Introducing the New, Lower Salary Cap

by Marcel Mutoni

As expected, with the world economy being what it is, the NBA’s salary cap was reduced for the ‘09-’10 season.

Here’s the official press release from the L:

The National Basketball Association today announced that the Salary Cap for the 2009-10 season will be $57.7 million. The tax level for the 2009-10 season has been set at $69.92 million. Any team whose team salary exceeds that figure will pay a $1 tax for each $1 by which it exceeds $69.92 million.

The 2008-09 Salary Cap was $58.68 million and the tax level was $71.15 million. Although league-wide revenue increased 2.5% this past season, the decrease in the Salary Cap and tax level for the 2009-10 season is the result of the formula used to set the Cap and tax under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement,

The mid-level exception, a friend to GMs everywhere, is now set at $5.85 million.

All in all, it’s not entirely bad news for NBA teams. A difference of about $1 million in cap space between this year and last year won’t change a whole lot League wide.

It will likely be the marginal players - many of whom are sweating it out in the Summer Leagues - who will feel the financial pinch the most, since there will be less jobs to go around.

The marginal players are exactly what it’s about to me :( if you only like the stars, then you don’t really love the league

  • Anton Posted: Jul.8 at 9:08 am
Where’s the Laker tie-in to this story?

  • Hursty Posted: Jul.8 at 9:08 am
    Cool beans I guess.

  • Hursty Posted: Jul.8 at 9:12 am
I honestly have ‘no’ idea what you might mean by that Anton, just because this is written by Marcel. Sheesh.

  • Jukai Posted: Jul.8 at 9:17 am
Kobe is better than Lebron and equal to Jordan. Lebron has no skill, all his scoring and passing and leadership is all physical skill, and if I was his size and speed, I could do wayyy betterin a game than he does. Jordan is amazing but Kobe’s a better scorer and passer you’d realize this if he played on another team outside the triangle.

  • nicko Posted: Jul.8 at 9:19 am
    trade david stern for shaq!!!

For the briefest of moments, I’d forgotten the subject of the link I clicked on and almost argued with Jukai’s comment.

  • Gerard Himself Posted: Jul.8 at 9:39 am
    good post Hisham.

  • rav Posted: Jul.8 at 9:40 am
somewhere melo is loving the fact that he signed a 5 year extension when bron/wade/bosh only signed 3 year +1 deals

  • Hisham Posted: Jul.8 at 9:42 am
jukai made me laugh with that one, even though he’s made that same joke 45617630121435214102402042402573684124570420 times already. good for you jukai!

  • Hisham Posted: Jul.8 at 9:43 am
Dank je Gerard. Rotweer vandaag he?

  • Hursty Posted: Jul.8 at 9:49 am
You know, for a subject as serious as the Salary Cap, you guys take this far too lightly. Kobe is probably trying to figure out the intracies and ramnifications of this right now.
    Take this seriously!!!!

  • Mendel Posted: Jul.8 at 9:52 am
@ Jukai, put the bong down or where a hat when your outside, cause something is screwing with your head. Kobe = Jordan. Get the fu(k outta here.

  • Jukai Posted: Jul.8 at 9:54 am
Kobe is in his basement right now doing Jeet Kune Do while listening to Michael Jackson CDs, Hursty. Winning is his money!!!!

  • Zach Lowe Posted: Jul.8 at 9:59 am
    kobe > cherokee parks

  • Hisham Posted: Jul.8 at 9:59 am
come on Mendel you know better than that

  • Marco Posted: Jul.8 at 10:00 am
Jukai don’t you remember the Rudy T Lakers?they didn’t use the triangle and kobe had always 2 or 3 defenders on him.It was a infernal year for him.He didn’t even broke the 30ppg and he was at his physical peak, at 27.
BTW i agree on the skill part

  • Jukai Posted: Jul.8 at 10:04 am
Marco: Sorry I can’t hear you all I can hear is Kobe Bryant scoring 81 poitns and how Jordan never did that oh yeah that’s it sorry.

  • Gerard Himself Posted: Jul.8 at 10:06 am
zeker! (I can never get used to seeing someone writing in dutch here haha!)

