For $25 Mil, Mavs Get Their Kidd Back

by Marcel Mutoni

In the end, as always, it was about the money.

Jason Kidd agreed to return to the Dallas Mavericks, largely because team owner Mark Cuban was the one person on this planet willing to offer him this kind of money: $25 million over three years, for a 36-year old point guard.

The Knicks will simply have to continue living with the immortal Chris Duhon as their on-court leader. More from the Star-Telegram:

“We are excited to have Jason Kidd back in a Mavs uniform,” Cuban said. “He was a major contributor for us last year and we expect more of the same next year. We also are excited to have him tutor Roddy Beaubois and J.J. Barea. This is hopefully the first of several deals to come in the next couple of weeks.”

Kidd was wooed by the Knicks, but they could not offer a contract that would be competitive with what the Mavericks could offer. Barring a sign-and-trade, the Knicks were limited to offering a contract starting at about $5.5 million, expected to be the mid-level exception when the salary cap is confirmed by the NBA this week.

The thinking in Dallas seems to be that Jason’s presence will help lure free agents to town in the mythical summer of 2010.

Last season, Kidd averaged 9 points and 8.7 assists per night, the lowest output of his career.

I had no idea Jason Kidd was still in the league.

  • Clockwork

So Cuban refused to pay Nash back in 2004 but will pay Kidd 25 million 5 years later? WTF?

  • db

The thinking in Dallas is that they had no choice. With Kidd gone they would have been left with a gaping hole at the pg-position and nothing for compensation.

jason kidd just hustled the sh*t out of dallas.

  • Riggs

i dont know why i just posted as Mo….

  • http://theghostofroyhobbs.blogspot.com Mo Charlo

Kidd’s the best rebounder on the team, so it makes sense that way, too. This is the kind of thing you need to put up with when your seven-footer doesn’t come within 25 ft. of the basket.

Riggs, every now and again, your stuff pops up on mine. Slamonline and wordpress needs to square some stuff away.

25 millions for the 09′ version of Jason Kidd ? Somewhere, Steve Nash is laughing. Out loud.

who’s Roddy Beaubois? Sorry for my ignorancy

  • http://slamonline.com YKnot

I saw him drafted and have the same question! Sorry for my “ignorancy”?

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Cheryl

Read between the lines and Cuban paid 25 mil for a player/coach. Not a bad gig for Kidd.

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

    Whoa we dodged a bullet.

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

Has anyone else noticed Cubes has a hard time admitting that he’s wrong.

  • http://www.another48minutes.blogspot.com Gerard Himself

@Justin Adler: that’s not even funny. Jokes like that can be used on the 12th man on some team’s bench, but not here. Lame.

  • http://slamonline.com/ niQ

in the end, it’s all about the money. and Brad & Clockwork, this is simply Cuban finally learning from his Nash mistake.

  • Michael

    co-sign Gerard, pretty damn lame

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

For some reason, I thought Kidd had re-signed for 5 years (and that way the contract would make sense). Guess not. Oh well.

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

So 8 mil a year for jason kidd to average 8 points and 7 assists a game over the next three seasons. While steve nash who he let walk will probably do about 14 and 9 over the same span. Interesting logic from this guy. I can’t say enough how glad I am the knicks didn’t get kidd, I thought he was overrated in his prime and now he is ridiculously so. Good luck mavs.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

what the eff? Ason? For THREE years. Aww crap! This former Pointgod can’t hold his own against 80% of the league’s PG’s. Unless Cubes has plans to get a great young guard and use Kidd in the mentor role, this sucks. Jason was exposed against TP and another aging PG (Billups, who’s also overrated) last playoffs. stupid, stupid Mavs. Dirk needs to jump ship.

  • http://double-technical.blogspot.com Zee!

So Kidd is basically saying he no longer wants to compete for a ring by taking this offer no? Also, what are you doing with your cake at this late of an age to not be able to take a pay cut to sign with a contender?

  • Ken

Obviously Cubes made a mistake by not re-signing Nash, and even he knows this by now. That doesn’t change the fact that he needed to make a similar decision this year with Kidd. Just because he made a bigger mistake 5 years ago doesn’t mean he shouldn’t make a mistake by not re-signing Kidd this year.

  • wilz

    new york isnt a contender…

  • JoeMaMa

Dallas: where the slow decline continues.

  • TADOne

  • vtrobot

cuban, just throwing money. this is stupid. is there an amount that he could pay to get devin harris back?

  • L

Beaubois is a french PG they drafted this year. He is quick, great first step, good court vision, he could be a steal..L

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

A 36 year old Kidd is a big upgrade over Roddy Beaubois and J.J. Barea. Why pay him this much money, the Mavericks are not better than the Blazers, Nuggets, Spurs, Lakers, so you can say they are the fifth best team with this dumb move. I would have traded Kidd for a young prospect, like Cuban gave up in D. Harris.

