNINGS WAS ON MY KNICKS. F*CK WHY DID YOU HAVE TO SUCK THIS DRAFT DONNIE?

  • http://dsfkl.com Jukai

Teddy: didn’t happen in Europe, wont happen in America.

  • NBA kid

    jumpman:
So rubio gets half of pauls stats as a 17 year old. If he keeps that up, 11 and 6 then as an 18 year old rookie for a season is still pretty good.

  • NBA kid

    jumpman:

  • Esco

Chris Paul was also playing with many other All-Stars. In NOLA CP3 is the man, he won’t be as passive as he was in the Olympics on offense. BAD example. In the Olympics his job was to get the ball to Kobe, LeBron and Wade. In NOLA his job is to get his. Rubio will get annihilated by Paul, Williams and the likes.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

jukai knows very well that jennings was playing off the ball and didnt have any freedom to take it to rubio in that one game. he also knows that jennings will have the ball in his hands from day 1 in milwaukee and will iso and pick n roll to death. there is no rookie out there that can stay in front of him. none.

  • http://www.anwilson.blogspot.com rainman10

@ Z, if only Brandon was up against rookies every game….

  • http://fjdkslf.com Jukai

Esco: Wow, so an 18-year-old Rubio will get annihilated by the best two point guards in the game. Crazy.
Z: Rubio was also playing with an absolutely broken wrist. Rubio will now be able to use his dinosauric reach to his full potential on Jennings. I’m not saying Jennings wont burn Slick Ricky once or twice, but don’t overdo it here.
Rubio was the DPOY for the ACB. I know the rule system over here is muchos different, but let’s not go crazy here, Rubio isn’t Calderon, he’s going to be able to hold Jennings on most plays.
I get it, Rubio has turned into a huge douchebag. He’s spoiled and a liar. Why can he suddenly not play the game of basketball anymore?

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Why do people always act like Rubio was SO GOOD in the Olympics? HE WASN’T. Check the stats, he had 8 points and 3 assists… He was practically starting that game! And B. Long, he wasn’t getting owned by Chris Paul because Paul was passing it to Kobe and LeBron and Wade, etc. Anyhow, Paul still got better stats that game, while playing eve LESS minutes than Rubio.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

    even*

  • http://fjdkslf.com Jukai

Teddy: Rubio shattered his wrist in the first quarter of the final game and needed massive surgery that took him out of the game for months… check the other games for a better comparison of Rubio’s stats.
Also, research just a -little- bit to find out common information.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

@ Jukai: My point exactly, actually. If Rubio was injured during the game against USA, why do people keep using THAT EXACT GAME as an example of his ability, like its some amazing showcase of talent? People keep saying how well he played against the US and that he’s NBA ready because of it…

  • JoeMaMa

I think the many NBA scouts who drool over him and his abilities may’ve seen him play slightly more than us. If Jennings was better, he wouldn’t have to say it, it would be obvious to the multi million dollar pro-ball scouting business.
And if I was a top baller in my own country at 18 (and likely getting more a*s than the Dos Equis guy), why would I possibly go to a frozen city to compete with another point guard to see who can quarterback the most losses??
    KAHNNNNNNNNN!!!!!

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Joe, you are a complete and utter idiot. Please shut up. Thanks in advance.

  • http://fjdkslf.com Jukai

Yes Joe, how dare you speak the truth.

  • http://fjdkslf.com Jukai

Teddy: People only use that game to show how he didn’t get killed by Jason Kidd or Chris Paul or Deron Williams. Show me where someone uses that game to make a point about Rubio’s offensive skill. Link me to it and I’ll apologize.

  • jaumemont

He really wants play in NBA and I’m a sure that the cold is not a big problem for him. The main thing is the money that he has to pay to his team in Europe as a byout 6 million dollars. With the 5th pick he dosen’t have enouhg money to pay and maybe with a trade a team like the nicks with biger market have the chance to pay that money with commercial contracts. If he is going to the t-wolves this year maybe he will need to work in a Mcdonals after the games to live and pay his rent.
He is negociating with his spanish team to reduce his byout and come to the NBA but the DKV joventut don’t want lost money and his best player. So will see what happens.
So T-wolves and American fans don’t get upset and let him try to have the oportunity to play in NBA without that pressure. If he has to stay one year more in Spain to go free to NBA let him do it.
This way at least we can enjoy one year more live (belive me) the best point guard that I have seen.

