Marion Lands in Dallas

Cuban & Co. hire the Matrix.

by Marcel Mutoni

As it had been previously rumored, The Matrix is now reportedly a Dallas Maverick.

Mark Cuban’s computer screen apparently told him this was a good idea, and he pulled the trigger on a rather complicated deal to acquire Marion. Involved in the transaction are the Mavs, Raptors, and either the Grizzlies or Thunder.

The Star-Telegram explains:

An NBA source said Wednesday that the deal for the 6-foot-7 forward will happen and that a trade call with the NBA office had been set up for today. Barring unforeseen circumstances, the deal will go through today. Details weren’t completely known. But it’s a sure thing that Jerry Stackhouse is the principle piece moving from the Mavericks to Toronto. But it is likely he will move on from there.

It matters not for Stackhouse, because he will be an unrestricted free agent when he is bought out by the team that eventually ends up with him. That team, which is believed to be Memphis or Oklahoma City, will absorb a $2 million salary, the guaranteed portion of his 2009-2010 contract. Other players could be involved in the deal, although none of the Mavericks’ key personnel will be involved.

As the linked article points out, the Mavs could potentially roll out a starting lineup that looks like this next season: Gortat, Nowitzki, Marion, Howard and Kidd, plus Terry reprising his sixth man role.

That, of course, isn’t enough to win a title, but it’s certainly nothing to sneeze at either.

i heard he got traded for shaq!!!

  • BK all Day

First! and as a Mavs fan I love this. Stackhouse was a bum and hopefully the Marion and Kidd combo can be similar to the Marion-Nash combo.

    You know… that… that’s not a TERRIBLE starting lineup.

  • http://www.hoopsmanifesto.blogspot.com Jeff Fox

Dallas fans better hope Marion still has some springs left in his legs.

  • nicko

your moms a terrible starting lineup

  • http://adfji.com Jukai

Yeah, she needs to work on her jump shot and get more quickness in her first step. She’s got great basketball IQ though!

  • http://www.mynameinblue.blogspot.com Hisham

Gortat should not be a starting center in the NBA

  • http://www.mynameinblue.blogspot.com Hisham

nicko is the new idiot on the block

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

Marion will cry his way out of dallas to.

  • http://www.dontclick.blogspot.com/ Freshly

    Still no contender.

  • http://www.fanballers.com so fresh n so clean

Don’t know if you heard, but this is a complex four team trade involving a sign and trade with Turkoglu and the Magic…

DAL gets Marion, Greg Buckner (from Mem), Humphries (from TO)

MEM gets Stack (from Dal), Quincy Douby (from TOR) and Cash

TO gets Turkoglu (sign and trade from ORL), Antoine Wright and Devean George (both from Dallas)

This is a GREAT trade for Toronto. Given that Turkoglu came via a sign and trade, the Raps now have the ability to use their Mid-Level Exception on some other keys pieces (Delfino and Rasho, just guessing…)

Dallas gets their man in Marion and now with Kidd, Terry, Howard, Marion and Dirk, they have a lineup that can run and gun when needed. The Mavs have had an amazing offseason.

The advantage for Orlando is that they get a 8 million dollar trade kicker, which will be very useful for them in the future.

    BIG Move by Colangelo.

The Matrix got offered two pills – the red offers less money but a championship contender while the blue is rotting away into obscurity but with money.
He will never find out how deep the rabbit hole goes.

  • MattM

Teams seem to be stockpiling older players. Is this a reaction to teams like the Thunder, Blazers, and G State?

  • Flash

the revenge of the matrix! watch out everybody, here we go again run n gun style!

  • Flash

shawn would probably f**kin shut all o ya’ll doubters saying he aint got no game left in him! and im glad!

  • nicko

good one hisham…now go take care of your kids

  • http://slamonline.com/ niQ

I hope the deal so fresh n so clean said was true. Cause that’d be a great for the Raps. Antoine Wright is steadily improving and could be great coming off the bench (assuming he will come off the bench)

All I got from the newspaper is that it was a 4 team trade. They never mentioned which 4 teams or which players were involved (because they still needed approval from the League). But I’m glad everything is fixed. Just waiting for the season to start now!

  • http://adfji.com Jukai

Nicko: should he trade his kids for Shaq?

  • nicko

hahaha that would be a wise decision

  • underdog

I hope the Matrix picks up his game in the Western Conference where he left off. The Mavs team looks good, but I think JKidd was a little bit too expensive.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

oh wow, Dallas got Gortat too? That is an improvement over the corpse formerly known as “Eric is Damp”. Yep, Juks is right. That starting 5 can compete. Titles? Nope. Not with the Spurs GM doing a damn good job over there in San Antonio. But Dallas is now in a much better Situation than Nawlins, Houston, or even Utah (if they let Milsap leave, those dum dums). I am cautiously optimistic. Barrea must work on his game (D, decision making…) so he can spell Jason Kidd, because i shudder at the thought of Ason playing big minutes. Especially with that broke-ass set shot he’s got.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

umm, to those who claim Stack is a bum? Shame on you. Watch Stackhouse from ’00-07. Player president right thurr. And whats this running gag on slamonline with “trade xyz for Shaq”? Don’t get it

  • jk_light

    Hi Darksaber,
I read somewhere that Jason Kidd’s setshots from 3 where really high percentage, but don’t know where it was.
I think with this team they are competing hard for the 3rd spot in the West. Can they beat a healthy Lakers or Spurs team? I don’t think so. But what trade or signing could they have done to look better than the real contenders?

