Brandon Roy, Blazers Reach Agreement

by Ryne Nelson

If you ever had any doubt. If you ever had any question about it. You’d be damn wrong.

Yahoo‘s Adrian Wojnarowski reports:

Portland Trail Blazers guard Brandon Roy has agreed to a five-year contract extension worth between $78 million and $82 million, a league source told Yahoo! Sports.

The Blazers are planning a news conference with Roy on Thursday to announce the deal.

Brandon Roy. Max contract. Perfect franchise player. A shooting guard with every capability of leading the Blazers to the Finals. If he brings rings to the Rose Garden, you know what they’d say about him in the PDX…

Stop smiling so wide. It’s not really that far fetched to think about Brandon Roy being the best Trail Blazer to ever breathe. It’s possible — know it. Letting Brandon Roy even taste free agency is a sin. Of course, Portland is going to extend him. Only household names get the franchise label. Dwight, Bron, Dwyane, Chris, Deron, Carmelo, Brandon. Repeat that list aloud. Doesn’t it just feel right coming off on the tongue?

That’s the NBA. We’re in very good hands.

’bout time. The only extension they should actually been negotiating is Aldrige. Roy is a max player without question

“That’s the NBA. We’re in very good hands.” the economy would like a word with you, young man. oh, and bill walton just threw up in his mouth a little.

  • Tyrone Shoelaces

    @mutoni: ditto for clyde drexler.

  • http://www.slamonline.com 24 Karat Gold

@mutoni: ditto for minnesota management…Randy Foye is looking worse and worse

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

best trail blazer ever? Clyde Drexler or Bill Walton dont seem like safer choices for that? But B-Roy might become the greatest ever to rock the red and black, but not in this point of his career.

  • chingy

Deron Williams a franchise player??? I’d take Chris Bosh over him

  • http://superstrongjohn.com superstrongjohn

did you forget.. kobe? i’m gonna go out on a limb and say he’s pretty household…

  • Teddy-the-Bear

The Glide is the best Blazer ever. B Roy will be better some day.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

chingy what the fudge? That was a strange comment. Of course D-Will is a franchise player. Look I’m a huge Bosh fan but I’d still take Deron Williams in the blink of an eye.

  • chingy

Teddy, that’s fine. I love D-Will too; its just I’d take a big over a small when the two players themselves are similar in value

  • chingy

And don’t forget dwill did his damage with another all star in boozer…bosh didn’t have the luxury of playing with another all star until Turk this coming year

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

see that’s a franchise, max money dude. not like joe johnson.

  • Fut

I’d take an aged Ray Allen over Bosh.
Just saying. I’ll take my words back when Bosh manages to play an entire season like a fracnchise player rather than fail badly halfway through.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

Bill Walton?? Wasn’t that guy always injured?
And Scottie Pippen played here once – nearly got this team to the promised land. Imagine…

  • chingy

Fut, except an aged Ray Allen doesn’t even play like a franchise player for half a season

  • slamfan4life

No way Roy is close to Drexler, Pip was there for a short amount of time; Roy needs to get to the finals to even be in a convo bout the best Blazer

    “clyde the glyed”

  • The Real Thing

Great news. Roy will probably be the best Blazer ever some day. Imo, Drexler is currently the best. Too bad Rip City fell apart against the Pistons in ’90, and against the Lakers in the western conference finals in ’91. I’m still convinced that Portland could have won it all in ’92 if the Bulls had somehow failed to make the Finals, but Jordan was just too good. Bill Walton is a close second – sure, he led the team to the championship in ’77 and MVP the next year, but injuries and sitting out the ’78-79 season because the team wouldn’t trade him brings him down.

  • Duncan21

Ha thats dope, he just needs more help and they need to let jerryd bayless get some pt cuz he is ill when they let him play. And with Lamarcus aldrige, theyll be ill for years

  • http://fdjsklf.com Jukai

Dacre: Always injured enough to win an MVP and a championship by himself

  • RedRum

Roy is the Tim Duncan of guards

  • http://leogau.com Leo

Durant not getting on the list?

  • Teddy-the-Bear

@ chingy: If you’re saying Bosh is underrated, well, you’re probably right.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

BUT for Deron Williams, talk about underrated. Dude hasn’t even played in an All-Star game (I think). That’s a shamockery.

  • jose

    cp3?no?

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

I think Clyde is the best blazer ever. Terry Porter is arguably the best point guard to play in Portland, I think Rod Strickland was very under rated and at one point in the mid 90s, the second or third best in the west next to Payton and Stockton.

  • http://www.rich-imaging.com Dutch Rich

    Top 5 Blazers:
    William Walton
    Clyde Drexler
    Drazen Petrovich
    Brandon Roy
The corps of Greg Oden carried by Arvidas Sabonis.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Freakin Jordan ruined the championship dream for so many dudes… My goodness. Him and Dream took the title away from Ewing and Starks’ Knicks TOO MANY times. And the ‘Rip City’ boys must h@te him too.

