A.I. May Go to Greece to Find Work

This flimsy report claims that Olympiakos may offer Iverson a two-year deal: “Lithuania-based Basketworld.lt is today reporting that Olympiacos will be extending a contract offer to Allen Iverson. Reportedly, Olympiacos officials are ready to offer free agent Iverson a two-year, $10 million deal, ‘exactly the same proposal that was presented to Nate Robinson’ earlier this year.”

  • stryfee

first and noooooo! A.I. to Europe?

  • http://djsklfl.com Jukai

YES!!!!!!!!! YES!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE LET THIS HAPPEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • ryan

This would be a sad, sad day in the WORLD of basketball. This man has done so much for this sport, and he is being treated like garbage.

  • http://www.boogiewilliams.com Boing Dynasty aka Free Lester Hudson

Do you know how much they practice in europe? Do they even have an Applebee’s in Greece?

  • http://www.mynameinblue.blogspot.com Hisham

this would suck. he’d better hire some bodyguards because Mr. Baklava’ll be out huntin’ ca’toon wabbits

  • http://theghostofroyhobbs.blogspot.com Mo Charlo

The better question is whether or not they throw people out of casinos in Greece.

  • http://www.mynameinblue.blogspot.com Hisham

and it’s not gonna happen. why do Olympanathinakiakos throw themselves in the midst of every rumour around free agents? we want Lebron, we want Kobe, we want AI, we want Nate Robinson, we want David Lee, we want Josh Childress oh no we don’t want him anymore

  • zabba

A.I. belongs in the states. He’s too gangsa to be anywhere else…except Khobar, Saudi Arabia.

  • Clockwork

    Man please

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

Wow, Antonis Fotsis-whichever Olympiakos player he’s calling himself today- would get a brain bleed if this happened.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

    Hish at 9.50…. hilarious

  • rikson

No way this little “thug” could fit in here! Too much work-ethic… But it would be interesting to see wether he has succes in europe or not?! Hes getting old, and the loss of speed and strengh is – without doubt – hurting AIs game more than anybody else! He is the Anti Duracell-Rabbit -> lots of power over a short period…

  • TADOne

It won’t happen, but it would be cool if it did.

  • http://www.boogiewilliams.com Boing Dynasty aka Free Lester Hudson

True Rikson, AI’s pretty old now, he wont be able to keep up with those athletic, speedy greeks. Umm.

  • http://www.mynameinblue.blogspot.com Hisham

^ no it absolutely wouldn’t (this from an AI fan who lives in europe)

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

It’s crazy that ppl are suddenly convinced that AI can’t get buckets anymore. Scoring was never ever the problem for AI, he was just a very bad fit in the D that was unwilling to compromise. Dude avg 25 ppg in 07/08! Look, I don’t like his game at all but let’s not preted that he wouldn’t give the BIDNESS to some euro guards that can’t defend for sh!t. We all saw how Jasekevicius was getting torched in the L and he’s basically a demi god over there. Please, show some respect.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

I went to see a game while I was in Barcelona last spring and I was very unimpressed with the level of play of one of the best teams in Europe. All the ‘stars’ were decent NBA players at best: Navarro, Andersen, Ilyasova, Vasquez, Barrett (riding the bench HARD, btw). Quincy Lewis was the main guy for the other team and I’m not even sure he cracks an NBA roster now. What I’m saying is that the Euroleague is very very overrated. It’s good as in second best league in the L but far, far away from the NBA even though some Euros in these threads would like you to believe otherwise. And Josh Childress is hot garbage in the L or in Greece.

  • http://www.mynameinblue.blogspot.com Hisham

Z, there’s very little room for 1 on 1 and isolation play in the Euroleague. That’s why AI might have trouble playing their style. Very much about team defense and motion offense. That’s why a catch and shoot guy like jasikebuevwwbcius was great there.

