Trade: Marco Belinelli for Devean George

by Marcel Mutoni

The wheeling and dealing of this wild offseason is evidently far from over, as evidenced by the Warriors basically giving away Marco Belinelli to the Raptors (does Devean George even still count as an NBA player?)

Although Raptors GM Bryan Colangelo is said to be in love with Belinelli’s game, like many moves in the NBA these days, this was yet another financially-driven one. The Warriors are going to save themselves a bit of loot, as explained by FanHouse:

The Warriors traded shooting guard Marco Belinelli to the Toronto Raptors for small forward Devean George and cash considerations. The deal will be announced on Thursday, according to a source.

The cash considerations are that the Raptors will pick up most of George’s contract, worth $1.6 million in 2009-10. To that extent, George will be helpful to the Warriors even if he never plays a game for them. It certainly goes further in explaining why the Warriors would give up on Belinelli, just 23.

The 31-year old George (and his coveted expiring contract) averaged a shade over 3 points per game last season, while Marco dropped in just under 9 points a night.

Belinelli, a young and talented shooter, becomes the fourth European player on Toronto’s roster. He’s set to earn about $1.5 mil next season, with a team option the following year.

How many Americans are left on that roster?

  • http://djsklfl.com Jukai

Belinelli might actually be a legit starter on a team that isn’t the black hole known as the Warriors.

  • nicko

devean george is only 31???? i thought he was the one that havliceck stole the ball from….

  • riggs

remember when the kings had peja hedo and vlade? they were killing it.

devean george didn’t want to veto that trade?

  • Eastcoast

RE: How many Americans are left on that roster?

Bosh, Evans, O’Bryant, DeRozan, Jack, Douby, Wright,

the others are: Hedo, Bargnani, Calderon, Rasho, Belinelli, Ukic

  • Anony Mous

If Belinelli can be a legit starter the Raps lineup looks alot better and more balanced than last year. But if not, who is their starting SG? Wright? Derozan??

  • Michael

    Eastcoast, you forgot Pops

  • http://slamonline.com/ niQ

YES RAPTORS! BC is killing it this offseason. Looking back at Belinelli’s stats last season, he dominated December, but then injuries kept him from playing after that. Here’s to hoping he’s healthy this season.

  • http://www.mynameinblue.blogspot.com Hisham

    injuries and Don Nelson.

thanks Eastcoast, although it was a rhetorical question.

  • TADOne

Don Nelson must have made this trade after drinking his 20th Bud Light yesterday.

  • rav

“How many Americans are left on that roster? ” – does that matter for a team based in canada???

and besides, this deal is an absolute steal for toronto

  • nicko

    TRADE BELINELLI FOR SHAQ!!!

  • Anony Mous

Belinelli for Shaq.. Let me put my Math hat on here… Shaq’s 20M contract.. Belinelli’s rook contract.. hmm… Naw I’m just kiddin I know (or hope) your kiddin too.

  • Gym Rat

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

  • Izzo

Looks like GSW are setting up to give Anthony Randolph that max contract. God help us all.

  • Anony Mous

^lol. I do like Randolph’s game though… finesse KG. Maybe.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com DP

Belinelli can shoot that rock. Raps are doing well but it’s all about meshing this talent together. play wit it.

    @nicko:

    hahaha good one

  • chingy

Raptors are going to give up 110+ per night with this line up; definitely makes for entertaining basketball though…

  • mike henry

Didn’t BC try to get him in the year he was drafted? he is an upgrade to an inconsistent Jason k..and more of an upside than my boy..Joey G..BC is quietly putting together a potentially very efficient squad from top to bottom. no “just practice” players. i like the lack of potential ego manics and chemistry killers….great job BC, lets hope the euro’s can be tough enough for the “MMA” style play of the east.

  • andreanglais

The all Euro starting 5ive; can we get t-shirts made?
    Calderon
    Belinelli
    Turkoglu
    Bargnani
    Nesterovic

    (after bosh leaves, of course)
    Thanks to http://thestar.blogs.com/raptors/

  • oaklandgorilla

I’m a Warriors fan and i agree with the trade. We are too stacked at tbe guard postion. We still gonna be a good team. I think Belinelli will be a great player for the Raptors

  • Anony Mous

It’s a weak lineup, but it’s cool. I would love to see that.

  • http://Nationofmillions.ca Ciolkstar

Bellinelli is legit. I really wanted the Spurs to make a push for the kid. He can play either Guard spot, he can pass and handle the ball and is a deadly shooter. I really think he has a future in the L

  • http://slamonline.com/ niQ

^The Spurs already have someone like him. His name is Roger Mason Jr.

  • http://double-technical.blogspot.com Zee!

    Wow……

  • Teddy-the-Bear

    NICE.
    Starting line-up:
    1. Calderon
    2. DeRozan
    3. Turkoglu
    4. Bosh
    5. Bargnani

  • RM

I like this trade a lot. Biggest reason being I did NOT want to see Devean George dawn a Raps jersey.

  • chingy

Raptors (last year known as the Craptors) will be a 4 or 5 seed in the east…cavs, magic, boston will be 1,2,3…hawks/raptors 4/5, heat 6…others irrelevant because will be swept in first round

  • Anony Mous

Do you really believe that Jay Triano can take a team to home court advantage in the playoffs? They gave up on Sam Mitchell way to early.. Even with the revamped roster, the talent is still similar. BTW, AP will be missed. He was the definition of consistency. I think they will make the playoffs, but they seem more like a 6-8 seed.

  • Tenorca

As a Warrior fan, I’m horrified. I can’t wait till we punt Brandon Wright for a similarly useless bum. This, of course, comes after we traded Jamal Crawford for the corpse of Speedy Claxton and the ever useless Acie Law. Ugh.

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

    FREE STEPHEN JACKSON!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • chingy

If Jay Triano’s good enough for the USA team, he’s good enough for the raps

  • http://www.boogiewilliams.com Boing Dynasty aka Free Lester Hudson

I thought Nesterovic was a Pacer? Is he back? Can they trade Wright for a new locker room carpet?

  • yaway

By the way, Lamar Odom resigns with the lakers.

  • yaway

By the way, Lamar Odom resigns with the Lakers.
    ya baby.

  • E.

Never thought L.O. would sign w/ the Heat anyway. He was just playin games.

  • http://slamonline.com/ niQ

@Boing. He recently sign with the Raptors, it was along the same time as when they got Belinelli.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

@ Anony: Talent is similar? Turkoglu over Kapono. Drafting DeRozan. Bargnani playing way better. Marco B. over no bench at all. How is this similar?

  • tizzle

    trade Anony Mous for shaq!!

  • tizzle

and nicko your first comment was gold.

  • Rusty

Also it was me who posted those two comments, not sure whats happening…

  • vmcb

Anony Mous, this year’s roster is not similiar to last year’s roster at all. Last year the Raptors had the weakest starting wing in the league with Parker and Moon. I like both players, but they’re going to be coming off the bench in Cleveland. BC has fixed this issue by picking up Hedo, Derozan, Wright, and now Belinelli. The Raptors also had a weak bench last year, whereas this year they’ll have Jack, Wright (assuming Derozan starts), Belinelli, Rasho, and Evans coming off the bench. Finally, having Roko and Will Solomon as your backup point guards didn’t help at all, which is where, again, Jack comes into play. BC has done a major overhaul of this roster and has done a good job cementing up last year’s weaknesses. The defense in the starting line-up is still pretty weak, however. I believe the Raps can make 4th or 5th seed in the East.
