Rasheed’s Coming to Boston

Do these old cars have enough left in the tank?

by Ryne Nelson

There’s a helluva lot Rasheed Wallace and Kevin Garnett have in common. They went No. 4 and No. 5, respectively, in the ’95 NBA Draft. Their intensity can drive them out of this planet when they’re on the court. They equally dangerous with their back to the basket as they are squaring from 17 feet.

They already have one championship ring. And they want some more. The Boston Globe reports that, for the first time in their careers, Rasheed and KG will be working for the same franchise:

An NBA source said tonight that Detroit free agent forward Rasheed Wallace has committed to sign with the Celtics on July 8 when free agents are able to sign. Wallace is expected to get a two-year deal using the mid-level exception (expected to be about $5.6 million to $5.8 million).

As if dealing with KG’s on-court antics wasn’t enough, the Celtics have their hands full with easily the L’s move effusive tandem. Maybe the Cs should redouble their efforts to sign the ever-levelheaded Grant Hill, who may have met with Doc Rivers today. No word yet on how this affects the Celtics’ stance toward Big Baby.

Forget the fact that the Boston will have an average age of 45.67, the Green is still capable of bringing out the cars for at least one more inspired title run next season.

i cannot wait for the season to start…so many stacked squads (oh and so many horrible ones)

  • ab_40

now sign leon powe to a one year offer cuz he can’t get nothing else with his injury. maybe they can sign and trade him for marquis daniels.

  • http://mynameinblue.blogspot.com Hisham

Rondo is too young. They need to dump him and go get Kidd haha. No one drafted in this millenium should make their starting line-up.

What a brittle, old group the C’s will be. First sign of trouble RaTeed and Paula Pierce will quit – and that first sign will be another “if only” injury. They’re still not making it past the second round in the Leastern Conference.

    wow… boston is sooo stacked

Wait… so who the eff comes off the bench? Sheed or Perkins? Seriously.

  • MagicChicken

Hey here’s a thought … weren’t the nuggs suppose to enter into the league’s elite (despite getting bent over a knee by the Lakers)? I wonder, are they next to make a big move to secure their spot? If so, what could they possibly do? Who do they sign?

  • michaeldott

Hey Ryne shouldn’t it read “They are equally dangerous”

  • http://ballislife.com Moose

@ Anton: Powe is an FA and he is gone. Go ahead. I love Leon, but there’s nothing I can do.

  • Tower

Kevin Wilson@ I see what your saying, but you must not count out Denver Man! they are for real too, even contenders.

  • MalanaCream

RR, ray alen, paul, Sheed and KG, omfg… i wanna see whos going to shoot the ball lol

  • Babygab

This is sick man ! Now this season really needs to start !

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Have people seen Sheed play recently though? The paint is his kryptonite.

  • TDP

After their in-game bromance during the 2008 ECF, it’s very likely Rasheed is moving to Boston so that he can legally marry Kevin Garnett.

This team will either explode to 60+ wins or implode to an early playoff exit. Same for Artest with the Lakers and Shaq with the Cavs. Talk about playing with chemistry doused with oil and lit on fire.

  • http://dsfkl.com Jukai

Damn, I mean… between Garnett and Sheed, there wont be air to breath in the TD Banknorth Garden. There will be so much cursing, it’ll overpower everything else.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

People talk about all these teams that are going to win 60… the only thing is that the Cavs, Celts and Lakers were ALREADY 60-win teams and Orlando was at 59. All three teams tweaked their rosters to varying degrees of success. Orlando got worse. LA and Boston got a bit better but lost some key playoffs performer (Big Baby and RZA). Cleveland got better ON PAPER because they didn’t give up anything but we’ll have to wait and see how they’re going to integrate Shaq into their O. Oops, my bad, they have no offensive schemes, nevermind.

After two seasons of being basically invisible, I’d bet big money Sheed shows out with ’04-like ability playing with a talented team of vets again.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

@melvin ely: From what I recall, he has taken younger players under his wing his entire career. This includes JO, the entire Detroit bench mob.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

@melvin ely: Also, KG drove Glen Davis to tears. Right. Tee-hee. What a Big Baby. Nyuk nyuk. Laugh all you want, but if you’re a Celtic fan this is what you want from your players. Passion. Big Baby didn’t fight back too, he sat there and was upset with himself and he knew he had screwed up. But look how that helped the Celtics down the stretch? Beyond that obvious game winner, Big Baby really stepped up during this year’s playoffs. So how was that a bad thing?

Ferry and Brown are really dropping the ball here. They’re letting their rivals pick up some good, good players, whilst they bask in the glow of trading for Shaq.

  • vangelis sandris aka boy sanchez

    hope it works!!

