Introducing the New, Lower Salary Cap

by Marcel Mutoni

As expected, with the world economy being what it is, the NBA’s salary cap was reduced for the ’09-’10 season.

Here’s the official press release from the L:

The National Basketball Association today announced that the Salary Cap for the 2009-10 season will be $57.7 million. The tax level for the 2009-10 season has been set at $69.92 million. Any team whose team salary exceeds that figure will pay a $1 tax for each $1 by which it exceeds $69.92 million.

The 2008-09 Salary Cap was $58.68 million and the tax level was $71.15 million. Although league-wide revenue increased 2.5% this past season, the decrease in the Salary Cap and tax level for the 2009-10 season is the result of the formula used to set the Cap and tax under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement,

The mid-level exception, a friend to GMs everywhere, is now set at $5.85 million.

All in all, it’s not entirely bad news for NBA teams. A difference of about $1 million in cap space between this year and last year won’t change a whole lot League wide.

It will likely be the marginal players – many of whom are sweating it out in the Summer Leagues – who will feel the financial pinch the most, since there will be less jobs to go around.

    Another Kobe, Lebron, Jordan discussion?
Seriously, step away from the keyboard.

  • http://www.twitter.com/Th3_R3al_Chris Young Chris MP3

Kobe’s the best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be. Michael Jordan is old. His best days are behind him. Kobe’s time is now. If Mike played today Kobe would score 40 on him.

  • http://www.twitter.com/Th3_R3al_Chris Young Chris MP3

Kobe just won his fourth ring and his first Finals MVP. How can anyone question his place on top of the games all-time list?

  • http://www.twitter.com/Th3_R3al_Chris Young Chris MP3

Kobe just won his fourth ring and while he didn’t have to single-handedly carry Shaq to another championship (because we all know Shaq would have never won anything without Kobe), he still had to carry Lamar Odom and Pau Gasol who are almost just as awful as O’Neal. Seriously, if he can win with such a lack of talent, he must be better than Jordan ever was. Jordan had Pippen for all six rings. It wasn’t as if he had to carry a Shaquille O’Neal or a Lamar Odom around. And we all know that Pau Gasol isn’t in Toni Kukoc or Luc Longley’s league. Now let’s watch him work a miracle and bring Ron Artest to relevance after years of mediocrity.

loo loo loo i got some apples loo loo loo, you got some too!

  • E.

Young Chris we were talking about players in their PRIME. NO sh!t MJ’s best days are behind him…he’s retired. I can just tell how long u watched bball. How did Kobe carry Shaq when Shaq was the one getting the Finals MVP awards in each of the 3 finals together. Shaq even got it during the season. You rate Shaq from what you see today. Sad. Maybe you should read the new G.O.A.T Mag.

  • Stephen Bayer

Oh yeah young chris, well if Kobe and MJ played twenty years ago, MJ would kick his fuking as$!!! 26 year old MJ > 10 year old kobe…just like……wait….. 30 year old kobe > 46 year old MJ. way to blow one out of the water that Kobe is, right now, better than MJ is, right now. By the way we all know Shaq, Gasol, and Odom are fuking garbage duuuuhhhhhh. MJ lucked out he was paired with such a dynamic force like Luc Longely. As a matter of fact, Longely carried Jordan to those titles.

  • Stephen Bayer

oh man, Young Chris is soooo right. Wow, why did I never realize it…Kobe truley is god. Not only could is he currently better than a 46 year old Michael Jordan…but he also carried some no-name loser bums to titles: Shaq (THREE TIMES!), Odom, Gasol. Michael Jordan is nothing compared to Kobe…as a matter of fact, Luc Longely carried MJ to those titles.

just an FYI….houston was granted an injury exception for Yao and that’s what theye will be using to sign Ariza, so they still have their MLE to use..

UNRELATED! Hursty, no hard feelings, but I, just, don’t, like, you.

  • http://www.broy7.com nate the great

HAHAH at Chris Mp3. this is that was the was stupid. haha. everything you said.
who ever says kobe is or will be better than mj someday doesnt know basketball. at all.
Kobe is good, dont get me wrong, he has raw talent and is amazing, but their is no way he is better than Mj.
Jukia says 81 points puts him above michael, but that doesnt really mean sh!t. honestly, it doesnt.
this season we saw like 5 people scoring above 50 points.
we had roy, kevin martin, dwade, lebron, kobe.
the only one to impress me was wade. he scored 55 against a top notch defence team in orlando.
so 81 against a sh!tty toronto means nothing.