  • http://www.mynameinblue.blogspot.com Hisham

I do agree with you that the NBA has much better players and is a much, much better league

  • rikson

PEOPLE – scoring is no problem if you are allowed to shoot around 40% -> thats just a joke! @Boing: YEAH – because here in Europe people are only half as tall and – beware – we only have one leg…

  • rikson

Z: But you are talking about europe-players adapting to the NBA -> but in this case its the other way round Do you really think a guy, who isnt able to adapt to another team or even to a new role could adapt to another style of playing? His only chance is to rock europe with his style – and that just aint gonna happen…

  • http://djsklfl.com Jukai

Rikson: In fairness, there are teams in Europe that are sickeningly dependent on the zone. That’s why jump shooting is so popular in Europe: the zone defenders don’t even BOTHER closing out on jump shooters sometimes, it’s awful.

  • DrJ

Wow, I’m lithuanian and I try to read all basketball news from proper bball sites (Slam, etc:) but basketballworld.lt is full of sh1t. Wouldn’t trust it a bit and I don’t suggest you do.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

im going out on a limb here, but im assuming that if olympiakos wants ai to score the ball and not adapt to a new role. you don’t bring ai to be a distributor, facilitator. there is a myth that everything revolves around ball movement and taking the open shots in europe. that’s only true if you’re not the designated superstar (which doesn’t necessarily ahve something to do with talent). for instance, navarro can do no wrong in barça. i’ve seen him throw up a corner three on the break on one leg while falling out of bounds (yes, you read that right) and take countless of floaters early in the shot clock. meanwhile, barrett was riding the bench hard even though the back up pg (sata) wasn’t much of a player. santiago was also starting over vasquez even though vasquez was twice the player. if they give you the green light in europe, you can do pretty much whatever you want and if they don’t, you’ll look very very bad.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

that’s why i disregarded the stat line by jennings last year and im not surprised that he has been killing so far. they made him play off the ball for 10-15 minutes a game without any defined role in the offence. people were calling him a chucker without even giving him the chance to man the point. turns out he is a very willing passer with very good vision.

  • rikson

Cmon Z – everybody has to adapt – thats just BS and you know it! Even AI -> he still has to get to his spots and even that will be different… Plus way more zone… Stricter Rules – especially walking.. Plus the smaller 3 point area will make it very difficult for AI to use his quickness… Ther are a lot of things that will change for AI if he goes to europe, and you know that!

  • http://www.realcavsfans.com Anton

new Slam cover with AI holding feta cheese and a giant olive as a ball

  • rikson

Im guessing, that especially players who depent on penetration are going to have difficulties here…

  • http://djsklfl.com Jukai

Rikson: Bob McAdoo would like a word with you

  • rikson

Man – the NBA LOVES penetration!!! No walking calls -> the stupid handcheck rule -> the “no-offensive” foul circle -> its kind of ridiculous! I cant even remember how often I saw the King or Mamba take like 4 steps…

  • rikson

JUKAI: You know the difference between C/PF and Guards – right? Or – at least – I thought you would…

  • http://djsklfl.com Jukai

I mean, I don’t think Iverson is gonna annahilate Europe, but if you don’t think AI, if given the green light, wont be the top scorer in the Euroleagues if he heads over to Greece… damn man, I dunno what to tell you.
    This is Allen Iverson.
    This is ALLEN IVERSON.
He’s slowing down, but he’s still faster than 85% of Europe.
And I know Olympiacos loves fast breaking or scoring on those quick transition-iso plays before the zone is set up properly. This is a good fit for Iverson.

  • rikson

I mean you always try/appear to be a “big-shot” here -> kind of pathetic; especially if you dont know what youre talking about… dont you think?

  • rikson

Thats not even the topic, MAN! He just wont be able to play the same style, because of the differences between American- and European-Basketball!!! Im not saying the team wont give him green light (even if I doubt it), all Im saying is that its not possible for him to play the same way – and thats pretty obvious…

  • http://www.boogiewilliams.com Boing Dynasty aka Free Lester Hudson

Is there such a thing as a comment section “big shot”?

