Andre Miller is a Blazer

by Ryne Nelson

There were two “AI’s” in Philly. So the team traded the legend. There were then two “Andre’s” in Philly. So the team let the older one go. Now the 76ers finally will be alone with Andre Iguodala, and we’re not even sure if they’re entirely thrilled with the situation. But that’s a column for another day…

So the “sources” have spoken. Within the next day, Philly will allow its only point guard (above the age of 19) to leave. Certainly, there’s the money issue — the team apparently didn’t want to lock up a 33-year-old for an alleged three years, $21 million. But ‘Dre became the silent leader over the past two-and-a-half seasons. No doubt he’ll leave a huge hole in the Sixers backcourt… maybe one so large only the Answer can fill. But that’s a column for another day as well…

From the Philadelphia Daily News:

Andre Miller’s agent, Andy Miller, has confirmed that within 24 hours Andre Miller will be a Portland Trailblazer.

Andy Miller said the two parties are “finalizing” the deal today and it should become official within 24 hours. His client, who has been the 76ers starting point guard for the last 2-1/2 seasons, will receive a deal that one source said was “an improvement” over the deal the Sixers were offering, which was reportedly in the 1-year/$6 million range.

One of the League’s most consistent and underrated point guards finally will get his chance to compete for a title. Miller’s missed a total of five games in his 10-season career (incroyable!) and has the fourth-most assists among active players. Last season, statistically speaking at least, was Miller’s most efficient year since his early years with the Cavs.

He doesn’t fit the young Blazer mold, like David Lee or Paul Milsap would have, but he doubtless has three more very solid years left in his legs. He’ll provide much-needed veteran savvy to an otherwise talented, but inexperienced Portland team. Good move for PDX.

Haha Ryne, I emailed you at 4:29 about this. You had already known, obviously. I love this move for the Blazers.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

Moose gets the unofficial hat tip this time (raising his H/T total to roughly 389 for the year). ;) Seriously, ‘Dre’s one of the nicest guys in the L. Super solid player. The Blazers really needed a vet who can fit right in. He’s that guy for sure!

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

Then again, he’s about 10 years older than everyone else on the team, which has to mean something.

  • http://slamonline.com/ niQ

Lol I just mentioned this in the prev Andre Miller post but watev. Glad Portland finally got their vet.

  • vmcb

It would be nice to see Iverson come back and play his final few seasons as 76er. Now that he has matured, he would be a perfect fit for a playoff-contending team.

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

idk about this. roy is already kinda pg. i think hinrich would have fit better. capn kirks offense is 10x that of millers, esp off ball.

  • JL

Way better fit than Millsap woulda been. Actually fills in a weakness, and Roy will get more energy for end game situations!

Please tell me that this is a sign and trade

  • LB

I dont know about this signing. I dont think the Blazers really need a “pure” point anyways, since Roy is going to be handling the ball alot. What the Blazers need from the 1 spot is a guy that can hit the open shot consistently and be a consistent on-the-ball defender. Andre Miller is solid for sure, but he dosent have 3 pt range, and he is getting older (and he wasnt that fast of a guy by NBA standards to begin with).

  • roybot

tarzan, hinrich would have cost us Bayless, who we still have faith in, and signing Andre will loosen off some of the ballhandling responsibilities of B Roy and conserve more of his energy for defense, catch and shoot, etc., which was the reason we wanted Turkoglu too. Im am extremely excited for next year, not just because of getting DreMill, but also because Oden is finally scratching off the surface of his potential.

  • LB

It just seems to me like the Blazers are throwing money at any available free agent. I dont think any of the free agents left are going to be able to take the Blazers to the next level. Lamar Odom is versatile, but he’ll take minutes away from the talented forwards the Blazers already have, like Aldridge and Outlaw. Signing AI would take away minutes and shots away from their young guns, and he might disrupt chemistry. I think the Blazers will be better off saving their cap space for a true impact player for next year’s class.

    Iverson to Philly, please.

  • http://slam comets

thats a good fit for the trailblazer there not giving up anything for him he is an upgrade from steve blake….

  • http://slamonline.com/ niQ

I think its a good move. A lot of people are saying that they needed someone who could hit 3′s, why? You already have Steve Blake, Webster, Rudy, and (sorta) Outlaw. Although you lose Steve Blake’s 3′s, I still think Andre Miller is an upgrade (who’s tougher and a better “scorer”). And besides, Blake will be first off of the bench anyways.

  • http://www.slamonline.com wayno

Solid move. Having a veteran PG to run that young team will be really good for them.