  • nba kid

Wow Cubes, this is a WASTE of money. Unless! Unless you’re planning on dealing Kidd for someone…”This is hopefully the first of several deals to come in the next couple of weeks.” Maybe Markie’s got a grand plan afterall…but most likely not and he wasted 25 mil on an ancient PG.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Blinguo

JKidd plans to use all that money to go back in time and get Toni Braxton back. Or I guess he just wants to retire in Dallas, wondering every year if he can get on that other Texas – actual annual Championship contender team.

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

    NiQ:That was a joke, right?

  • Ralph ‘chaps’ Rodriguez

Always been a kidd fan, was hoping he would sign to the lakers oh well

  • http://web.mac.com/roaringred bbaby

I think Cuban is trying his best to re-open that championship window. A couple of off-season trades could do that. If they don’t pull more moves, then that’s $25 mil wasted.

  • nicko

    trade him for shaq!!!

  • IllWill21

@ Darksaber.. you are trippin.. Billups, overrated?!?!.. thats crazy.. and yeah. TP, a GREAT pg in his PRIME exposed kidd, no doubt… as would CP3 and DWill.. all day.. but kidd is a smart player and a great teammate… it is overpriced… but w/o him at THIS point… the mavs dont have a chance… titles or not.. wins+money… period… and tell Joe D and CP3 that Billups is overrated and see what response you would get. Now DIRK… def overrated

  • Mo

Billups isn’t overrated. And perhaps Rasual Butler should be asked too since that’s who Billups really lit up in the playoffs.

  • yaway

Kidd must’ve pulled some strings if you know what I mean

  • yaway

  • Josh D

Kidd was a great player a few years ago but he’s only gonna get worse over the next three years,25 million is not worth it

  • http://web.mac.com/roaringred bbaby

@illWill21 and all you Dirk Haters:

“Watch the damn game”- Randy Galloway

  • E.

Irk Nowitzki. NO D! He is not a leader and lacks the killer instinct. This is why Cubes HAD to sign Kidd.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

  • http://www.anwilson.blogspot.com rainman10

ok ok Dirk isn’t a leader and lacks a killer instinct blah blah blah. So Kidd has the leadership. Terry has the killer instinct (I guess). And who is the best player on that team? Dirk. It’s ok if a player doesn’t posess every attribute. That’s why you are allowed to have 11 other players on your team. Keeping Kidd was the best thing. Worse decisions have been made, players have been overpaid more than this.

  • http://www.anwilson.blogspot.com rainman10

And stop with the overrated Dirk talk. Off the top of my head it took me about 3 seconds to decide that there aren’t 12 players in the league with nicer numbers than Dirk. He produces. And he does win games. He has just lost a couple playoff series which sucks. Ya ya the warriors series…and the finals before that I know. But he’s a hall of fame player.

  • http://slamonline Blaze

Kidds not getting any younger and unless they sign a “big name” free agent, he will never get that ring. Dallas is kinda soft, they need what Barkley would call a “pit-bull”. Dirk is a great player but I think he lets guys get into his head. I overheard Tyson Chandler call him a B-Hitch in last years playoffs. Mavs need a tough-guy, Shaq woulda been a great pick-up.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

illwill, hey it’s ok if you believe the hype about Mr. Billups, not that he has a PROVEN track record of wilting in pressure situations over the years, dating all the way back to his early days as a Piston. (please watch games 4-6 of the 09 WCF again, with emphasis on Bbbillups decision/shot making….ghastly) Not that Nene, K-Mart, Anderson and Melo playing healthy for the first time in years had nothing to do with the Resurgence of the Thuggets, it was alllllll Billups. Chauncey is a good PG, i respect his game, but dude must be one of the most deceptive players around. Shot selection is atrocious, assist averages underwhelming and defense just above average. In short, overrated. But hey, the dude who averaged 30/11/4 (+) against Denver (while getting no help from Ason on offense and nearly nothing from his 6th man of the year or the injured 2nd option on his team) was the overrated. Keep believing the espn stories.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

On a whim, i checked Dirk’s 08/09 Stats, especially the playoffs. Oh my, the “overrated” one sure proved me wrong in my earlier statement. He scored 34.4/11.6/4.0 and a Block per game for good measure against Denver (and it’s badass frontcourt) Chauncey had a great Postseason too btw, 20/6.8/etc is no joke, but his Chaunceyness grew too in love with his outside shot after destroying N.O. in the first round with it, then things started getting ugly as the playoffs progressed. (and having .1 Assists more than Andre Iguodala is not a proud achievement for a supadupaguard) So yes, i’ve watched both players closely over the last 8-9 years, and i’m still not that impressed with Bbbbbillups.

  • oncloudz909

Ason “no J” Kidd has to be the happiest vet in the league right now. Granted he wont win a ring he has enough money to buy rings and a grill. On a basketball note Cuban should have looked to trade Kidd. But nobody wants to play with pssy a$$ Dirk yeah he puts up pretty good numbers but when push comes to shove he gets punkd.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

I call it the “Varejao affect”.
Using that principle, Kidd still got underpaid.