  • jopex

man clyde “the glyde” is a trail blazer great for sure….he’s all”RIGHT”….get it….on the other hand B-ROY is ambidextrous and by far has more offensive arsenal than Clyde “the glyde to the RIGHT”….defensively B-ROY still has gaps to fill but with a contract like that his motivation to improve is locked in….

  • http://www.broy7.com nate the great

thank god, i would have slit my wrist if they would have let him go.
but like i said before i dont think we should sign l.a. to a max contract on speculation of his potential.
i really dont feel his ceiling is that high.. but i guess we will have to wait and see.

  • http://sportzin.com Joey E.

i think BRoy is overachieving right now.
wee’ll look back at this contract and nod our heads. “wow, the max?”

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

@Jukai: It’s true, sarcasm is hard to portray through the internets.

Just as well your not a Knicks, Wizards or fellow Suns fan.
    O_o

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

I don’t see it but I’m probably wrong.

  • http://djsklfl.com Jukai

Dacre: sorry bout that buddy, I feel bad for Walton: the dude had injury problems even in college (I mean career slowing injuries!!). Yet for three years, he was ungodly. If he was put together right, we may talk about him with Kareem, Chamberlain, Shaq, Hakeem and Russel.

  • tavoris

I love Brandon Roy’s game, but dude’s ceiling isn’t higher than Clyde Drexler. Drexler is a unquestioned HOF’er. However, Roy is obviously the most important Blazer in the last fifteen years-which alone makes his extension well-earned.

  • chingy

@teddy: you’re right on that, Dwill having no all-star berths is a shame to say the least

  • chingy

@teddy: you’re right, Dwill not getting any all star berths is a shame

  • Enigmatic

Scottie Pippen is the greatest PLAYER to ever play for the Blazers, in terms of overall career. However, we all know dude was past his prime by then. Kinda like saying MJ’s the greatest Wizard/Bullet of all time. In terms of who’s the best Blazer ever that actually did his thing while with Portland, yeah it’s definitely gonna come down between Roy and Glide.

  • http://djsklfl.com Jukai

    Enigmatic: Walton bro.

  • chingy

Don’t forget Sabonis people; some argue he was the toughest center to guard ever…I’m not saying he’s the greatest Blazer..but he deserves a mention

  • Teddy-the-Bear

    Co-sign chingy and Enigmatic.

  • ty-lewis

the best blazers is b-roy and lamarcus aldridge and i dont think that there even in there prime( much to come for B-roy&LA

  • mj23

MAX contract for a player who hasn’t been to the playoffs yet???? That is mighty generous of the Blazers. And don’t forget Rasheed was a Blazer once.

  • http://nba.com Reflex

    ^^^^^^^^
He was in the playoffs last year,no?
Roy is 25-5-5 guaranteed and then some, undisputedly deserves his money

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

maybe all the drugs made it hard for Walton to maintain his body.
I think Kevin Durant and Carmelo are better than Brandon Roy.

  • VA

B roy is worth every scent. Im just sick of blazers fan always saying things like well they got potential, or they’ll be good nxt year, or Oden will be a stud nxt yr. Blazer fans r always talking about potential.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

lol @ VA: I know what you mean, but they’re a young team. Obviously they’re going to talk about their players developing.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Oh cr@p almost forgot about Sheed. How can we forget about Sheed? Sheed is definitely one of the greatest Blazers ever.

  • tavoris

mj23, they were in the playoffs ths year

  • tavoris

Teddy, Sheed was great for the Blazers at the wrong time…he’s tied too closely to the “Jail Blazers” moniker (even tho he’s a great teammate, and never gets in trouble of the court). As far as talent, I’d say Sheed was the greatest Blazer. Production and long-term success-wise it’s Clyde no doubt. Consecutive Finals appearances, Olympic Medal, and a ring in the JORDAN era makes that undisputable.

  • chingy

I’d have to agree with Allenp on this one; Durant’s a stud, and Melo just bullies everyone

  • vmcb

I love Brandon Roy and he’s turning me into a Blazer’s fan, along with Aldridge, Odenm and Fernandez, but for some reason, I wanted to see him leave.

  • vmcb

Also, I’d say he’s in the conversation for best Blazer ever, no doubt. Better than Drexler at this point in his career? Maybe not, but I expect him to improve. I also think he’s a better player and leader than Durant, but Durant is younger. So its a push.

  • Enigmatic

Damn, Chingy. I forgot all bout Sabonis. If Sabonis had played with them in his more formative years…dude woulda been sick!

  • AMANSLIFE
  • http://slamonline BossTerry

@tavoris Sheed did get in trouble off the court while in Portland. He and Stoudamire were pulled over on I-5 driving back from a game in Seattle, and they were smoking weed.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

When its all said and done, Raef Lafrentz will be the best ever. Not just Blazer, but athlete, period. Dude’s potential is limitless!
