Boozer to Chicago?

by Marcel Mutoni

As the madness of the offseason rages on, the Chicago Bulls have been suspiciously quiet. Until now, anyway.

Rumor has it that the Bulls have begun to chat with the Utah Jazz about Carlos Boozer’s availability. The Portland Trailblazers are reportedly also part of the talks. ESPN was first to report on this:

Another major multi-team trade might be looming in the NBA with the Portland Trail Blazers, Utah Jazz and Chicago Bulls having discussed a deal that would be headlined by Carlos Boozer and Kirk Hinrich, according to NBA front-office sources.

Sources stressed to ESPN.com that no deal was imminent Thursday and that both Portland and Utah are still evaluating additional trade scenarios. But two sources with knowledge of the three-team proposal confirmed that there have been substantive talks aimed at landing Boozer in Chicago, Hinrich in Portland and Tyrus Thomas in Utah.

The deal would seem to make sense for the Bulls (financially) and Boozer (who’s been said to want out of Utah for some time now, and this move would allow Utah to ink Paul Millsap long-term). Chicago is trying to free up cap space for next summer (this could help them clear about $20 mil in salary), and with Carlos entering the final year of his deal, this would give them a solid low-post presence in the increasingly competitive Eastern Conference.

Whatever happens, I just hope that someone has video of Jerry Sloan’s reaction when told of the possibility that he might have to coach Tyrus Thomas.

yeh u got it right marcel somewhere jerry sloans brain has exploded

  • http://adfji.com Jukai

    Uh…. It works… but I don’t see any teams IMPROVING… just… being different.
Gotta see what Portland gives up.

  • http://www.twitter.com/nichosmegasport andrew

Dang. I thought this was quashed already? I think Booze’d be nice with Rose… similar player to D-Will to set him up etc. Could work.

  • http://www.hoopsmanifesto.blogspot.com Jeff Fox

I’d like to see Hinrich play for Portland – that would be a nice fit.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

Who’s that dude that looks like Billups looking on in the picture?
    Yeh, Um, agree with Jukai.

  • JRox

    Adrian Griffin?

  • a_whiteman

This deal would make chicago very scary

  • a_whiteman

Jukai how do portland and chicago NOT improve with this deal???

  • http://www.mynameinblue.blogspot.com Hisham

Haha Hursty I was thinking the same thing, only not Billups but KG. Who absolutely do not look like eachother. I don’y know who that guy is. WHO IS HE?

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

Ok, so he kinda looks like Billups/KG and OLD MAN Karl Malone and… John Salmons sans beardie? Maybe you even wanna throw in some Dwight Howard?!?
JRox – uhh, who that? I thought he was in college? Like a combo of the 2 Uconn guys?

  • larrylegend

put boozer where he can do no harm…

  • http://www.mynameinblue.blogspot.com Hisham

By the way I do think that teams could improve from this deal, Hinrich would give the Blazers depth at the point, at which they’re a little thin. Plus Boozer in the Chi would instantly make chicago a lot better imo

  • http://www.mynameinblue.blogspot.com Hisham

He has a little bit of Kevin Willis in there too

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

whiteman – because they might have to give up someone like ghostface?! He’s the only centre they have (please don’t throw Oden at me) + he doesn’t fulfill the contractual requirements $ wise I don’t think.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

Hot damn Hisham! Now I’m confuddled… hmm
    Help us out SLAM!

  • http://www.mynameinblue.blogspot.com Hisham

you’re right Hursty, Przybilla is really valuable to them. and i just checked the current roster for both the Bulls and the Jazz. I couldn’t find any pictures that resemble the guy we’re looking for.

  • a_whiteman

I didn’t know that ghostface would be involved, that would not be smart give the frailness of oden, but to solidify the pg spot with a hinrich blake and bayless trio would be a huge boost.

  • a_whiteman

Chicago is the big winner out of this, they become instantly better with boozer downlow. Is it just me or is the east becoming scarier then the west???

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

Hmmmmmmm. Not sure what to say about all this. Chuck Norris would probably know what to do though.

  • sixersforlife_85

It’s definitely Adrian Griffin, go to gettyimages

  • http://www.mynameinblue.blogspot.com Hisham

    Adrian Griffin it is

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

whiteman – just you. Portland is getting better, the Spurs got JEFFERSON from the Bucks, Dallas is good to go for another year or two, the Wizards are never healthy, Detroit is kinda frail atm. The Heat had one terrible season
Bobcats are getting better, so are the Hawks, but so is OKC and (wow) Memphis.
Overall, the West seeds wouls still romp the Easts.
Look at last year, the year before, and the year before that. The West would win probably 6/8 from each cross competition.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

    Adrian Griffin it is!
*Hi 5′s all round and next pub shout is on me!*

a_whiteman: Chicago doesn’t improve because I have doubts about Boozer’s abilities in Chicago’s system. Boozer would still be a 20-10 guy but I feel a lot of his intangibles, his drawing out the offense, his picks and screens, they’d be under-utilized in a fast-break or three-point shoot offense like Chicagos, although in fairness I don’t really watch enough of Chicago to know the intricacies of their offense. Yet, once again, we need to know the extent of what Chicago is giving away– if it’s just Boozer for Thomas and Kirk, they get an all-star started for two STARTER-level backups. I don’t think it makes Chicago worse, but just different.
Portland just getting Captain Kirk straight up makes them better. That wont happen: Portland HAS to give something away.

