Things Break Down Between Odom and Lakers

Team owner Jerry Buss has apparently had it with the negotiations: “Lakers owner Jerry Buss, an avid poker player, called Lamar Odom’s bluff at the negotiating table Tuesday, following through with his threat to pull the offer to Odom. The Lakers admitted that the offer Buss presented to Odom and his representatives has been available for over a week, but that because the unrestricted free agent never responded, Buss grew upset and broke off all negotiations.”

    Oh Oh!

  • http://www.another48minutes.blogspot.com Gerard Himself

Apparently, 9 million per season for 3 years isn’t enough.

  • http://www.bbaxn.com Darksaber

Quick someone call Latrell. Ask him if he’d mind Lamar using his infamous statement that ended his Nba career.

  • http://www.mynameinblue.blogspot.com Hisham

Odom does deserve big money more than some of these guys that have been getting large contracts this summer. He’s watching semi-good players get offered more than he is, and thatwould piss me off too. Just resign him already, LA. Reward him for being a big part of your championship

No Lamar, no repeat. If they want to have a chance next season they better get this done.

  • chintao

Easy, Mr. Buss. Lamar was just finishing off the last of a Giant Gobstopper.

  • Bruno

Lamar is better than Artest and more necessary in this team too

  • Krishan

Buss might be an avid poker player, but I’ve seen him play texas hold’em some years back. Needless to say, he f*ckin sucks at it.

  • Krishan

They talked to the heat and mavs, who could only offer the Mid level ex., and they won’t respond to buss’s 36m for 4 or 30m for 3? Another case of an agent f*cking up a player’s carrer.

This just reeks of stupidity really. What’s not to like about 10m per for three years? What, that 5 mil exception looking too sweet for you to pass up, you moron of an agent? God. Lamar, ditch the dumb SOB in the interstate and get your well-deserved paper.

  • a_whiteman

Its not the money that’s the deciding factor, he wants a 5yr deal for security. And no odom no repeat!!!

  • Krishan

Oh sure! An extra year! And all you had to give up was 3-4mill per year, being surrounded by tremendous talent and staff, and the unenviable probability of repeating the motherf*ckin championship!

  • http://adfji.com Jukai

5 million for 5 years = 25, 8 million for 3 years = 24. So, you know, think about it.

  • James

this fool better give lamar the deal he wants. im not ready to see my Lakers not repeat.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

he wants 50 for 5 from the lakers. and he does have a case. that’s varejao, bg and hedo type money. he’s in that category. it’s prrolly his last big contract. why should he be the one taking the hit? why wouldn’t it be buss taking the hit to field a potential dynasty?

  • http://adfji.com Jukai

It’s security + role on his team. I’m not saying I’d go Lamar’s route (let’s see, championship, quick money for better deal faster…) but Lamar a) wants injury protection by getting a longer mid-level exception and b) doesn’t want to be the 4th-5th wheel on his team. Yes, think about it: Kobe’s the head dog, Gasol is the second banana, ARTEST will not be anything less than a third wheel (and may try to take that second banana spot) and if Bynum transforms, Lamar will be a legit 6th man on the team.
    That’s NEVER been Bynum.
Going to Dallas guarentees he’s the second banana (unless Marion stabs him in the shower), and even more for Miami.
    It’s ego over money.

  • Krishan

Check the article. First, it says that Buss was willing to give him 30 mill for three years, and it’s either miami or dallas chipping in with 34mill for 5 years. And more importantly, it said that Lamar WANTED to sign back, although his agent didn’t. If the article is legit, then I feel sorry for odom. That agent was bluffing, hoping for more money, but all they got was rope, and now it’s all tied up into a noose. Either way, this sucks.

  • Krishan

And Odom playing second banana is disastrous. See LA before gasol. If last season taught us anything, being a sixth man suits him to a tee: he gets to dominate the opposing squad’s bench, which is good for his fragile confidence, and it kinda limits the effects of his occasional disappearing acts.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

wow, that “Marion stabs him in the shower” line just killed me. Fun…ny! (and so possible too..)

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

Please Mark Cubes, you lost Bass AND couldn’t sign Gortat. You are looking at the following guys playing minutes at the four when Marion is sitting: Hollins, Singleton and in a rare twin towers configuration, Dampier alongside Dirk. I shudder just thinking of that horrible lineup. Please get a bonafide PF who can make things happen in the post and rebound.

  • http://adfji.com Jukai

Krishan: not saying Odom playing second banana WONT be disasterous.. just saying it’s possible that Odom doesn’t want to be the 4th/5th option.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Take the money Odom, before you pull an Ariza, then realize a season later, I MESSED UP!!!

  • http://double-technical.blogspot.com Zee!

F that, take the 27 mill you were going to give Lamar, Kuptchak and get Marvin Williams and Raymond Felton.

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

If we can’t get this worked out, I like Zee’s idea. Tim Thomas is an option at this spot too.

  • MagicChicken

for all those who question Buss’s “avid poker player” status, or heck, even his competence in these negotiations, just remember this: Jerry Buss is also an avid drinker.

  • vmcb

Why Portland offered a contract to Milsap and not Odom confounds me.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

brad, tim thomas really? like reaaally?

  • KazLaker

Once Lamar finally signs a contract he should then start shopping around for a new agent imo.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

@ Z: Tim Thomas likes to slack, but his talent and skill level are there. When he was in Phoenix, he practically saved the Suns from the Lakers that one playoff series. Again, he’s a type of dude who can go for 20 points in 20 minutes, to 5 points in 38 minutes. Depends on how he’s feeling… Most of the time he feels like pulling the latter.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Buss and Odom are both being irrational. Is this a relationship you really want to have between members of a potential dynasty?

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

It must cost ALOT more than I realise to keep the gummi bears and hershey’s kisses coming through…

They probably thought they weren’t going to have a chance, What were Portland going to do with Lamar??
Lamar’s home is LAKESHOW and going anywhere else will not provide him with what he is/was after…

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

…which we all now know to be,getting enough money to support is engulfing sugar habit.

  • Kelly Tucker

Lakers should sign Lamar Odom, and Odom should sign with the Lakers; but it all depends on what Lamar wants. Do he want the best chance at a repeat championship or do he want security (at less $) for 5 years. If he take care of his money for the next 3 years, he should be set for life financially anyway. But he could have at least returned the Lakers calls, and not just left them hanging. Either you’re going to sign or you’re not. Stop wasting people time, and your time.

  • D$

Buss is wuss. He screwed over Shaq way back when, he screwed over Ariza this summer, now he wants to screw over Lamar.

Lamar wants a real five year deal so that he can retire a Laker. He doesn’t want to be discarded like Bruce Bowen was by the Spurs this summer. A real deal will avoid that. Of course the Lakers don’t want a real deal, which kind of shows what their real intentions are.

Go ahead Buss, screw over Odom and let’s see the Lakers win another championship – in 2020!

    Spurs or Heat