  • nicko

    trade Darksaber for shaq!!!

  • http://slamonline.com/ niQ

Jason Kidd’s percentages were very nice during the playoffs this season. But anyone who’s ever owned Kidd in a fantasy league would scoff at the idea of high percentages from Kidd.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

    nicko is fun…ny. (kinda).

  • http://www.mynameinblue.blogspot.com Hisham

nicko has no trade value! i wouldn’t trade nicko for a post-it

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

i know about the percentages. All media outlets were raving about his much improved long range shooting” last season. Know what? % is just one part of it. The way Ason bricked open 3 after open 3 in the Denver Series shows me all i need to see. Gotta make those when your # 2 and 3 options are struggling all playoffs long. Kidd was fantastic for a decade or more, no question now he’s a liability.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

    ok, Hish wins that round.

  • http://www.anwilson.blogspot.com/ rainman10

I think Gortat should be given a chance to start. Now I dont mean 40 minutes a night, even starting in Dallas he will get maybe 25 minutes. They will often go with lineup of Dirk, Marion, Howard, Terry and Kidd which isn’t bad. Check Gortat stats per 48 minutes, and his efficiency rating. A good rebounder and shot blocker, which is all they need him for.

  • nicko

    yo momma

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

Great analysis, rainman. Just hope Josh Howard can come back healthy. The way he played through injury all through the playoffs was inspiring. But a healthy Josh makes the Mavs very tough to stop.

  • http://nbacheapseats.blogspot.com Chendaddy

They’ve got the talent. They need the chemistry. Maybe they can all go camping in Australia with Dirk or smoke a fat one with Josh Howard.

  • http://bleacherreport.com/users/42594-Hoops4life- Overtime

How much would you like this lineup on your team about 3 years ago?

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

i dont know whos more excited about trix teaming with kidd, me or kidd. kidd to kenyon was one of the best oop combos ever.

  • Dallas J

people who hate on this deal…u scared! So eager to bury the Mavs..not so fast. Matrix Reloaded!

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

I feel sorry for Rick Carlisle.

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

    Meh.

  • larrylegend

what you should you do with kidd, what should he do? 1. coming of the bench is no option, it’s a waste. 2. retirement…no way, this guy is born for basketball. 3. trade him for another very good point guard is very unlikely (NY has none). it’s good as it is, dallas is a nice place for players, he will play playoff games and the mavs have the greatest teacher of the game nowadays.

  • larrylegend

Rick Carlisle still coaches the mavs…damn…i forgot.

  • larrylegend

  • wayno

    good for you

Shawn Marion = false hope. Don’t be fooled, Mavs fans. I don’t like to prematurely “playa hate”, but let’s see him prove me wrong. He’s already set an impressive precedent for making the worst out of any situation. 1.) Whined his way out of Phoenix, despite taking the most shots on a team where he really wasn’t that stacked team’s best offensive player. 2.) Clearly wasn’t happy in Miami, despite Pippenesque hopes and clearly being the team’s second-best offensive option by a wide margin. 3.) Ditto with Toronto. Think he can happily share the ball with Dirk, Howard, JT and Kidd? Hopefully – but objectively looking at his history, you’d have to seriously doubt it.

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

Shawn Marion messed up the chemistry in the locker room of my fantasy team this year.

  • Kadavour

    Good point Joel O.

  • andre anglais

Gortat played the pick and roll beautifully for Orlando in the playoffs. He played well and within his limitations, and deserves his payday. Good pickup for a team with a smart PG.

    Trade details here:
    http://www.thestar.com/sports/article/663295
So Fresh/Clean had it mostly right:
DAL gets Hump, Nathan Juwai, and Matrix
    TOR gets George and Wright
DAL also picks up Greg Buckner (whoa) from MEM
MEM gets the stack, a 2016 2nd round pick from TOR, and cash for stack’s buyout (2 mil, I guess).
Orlando gets a trade exemption for future deals (Turkoglu is somehow wrapped up in this thing, too) and Tdot manages to save enough cap space for maybe one other.

Crazy, convoluted deal, makes me wish I was Brian Collangelo’s accountant.

  • http://slamonline.com/ niQ

I think the Raptors just added Nathan Jawai to the deal.

  • http://slamonline.com/ niQ

Btw, Marion should’ve stayed in Phoenix. It still boggles my mind how he left team that was a match made in heaven for him.