  • rikson

You guys really think, that a succesful european-basketball franchise, is going to sign a player in his 30ies that failed last season(s), just because he wasnt able to adapt, and give him complete green light… thats naive! Especially a guy that wasnt able to lead a NBA team somewhere noticable…ZZZZZZZ!!!

  • http://djsklfl.com Jukai

Rikson, what took you two minutes to write that out when you could have just put that in your previous post? McAdoo went over at 40 and owned the hell out of Europe, won a title, averaged 25+ points… I don’t CARE if he’s a power forward and Iverson’s a shooting guard. Both were undersized for their position and going to play against lesser competition.
I’m not sure how Iverson will gel with his team and if the team will win any games.
But Iverson will get his and no one will be able to stop him from scoring 25.

  • g

wow i feel badd for A.I

  • http://djsklfl.com Jukai

Rikson: why the hell would they sign him otherwise? If you’re going to sign a legendary player from a superior league, you’re going to negate him as a secondary option? If Iverson heads over to Olympiakos, he’s the leader. Period.

  • http://www.boogiewilliams.com Boing Dynasty aka Free Lester Hudson

do i really have to convince ppl that iverson would annihiliate the euroleague if given the green light? jr holden, terrence morris and macej lampe are doing damage over there for god’s sake! forget zones, handcheck rules, charges. give him the ball and he will give you buckets, that’s undeniable. again, i’m not even a fan of ai’s game and i wouldn’t want him on my team but scoring points is something he does very well.

  • http://www.manutd.com z

that wasn’t boing, that was me.

  • TADOne

Since I know the chances of this happening are less than 0%, this is a mute argument. But if they somehow convince AI to go overseas, i’m willing to bet any amount that AI will lead the league in scoring, and it probably wouldn’t even be close.

  • rikson

So 25+ Points on 40% shooting is “owning the league” for you? Nough said…

  • rikson

You guys do realise that basketball is business – right? From this kind of view signing an old superstar got way more benefits than his scoring… Or why do you think Olympiacos is rumored to be after so many free agents!

  • rikson

@Jukai: Tell that shit to the Pistons…

  • rikson

Maybe its because it never worked out with him as first option…

  • http://allanzuss@yahoo.com Mendel

for 5 million a year, he will nver go.

  • http://djsklfl.com Jukai

Rikson: he took his team to the NBA finals with him being a first option. What other person on Olympiakos can say that? That’s zero, incase you have trouble counting. I’d say that’s relative success.
Plus I never said he’d be shooting 40%. He’ll be shooting 50-55% against Europe competition.

  • http://www.sonicbids.com doyouwantmore

They should sign him, take note from the Cleveland playbook (give the ball to that guy!), and make AI the coach, too. I would bet on a championship. And I’m only half-kidding.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

I hope he wins a f*cking title in Greece and averages 30 and 10 or something, just to shut the idiots who jumped off the early 2000s’ AI love bandwagon and are now demonizing his every move and word up.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Iverson shot over 45 percent his last two years in Denver and averaged 25 points per game.
The idea that Iverson can only get his points if he shoots 40 percent is BS.
All three of his years in Denver he was over 45 percent. When he dropped 33 and 7 in Philly he was at .447. His second year in the league, when he averaged 22 and 6, he shot 46 percent. Iverson has had some horrendous shooting percentages, but those have mostly been for teams that played slowdown basketball or asked him to take a high volume of shots. It’s a damn shame most of y’all have never actually bothered to look at the man’s numbers.

  • LeMay

Allen Iverson fkn sucks. anyone who takes 50 shots a game can score 25 a game. I hope he goes to greece so i can stop watching him shoot fade away 3′s

    AI = DONE

  • Teddy-the-Bear

PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS AI.
Greece isn’t offering him more money. He needs to go to the Bobcats or the Sixers! Come on Iverson…
I can’t wait until he makes his move and drops 25 a game, then leads his team to the playoffs. That’ll shut the idiots like LeMay up. Oh will that be sweet.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Co-sign Allenp: Why does everyone believe in this myth that Iverson needs to shoot like 30% to score? That’s BS.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Why are you so stupid wayno?