    Best

  • http://www.oprah.com doyouwantmore

    1. Guys who can jump high and have big muscles are a dime-a-dozen. You know why they don’t all make it in the NBA? Because they don’t know how to play basketball. Rubio on the other hand has the court vision of a veteran already. You can’t teach what he has.
    2. I heard JJ Redick has a pretty good jumpshot, but it hasn’t helped him too much.
    3. Brandon Jennings is the next Randy Woods. Do you remember Randy Woods?
    4. People are calling the kid some pretty nasty names because of his situation in the draft. Regardless of opinion, he still has to pay six-million dollars out of his own pocket to play in the NBA. You have never had to deal with that situation, so shut up.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

^ I disagree. Brandon Jennings > Ricky Rubio. Ricky is a good passer, yes. But what else does he do? What else can the kid realistically do? His handles aren’t even that great, he’s not unbelievably fast, he’s not very athletic, he can’t hit a jumpshot at all, he’s definitely not strong… What’s the point of him having court vision when he won’t have the ability to maneuver around and USE his “court vision” that effectively in the NBA? Even if he gets around 5-10 assists a game, so what? He’ll be getting like 3-5 points a game and 2 rebounds. Big deal.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Anyways, Jukai, you could be right about people using the Olympics as a showcase for his “not getting killed by NBA point guards”.. but I’m pretty sure I saw somewhere people saying how he schooled up Chris Paul, which is complete BS. Maybe I can find a link to a comment later. Maybe I’m just imagining things, but I doubt it… Those types of comments happened a while ago.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Rubio is a product of HYPE. I’m sorry, but this friggin’ kid is supposed to be the second coming of the one-and-only PISTOL PETE? This is an exaggeration, but remember what people were saying about Darko before he was drafted? Yeah.

  • http://fjdkslf.com Jukai

Uh, did you say Rubio has no handles? Teddy, you’ve pretty much lost all credibility. Rubio has better ball handling skills than 95% of the NBA right now, and it is the ONLY THING that could make Rubio a star without a jump shot, his ONLY asset (outside of his court vision) which could give him that jump to stardom in the NBA. I really can’t believe you said that. That’s like saying Kobe is overrated, dude’s jumper isn’t all that good.
And enough about the Pistol Pete nonsense! The dude has NOT BEEN COMPARED TO PISTOL PETE SINCE HE WAS 16! Peter saw him on youtube, he was white with floppy hair throwing showtime passes, and everyone said “IT’S THE PISTOL!” Two years later, people actually know his game, and no one mentions Maravich when they talk about Rubio.
Darko and Rubio were completely different. Darko was recognized as a project who would take time to fully develop, Rubio is expected to produce right off the bat.
I CANNOT believe you said Rubio had no handles.

  • http://fjdkslf.com Jukai

Also, If rubio averages double digit assists his first year, he easily gets ROY. Besides Action Jackson (who I think was 23), has there ever been a rookie to come in and average double digit assists? Off-hand, I know Magic didn’t, Oscar didn’t, Gary didn’t, Tiny didn’t, Cousy didn’t, Isiah didn’t…

Jukai, I was actually refering this ^. But yeah, he will get annihilated.

  • http://www.twahc.blogspot.com twahc

gasol brothers should teach him a lesson or two.

  • Public Defender

As for his talent, he was 17 in the gold medal game, and he sustained an injury, and he still made Jason Kidd look bad. Remember when Kobe was 18 and looking totally lost throwing up airballs in the playoff loss to the Jazz? Rubio is a prodigy. Barring serious injury he will be a great player.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

@ Jukai: Okay, I exaggerated about the handles. He has handles. But he doesn’t have Brandon Jennings handles.
And I was saying best-case scenario, not right off the bat. Rubio is not getting double digit assists right off the bat, nowhere near it; especially playing alongside Flynn. I’m saying IF one day, Rubio gets to be a starter and THE point guard, and gets to handle the ball for like 30+ minutes a game, he might come close. He’s still not going to be as good as Jose Calderon, pretty much ever.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Hey Jukai, there’s the post right there. By Public Defender, RIGHT THERE.
“he sustained an injury, and he still made Jason Kidd look bad.”
Tell me how the frick he made Jason Kidd look bad?? By not getting totally owned? Come on now, these comments have been made before. And they’re annoying.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

In my opinion, Rubio is going to be a bust or a mediocre player. If he proves me wrong, I’ll admit it.