  • http://www.youtube.com/ The Promise

Well, honestly, I see this as an upgrade. Dre is a playmaker, so he will get Roy, Oden, Aldridge, Fernandez, and the others good looks with his ability to penetrate and dish, even though he has never been the quickest guy in the league. What you will see now is, Portland stepping up a notch, enough to contend with the best of the West. Say Oden and Fernandez break out next year, and Aldridge stays solid, and Roy plays like an All Star, like he did last year, I think you could see Portland as a top 3 seed at least.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

you guys are crazy, the blazers are officially a contender now. that is one hell of a lineup. i think a sign and trade would actually benefit both teams. the blazers have to let some of those guys go to establish a true pecking order. you can’t bring THREE scoring wings (webster, rudy, outlaw) off the bench.

  • http://www.youtube.com/ The Promise

    Co-sign Z.

  • rob stewart

I’m praying my old Philly #3 jerseys will become relevant again. Please get A.I.!!!

  • Momma No Like Cold

Funny, I did the same thing with the wife. Traded in the 38 year-old for a couple of 19s.

  • Momma No Like Cold

Du like ‘Dre tho. Brings needed vet leadership, the missin’ ingredient.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

This is great for both Andre and the Blazers. They just addressed their main weakness as a team right here.
Now, we need to have: AI to Philly, Sessions to New York.

  • Quail

I doubt Blake will be staying in portland much longer. This season is going to be a contract year for him. So if he stays, I highly doubt the Blazers will re-sign him after this coming season. Especially if Bayless keeps improving at the fast rate that he is. Amen?

  • http://bleacherreport.com/users/42594-Hoops4life- Overtime

Love this move. One of the most underated guys in the league…because he doesnt cross guys up and then dunk on them? Forget that.
And 5 games???!! That is incredible.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com DP

I want to see Iggy take over now. It has been his team he just hasn’t taken full control yet. What is it now? year 6? yeah Iggy has to bring it. play wit it.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

Great for Andre, who is finally on a playoff team. I understand the argument behind some people who were hoping that the Blazers would’ve gotten another youngster, but talented youth must be balanced with veteran experience if the Blazers are serious about a playoff run. And it frees Roy to be on attack-mode instead of playing point forward. Good stuff.

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

Great move for the Blazers, but I was just trying to remember one big play that Andre Miller has made in his career and I came up empty. Somebody remind me.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

Is Dre a better offensive player than Blake? Or Hinrich? I’d have to say yes. Sure, he can’t hit the three like Blake does, but he can create his own shot by driving into the lane, and he scores at a near .500 clip. Pretty efficient. Hinrich had three really good seasons with Chicago, but has struggled outside of Scott Skiles’ system, and he really just is a better, faster, more physical version of Blake anyway, I think, so having him and Steve Blake on the same team is kinda redundant.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com DP

I know one big mistake he made, Brad. Guarding derrick rose too close. play wit it.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

Haha, Ryne using “incroyable” cracked me UP! Nice one. Oh and beware the Blazers, Andre is no joke. That just got them up to contender status, even if he has to guard 3 of the best PG’s in the league on a regular basis now (TP, CP3, Deron) he’ll give as good as he takes. Also he’s one of the taller PG’s in the league, and crafty as they come. Nate better work on his people skills this summer though (or his rotations to be exact) because those young guns are going to be hungry for minutes.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

    And Philly, what the what??

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

I don’t know if they’re contenders yet, guys. This year’s team gave their all, played really well in playoffs and got convincingly (not spectacularly) beaten by Houston. Andre definitely makes them a better team, but contenders? The Lakers and Nuggets are still, from the looks of it now, better. And I think the Spurs, with the new additions of Mcdyess and runaway groom RJ, can be counted in that company. Miller makes the Blazers a lot better, but the question of whether he puts them in really elite company still remains.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

THEN again, we have very recent examples of how the addition of an able veteran PG can simultaneously revive their careers and revamp a team into much, much more than the sum of its parts. Kidd in NJ, Nash in PHX, Chauncey just this past season.

  • MC

so with b-roy and dre both being #7, does roy still get to keep the number?

  • gio

lou williams its you time to shine.

  • cash

andre miller is not good player not a good defender and bad 3 point shooting and has not gotten team out of first round. there were better players out there then andre miller not a good move

  • Lz – Cphfinest3

    Gooooooooooooooooooood move Blazers..

