2004 NBA Draft Remix

Where Orlando worked their magic.

by Jeff Fox

Hindsight - a best friend to writers and Monday morning quarterbacks the world over; worst of enemies to sport’s GMs. It’s easy for use to sit back after the fact and criticize a trade or draft pick that some “bonehead” GM made. It would be a whole different story to have to make the decision based only on a forecast of the future like a GM does. Also, our future employment and ability to support our families don’t depend on these decisions like it does for the poor GM. BOO HOO. That is why NBA GMs get all the money, power and respect and we don’t, so they can suck it up and deal with our slings and arrows.

In that vein, Draft 365 is embarking on an ambitious project of “remixing” drafts from years gone past. We are starting with the 2004 Class, since we wanted to give players at least five years in the League before critiquing them. We are taking the top 10 picks from each draft and redrafting them, knowing what we know today about how each player’s career has unfolded. This is a list based strictly on a player’s talent and accomplishments. Without further ado, let us travel back to the magical year of 2004.

2004 NBA Draft

Grade: B

All-Stars: 3 (Dwight Howard, Devin Harris, Jameer Nelson)
Biggest Bust: Rafael Araujo, Toronto, pick No. 8
Second Round Steal: Trevor Ariza, New York, pick No. 43
Winning Team (in the long run): Orlando (Dwight Howard, Jameer Nelson)Dwight Howard

Pick No. 1 | Orlando Magic
Actual Selection: Dwight Howard
Draft 365 Remix: Dwight Howard (1)

There was a bit of debate heading into the draft whether Orlando should go with NCAA champion Emeka Okafor or unproven high school phenom Dwight Howard. Considering they were still playing this June, it’s obvious they made the right choice.

Pick No. 2 | Charlotte Bobcats
Actual Selection: Emeka Okafor
Draft 365 Remix: Al Jefferson (15)

Okafor has been a solid, consistent performer for the Bobcats so they can’t really complain about their pick too much. However, considering they were an expansion team with no expectations to win many games anytime soon, it would have made more sense to go with the much younger Jefferson, who has turned into an automatic 20 & 10 guy.

Pick No. 3 | Chicago Bulls
Actual Selection: Ben Gordon
Draft 365 Remix: Emeka Okafor (2)

Chicago’s main need right now? A reliable low-post big man. What would Okafor add to their roster? A reliable, low-post big man.

Pick No. 4 | Los Angeles Clippers
Actual Selection: Shaun Livingston
Draft 365 Remix: Andre Iguodala (9)

Could the Clippers not tell that Shaun Livingston was going to be fragile just by looking at him? An Urkel-like physique doesn’t usually ensure a prospect of a long NBA career. Iguodala, on the other hand, is a physical specimen who has only missed six games over his whole career.

Pick No. 5 | Washington Wizards
Actual Selection: Devin Harris
Draft 365 Remix: Jameer Nelson (20)

Both Harris and Nelson had breakout seasons this past year, but Jameer gets the nod due to his all-star selection and for playing for a far superior team.

Pick No. 6 | Atlanta Hawks
Actual Selection: Josh Childress
Draft 365 Remix: Josh Smith (17)

A swap of Joshes – Childress for Smith. While Smith is still maddeningly inconsistent and erratic, he is one of the most gifted players in the League, able to strike fear in opponent’s hearts at both ends of the floor. Childress is currently enjoying some souvlaki.

Pick No. 7 | Phoenix Suns
Actual Selection: Luol Deng
Draft 365 RemiRafael Araujox: Kevin Martin (26)

Out of the obscurity of the University of Western Carolina to the obscurity of the Sacramento Kings, Kevin Martin continues to do his thing in the shadows. Over the past three seasons Martin has established himself as on the L’s premier scorers.

Pick No. 8 | Toronto Raptors
Actual Selection: Rafael Araujo
Draft 365 Remix: Ben Gordon (3)

Hoffa Araujo was the biggest bust in the whole draft, even more so than Livingston. Ben Gordon, meanwhile, is the top career scorer from this draft class so far (and a hell of a lot richer than Hoffa).

Pick No. 9 | Philadelphia 76ers
Actual Selection: Andre Iguodala
Draft 365 Remix: Devin Harris (5)

If we remixed this draft again in another five years, Devin Harris would probably be up closer to his original spot at pick No.5. At the age of 25, he truly came into his own last season in the swamps of Jersey.

Pick No. 10 | Cleveland Cavaliers
Actual Selection: Luke Jackson
Draft 365 Remix: Andris Biedrins (11)

Cleveland didn’t find the whole draft thing quite as easy in 2004 as they did in 2003. Jackson is a poster child for a lottery bust, while Biedrins averaged 12 & 11 last season and is still only 23-years-old.

Barely missed the Top 10 Remix: Luol Deng, J.R. Smith, Josh Childress, Trevor Ariza.

Next on the Remix: The monumentally weak draft class of 2003!

Really well done, Jeff. Definitley Biedrins would have been a great piece for the Cavs today.