  • http://fjdkslf.com Jukai

Teddy: Look dude, just stop it. You’re being insane. It’s clear you don’t really have a strong grasp of Rubio, dude. Will he be a bust? Yes, it’s entirely possible, if he never develops a jumper and puts on some muscle to his frame. I think he’s as GOOD as Calderon right now, so, yeah, I don’t think he’ll ever be worse than Calderon.
But there are two things you are so VASTLY wrong on, I’m wondering if you’re pulling an Eboy and just saying stupid things to incite people.
1- “Rubio has no handles” STOP SAYING THIS. RUBIO HAS BETTER HANDLES THAN 95% OF THE NBA! JENNINGS DOESN’T EVEN HAVE HALF THE BALL HANDLING SKILLS AND BALL CONTROL THAT RUBIO HAS!
    Cap lock!
This is like saying Kobe has no jumper! This is like saying Lebron has no strength and that Monte Ellis guy sucks because he’s slow! It makes you look insane!
Look, I think Jennings has insane handles for a kid his age, at the Jordan Classic he was splitting dudes and crossing them out and he never took his eyes off the ball. Rubio does all this and more every day in a professional league!!! This is the only way Rubio can score buckets without speed and an outside shot! I can’t believe you would say something so heinously dumb, normally I’d just flat out ignore you but people are so clueless about Rubio, I don’t want them reading your crap and thinking it as fact!
So to clarify: Rubio’s handles are ungodly.
    2) “Rubio is a terrible defender.” Now I’m not going to chew you up on this, kid, because a lot of people are suddenly declaring Rubio to be a horrible defender. I was wondering if something changed, so I checked Scout.com and Draftexpress to see if he really WAS a bad defender. What I saw was: ‘good ability to contest shots’ ‘amazing in the pass lanes’ ‘great defensive awareness’ ‘great off ball defender.’
    Hohum.
So, suddenly an 18-year-old kid who was the defensive player of the year in Europe is going to be getting burned by every person in the NBA. And hey, I’m not denying that Paul/Deron wont drop 30 on him, Rose wont drop 22, Harris may have a 40-point game on him! But saying Brandon Jennings, who people don’t if he’ll ever start? You kidding me? This kid was the BEST DEFENDER IN ALL OF SPAIN. I don’t think he’ll come in shutting dudes down, but to say he’s a bad defender defies common logic. He’s got long arms and very sharp lateral speeds and GREAT defensive IQ. He isn’t quick in a sprint but he’s very fast moving his feet from side to side. It doesn’t make sense for people to start considering him a bad defender and I don’t know where it is coming from.
Once again, it is okay to hate Ricky Rubio. He’s been a huge prick throughout the draft process. But -STOP LYING ABOUT HIS SKILLSET-
A lot of people are reading it and thinking it is fact

  • http://fjdkslf.com Jukai

Teddy: feel free to correct public defender. He did burn Jason Kidd in two consecutive plays but THEN hurt his hand and pretty much didn’t play very well for the rest of the game.

  • http://staticseth.blogspot.com/ Seth

Dear Minnesota, you have Jonny Flynn. Please give what Ricky Rubio he wants and let him play elsewhere. I hear New York is interested, so why not cut a deal with them? Give the fans (heck, even the players) what they want – to see Rubio in the NBA. It would be such a tease to see him return to Europe. Kind regards, Seth.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Are you serious? Rubio is already as good as Calderon? How can Rubio be a bust then, if Calderon is already near-All-star caliber? Are you telling me Rubio is going to get 8 assists per game his rookie year?

So if you can choose between two options I´m sure that pay 6,6 $ millions from your pocket to have the honor of play in the L-Wolwes (earning 2,2 millions in two years) instead of wait two years (and save 4,4 $ millions) isn´t the smart one, and I can´t believe that all of you will decide to pay that amount of money to play in Minny (remember than in two years he´ll only be 20 y.o.)