  • http://www.broy7.com nate the great

oh and lebrick does suck. kobe is way better than bron. i hate lebron.
so yeah. but kobe will not be better than mj. ever. and i think he even knows that.

  • http://slamonline Negetivekreep

Kobe haterade has ALWAYS been a common theme among “east coast” SLAM fans since back in the day, u guys will never give it up.

    WESTSIDE.

  • Rusty

I think the real question is, Who would win in a knife fight? Lebrick with his physical prowess or Kobe with his superior strength?

  • Rusty

    superior skill*

  • Marco

so hursty let’s discuss the topic.First:I believe that Bryant is the most skilled player on offense of all time.If you disagree tell me one player which can find so many ways of putting a ball into the basket.Even MJ didn’t have Kobe’s arsenal.Second:in 2004-2005, the year without using the triangle,, kobe had the ball something like 99% of time but had only 27.6 ppg.The subsequent year, with p-jax, he averaged 35.4.In 04-05 he also had his third worse shooting average of career, the worst since 1999.And he had more than 4 turnovers pg, by far his worst average of his career.
So tell me, what is the best sistem, the triangle or the offense that tomjanovic designed for Bryant in 05?

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Guys… The Lakers and Kobe and Jordan have nothing to do with this post! Dammit Juk, stop being sarcastic on the internet… It doesn’t work all the time. I blame Anton too.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

On a side note, some dumb@ss on youtube said, “There are no good Canadian rappers. Main Source? He’s nobody.” I don’t know whether I should be angry or just laugh like crazy.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

    s.e.a.n – no worries mate.
Marco – I really really hope you understand that everything Jukai, Anton, Young Chris and I said was purely to rile up an arguement – and we achieved it.
Kobe’s the 2nd best shooting guard of all-time. Behind Mike.
I’m not going to slam a guy down for believing what he does (such as your 8.19 post).
PS I’m saying the Triangle – because he’d been in that system for over half a decade or something, executing it successfully.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Blinguo

Moka Only is also a good Canadian emcee Teddy, but why are you getting angry at youtube comments? 95% of the time they are just crazy nonsense flames. The classic example of worst commenters on the internet.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Blinguo

Now how can anyone hate Hursty? I mean he did give no reason and a half dozen commas, but still.
I guess I hate the new salary cap because SLAM commenters read it as Kobe Vs MJ Vs Bron, nobody has ever done this before. Jukai should have made his satire post in ALL CAPS as usual, to get less of the whoosh-over the head comments directed at him and that topic.

  • marco

    i have to pee

  • http://www.slamonline.com melvin ely

    wow slamonline got troll’d

  • Stephen Bayer

damn i always screw up on here and accidently post something twice

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

Blinguo I’m not exactly sure what to make of it either so meh. (As to whether your comment was rude towards me I dunno either?)

  • http://www.twitter.com/Th3_R3al_Chris Young Chris MP3

The fact that there were those who took offense at my blatant and poor attempt at sarcasm and called me out for talking blasphemy leaves me worried.

  • http://www.twitter.com/Th3_R3al_Chris Young Chris MP3

    And Marco, I disagree.

  • http://www.twitter.com/Th3_R3al_Chris Young Chris MP3

In fact, I’m going to direct the blasphemous claims your way after that post.

  • http://Slamonline.com Spaceship Jay

Mmmmm, suckered in by a Jukai rant. Nice.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

What’s kind of bogus is how Reggie Miller didn’t crack the top 50 in SLAM… I’m not just saying that to start an argument. I’m freakin serious. Don’t give me that “he was only a 3 point shooter!” crap. First of all, he was probably the best 3 point shooter ever. Second of all, if you’re saying he’s only a shooter, you’re saying that Jason Kapono and Mike Miller are on par with Reggie-freaking-Miller. That’s BS. Reggie is a top 50 guy hands down. Oh yeah and did I mention how CLUTCH he was?

  • Blaze

Just read Jukais comment and just have to say you are a f*ck!ng retard… seriously nothing else to say <3

  • SK

Is the Tax Level a part of the CBA like the salary cap is? It’s odd that the NBA didn’t ease the Tax Level pressure off the owners a bit in an economic down year, or even mention the possibility. If it goes down again next year, the Free Agent signings could be slower even with all the star ree agents.

  • Canuck

Why is sarcasm so difficult for some people?

  • ‘chaps’

I can do that too homie
..lebron is outta this world nobody can see him kobe wouldn’t be able to see lebron even on his best day