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Andre Miller obviously will start, but Bayless better be the #2 point guard and eventually the starter. I like Blake, but he deserves better than being tangled with two other capable point guards. His talents could and should be used elsewhere. I don’t see why the Blazers wouldn’t use this as an opportunity to groom Bayless into a legitimate NBA point guard, since they’ve finally found a veteran for him to learn the ropes under.

  • D12FSU

because theyre in the west, and because the spurs lakers and nuggets are there….this really doesnt mean anything…2nd round at best

  • Diogo

Iverson to Philly. Respect, jersey retirement and all that. C’mon!

  • Knock Knock

lol at the person saying a “veteren pg” can change the blazers and then mentions kidd, nash, and chauncey. Too bad the blazers would trade andre for any of those three in a second if they could. Not to mention that he’s never been an ELITE pg like those three. PS= blazers could only be contenders if they were in the east.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Knock Knock, why do you insist on being stupid? ‘Dre isn’t a top 10 point guard?

  • danny

teddy, stupid is saying andre miller in the same breath as chauncy, kidd, nash. No, dre is not a top 10 pg. a top ten pg could take their team outta the first round in the sorry east, sorry to say. I’m not a particular blazer fan, but those are just facts.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

danny, what are you talking about? The Sixers were playing the Magic in the first round. In case you didn’t know, the Magic went on to beat the Celtics and the Cavs, and then advanced to the finals. The Magic were better than many teams from the West… Does that mean you blame Chris Paul for losing in the first round?

  • danny

The west is much harder. And if you watched the sixers, orl series you would know that a lotta people were saying orlando was going to lose the first round. basketball is a game of matchups, and the sixers should have won the series if all the players showed up.

  • danny

Andre scored a lotta points, but he wasn’t leading the team like he should have been.-

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

@Knock knock: I guess that would be me. Give Nash or Kidd – “elite” point guards – those late 90s / early 2000′s Cleveland teams and see how deep in the playoffs they would’ve gotten them.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

@Knock knock: Also, excuse me for trying to present two sides of an argument. I sometimes forget that being overzealous and voluntarily blind to any opposing opinion whatsoever has become all the rage on these comment boards.

  • sefos

am I the only one who thinks it’s really cool that andre miller’s agent is called andy miller?

  • JoeMaMa

Not to knock Miller, because he’s a solid team player and hard/smart worker, but never underestimate the motivation that a contract year brings. You can put him in the top 10, but if he takes it lightly this year he’ll find himself battling for minutes with two younger PGs who’re dying to ball out. We shall see!!

  • Teddy-the-Bear

I think its cool too, sefos.

  • http://www.sprint.com/pre dma

2 year contract with 3rd year team option and at $7M a year is a steal. now if the blazers could swing blake/outlaw for a backup banger PF, they’re set. i’m not a fan of miller and i think he’s not the perfect fit, but they’re desperate to use a once in a lifetime chance of cap space.

  • danny

anybody remember the younger andre on the nuggets?? He has a nack for always losing in the first round, whatever team he’s on. Hopefully he’s matured and got more skilled-

    who knows!!!

  • donovan

How good Portland will be depends on whether Greg Oden can develop a move or three.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

Whos older then? A Miller or Greg Oden.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

    LeBron James.

  • Rnz

Andre Miller’s agent is Andy Miller..?..are they related?

  • atticusmitch

thisgives alot of depth to the blazers. He can mentor Bayless, be a leader in the locker room and raise the average age of the team by like 30 years cause he so much older then everyone on the blazers. overall great addition to the team. Steve blake can move to being a sixth man spot up shooter in crunch time, roy can focus on scoring and it gives them a true floor leader.

im kinda on the fence with this move, the blazers needed a vet, but they needed a proven 3 point shooter, and bibby would of been a perfect fit, good move for the blazers though a good mentor the got for bayless

would felton or sessions been the better choice??

  • http://slamonline Ronnie

do u think fernandez should get more minutes

  • http://slamonline portland is the best

the blazers will only be as good as greg oden his improvement is vital to the blazers at least 10-10 numbers are needed

  • http://slamonline portland is the best

i dont think steve blake is the guy that they should keep

he does not have a winning track record

waive or trade him and give patty mills some minutes he has loads of potential

  • http://www.broy7.com nate the great

this is perfect, finnaly the blazers get a good free agent. ef milsap and lee, i want me some miller!!
this is a great fit, miller is great, and it will take some pressure off broy.
miller will help teach bayless how not to average 6 turnovers per game, he has playoff experiance.
its all around a great fit. hopefully somehow we can find away to get tayshaun. then this team is stacked.
trade outlaw and webster and a 2nd round pick for tayshaun and everything would be perfect =].