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Teddy
People like reflexively hating other people. Makes them feel powerful.

  • http://www.nba.com Pardeep

First of all everybody has to get their stats right. Iverson average 26.4 ppg on 46 percent shooting and 7.1 apg in 07-08 for the Nuggets. The year before he averaged 25 ppg on 18 shots. Allen Iverson is still one of the best scorers in the league and he will probably prove it next year when someone signs him and he doesnt have to play DEETROIT basketball with them. Gave A.I. over 17 shots hes happy the teams winning and the fans are happy. Knicks!!!!

  • http://www.nba.com Pardeep

and no he is not going to Greece. You really think A.I. wants to play down in Greece.

  • http://djsklfl.com Jukai

Allenp: shut you ass no we don’t you suck moron

  • tavoris

Jukai, AI is faster than 100% of Europe…the only Euro players that are faster are in the NBA

  • tavoris

this really says more about the teams that are creaming themselves at the possibility of Lebron, Wade, or Bosh jumping ship (and the economy) than anything.

  • http://djsklfl.com Jukai

    Tavoris: haha, we’ll say 99.9%

  • Teddy-the-Bear

IF AI goes to New York I’m copping another Knicks jersey mos def. I haven’t had an excuse to wear my Marbury jersey since… Since I wore a jacket over the back and pretended like it was a John Starks jersey.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

    No disrespect to Steph though.

  • B.B.BALLER

A.I. WILL NOT go to Europe. He knows hes too good for Europe. Now I HATE Iverson, I just hate his shoot first offense, and his crappy D, but you have to admit he’s too good of a point guard to play in Europe.

  • rikson

How many players on Olympiakos made it to the NBA finals? Man, that has to be the dummest question ive heard in a while (and I visit this board frequently!)… In fact you even answered it yourselve – that tells stories… Back to the topic: I dont wanna go over that 2001 Sixers team again, as I discussed it here already – but IMO that was just the perfect fit for him, and lets not forget about the Mount and Mckey…

  • rikson

FACT: Iverson is a 42.5% shooter over his career, with 31% hit 3 pointers. 45 percent in Denver? With that roster? In a league where Rondo drops over 50%? Im not saying thats bad, but its just not enough to hold the status he has (in your eyes)…

  • JoeMaMa

Iverson’s talent, heart, and ability will never be questioned. BUT!

The younger teams don’t want a hired gun to take away from their rebuilding process of “team first”, but a couple may be desperate enough sign him for fan support. The contenders know he won’t play second or third banana and could screw up the carefully created and highly paid chemistry that took years to gel. The rest of the teams don’t have the cap space, and don’t think his practice-free past is worth the tax.
SO, he can either A) swallow his pride and not be “the guy”, points or money-wise. Or he can B) take more loot and go overseas, which he can’t do, because that looks like a demotion to him.
    Or he can C) retire.
    Which one will it be?

  • frank

Why is it that every time a player is rumored to be heading overseas, some European dude puts up fifty comments saying that they would suck in the euroleague? It always happens, and it pisses me off.

  • http://fsdklf.com Jukai

Jesus Rikson, your dumb as hell. Do I really have to explain the Olympiakos-nba finals comment?

  • Nino

that would suck cuz if he does go over to euro,he’ll prob come back to the nba a scrub

  • Harrell

What type of Bull $h!t is this

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

We talkin’ bout εξασκώ?…εξασκώ?! We talking about εξασκώ, not a game…εξασκώ?