  • rav

real madrid apparently have made an offer to rubio, so it looks like he has another option besides joventut, and he’d likely get similar pay in madrid than he would in the NBA plus living in a much more attractive city

  • http://www.sportweek.fr LexaB

OK lets cut to the point. Ricky is choosen by the T-Wolves. The next pick they choose Flynn, like a slap in the head, like a “ok we want you little Ricky but we dont really trust you becoming THAT good so lets increase our odds of having a great point guard by picking Flynn” kind of move. Now lets get inside Rubio’s mind. You’re a star in your country. One of the two biggest teams right there, Real Madrid, is making a move to get you and give you big contract for next year. Would you really choose the T-Wolves instead??? It may be a shocker for all of you, as b-ball world ends in Oregon or Florida for most people on that site, but playing for Real Madrid may be better than playing for the PG-loaded T-Wolves right now. And thats a fact for sure. No the NBA is not the only dream of every kid on this planet. No playing for a team where he has no future is not the only dream for the best prospect coming from Europe since ages (RIP Drazen Petrovic). No he is not a b*tch just because he makes you all remember NBA is not the only place in the world where we play b-ball. And I’m not even talking about all that money he’s got to pay to come. Seriously… in Ricky’s boots, would you pay to play for the T-Wolves WITH Flynn in the roster??? Rubio is a great player, seen him live at least twenty times and he’s NBA ready. But he is also an intelligent kid, playing professionnel for 4 years and aware of a lot of things happening around him. And Russ I mostly love everything you write. But Steve Francis??? The translation from Ricky Rubio??? Come on man. Not even close to the point.

  • http://dsfkl.com Jukai

“No the NBA is not the only dream of every kid on this planet”
I disagree: if you are not aiming for the NBA, you are not aiming high enough. Really. Ask any European star, if they’d rather be a star in the NBA.
And while you’re 100% right about the T-Wolves situation and what a d*ck move it was for them, you have to realize that Ricky Rubio MADE HIS BED: he openly bad mouthed Memphis, gave OKC the cold shoulder EVEN WHEN THEY WERE BEGGING HIM TO WORK OUT, and was a real hard ass with Sacremento (refused to do a lot of work-out stuff, gave very enigmatic responses about his abilities, didnt’ give guarentees about playing or anything). He could have gone two but HE HIMSELF got him into this situation.
Now he’s gotta sleep in that bed.
I’m tired of people starting to knock on Rubio’s abilities, as if him being a total pr*ck means he suddenly has lost his game… but this whole matter is entirely Rubio’s fault, and he SHOULD be compared to Kobe and Yi and Francis and all those d**ches who decided they were bigger and better than the system and could decide where they wanted to play.
    Capish?

  • http://www.sportweek.fr LexaB

Agree with you on those points. If you’re not aiming for the NBA, you’re not aiming high enough, indeed. I was just trying to explain that for a spanish kid like Rubio, returning to play in sunny Spain is not a nightmare. That kid loves to play there. But you’re right, he made his own bed and he’s gotta live with that. I just want people to wait a little before bitching a kid that made his own bed but still doesnt want to sleep in it. He tried something it didn’t work. But do you feel like he would have done the same if the T-Wolves would not have picked Flynn JUST after him??? I dont think so.
To compare him with Francis for the “I’m bigger than the system” is good. But they’re not the same players at all. Not at all. And people may hate him now, but I’ll still say it : Rubio is a mature kid. More than everybody think. He knew what he was doing since the start, believe me. I wouldn’t say the same about the guy that had that brilliant idea in the T-Wolves staff : “Now that we got Rubio, lets pick Flynn, not trade Ricky and see how all that mess ends up”. Really. Some brilliant move there.

  • http://www.sportweek.fr LexaB

Agree with you on those points. If you’re not aiming for the NBA, you’re not aiming high enough, indeed. I was just trying to explain that for a spanish kid like Rubio, returning to play in sunny Spain is not a nightmare. He likes to play there and he wont leave JUST for the three magical letters N-B-A. Now you’re right : he made his own bed. And dont believe that was intentional. As I said, not many people realize it in the US, but Rubio is a mature kid. On and off the court. Professionnal since 14. He knows what he wants and how to obtain it. He tried something it failed. But I still think he would have been a T-Wolf in a second if he didn’t have to hear the name FLYNN like two minutes after his on Draft day. Ricky made his own bed but doesnt want to sleep in it. And its his decision. Can’t we just accept it instead of hating on the kid???
To compare him with Steve Francis is good if you only see the “I’m bigger than the system”. But they’re not the same players. At all. And if you really think about it with a clear mind, Rubio doesn’t think he’s bigger than the system. He wanted something but didnt get it. So maybe he’ll prefer to stay in his country, where his star status is locked. Its not called wanting to be bigger than the system. It’s called playing with the system and leaving it if you dont get what you want. Its called knowing its not the ONLY system in the b-ball world. Just one question. Would you rather play the Euroleague’s Final Four with the Real Madrid, one of the biggest teams in your country, or nearly 82 useless games alongside Flynn on the roster of a team that may not clinch a playoff spot (not even talking about the market in comparaison to California or NY)??? Me : Euroleague’s Final Four. Without even thinking about it.

