Mensah-Bonsu Signs with Rockets

The Houston Rockets have reached a verbal agreement on a contract with free agent forward Pops Mensah-Bonsu according to his agent John Greig. “We have an agreement,” Greig said in an interview Thursday with FOX 26 Sports. “It’s a one-year deal.”

He played in 12 games for the Dallas Mavericks during the 2006-07 season and split time last year with the San Antonio Spurs and the Toronto Raptors.

Mensah-Bonsu has career averages of 4.1 points and 3.9 rebounds after playing a total of 34 games over two years. However, during 19 games with Toronto last season he averaged 5.1 points and 5.4 rebounds while averaging only 13.8 minutes a game.

this is a truly remarkable signing n i thin it will give the rockets the edge in the dark and dangerous western conference. i think they will embark on a harry potter-esque journey that will ultimately end with them captureing the holy grail of the basketball world, an nba world championship.

^LOL but this is a good pick up

What’s with Dallas signing all these foreign players???

    ive always liked him.

  • Harlem_World

No franchise type player, obviously, but in the right setting, this guy could be a good piece to the puzzle. Energy guy, rebound some, even block some shots and get you a couple highlights a game. What’s not to like?

  • Overtime

Definitely a fan of this guy, I look forward to seeing him play for team GB

    this doesn’t make them worse.

People in Toronto loved this guy at the end of last year. We didn’t have a roster spot for him, unfortunately. Still, it’s good to see him get a chance somewhere.

    Who got da Pops?

He’s pretty much a cheap Varejao.

Mmmm, have you ever seen him play? He does nothing like Varejao. He doesn’t play good post D and doesn’t take charges. Very little offensive awareness too so he doesn’t run into open spaces. What he does is run the floor and eat rims.

Although it was a short stay in TO, the fans loved him. At least he’ll get more playing time in Houston

At what point do the rockets address the fact that their only post players are Carl Landry, Chuck Hayes, and Luis Scola, who are all under 6’9″, plus David Andersen, who’s David Andersen.

  • Buschfire

its a shame he’s going I really liked his Energy off the bench and the way he ate up rebounds and threw down ugly dunks! Houston picked up a good player

Andersen is weaaaaak. Soft even by Euro standards. I caught him in Barcelona and he was getting bullied around.. in the ACB. Scola on the other hand is a killa.

They have Amir Johnson, who can play a similar role, plus adds shotblocking, and is younger. Pops was great in his short stint in Toronto, but then again, it was a 33-win team with a starting Center who would rather play on the perimeter and pulled down like 5 boards a game.

He wont get any PT behind Chuck or Landry.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

I’m a huge Rocket and Raptor and Knick fan, so I’m pretty good with this deal right here. He’s a good player for my Rockets. On the other hand, the Raptors could have used him.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

This is actually good for the Raptors, because Amir Johnson will get a lot of playing time now.

  • Tre

Forget your daddy who’s your pops?

  • chintao

@ Chendaddy ==> 7-footers don’t grow on trees. I’m sure Morey is checking all available options. Hell, he was even wooing Marcin Gortat at one point.

  • chintao

On the other hand… maybe more could be done. Perhaps they should talk to Lance Allred before the guy hops the next plane to Europe. (I’m only half-joking) http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news;_ylt=AqeHilJMUeIOpLmod5zDAk85nYcB?slug=aw-allred082309&prov=yhoo&type=lgns