  • http://www.hoopsmanifesto.blogspot.com Jeff Fox

Thanks Eboy. I think Biedrins is a real underrated player – especially considering he is only 23-years-old still.

  • PArsons

2003 what a waste of draft night that must have been. I mean those guys were just HORRIBLE. Let’s nevr speak of that draft again…

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Yeah Jeff, for real, how are you going to get through the 2003 piece? It was craptacular to it’s fullest.

  • riggs

jeff comparing jameers first few years with devins when he was with the mavs, you think they really shouldve gone with jameer at that pick?

  • http://www.hoopsmanifesto.blogspot.com Jeff Fox

Its going to be hard to write about 2003 – such a weak year for talent!

  • http://slamonline.com Adam Fleischer

Good stuff, Jeff. Now that I’m looking back, this is actually a stronger and deeper class than I remembered. Gotta say, though, I think Devin Harris should be somewhere a bit higher and if Deng hadn’t been dealing with injuries I think he’s gotta get a top 10 look. Tough to say who would drop out, though.

  • WhaHos

Harris was an allstar last year

  • http://adfji.com Jukai

2003 may have been better if Lebron went to college

Childress cracks me up with his fro…instantly recognizable

  • http://www.hoopsmanifesto.blogspot.com Jeff Fox

I totally forgot Harris was an all-star last year – my bad as the kids say. Harris probably should be a bit higher but that’ll have to wait until we remix it again.

  • http://www.slamonline.com wayno

Yeah, Harris > Nelson. Good stuff though.

  • Young C

We couldnt even get a top 14 lottery redux?

  • http://www.hoopsmanifesto.blogspot.com Jeff Fox

I admit I’m having second thoughts about where I put Harris on the list, but too late now. Was going to do a top 14 lottery but I didn’t want the story to drag on too long – we plan on going back and doing it for plenty of drafts from years past so hopefully that makes up for it.

  • CASHVILLE

Livingston caught a bad break. (That was too easy) He was on his way until that freak accident. The same thing happened to Kenyon Martin. Twice. But hopefully he can bounce back like K Mart did. Speaking of K Mart, Kevin Martin is the real deal!

  • Chris

I hate to keep piling on the Harris thing, but your logic for Nelson over Harris (other than the all star thing which is a wash) is that Nelson played for a better team last year. Huh? So if Harris played for the magic this year and Nelson for the Nets, you would have said Harris should have been drafted higher?? I’m confused.

Love the concept though, keep ‘em coming.

  • http://www.hoopsmanifesto.blogspot.com Jeff Fox

Chris, I believe that a player that excels for a winning team is better than a player who excels for a weak team. Players who help their team win are more valuable than ones who don’t (in my world). But like I said, hindsight on my hindsight I probably should have put Harris above Nelson, or at least closer to him on the list.

  • http://www.rich-imaging.com Dutch Rich

Who’s the giant in back center??

  • nicko

who is that tall mo’flucka in the middle back of the picture???

  • http://www.hoopsmanifesto.blogspot.com Jeff Fox

The big guy must be Pavel Podkolzine – 7’5″.

  • http://www.rich-imaging.com Dutch Rich

    Pavel Podkolzine, apparently!

  • http://www.rich-imaging.com Dutch Rich

I have an echo today. thanks Jeff, I looked it up too.

  • Tuomas

Is there something wrong with me because I know that’s Pavel Podkolzine (will not bother google to spellcheck)? Mavs pick (or something), 7’5 tall. Turned out great, yeah.

  • Tuomas

    Ahh, beat me to it.

  • http://www.rich-imaging.com Dutch Rich

No videos found for “Pavel Podkolzine”

    haha

  • Tuomas

    No way!!!!! LOLLERSKATES

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/officerbarbrady what

Pretty much everyone listed here who went after Omafor is better than him, in particular Harris and J-Smoove.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Jeff, I disagree with the whole ‘winning’ thing. Some people are notorious losers that affect their team in a bad way (the Ricky Davises, and Zach Randolphs of this world). But that’s the minority. The truth is, it has a lot to do with luck and ending up on the right teams. Mo Williams didn’t get ‘better’ last year, he did the exact same things he has been doing in Milwaukee. But now he’s on TV all the time, he’s deep into the playoffs and he doesn’t have to take anything but open shots. Of course, he looks better. To me, if you’re a role player the key is getting on a team with enough stars to let you play your role. Then you look like a winner. Robert Horry’s and Derek Fisher’s would have looked way different if they had played with the for the Clips the last 10 years. Even Gasol, we’re applauding him now saying that he finally ‘gets it’. He has been doing the same things ever since the Memphis days. But he was miscast, he’s not a go-to, he’s a 2nd banana. But now, he’s a winner.