If one more person brings upt he performance of Rubio against Chris Paul and Deron Williams, I’m going to scream.
Paul and Dwil were playing like pure distributors. They didn’t play anything like the way they play in the NBA. I seriously doubt that Rubio would have kept up with the Chris Paul we saw give the business to Jason Kidd and Tony Parker a few years back. Or the Deron Williams I know. Both players toned their games down because of the players around them and the offense the team ran.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Sorry, I see this point has been made already. I apologize for repeating it.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    I agree with Jukai’s comment at 10:34 a.m.
Can’t have two standards. Yes, this decision may be what’s best for Rubio. No doubt. But, when other players have made similar decisions, they’ve gotten ripped. To suddenly leave him alone would smack of hypocrisy, unless it meant that no longer would these types of decisions be questioned. I don’t think that’s going to happen.

  • http://www.laumol.nl/weblog Laumol

I’ll gladly play as the T-Wolves point guard next season instead of Rubio. Anyone seen the other draftpick, Henk Norel? Also from Juventot…

  • http://dsfkl.com Jukai

LexaB: You’re being hypocritical. How come when Francis b*tches about where he wants to be, he’s “being bigger than the system” but when Rubio does it, he’s just being thoughtful and mature and deciding he would rather have another option. That makes no sense to me. Rubio COULD have played in Sacremento if he showed up and did all the workouts w/o whining, talked straight to the execs and gave them a guarentee he wouldn’t go back to Spain. Rubio DIDN’T. And now Rubio’s upset about a decision and is retreating beacuse of something he did.
He talked all this “the NBA is my dream!” but suddenly that dream doesn’t matter anymore, because it’s not the situation he wanted. That’s unreal to me. he’s punking out.
NOW if Rubio said, “look, I want to play in Spain for another year or two so I don’t have to pay my buyout, and I can come in more of a complete player” that’d be one thing. To sign with Real Madrid because he didn’t get to go on the team he wanted after all that talk about his “dream,” well, Rubio would lose all likeability to me.

  • http://dsfkl.com Jukai

Also, if I had the choice between the Timberwolves or Real Madrid, and I’d be making the same about of money, I’d choose the T-Wolves. In a mili-second. Without thinking about it.
I’m an American and I’ve always idolized the NBA, so take that with a grain of salt.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Honestly, it sounds like staying out of the draft entirely would have been Rubio’s best move if he was concerned about money. He knew he was going top five. He knew the top five teams were all in horrible markets.
Why is he surprised he got drafted by the team he got drafted by?
I mean, he could have just waited a couple years and skipped all the drama. He alreaady knew what his buyout was and he knew how much money he was going to make.

  • rav

“Also, if I had the choice between the Timberwolves or Real Madrid, and I’d be making the same about of money, I’d choose the T-Wolves.”

So despite the difference in league you’d pick an ineptly run team over one of the greatest sporting names in the world??

  • http://fjdkslf.com Jukai

Rav: It’s one of the greatest sporting names in the world… for soccer. Not for basketball.

  • al

Jukai. I am from Spain as you know from some of my previous post.
You are very informed and right about his game. No one here doubts he will succeed in the NBA. and we have seen Calderón, Gasol and Gasol, Scola, Navarro, and a lot others playing before going to the NBA.
And you are right also that his draft process has been horrible. But I have to say it is not his fault. Rubio is extremely well manered and polite. He has had horrible assesment by Dan Fegan and that might cost him a lot in the NBA.
I just hope he starts the first game and proves he is the player you and me know he is.

    Good luck to Rubio.