  • Teddy-the-Bear

@ Joe: WOW way to exaggerate. First of all, nobody said Iverson can’t not be the “man”. Put him as a starter, he’ll get people involved. Why do people automatically assume he can’t decrease his shot attempts? Just because he doesn’t want to come off the bench behind an inferior player (ie Richard Hamilton) and play EIGHTEEN MINUTES a game? Hamilton wouldn’t have been happy doing that sh!t either. Iverson was FINE with dipping his stats and getting guys like Stuckey, Sheed, and Tay involved. Which was still stupid, considering Stuckey was the freaking point guard. Why SHOULD Iverson come off the bench? That’s like telling Baron Davis to come off the bench for Eric Gordon (I know they play different positions).

  • chintao

Man, I’m tired of hearing about Teddy’s Marbury/Starks jersey masquerade (post #4 and counting?). Can somebody just buy that guy a real Starks throwback already?

  • Sopas

Rikson, Lebron shot the ball at 41% in the 08 playoffs and still averaged 28.4ppg. He pretty much owned the playoffs even when the Cavs were playing the Celtics.

Now your telling me that AI will play crap in Euroleague and shoot ~40% ??? U probably haven’t seen his stats, he played 82 games in his last season with Denver, it’s not suprising that AI only played 50+ games in Detroit (cos he’s only a 180 pound- 6 foot player, pretty much an averaged sized person). And were not even talking about points here.

And if it is even true that olympiacos want AI, dont you think that they would at least entertain that idea (as is give the ball to AI, let him score)

Just so you know btw im not an AI fan

  • Teddy-the-Bear

@ BBBaller: Dude what the hell are you talking about? Iverson is a SHOOTING GUARD. No duh a shooting-guard is going to be SHOOT FIRST.

  • Felix

yeah, I agree with Frank. The euros are the same people that brought us Nihkolai Shkitisvili… so many euro legends aren’t even bench warmers on NBA squads. How do these guys ever think US ballers aren’t good enough?

  • oddball

Rikson, you’re a douchebag. Iverson to the knicks would be interesting.

  • halkias

Come on now…stop talkin like European basketball is sh*t.Actually in Europe we play defence..Half of the NBA players wouldnt stand a chance playing in Europe..

  • http://slamonline Akira

we have two things here about the answer the first one is:
the nba teams lost confidence on AI and i think that’s wrong.
the other is that in europe we have zone defense, great shooters and some guys who can post.
The nba and europe have a lot of diferences…
defence, ofence even the playmakers like jasikevicius have a positive stats this year 9pts and 3ass.
if AI could defence like in the nba and have a good rol in the guard position, i think he can have a huge success and win the f** euroleague and prove to the nba that he still have legs and heart thanks everyone

  • Felix

HALF OF NBA PLAYERS WOULDN’T STAND A CHANCE IN EUROPE!?! Please tell me where you get your dro, and hook a player up asap!

  • Felix

Iverson to the knicks would change peoples lives!

  • rikson

Im dumb as hell?! You dont even get it, when I make fun of your stupid questions… So either my english is too bad, or you are just a premature american teenager who is trying to make up for his lack of arguments-> I think its the last…

  • rikson

“How do these guys ever think US ballers aren’t good enough?” -> You still didnt get the point! Its your foolish american pride that makes it so difficult for us to have a meaningfull conversation with you guys… NOBODY said that USA-players arent good enough! And EVERYBODY knows that the NBA is the best BB-League in the world! STILL there are major differences in the way the game is played -> you have to admit that! If you take a look at the American-Boys coming over and be succesfull (lets not forget that there are alot of players from US colleges here who are not able to be succesful here), youll recognize that its mostly big guys and shooters! Thats because its easier for them to adapt… AND AGAIN: Im not saying AI is too bad for europe (thats just BS) -> im just saying he will have difficulties adapting to the euro-style! Probably more so than other players…

  • George B

    it won’t happen.

  • Vish

does anyone truly believe that AI will be in Europe? i seriously doubt it….i am still thinking bobcats are the answer for the answer

  • ngoiekafita

IF the answer goes to Europe, doesn’t matter if it’s in frickin’ vatican city.
I WILL BUY A TICKET (plane n game) JUST TO WATCH THAT DUDE PLAY BEFORE HE CALLS IT QUITS.
As a 27 year old baller, he’s the reason i cross mofo’s up like he did in the rookie game. (yeah, Nash, i’m talking bout you)
My favo slam is the one with Ive in a GTown jersey.

