JR Smith is Going to Jail

    by Marcel Mutoni

Talk about a crappy way to spend your summer vacation.

Nuggets guard J.R. Smith, who was involved in a car accident two years ago that ended the life of his friend, Andre Bell, is headed to the hole for about a month. He will also serve 500 community hours. This was Smith`s second reckless driving offense.

The Denver Post has the reactions:

Smith has 20 days to appeal the sentence, but his attorney, Kevin Hexstall, said that is unlikely. “It was what we expected,” Hexstall told The Denver Post by phone Tuesday night. “We knew he had an issue with respect to his driving record, which caused him to be exposed to the 90 days. The important thing is, he wanted to put this matter behind him.

According to Hexstall, Bell’s mother, Wanda, considered “J.R. to be like a son” and wrote a letter stating she did not want Smith to go to jail. Bell’s family has filed a wrongful death suit against Smith. “It’s not like something like this happens and you just move on,” Smith said Tuesday during the hearing. “I can’t talk to ‘Dre…He’s still a part of me.” Smith also apologized directly to Wanda Bell, who then blew him a kiss. “I told her I wish the shoe was on the other foot,” Smith said in court.

Smith, who re-upped with the Nuggets last year, was taken into custody immediately after the hearing last night.

Wow. I wondered what was going to come out of this case when it happened. Heck, if I killed a friend in any way I think 30 days in jail would be the least of my concerns… what an awful situation.

Watch out for your cornhole, bud.

    • Hisham Posted: Jul.1 at 9:15 am
      Damn…

    • Hisham Posted: Jul.1 at 9:16 am
I can’t believe the mom is so forgiving. It’s a good thing, I guess, but doesn’t seem natural.

    • Ronak Posted: Jul.1 at 9:19 am
      imagine the courtyard basketball..

    • Pale Posted: Jul.1 at 9:31 am
How did this sentence conveniently fall during the off season? Something shady going on there.

    • Jukai Posted: Jul.1 at 9:39 am
I thought this was for that ‘upside down 3′ chicken bob thing he was doing in game 4

    • Spaceship Jay Posted: Jul.1 at 9:51 am
Lol, how cruel and in-sensitive of you Jukai. “Basketball wouldn’t be the same without Michael Jackson”- Lebron James, 2009 BET awards

    • BostonBaller Posted: Jul.1 at 10:01 am
The mom being “understanding” is not the strange part since the 2 boys were like brothers & she considered Smith a son but what is strange is that the Bell “family” is suing him. Is the mom a part of that suit? Is it Bell’s lady or baby momma suing? Hopefully Smith and Momma Bell keep in contact and continue their relationship.

    • Jukai Posted: Jul.1 at 10:14 am
BostonBaller: why ‘hopefully?’ I hope Momma Bell gets as far away from Smith as possible.

    • Rasheedionics Posted: Jul.1 at 10:14 am
Hey, I miss Michael as much as anybody but can we please stop giving him credit for everything that’s good in the world. There still would be basketball. There’s still would be rap and R&B music. There still would be wack rappers. There still would be iPod. There still would be texting. There still would be Wire and HBO.. Well, you get the point.

    • Young C Posted: Jul.1 at 10:26 am
Maybe LeBron got confused and thought it was the other MJ that died.

    • The Seed Posted: Jul.1 at 10:31 am
Smith should have gotten some YEARS in prison, because at the time of the accident, Smith had 27 points and five suspensions on his driver’s license. Between the time of the accident and October 2008, Smith had accumulated two more speeding tickets and three more suspensions and smith was charged with reckless driving, failure to obey a stop sign, improper passing, speeding and failure to wear a seat belt. Because this was his second reckless driving conviction, he faced 90 days in the Monmouth County jail in Freehold, but a man was killed because Smith drove around a car stopped at an intersection in Millstone and into the path of an oncoming vehicle.

    • AdrianC513 Posted: Jul.1 at 10:51 am
Lol At young C. I dont think it was done on purpose so why wouldn’t she forgive him? I wonder if he’ll get any jail house tats? I bet he’ll have a whole lot more street cred.

    • Jukai Posted: Jul.1 at 10:54 am
AdrianC513: Read what The Seed said, see if the dude has any real regrets about this.

    • RV Posted: Jul.1 at 11:25 am
the last thing smith needs is more tattoos..

    • Mendel Posted: Jul.1 at 11:29 am
      Thuggets

    • DP Posted: Jul.1 at 11:45 am
wow thats sad about the family and his boy. I respect dude for manning up about the whole thing and serving his time. JR is still kind of out there as far as his attitude goes but he is making progress. play wit it.

    • Michael Posted: Jul.1 at 12:13 pm
so to recap, he drove recklessly and as a result his friend died, and he goes to jail for 30 days, out in time for training camp when he can resume earning a 6 figure salary? Is that about it?