PD. I understand all the other arguments having only indirect information, the guy is really looking bad, but that is not true

  • http://www.sportweek.fr LexaB

    @Jukai
You may think it’s being hypocritical. You’re kind of right about that point cause I didnt explain my thinking process very well. Francis is an American player, attended HS and college in the US. NBA was the only place he wanted to be, that’s sure. No way he would have gone to Spain or Europe to play if all that “I’m not going to vancouver” sh*t turned bad. So yeah, for me, it’s being bigger than the system. You’re right on one point : Rubio told people “NBA is my dream”. But when you live in Europe, you didn’t read Rubio interviews for the last six months only. Since at least three years, Ricky repeats, in sp&anish media, how NBA is his dream but he doesn’t want to go there to just play and show his skills in a bad team. He keeps saying staying in Spain wouldn’t be bad. Totally different situation than the Francis’ one. You’re right about another thing. Rubio COULD have played in Sacramento if he did everything they wanted for the work-outs. But as al told ya, if you know the kid a little bit more than from Slam, ESPN and Youtube, you would know he really is a kind, intelligent, well manered, polite and mature 18-years-old.But clearly the people around him, mostly Dan Fegan, didn’t handle the situation well. And that’s an understatement. They acted like b*tches, not Ricky, and in the long run the only one it will cost something to is Ricky. That was my only point from the start. Dont hate on a kid that didn’t want all that mess to happen. Too easy to blame someone when you dont know the exact situation. BTW, nice arguing with you about that, really like that exchange of ideas.
And to end with your last point. I’m from Europe but lived in NYC for a few years. I’ve also always idolized the NBA and frankly, if I was a great player (I’m a player, not a great one :) ), I would do everything possible to play one day in the L. But my question was not to choose between Real Madrid and the T-Wolves. It was to choose between a team that brings a lot of good players this summer, wants you to be their running PG and will clearly be one of the favorites to reach the Euroleague’s Final Four (watch one day if you can, you’ll be surprised : those teams are good, really good, not the NBA-like athletic b-ball but better than a lot of NBA teams in pure b-ball wise), a.k.a. Real Madrid, and one team that’s rebuilding, will likely miss the playoffs and where there’s a guy called Flynn that will share minutes with ya (Rubio is not a 2, not at all, and neither is Flynn)?? Frankly, I would choose the first one. More to gain for your career, more to learn for your b-ball knowledge.
And yes Real Madrid is “one of the greatest sporting names in the world… for soccer”. But believe me, in European b-ball, that name rings a lot of bells too. And in Spain, for spanish fans, soccer or b-ball, Real Madrid is still Real Madrid. The biggest housename in the sporting world.

  • http://dsfkl.com Jukai

al: You can blame his agent all you want, but reports from Sacremento say otherwise. They said he was cryptic, indecisive, and refused to do quite a lot of things that most draft players do. I mean, think about it Al, he was a lock for fourth and then they turned him down right between when he MET with Sacremento and the draft. He d*cked himself. I’m sure Rubio is a good dude, all reports I’ve heard say he’s a really nice, down to earth kid, his parents did a great job keeping him level headed…. but he played the draft like a primadona. So he gets what he deserves.
He’s still going to carve up the NBA. Unlike other doubters, I still think he’s skilled like a mother f*cker. I just think he deserves what he gets right now. Just cause I respect his skill, doesn’t mean I respect how he tried to play where he’d get drafted.

  • http://www.sportweek.fr LexaB

    @Jukai
Come on man, you’re wiser than this. Dont tell me you believe everything from the reports from Sacramento but nothing from other reports, mostly europeans yes but a lot of those journalists followed Ricky in the US for those work-outs, that tell how his agent played a bad role in all that mess. I think the truth is between all those reports. Yes he refused to do quite a lot of things. But who tells you that was only HIS decision and not something his agent told him to do “for his good and his futur”??? Maybe thats not only a black and white situation. Maybe we can see the grey between the lines of all those reports.

  • http://dsfkl.com Jukai

LexaB: So Rubio has no thought power of his own and just let his agent do all the work? Then he’s naive. I’ll believe all those reports (which I have not seen, even on BallInEurope) if he fires Fegan. If he keeps Fegan, then he clearly wasn’t that upset with his agents actions, was he?
Once again, Sacremento claimed he was cryptic, unresponsive and refused a lot of workouts. Why would they lie? An easy way out on not risking Rubio when they picked EVANS?
The spanish media has plenty reason to place more blame on his agent than Rubio.