  • ngoiekafita

Btw i want an iso for AI on wayno

  • Sopas

Rikson, dont worry I’ll be your friend. Leave Rikson alone!!! *cough, chris crocker, cough*

  • http://djsklfl.com Jukai

rikson: You take a sentence of what I write then bash it for a reason I wasn’t getting at. It’s not your ENGLISH but your ENGLISH COMPREHENSION that is severely off. Go back to another year of remedial foreign language bro, it’s getting annoying that everytime I post, you think a comparison line I make should be taken stand-alone and serious.
At this point, I would probably get more intelligent responses talking to a German Sheperd. Even a Sheperd is smart enough to know Iverson would tear it up.

  • halkias

The differnces between NBA and European BBall are so many..Thats what makes me think that half of the NBA players cant make it in Europe..They need a lot of time to understand the game here..I dont say that they are bad players but they are trained differently.Does anybody think that if the USA team played in NBA rules would lose ever? But when it comes to the rules of a world championship things change…

  • Aristotle

AI is loved over there so why not? If noone wants him in the NBA, and if for whatever reason he’s not happy with a certain deal in the NBA, what would be wrong with going to Greece? Decision will be his. Has to decide whether he wants to stay in the NBA and try win that ring, and learn to play off the bench or just go and arse around in Greece and get paid.

  • rikson

I know that you didnt want to proove that you can ask silly questions -> but still you did. And now you trying to get on my nervs for that reason – thats rather cheap! Plus I didnt take anything out of context – I just repeated your question. Im guessing your probably not older than 15 years… By the way, if you have problems with my english your welcome to speak german!

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Rikson
I dare you to go toe to toe with me breaking down that 2001 team where no player besides Iverson averaged 15 points a game.
I promise you, I’m going to win.
It’s ridiculous that you discount Iverson shooting 45 percent in Denver despite taking as many shots as he took. When was the last time a shooting guard in the NBA, a superstar shooting guard, shot over 50 percent from the field. And that’s what Iverson was for Denver, their shooting guard. 45 percent is perfectly acceptable as a shooting guard, but you want to discount that because it ruins your narrative.
Is Iverson a great shooter, no. But that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t dominate the Euro league.

  • rikson

    AllenP
Watch your tongue! You know just as well as I know: The last thing Iverson needs are scorers, right? He needs defensive minded players around him, who dont need to touch the ball all the time! Back to Denver: Do you really think that Iverson played well, even without having any success with an star-packed roster?!

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I think that Denver’s entire offense was constructed around isolations for Iverson and Melo and lack movement. I think Kenyon was recovering from and injury and so was Nene. I think nobody on that team cared about defense, and they lacked the type of vocal leadership that Chauncey eventually provided.
Yes, I think Iverson could have played better, but I think he played just fine. His first year in Denver, they won like 46 games (the most in Karl’s career in Denver) and stole a game from San Antonio at home in the playoffs. The eventual NBA champion Spurs.
The next year, they won 50 games, again a record, and got swept by a Lakers team that went to the Finals.
Iverson could have done more, particularly on defense, but by no means was he horrible or a team cancer. I watched damn near every Nuggets game those two years and the problem was a lack of accountability and imagination by the coaching staff. It was the same thing that plagued the Nuggets when they got MURDERED by the Lakers in Game Six of this year’s Western Conference Finals.

I did some looking around, but the only guys that even comes close to AI in terms of production and FG% at the SG spot were Reggie Miller and Joe Johnson but it was a BIG gap between them – AI was getting up around the 24-27 ppg spot for his 44/45% where as Miller only got close to that in his 3rd year 24.6 ppg on 49% FG but the pattern of consistancy was way below that around 42/43% each season.
    WELL DEVELOPED ARGUMENT!