  • Gerard Himself Posted: Jul.8 at 10:09 am
sh*t Gerard I suddenly have your personal info in front of me, including your e-mail address, and I’m posting as you! was wondering when that would happen to me. By the way this is Hisham. All Jukai’s fault for trying to mess with people’s brains

  • Gerard Himself Posted: Jul.8 at 10:09 am
Gerard I am posting as you

  • Gerard Himself Posted: Jul.8 at 10:11 am
Does this mean that people can see my e-mail address too?

  • Marco Posted: Jul.8 at 10:12 am
Indeed jukai I said that i agree on the skills part.I only don’t think that life for kobe would be easier out of the triangle

  • Gerard Himself Posted: Jul.8 at 10:13 am
    I feel like a Nets fan… so…cold…so…lonely…

  • Jukai Posted: Jul.8 at 10:13 am
    lalalal 81 lalalala

  • Hursty Posted: Jul.8 at 10:14 am
Marco - DUDE! Don’t be such a damn playa hater ok man? We’re trying to express developed, sensible thoughts here. If you want to be unreasonable, just don’t say anything. That, or you can sit in the corner, as we ridicule your outlandish statements.

  • Marco Posted: Jul.8 at 10:14 am
I truly believe that Kobe is the most skilled player EVER, the best offensive player that has ever played a game and the est one-on-one player of all times.
And he is waaaaay better of lebron

  • Hisham Posted: Jul.8 at 10:15 am
    OK i’m back. Sorry Gerard.

  • Jukai Posted: Jul.8 at 10:29 am
Marco: haha yeah Lebrick SHAMES amiright?

  • Hursty Posted: Jul.8 at 10:34 am
G0d damnit Marco. Get over yourself already!
We don’t appreciate your blatant one-sidedness here. Kobe is NOT better than Rick Astley, regardless of whatever your brain may think.
I can’t take the moronic nature of comments here any longer.
Marco, you sir, just lost yourself a potential supporter against the armies of satirical, sarcastic people that grace the interwebs.
Good DAY to you young man!
    Much love,
    Hursty.

  • Jukai Posted: Jul.8 at 10:37 am

Marco: YEAHHH Le Brick SHAMES amiright?

  • Statik Posted: Jul.8 at 12:06 pm
Ha it just wouldn’t be a good posting day without Kobe and Bron in the comments…wonder how many GMs are looking for the best way to strip the marginal players off the books so they dont have to pay the extra tax

  • Young Chris MP3 Posted: Jul.8 at 12:51 pm
    Kobe’s better than Jordan now.

  • Gerwin Posted: Jul.8 at 1:48 pm
Very weird to read Nederlands in this post. Indeed slecht weer vandaag ;-). Ik tel nu al vier NL-ers op dit forum! Dope!

  • Gerwin Posted: Jul.8 at 1:50 pm
BTW Hisham, totally agree with the first post you made. “If you only like the stars, then you don’t really love the league.”

  • Gerwin Posted: Jul.8 at 1:51 pm
BTW, gotta agree with the first post you made Hisham. Very true..

  • Gerwin Posted: Jul.8 at 1:52 pm
Something is wrong with Firefox, so posted the same sort of comment twice…

  • Clay Posted: Jul.8 at 1:59 pm
Kobe’s a dick - I hope Ron punches that chump real hard right in the face this summer Paul Pierce is better than Kobe
    Play with that!

  • Clay Posted: Jul.8 at 2:03 pm
No more talking about Mr Ball Hog! And I better not see that guy on the cover again any time soon.
(OK he can have his Finals MVP cover but that’s it)

  • Clay Posted: Jul.8 at 2:04 pm
By the way, this article sucks.
    How ’bout some real news?

  • E. Posted: Jul.8 at 2:26 pm
@Jukai and the rest of the kids. I can tell you children were probably not watching MIKE when he played. All u see is YouTube or espn highlights.

  • Jukai Posted: Jul.8 at 2:38 pm
E: I can tell you don’t post much here.

  • Dutch Rich Posted: Jul.8 at 2:47 pm
Grappig verhaal van die salaris pet. In Gotham schijnt de zon trouwens.

  • Allenp Posted: Jul.8 at 3:00 pm
    Another Kobe, Lebron, Jordan discussion?
Seriously, step away from the keyboard.

  • Young Chris MP3 Posted: Jul.8 at 3:53 pm
Kobe’s the best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be. Michael Jordan is old. His best days are behind him. Kobe’s time is now. If Mike played today Kobe would score 40 on him.