    • Diesel Posted: Jul.1 at 12:25 pm
1 month for killing someone? Didn’t the exact same thing happen to Hulk Hogan’s kid and he got a year?

    • Darksaber Posted: Jul.1 at 12:54 pm
in case it hasn’t been mentioned yet (yeah, right, it’s soooo obvious), anyone care to guess which gang is gonna welcome JR, he must have ALL the possible Tats scrawled allover himself, right?

    • Jukai Posted: Jul.1 at 1:10 pm
Diesel: And Hogans kid didn’t get two more speeding tickets immediately after the accident too!!
This is sort of b*llsh*t but oh well.

      IN MEMORY OF JR SMITH

    • Esco Posted: Jul.1 at 2:08 pm
He’ll most probably get some kind of suspension or fine from the L as the season opens up again. We’ll see. Stallworth also got 30 days in the bin and 1000 hours of community service. And he was drunk, so this is not unusual. I guess it depends on the circumstances. Still wreckless of him to continue driving crazily.

    • chazz michael michaels Posted: Jul.1 at 2:10 pm
jr goin to jail man dis sum stuff right here he gon serve up all them other dudes at the jail on the court id b scurred

    • nate the great Posted: Jul.1 at 2:15 pm
haha money says he wont spend time in a real jail/prison.
      .
wasnt t.i. supposed to be in jail? i thought i saw him at the atlanta playoff game.
      .
he is a athlete, and he gets special treatment, we all kno it happens. thats why this is in the offseason, this is why he will only serve 30 days.
      .
didnt that nfl player only get 30 days for killing a guy while drinkin and driving?
      .
money makes the world go round.

    • Kadavour Posted: Jul.1 at 2:26 pm
      1) He’s not going to be in a maximum security prison. obvious safety issues since he’s a celebrity. 2) Some idiot assumed that the rep from the Bell family who brought a suit against Smith must be his girl or “baby momma”. WTF?! 3) Co-sign Nate the Great. 4) LeBron is as dumb as he is strong. He has always been a very poor public speaker.

      Harsh words Kadavour. Harsh words.

    • Z Posted: Jul.1 at 4:22 pm
Some commenters here are just incredible. Wow.

    • truthteller Posted: Jul.1 at 5:00 pm
We all can’t act like Michael jackson didn’t have an impact on the woorld of music and the culture as a whole. Anyone who talks like Rasheedionics definately doesn’t know what they are talking about.

    • cp Posted: Jul.1 at 5:09 pm
dang. i was born in da same city he was

    • Rusty Posted: Jul.1 at 5:52 pm
Please 90 30 days, the dude sped through a stop sign and killed someone and then picked up two tickets since the accident plus his previous drivung history. shoulda been 30 months.

    • Hollywud15 Posted: Jul.1 at 6:06 pm
Free Jr Swishh!!! hopefully he kills prison ball, gets a few more tats, and comes back better than ever

    • Orlando Woolridge Posted: Jul.1 at 6:17 pm
@DP Respect him for manning up? Something tells me he wouldn’t “man up” if he had the opportunity to get away with it. He deserves the jail time, but the last thing he deserves here is respect.

    • JoeMaMa Posted: Jul.1 at 7:16 pm
Well if he was any richer he would’ve bought his way out of his mess like MJ did.
But if The Seed’s comment is true, he should be getting at least 5 years and EVERYONE HERE SHOULD BOO HIS WACK SELF

    • donlaker Posted: Jul.1 at 7:17 pm
do you think this dude sould hire a driver…
j r dont pick up the soap … and i cant wait to see his jailhouse tats

    • donlaker Posted: Jul.1 at 7:21 pm
should, yes he should hire driver

    • Holy Baller Posted: Jul.1 at 7:26 pm
I really like Mendel’s name. Thuggets. I can see that man. I mean they got Carmelo “Punch a guy and run” Anthony, then Kenyon Martin who is just straight up gangster, and also Birdman who is the scariest looking man in the NBA aside from Robert Swift, who looks like a child molester.

    • Exile Posted: Jul.1 at 8:12 pm
Pistons got Gordon and Charlie V.

    • Jukai Posted: Jul.1 at 8:31 pm
I would like Z to tell us which comments he takes offense to. No one should be sticking up for JR on this one.

    • Jukai Posted: Jul.1 at 8:32 pm
Also, Dumars is incredible. Ben G -and- Charlie V? Get out of here.

    • simmy sosa Posted: Jul.1 at 8:35 pm
      Let the rebuilding begin.

    • Holy Baller Posted: Jul.1 at 9:52 pm
Jukai: Personally I take offense to the talks of Michael Jackson and LeBron, because of irrelevancy, and also the dude who claimed he was from the same city. Because that’s just such an accomplishment.