  • jdn41

Ummm didn’t harris play on a team that went for 55 wins plus each season he was there :S

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

I’ve never believed in the whole ‘winner’ tag. Would D-Fish lose the tag if he went to Sacramento tommorow? You’re either good at basketball or you’re not. Talent trumps everything. The only thing is that we put so much emphasis on scoring the basketball that we mistake guys like Ricky Davis and Nick Young as ‘talented’ even though they absolutely suck at anything else then putting the ball in the basket.

  • jdn41

kk that was an exageration but still 50 wins each season including a ridiculous 67 win

  • http://slamonline.com Adam Fleischer

Z, putting the ball in the basket is pretty important. In terms of the whole winner thing, I agree that it’s foolish to discredit a good player on a bad team, as seems to be the case in the Devin Harris Jameer Nelson debate. Harris will undoubtedly be the point guard on a winning team very soon, he just wasn’t this year. All that said, you can’t say that there’s no legitimacy to the concept of a “winner.” I’m not sure how much legitimacy there is, but I know there’s some. If Duncan had gone somewhere else in the ’97 Draft, he’d still have his rings.

  • http://slamonline.com/ niQ

Omg. Everytime I think of the 04 draft I die a little inside knowing how much the Raptors F’d up. On another note, who is “Pavel Podkolzine” and where is he now?

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com DP

The guy I love to hate on this list is Iggy. I swear you never know what he wants to do on the court. One game he will go out and put up a damn near triple double and then the next game follow up with horrible numbers. He is so up and down but yet I still love his game. I just feel that he is the player who could be an all star every year but he just is consistent enough. 76ers was his team the moment AI left but he needs to take that by the horns now and not let Miller always take control. play wit it.

  • https://slamonline.com Allenp

Wasn’t Devin Harris the point guard when the Mavs went to the Finals?
And didn’t he destroy Tony Parker in the WCF that year?
The logic on Harris and Nelson makes no sense.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

As a Bobcat fan, it WOULD NOT have made more sense to go with Al Jefferson. Were you high when you wrote this? Emeka just pwnd college, won a title and everyone thought he would be the #1 pick. The Bobcats thought they had a ‘steal’ getting him at #2. If Emeka played anywhere other than the Bobcats, he would have been a all-star last season. One of the best shot blockers in the NBA, great defender, and doesnt get enough touches to average 20 points a game, but he could if he did.

  • http://www.hoopsmanifesto.blogspot.com Jeff Fox

Enough bashing me about Harris – I ADMIT I THINK I SCREWED THAT ONE UP. That said, I totally believe in the winner concept. It is much harder to put up good personal stats on a winner than it is a losing team. But, like I said, Harris and Nelson should probably be switched in the list.

  • http://www.hoopsmanifesto.blogspot.com Jeff Fox

BETCATS, Okafor was a player with limited upside and a bad back coming out of college. However, I still like him as a player. In HINDSIGHT I think Jefferson is a better player. At the time of the draft I thought the Raptors were stupid to pass on Jefferson and take Araujo. Guess I was right that time (see – I don’t always screw up).

  • http://www.boogiewilliams.com Boing Dynasty aka Free Lester Hudson

Wow, Josh Childress had one corny ‘fro.

  • Chris

@Boing, what do you mean “had”. He still has that thing.

  • http://www.nba.com Pardeep

When yall do the 1996 draft again ALLEN IVERSON IS NO.2 NO MATTER WHAT DONT EVEN THINK OF PUTTING NASH BEHIND KOBE. IVERSONS CAREER IS WAY BETTER THAN NASH’S and I dont want to see anything wrong. please Slam dont mess it up. Good picks for the 2004 draft!.

  • http://www.hoopsmanifesto.blogspot.com Jeff Fox

Warning you in advance Pardeep – you probably won’t want to read the 1996 one!!

  • http://www.sonicbids.com/shaemorin doyouwantmore

Wow. Jameer Nelson looks like one of these brought his kid along or something. (That’s no dig against Jameer)

  • http://www.nba.com Pardeep

    @Jeff: Are you a A.I. hater too?

  • a_whiteman

2003 was so weak it made 1984s draft look good

  • http://www.hoopsmanifesto.blogspot.com Jeff Fox

Pardeep, I used to like AI, when he was in college, but I came to realize what he was in the pros – an undersized shooting guard who shoots too much. He’s gritty and has a big heart and his fun to watch though, I’ll give him that.

  • D12FSU

i think 2nd place for biggest bust would be Bassy…i know he had a lot of hype, and that prolly got to his head…but portland past on so many better players: Big Al, Nelson, Josh and JR smith, and K-Mart (wow, what a steal at 26)

  • http://www.mynameinblue.blogspot.com Hisham

How about Jameer’s ominously colored tie?!

  • http://www.mynameinblue.blogspot.com Hisham

And I agree with Pardeep if Nash is no. 2 in the 96 draft remix i’m going to cry.

    1 Kobe
    2 A.I.
    3 Ray Allen
    4 Nash
    5 Marbury

I would like to add that had that draft been remixed in ’01 (after 5 years in the L) AI would still be no. 1 and Nash wouldn’t be top 5, maybe top 10.