  • http://www.hoopsmanifesto.blogspot.com Jeff Fox

Will Boozer be happy with any team he plays for?

  • http://adfji.com Jukai

Jeff: he’s happy in every team he plays for. He just gets happier screwing teams over.

  • http://Slamonline.com Spaceship Jay

    Meh. Co-sign Jukai.

  • a_whiteman

You make a good point about the little things he does, picks and ability to take the defender out to 15ft. I think that giving rose a guy like that will only benefit him and his progression. I think it helps their 3pt game as well cuz once boozer starts scoring most teams will drop down to double him leaving shooters good quality looks. Him and brad miller is a very skilled frontcourt

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

And Deng if he ever wakes up from his 9month basketball coma. He used to be ok too remember?

  • JRox

Dude used to play for Dallas as “defensive stopper” I have no how he’s still in the L.

  • http://slamonline.com/ niQ

It appears Portland is part of every FA chase.

  • http://slamonline.com Philly’s Phinest

Unfortunately, this trade could keep Jerryd Bayless (the next Steve Francis!) on the bench for the next couple of years…

  • Zach

Bulls need to go through with this trade. we would be short a 2 guard by losing Hinrich, but this free alot of cap to bring in D Wade 2010. Think of it. Rose, Wade, Deng, Salmons, Boozer. thats a championship contender

  • http://bleacherreport.com/users/42594-Hoops4life- Overtime

Makes sense for all teams really. And tho Utah do get space to sign Millsap, if he goes elsewhere…they could be left with a swap of Boozer for Tyrus Thomas…not cool

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Bulls should go after Paul Milsap, instead of Boozer.

  • Diesel

If we get rid of BG and now possibly Heinrich, who will we kick the ball out to on all these dribble drives? No one left on the team can shoot threes.

  • Zach

I agree with Diesel. John Salmons only hits about a quarter of the shots he takes. Rose won’t be able to do it all

  • mj23

it’s a shame we lost Ben Gordon. Right now you would be looking at a line up of: Rose, Deng, Boozer, Miller, and Salmons and Noah off the bench. I don’t know much of the draft pick James Johnson.

  • Orlando Woolridge

John Salmons was hurt last year (groin injury) and still played quite well. I think he can step in a do a good job if he’s healthy. I don’t think they’ll miss gordon as much as everybody is saying.

  • http://Egotastic.com Michael

Andrew Bynum & Adam Morrison to Chicago for Hinrich and Noah.

  • nba kid

Yeah, Bulls need to ink some kind of 3 point-shooting 2 guard. Salmons is an excellent slasher but he’s no marksman. Von Wafer and Keith Bogans come to mind as FA’s who can hit a triple.

  • Candyman

John Salmons will be a AllStar this season. Trust man

  • Diesel

I’ll reiterate…Rose, Deng, and Salmon’s games all revolve around driving to the basket and creating shots at the hoop. Noah doesn’t attempt a shot outside of 3 feet. Boozer can step oout to about 10 feet. Who on this team is going to score outside of 15 feet?

  • http://www.broy7.com nate the great

the blazers dont have to throw in anyone for this trade to go down.
utah and chi town added the blazers in this trade simply to make the trade go down.
if you guys research booze’s contract is a lot more than thomas’s therfor the trade wont work.
but if chi town trades kirk to portland while aquring booze and letting go of tyrus then the trade works.
so then after rip city gets kirk they can trade webster, blake, and a 2nd round pick for tayshaun =]].

  • http://slamonline Blaze

John Salmons an all-star?? WoW, I dont think so. Maybe most improved player. I thought Booze and 2pac Okur agreed to play for jazz at least 1 more year?

  • JumpinJoe

It’s a smoke screen…it won’t happen, get them busy, keep them busy and then, Pritch Slap ‘em behind their backs—Mislap will be going to Portland, or, the Jazz will go broke trying to battle Paul Allen’s deep pockets–think about it, who would want to live in Salt Lake City? Woooooo hoooooooooooooo it’s a party town!

  • edilvia4sho

am I the only one who cares that KIRK, would have to leave!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Why do the Blazers keep trying to find Starting/All-Star caliber Forwards when they already have Lamarcus Aldridge?
Also, the Jazz would be crazy to practically trade Carlos Boozer for Tyrus-freaking-Thomas…

  • http://bulls.com airs

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!
