Report: Odom Deal Imminent

It looks like the Lakers and Lamar are close to an agreement: “Lamar Odom is believed to be seeking at least a $10 million contract from the Lakers…The deal the Lakers were reportedly offering was for around $7 million. But the sides might not be as far apart as that. Ronnie Lester, assistant GM, told me Saturday that he heard the Lakers offer now a ‘little north of $8 million’ and he expected a deal to get done early next week.”

If they can get Odom under $9M for 4 or 5 years, it’s great for the Lakers. Honestly though? I want the best for Lamar. Get that $.

  • Z Posted: Jul.13 at 9:42 am
he’ll sign. as broussard said, odom has no leverage. there hasn’t been an offer for him so the lakers can wait him out and get him even at 7 or 8. same thing with david lee, nobody is reaching for him.

  • Brad Long Posted: Jul.13 at 10:13 am
    Great news.

  • Eboy Posted: Jul.13 at 10:18 am
Glad to see Lamar is about to get his money. I still think he could be a rock solid trade chip at some point too if the Ron Ron experiment doesn’t pan out, but that’s a long ways off.

I don’t care what you say about Ron Artest but when you add him to a championship roster that hasn’t lost a single decent player from last year (If they do re-sign Lamar) then the Lakers are just sick man. Just sick. Love them or hate them, they are just sick.

  • Eboy Posted: Jul.13 at 10:21 am
sixersforlife, I think Ariza was a decent player, but you just may have forgotten him for a second.

  • Sesa Posted: Jul.13 at 10:25 am
Ariza might just work in Houston if Yao was healthy

  • James the balla Posted: Jul.13 at 10:25 am
Yes Eboy we know lol. Trevor was THE guy for the lakers and will not win 50 games with out him. You keep reminding us. His 8 ppg and 4 rpg will be missed.

  • Prison Mike Posted: Jul.13 at 10:26 am
We’ll see how good Ariza is this season, then judge.

  • Gerard Himself Posted: Jul.13 at 10:28 am
So Ariza leaves, but Artest is coming in, Odom probably stays, Doc Brown stays with the team, sounds all pretty good to me. They could maybe another swingman though, to back up Kobe

  • Eboy Posted: Jul.13 at 10:35 am
James, I really wasn’t trying to be a pr*ck. I’m just saying, you act like an ideal system player in the triangle (and someone who made at least 5 or 6 huge plays in the playoffs at really tense moments) can be easily replaced by a player who is neither a) role player or b) a guy who’s had huge playoff moments in his limited playoff career. Just saying. Trevor’s got a ring….where’s Ron’s?

  • HangTime Hec Posted: Jul.13 at 10:48 am
I don’t get this league sometimes. Lamar Odom gets 10million for 5 years while Varjejo and his hair get about 45 million?

  • James the balla Posted: Jul.13 at 10:54 am
So Lebron doesn’t produce either because he doesn’t have a ring. 8 and 4 or 17 and 5 … I will miss Ariza but how many times have we seen players play great this year, or in a playoff setting, only to come back and suck the next year. And then the next year once they get the money go down the hole with teddy the bears life. I mean… Ariza was huge but still. he doesn’t deserve the world on a silver platter. he is good ball player. i wish him luck because I liked the kid. I would be more worried about Wade signing the extension than anything else.

  • a_whiteman Posted: Jul.13 at 11:37 am
why is everyone so down about ariza leaving??? Ariza’s ceiling as a player IS RON ARTEST, so why wait another 3-4 years for that to happen when you can just go and get artest??? Ron may not have a ring but you cant deny his game and he is a great playoff performer to, from indy to sac-town to houston.

  • riggs Posted: Jul.13 at 11:45 am
ariza’s the reason why yall even got that ring tbh.

  • dhowardmagic Posted: Jul.13 at 12:03 pm
As far as skill level goes between Ariza and Artest, Ron-Ron has the definite edge right now. But, will Ron accept the 3rd (maybe 4th depending on how Bynum turns out) option on offense? Absolutely not. Also, two of the three biggest egos in the league will inevitably clash. Not a good deal for the chemistry of the Lakers.

  • RV Posted: Jul.13 at 12:10 pm
Ariza’s ceiling as a player is ron artest? I’m not even sure what that means…they definitely aren’t the same type of player and never will be. It would be very difficult to gauge his ciling as of right now…..and artest isn’t even “artest” anymore, LA isn’t getting him at his prime physically, not sure he’s ever been in his prime mentally..maybe for the first month of last season…. and he was not a great playoff performer for Houston.

  • James the balla Posted: Jul.13 at 12:22 pm
Yes riggs we know. lol We have heard your point over and over again. And Kobe sucks. Thanks for coming. Big news though… A.I. to the heat… that would be hilarious for Eboy. And if he goes to Charlotta I get to laugh at BET!!

  • a_whiteman Posted: Jul.13 at 12:27 pm
phil jackson can control ron artest, ron is NOWHERE near the headcase that dennis rodman was. And, last time i checked the bulls won 3 straight with jordan and rodman. The only way they repeat though is if odom comesback, they need a proven player off the bench and without odom they dont have that.

  • sixersforlife_85 Posted: Jul.13 at 12:42 pm
You’re right, I forgot about Ariza.

  • Anony Mous Posted: Jul.13 at 1:08 pm
So with the pay cut does that mean Lamar will have to cut down on the sweets?

  • Josh D Posted: Jul.13 at 1:38 pm
    Damn it!

  • showmeyourwits Posted: Jul.13 at 1:59 pm
When has there ever been an issue with Artest’s “ego” ruining a team’s chemistry or game plan? Recent history certainly suggests otherwise…

  • breeze Posted: Jul.13 at 3:31 pm
@ show me i honestly think he help the pacers tremendously and they havent been teh same since…and sacremento didnt give him a team…houston he was impressive in the playoffs…further than t-mac

  • RV Posted: Jul.13 at 5:10 pm
whiteman….rodman was more of a headcase outside the court or when the ball was dead, ron is more of a headcase during game play….Rodman stuck to his job, Ron not so much.

  • ciolkstar Posted: Jul.14 at 4:52 am
Rodman was atleast as bad as Ron is on the court. Kicking camera men, headbutting refs, remember that? Outside of the debacle in Detroit, Ron really doesn’t have much history with causing trouble, and is by most accounts a great teammate. I don’t think Ron will be a problem in LA as long as Kobe doesn’t continually disrespect him the way he does with almost every other Laker teammate. Though there is the question of how well Ron will fit in the Triangle, will he shoot the wide open spot-up three as well as Ariza did? Or be happy with 10-12 shots a game? I guess we’ll see…

[...] things seemed sunny. Today, not so much: “Lakers owner Jerry Buss, who improved on his offer of $8 million a season [...]

Have to agree with Eboy, The Lakers are not a defensive TEAM. Ariza was the “swiss army knife”.
Name 1 laker benchplayer that moved past “potential” into starting material.
    Walton? Paid.
    Vujacic? Paid.
Farmar almost lost his spot to Shanon Brown.
Would you start any of (these guys?) Ariza was bigger than his stat’s just ask Shane Battier… kinda ironic. His 8 points were icing on the cake with L.O. coming off the bench. Dont get it twisted, Artest as strong as he (can) be will be a challenge and an experiment. Ariza as Eboy already correctly pointed out came up BIG in tense playoff/ finals moments. Thats not potential or experimental thats proven roleplay and championship team chemistry. How quick some are to take this banner that Kobe didnt win by himself for granted.

Remember that, when the reloaded lakers win again.