    • chintao Posted: Jul.1 at 10:01 pm
@ BostonBaller Posted: Jul.1 at 10:01 am ==> Although Smith is the name defendant, the case will be defended by his insurance company, which also will pay any judgment or settlement.

    • chintao Posted: Jul.1 at 10:14 pm
@ BostonBaller Posted: Jul.1 at 10:01 am ==> Although Smith is the named defendant, the family of the deceased is actually suing J.R.’s insurance company, which will pay the legal fees and any settlement reached or judgment awarded.

    • chintao Posted: Jul.1 at 10:15 pm
      What’s up? Am I banned?

    • badnews Posted: Jul.1 at 11:37 pm
jukai, do you really think that’s a gang sign he’s throwing up.?. I bet he’s doesn’t even know what he is doing in the youtube clip…

    • tealish Posted: Jul.2 at 12:47 am
Michael: Pretty much, except it’s 7 digits not 6.

    • Andrew Posted: Jul.2 at 1:23 am
I can’t/could never/will never stand Michael Jackson. I didn’t grow up listening to his music, don’t think he’s as great as everyone says he is and think it’s just dumb to keep RIP-ing him in every totally non-related forum. If you liked him, word, good for you but this comment section is about JR Smith going to jail. NOTHING AT ALL TO DO WITH MICHAEL JACKSON. AT ALL! So… SHUT THE HECK UP ABOUT IT! I’M SICK OF HEARING ABOUT IT EVERYWHERE! p.s. I know people feel differently about him and whatever but PLEASE… Leave it to entertainment and music pages.

    • DG Posted: Jul.2 at 1:58 am
if this was the nfl he would be kicked out for a while

    • Anton Posted: Jul.2 at 3:54 am
      lol @ Jukai

    • WaterBoy Posted: Jul.2 at 4:23 am
God damn it.JR u gonna be comfortable then your home :D

    • The Seed Posted: Jul.2 at 7:05 am
JoeMaMa, my 10:31am comment is true, research JR Smith driving history yourself or google articles about the accident. He should be getting YEARS, and everybody taking up him is WACK.

    • Anton Posted: Jul.2 at 7:47 am
      Mama there goes that thug

    • Jukai Posted: Jul.2 at 9:32 am
badnews: no, I just think he’s a thoughtless, reckless idiot who murdered his friend and has no regrets about it. One would think if you took a human life swirving into another lane to make a light, you wouldn’t get a speeding ticket for 40 miles over the speed limit a month or so immediately afterwards. But yeah, poor JR Smith, my prayers go out to him!

    • riggs Posted: Jul.2 at 11:15 am
      @Andrew: RIP Michael jackson.

    • T Money Posted: Jul.2 at 12:21 pm
      @Jukai. Need a hug?

    • Jukai Posted: Jul.2 at 2:16 pm
      T Money: yes.

    • Jacob Posted: Jul.2 at 3:44 pm
damn! slamfan4life beat me to it….dammit!

    • Blaze Posted: Jul.2 at 5:17 pm
Its too bad for him because jail sucks. I think he paid-off the friend’s mom. Although she lost her son, she may never have money problems again. Stupid people dont learn from their mistakes, you would think he would keep quiet after something like this. Oh, and cp, I was born in the same city as Dan Dickau, hows that for some street cred.

    • AOCPR Posted: Jul.2 at 5:30 pm
JR is going to get his Denzel ‘He Got Game’ swag on, except he wont have Denzel’s nasty-ass jumper.

    • Rusty Posted: Jul.2 at 8:59 pm
I bet denzel would beat his ass down but

    • Robb Posted: Jul.2 at 9:16 pm
      Thuggets indeed

    • brandon g. Posted: Jul.3 at 1:06 am
the real question is, why the hell is this muthafucka still driving?

    • thewize Posted: Jul.3 at 1:45 pm
      ‘J.R Doin’ Time’

    • onions baby onions Posted: Jul.3 at 11:22 pm
for any canadians out there, this is eerily similar to the dany heatley nhl case, minus the jail time obv

    • JBO Posted: Jan.18 at 4:54 am
I hate Jr smith,I hope everything bad happens to him. He only gets a 50,000 fine,24 days in jail, a couple of hundred hrs of community service(by the way,its already part of his job) and a 7 game suspension?WTF…….He has a history of reckless driving. He’s not even remorseful. If any normal person(not rich),we would be doing 10-30 years easily.I wonder why he still has his drivers license and is not doing more time jail?I wonder why the nba has not banned him yet?Whats really funny is that David stern has indefinately suspend Arenas for bringing a gun to a locker room but only suspends JR for 7 games.