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

This is gonna be fun to watch. I smell a new record of technicals for a team next season.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Blinguo

Avg age 45.67 ?! Doc Rivers is an over 50 (if he was uh playing) I would think, but the rest of them? 35.67 sounds more accurate at that if it was a typo. But KG/Pierce/Allen are in the 33 camp? Rondo & Perkins not over 30. Ryne musta Odenized his median/law of avgs/beancounting Bean town stat there, sorry Oden(stats).

  • L

i wish he went to the spurs instead..L

  • sw

I’m pretty sure that was a joke there bilinguo. Guess it was lost in translation.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

These old cars have mid grade in there tank so they will come up short like the diesel!!!

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com DP

Rasheed might actually want to play like he has seen a basketball now. play wit it.

  • http://www.anwilson.blogspot.com rainman10

I see Big Baby leaving. The green will sign an athlete for the perimeter, and before camp they will sign Powe and he will slowly work his way back and be able to give that fresh energy off the bench by seasons end.

  • RunningBrave

I hope Sheed comes off the bench along with Big Baby. Perk is too dominant to have his role reduced to 6th man. Hasn’t Perk earned his stripes already? PLEESEE keep Big Baby and Rondo. As for Powe I hope he comes back healthy but if he don’t Boston needs some young legs to replace him too. Yes, it’s obvious the C’s are old but no doubt still talented. I just hope those bodies can hold out till the playoffs otherwise that’s it and all we C’s fans will have left is those memories, oh precious memories, from 08.

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

The Celtics new nickname should be the Golden Girls.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Blinguo

Other people usually don’t understand me(or spell my name right, extra i, maybe I should just straight “Bling Woah” it from now on) and I didn’t understand this time. Ryne doesn’t joke around when it comes to correct info. But yeah I guess he just hit 4 #’s on his Keyboard in a row, 4567.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Blinguo

And in Ryne car news, Jerry sloan is like the prototype Model T Ford with the wooden horse on the front, because people hadn’t seen cars moving without horses before. And Deron Williams drives a 300k mile Chevy truck out there with that broken down team. He needs to hit the Auto Zone and replace those used up expensive parts.

  • http://www.realcavsfans.com Anton

@ Z: I take exception to that. We know have double the elaborate offensive plays than we did before:
    1.) Give it to LeBron
    2.) Give it to Shaq
This is the death of LeIso
Bron’s not open? Give it to Shaq, yo

Are the Celtics reviving the Schick Legends Classic Game??

  • http://www2.gsb.columbia.edu/faculty/jstiglitz/ NICK KALATHES

nice move,3 years ago we would have to shut down the league if a team had the Celtics’ starting five…time rules everything…

  • http://www2.gsb.columbia.edu/faculty/jstiglitz/ NICK KALATHES

by the way, the really big news of the day: ROGER FEDERER gentlemen,ROGER FEDERER….

  • werty

how do they expect that lineup to work???!

  • http://www2.gsb.columbia.edu/faculty/jstiglitz/ NICK KALATHES

@werty,jukai,etc…:you really think that the propabilities are against Sheed,K.G,Pierce and Ray to work together…??? i’am telling you that 2 years ago this line-up would have forced Mr Stern to intervine….

  • http://www2.gsb.columbia.edu/faculty/jstiglitz/ NICK KALATHES

Lakers over Celtics next year with Lebron confused about his future next summer…(to go exactly WHERE…?at the lottery Knicks,Jersey ? at Miami where he would have to share the spotlight with Wade..?stay at Cleveland with the great Mo Willians? or maybe …..better go to L.A and play with Griffin Gordon,Baron and Camby…)

  • http://fsjkalf.com Jukai

Nick: Two years ago this squad would have been considered ‘old’ but now it’s downright ancient. If they all stay healthy and gel well, they can go toe to toe with the Lakers.
But Ray has to find his lost consistant shot, KG has to find his knees, Sheed has to find this ‘basketball IQ’ that everyone talks about him having in Portland and some of Detroit, and Pierce has to be able to recover from every fake injury he has.
Plus, let’s see who resigns, ya dig?

  • JoeMaMa

I still like the Spurs over these guys.

  • http://www2.gsb.columbia.edu/faculty/jstiglitz/ NICK KALATHES

@JoeMaMa…:i wish i could say the same….(i like them over everybody in the east but not over the Lakers…)

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Are we even sure that KG is coming back at 100%? Ray Allen looks like he’s 45 every other game. Is it possible that Sheed’s poor play of late is a result of diminishing abilities instead of just not caring? I think it’s funny that Sheed always gets a pass for not showing up and choking in the clutch. He’s not and has never been an elite PF. The rep is there, the production never was. He won’t give them anything that the Powe-Davis combo wasn’t providing. Overrated as eff. Unless you like your big to jack up 3s all game long and never sniff the block.