  • http://www.sportweek.fr LexaB

    @Jukai
I can see your points and accept them. But clearly you dont understand the influence and power of agents in Europe. I mean come on we had our share of great young soccer players that went in teams they really shouldnt have gone to just because their agent told them. Mourad Meghni, called the next Zidane in France 10 years ago, can tell you everything about that. Yes Rubio is naive and young. Yes he may have done bad things in Sacramento. But dont underestimate what european agents can do to those players once they’re in their pocket. I dont say Rubio is an angel and everything he does is great. My only point was dont hate on a kid simply because he made a choice or was a little bit forced to make it. I know you like his skills, and you’re right about it, so before hating on him just please let him do his thing and we’ll judge him in a few years or months. What I really dont understand is why people around here are hating on him when the real man to blam for thise is the T-Wolves’ GM. You know like me that everything would be different is David Stern didnt have to say : “

  • http://www.sportweek.fr LexaB

    @Jukai
Sorry. I pressed the “submit comment” before I was done.
Yes. Everything would be different if Stern didnt have to say :”And with the 6th pick, the T-Wolves select Flynn”. Seriously, do you thing that was a sign of great confidence towards Ricky ? I think what Rubio and his crew are really saying (between a lot of bad things, I’ll admit it to you)is “OK, you like me but you dont really have confidence on me being able to run the PG in an NBA team, no problem, I can stay in sunny Spain and like my life as a baller.” NBA is his dream yes. Not his only dream.
Oh and to end on the agent’s issue. Rubio will keep Dan Fegan cause he’s not upset thats sure. And when I talked about the influence of those european agents I wasnt talking about Fegan only. Rubio and his crew have a lot of people around them according to some spanish media.

  • http://dsfkl.com Jukai

LexaB: You fail, good sir. Dan Fegan is an AMERICAN agent, who also represents Kobe Bryant. He’s not a European agent. You need to be more research before you respond on something like this.
And once again, people are hating on him because if it wasn’t for Rubio’s decisions (AND his agent, but it is still Rubio for following through on them), Rubio would have gone fourth.. third… he may have even gone second in the draft! Instead, he put himself in the position to GET picked fifth, and be screwed by a newbie GM picking for a bad franchise.
So yes, the situation sucks, and if Rubio had played all his cards right, I’d feel REALLLLY bad for the kid. But Rubio didn’t. You cannot feel bad for Rubio.
As I said, if he fires his agent, I’ll change my tune. Until then, I will keep repeating: he made his bed, sleep in it

  • http://www.sportweek.fr LexaB

    @Jukai
My bad about Fegan, he is american. Sorry for that inexcusable error that make my first comment irrelevant. But thats what I said on my second response : according to spanish media, Fegan is not the only one who helps Rubio with his decisions. And I maintain everything I said about those european agents. Once again, ask a lot of good young soccer players what they think about those people. But that was my bad, I admit it without a problem (I can accept other people ideas without thinking I’m the only one who’s right, I dont think thats the case for everyone around here, and I dont talk about you on that one). And everything you tell me after that is right. But I still dont understand. Why hating on a kid for his decisions or the ones from his crew??? Like you said, those are his decisions, he made his bed and he’ll sleep in it. But why the hate??? What did that kid do to commenters on Slamlonline, really??? Nothing. At all. Thats his life, his career, his choices. did you see him cry since the Draft??? Did you see him fall into depression because everything falls appart???? If you did, give me the link. Cause in Marca, one of the biggest Spain’s sports daily newspapers, he seemed to be OK with his situation. I can accept you telling me he was no the smartest kid on the face of earth for the last two months. But please, explain to me : why the hate??? did that kid insult NBA fans??? did he murder LeBron James??? Did he spit on David Stern (at least maybe people would have loved him for that…)??? did he tell people they were not worth his skills??? No. No. No. And no. Why the hate??? You’re right, we cannot feel bad for him. Does it mean we need to claim he is a b*tch??? He and his crew made decisions. Ricky will assume them like he did for all his professionnal career. That may be the difference between Rubio and a normal draft pick. A normal draft pick just dreams of any NBA team that can give him a contract. Ricky thinks as the professionnal he’s been for years : wanting to leave only for a better situation. And I repeat : I dont think the T-Wolves with Flynn are a better spot for him than a starting-PG spot in Real Madrid’s roster. Even if I recognize he could have been in a different situation if he had played his cards better. Yep. Thats a tricky situation. I can admit his errors, they’re clear, but for one last time : why the hate??? why???