  • Young Chris MP3 Posted: Jul.8 at 3:54 pm
Kobe just won his fourth ring and his first Finals MVP. How can anyone question his place on top of the games all-time list?

  • Young Chris MP3 Posted: Jul.8 at 3:58 pm
Kobe just won his fourth ring and while he didn’t have to single-handedly carry Shaq to another championship (because we all know Shaq would have never won anything without Kobe), he still had to carry Lamar Odom and Pau Gasol who are almost just as awful as O’Neal. Seriously, if he can win with such a lack of talent, he must be better than Jordan ever was. Jordan had Pippen for all six rings. It wasn’t as if he had to carry a Shaquille O’Neal or a Lamar Odom around. And we all know that Pau Gasol isn’t in Toni Kukoc or Luc Longley’s league. Now let’s watch him work a miracle and bring Ron Artest to relevance after years of mediocrity.

  • Stephen Bayer Posted: Jul.8 at 4:04 pm
loo loo loo i got some apples loo loo loo, you got some too!

  • E. Posted: Jul.8 at 4:13 pm
Young Chris we were talking about players in their PRIME. NO sh!t MJ’s best days are behind him…he’s retired. I can just tell how long u watched bball. How did Kobe carry Shaq when Shaq was the one getting the Finals MVP awards in each of the 3 finals together. Shaq even got it during the season. You rate Shaq from what you see today. Sad. Maybe you should read the new G.O.A.T Mag.

  • Stephen Bayer Posted: Jul.8 at 4:29 pm
Oh yeah young chris, well if Kobe and MJ played twenty years ago, MJ would kick his fuking as$!!! 26 year old MJ > 10 year old kobe…just like……wait….. 30 year old kobe > 46 year old MJ. way to blow one out of the water that Kobe is, right now, better than MJ is, right now. By the way we all know Shaq, Gasol, and Odom are fuking garbage duuuuhhhhhh. MJ lucked out he was paired with such a dynamic force like Luc Longely. As a matter of fact, Longely carried Jordan to those titles.

  • Stephen Bayer Posted: Jul.8 at 4:32 pm
oh man, Young Chris is soooo right. Wow, why did I never realize it…Kobe truley is god. Not only could is he currently better than a 46 year old Michael Jordan…but he also carried some no-name loser bums to titles: Shaq (THREE TIMES!), Odom, Gasol. Michael Jordan is nothing compared to Kobe…as a matter of fact, Luc Longely carried MJ to those titles.

  • RV Posted: Jul.8 at 4:49 pm
just an FYI….houston was granted an injury exception for Yao and that’s what theye will be using to sign Ariza, so they still have their MLE to use..

  • s.e.a.n Posted: Jul.8 at 5:27 pm
UNRELATED! Hursty, no hard feelings, but I, just, don’t, like, you.

  • nate the great Posted: Jul.8 at 6:29 pm
HAHAH at Chris Mp3. this is that was the was stupid. haha. everything you said.
who ever says kobe is or will be better than mj someday doesnt know basketball. at all.
Kobe is good, dont get me wrong, he has raw talent and is amazing, but their is no way he is better than Mj.
Jukia says 81 points puts him above michael, but that doesnt really mean sh!t. honestly, it doesnt.
this season we saw like 5 people scoring above 50 points.
we had roy, kevin martin, dwade, lebron, kobe.
the only one to impress me was wade. he scored 55 against a top notch defence team in orlando.
so 81 against a sh!tty toronto means nothing.

  • nate the great Posted: Jul.8 at 6:30 pm
oh and lebrick does suck. kobe is way better than bron. i hate lebron.
so yeah. but kobe will not be better than mj. ever. and i think he even knows that.

  • Negetivekreep Posted: Jul.8 at 7:16 pm
Kobe haterade has ALWAYS been a common theme among “east coast” SLAM fans since back in the day, u guys will never give it up. WESTSIDE.

  • Rusty Posted: Jul.8 at 7:42 pm
I think the real question is, Who would win in a knife fight? Lebrick with his physical prowess or Kobe with his superior strength?

