Hawks Inking Marvin Williams to $40 Million Deal

Atlanta is reportedly very close to locking up its forward to a large deal: “Free-agent forward Marvin Williams said via text message Wednesday that a Yahoo! Sports report that he has reached agreement to remain a Hawk is premature but admitted the sides are ‘close.’ Hawks general manager Rick Sund wouldn’t comment on the negotiations Wednesday, but Williams told the AJC via text he would be in Atlanta next week for face-to-face talks. The Hawks are believed to have offered a contract worth $37.5 million over five seasons, with incentives that could push the package as high as $40 million.”

Terrible contract for a nothing player. This is way too commonplace now.

  • stokesey

Yeah im going to have to agree with Eboy… Doesnt seem more than a future journeyman to me

Maybe him and Varejao can hang out and roll around in money

  • http://theghostofroyhobbs.blogspot.com Mo Charlo

They should trade him for Josh Childress.

Has he done anything since coming into the L? Didn’t he average like 15 a game last year with alot of minutes? This guy should be scoring alot in the Hawks system. I don’t really mind the move a whole lot though, since it keeps the Hawks young core together.

far, far too much – looks like they’re desperate to show that picking him over chris paul and deron williams wasnt a huge screwup. besides, if $8m a year is what marvin williams is worth al horford must be looking at a max deal in 2 years time

Oh. I thought the deal was done already.

Varejao is a far better player than Williams. I just can’t see why you would give him more than a MLE.

As much as I like Marvin, I gotta say he’s overpaid.

Even when he was at UNC I kept wondering what the hype was all about on (yet another) classic tweener. He is big and athletic, but not quick or perimeter skilled enough to be anything other than an adequate defender or limited scorer. He may get to 20ppg one day, but never will be an all around force. I can’t believe Atlanta didn’t use him in a sign and trade for either a real SF or PF, since Josh Smith is just a bulky athletic small forward masquerading as PF in their system. Especially when you consider that only 5 or 6 teams (at most) have a worse starting SF.

Remember when he was all hyped up in these very same pages? Dang that seems like just days ago…

    Nice signing!!! For Marvin.

    WHaT?

I will never understand why gm’s don’t look at market value for players. Who else is offering him a deal like this? That being said, I will refrain from hatin’ the player. Congrats Marv!

  • kadavour

why would ANYONE give Marvin Williams 40 mil over ANY period of time? I need to get in the league.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Allen Iverson is being offered 5 mil and under, 1 year contracts and Marv gets 40?
The NBA, where Carlito Cool can ink $50 mil for putting back the bricks of Mo Williams.

How will they keep Horford when the time comes?
And Joe Johnson is a free agent in a couple years.

This is too many years and more than his market value.

Good for him and the Hawks..Everyone keeps bringing up the debate about him being picked over Chris Paul and Deron Williams..Plz, ur beating a dead horse to the ground..Dude could avg. 20+ a game if coach Woodson actually ran plays for him instead of just running “Iso-Joe Johnson” all the time. Plus he’s only 23 and they keep there young core together..So good move IMO.

  • tavoris

thank u no id…Marvin Williams gets 15 ppg as the Hawks 5th Option (6th is Flip is rolling that day)…he’s worked hard 2 become a better all around player. Sure, the hawks screwed up by picking him up…but it wasn’t like he’s Darko or anything.

and BTW, he’s MUCH better than Varejo.

  • mj23

Hawks would be foolish to let a young talent like Marvin walk away. I think he can be a Mashburn type of player. He has the skill set and body. He is better than Bogut who was picked #1.

  • http://nationofmillions.ca ciolkstar

I think Marvin’s biggest fault is that he got drafted ahead of Deron and CP3, he hasn’t blown up the way some suspected but he’s big and can shot. He’s like Tim Thomas with heart. Personally, I like the signing.

He was a terrible pick.. and this is a terrible signing.. period. GOOD JOB, ATL.. you just set yourself back 5 years!!! LMAO!!!

  • tavoris

I agree ciolkstar…and if ATL didn’t re-sign him, he woulda waltzed right to Boston for a year (with the money big baby wants)…

  • tavoris

funny that evrybody still blasts this pick. Has anyone considered how much a ball-dominating PG (Paul or Williams) would probably clash with a ball-dominating SG (Johnson)? They need a back-to-the-basket center more than they need a PG (since they run the offense thru JJ anyway)

    Man, wages are getting ridiculous…

  • rikson

Those jersey-ads are coming mighty fast!