  • Rusty Posted: Jul.8 at 7:43 pm
    superior skill*

  • Marco Posted: Jul.8 at 8:19 pm
so hursty let’s discuss the topic.First:I believe that Bryant is the most skilled player on offense of all time.If you disagree tell me one player which can find so many ways of putting a ball into the basket.Even MJ didn’t have Kobe’s arsenal.Second:in 2004-2005, the year without using the triangle,, kobe had the ball something like 99% of time but had only 27.6 ppg.The subsequent year, with p-jax, he averaged 35.4.In 04-05 he also had his third worse shooting average of career, the worst since 1999.And he had more than 4 turnovers pg, by far his worst average of his career.
So tell me, what is the best sistem, the triangle or the offense that tomjanovic designed for Bryant in 05?

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Jul.8 at 8:29 pm
Guys… The Lakers and Kobe and Jordan have nothing to do with this post! Dammit Juk, stop being sarcastic on the internet… It doesn’t work all the time. I blame Anton too.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Jul.8 at 9:14 pm
On a side note, some dumb@ss on youtube said, “There are no good Canadian rappers. Main Source? He’s nobody.” I don’t know whether I should be angry or just laugh like crazy.

  • Hursty Posted: Jul.8 at 9:21 pm
    s.e.a.n - no worries mate.
Marco - I really really hope you understand that everything Jukai, Anton, Young Chris and I said was purely to rile up an arguement - and we achieved it.
Kobe’s the 2nd best shooting guard of all-time. Behind Mike.
I’m not going to slam a guy down for believing what he does (such as your 8.19 post).
PS I’m saying the Triangle - because he’d been in that system for over half a decade or something, executing it successfully.

  • Blinguo Posted: Jul.8 at 10:49 pm
Moka Only is also a good Canadian emcee Teddy, but why are you getting angry at youtube comments? 95% of the time they are just crazy nonsense flames. The classic example of worst commenters on the internet.

  • Blinguo Posted: Jul.8 at 10:53 pm
Now how can anyone hate Hursty? I mean he did give no reason and a half dozen commas, but still.
I guess I hate the new salary cap because SLAM commenters read it as Kobe Vs MJ Vs Bron, nobody has ever done this before. Jukai should have made his satire post in ALL CAPS as usual, to get less of the whoosh-over the head comments directed at him and that topic.

  • marco Posted: Jul.9 at 2:38 am
    i have to pee

  • melvin ely Posted: Jul.9 at 2:58 am
    wow slamonline got troll’d

  • Stephen Bayer Posted: Jul.9 at 3:26 am
damn i always screw up on here and accidently post something twice

  • Hursty Posted: Jul.9 at 4:22 am
Blinguo I’m not exactly sure what to make of it either so meh. (As to whether your comment was rude towards me I dunno either?)

  • Young Chris MP3 Posted: Jul.9 at 8:15 am
The fact that there were those who took offense at my blatant and poor attempt at sarcasm and called me out for talking blasphemy leaves me worried.

  • Young Chris MP3 Posted: Jul.9 at 8:18 am
    And Marco, I disagree.

  • Young Chris MP3 Posted: Jul.9 at 8:18 am
In fact, I’m going to direct the blasphemous claims your way after that post.

  • Spaceship Jay Posted: Jul.9 at 9:40 am
Mmmmm, suckered in by a Jukai rant. Nice.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Jul.9 at 10:14 pm
What’s kind of bogus is how Reggie Miller didn’t crack the top 50 in SLAM… I’m not just saying that to start an argument. I’m freakin serious. Don’t give me that “he was only a 3 point shooter!” crap. First of all, he was probably the best 3 point shooter ever. Second of all, if you’re saying he’s only a shooter, you’re saying that Jason Kapono and Mike Miller are on par with Reggie-freaking-Miller. That’s BS. Reggie is a top 50 guy hands down. Oh yeah and did I mention how CLUTCH he was?

  • Blaze Posted: Jul.10 at 9:31 am
Just read Jukais comment and just have to say you are a f*ck!ng retard… seriously nothing else to say <3

  • SK Posted: Jul.10 at 6:59 pm
Is the Tax Level a part of the CBA like the salary cap is? It’s odd that the NBA didn’t ease the Tax Level pressure off the owners a bit in an economic down year, or even mention the possibility. If it goes down again next year, the Free Agent signings could be slower even with all the star ree agents.

  • Canuck Posted: Jul.12 at 2:00 pm
Why is sarcasm so difficult for some people?

  • 'chaps' Posted: Jul.12 at 2:15 pm
I can do that too homie
..lebron is outta this world nobody can see him kobe wouldn’t be able to see lebron even on his best day
