Uniforms Bring NJ Nets Political Heat

According to one member of the Senate, the Nets are lacking in state pride by removing the “New Jersey” from their road unis: “New Jersey’s professional sports teams, the Nets, Jets and Giants, have no problem feeding at the taxpayer funded trough, yet seem to forget who their benefactors are when they order the teams’ uniforms,’ [Senate Minority Whip Kevin O'Toole] said. ‘The taxpayers of this state have poured hundreds of millions of dollars into infrastructure upgrades in the Meadowlands where all the teams play their home games. Is it too much to ask that professional sports teams that benefit from the support of the New Jersey taxpayer recognize the state on their uniforms?’”

    Is it too much to ask that fans turn up to the games?
    Is it too much to ask that the owner actually gives a damn about the structure and success of the organisation?
    No I don’t think the Nets should’ve taken the ‘New Jersey’ off their uniform but… c’mon. Be reasonable, there are two sides to a coin.

    It’s too long.

    cause its about to be brooklyn babyyyy

    Never quite understood why both teams are called NY Jets and NY Giants.

  • heartlandG

    We know where tha hell tha Nets is from

  • http://artsorbed.blogspot.com Keila

    I always felt the Giants should be called the NJ Giants, but that’s another story.

    As for the Nets, I am really NOT looking forward to them moving to Brooklyn (if it ever happens). NY tries to take all the winning NJ teams. Giants have been having better seasons than the Jets, and play in Jersey, yet they still NY attached. The Nets do better than the Knicks do, so what does NY do, try to move them over to their side….

    @Hursty

    Nets attendance was MUCH improved from 01-04, and considering where the arena is and how difficult it actually is to get there, having 85% of the building full is pretty good. So yes it is too much to ask that fans turn up to games when their team, as Keila said, was bought and taken from them as soon they experience some success. A family friend of mine was a season ticket holder with floor seats for 20+ years and he gave them up because of Bruce Ratner. It has been one insult after another as Ratner tries to milk the state of every penny, while tearing our team down, removing all signs of “NJ” from the team, and then the CEO telling us “We plan on marketing the Nets as if they will be in NJ for the next 20 years”. As a local NJ paper said, “There is no blueprint for Brooklyn, no architect” and no progress. It’s destined to lose money and does not look like its going to happen. If Forest City Ratner doesn’t break ground by 12/31/09 the project, according to the Nets CEO “is off”.

    This team should have been moved to Newark years ago. The Prudential Center is accessible, state of the art, fairly new, and has many restaurants/bars surrounding it that fans could actually go to before the game and just walk to the arena. This team needs a chance to be in a prime NJ area, with good ownership, and fan loyalty before anyone can say that the NJ fans didn’t do their job. I can’t stand those fugly red jerseys. Bring back the blue ones that actually say NJ.

    As for the Giants and Jets, I was never a huge football fan, but being from Jersey, I always felt if they play in NJ at least one of them should have the state’s name.

    I hope the state of New Jersey pulls the funding from these pro-sports organizations, especially the Nets. Don’t the Giants and Jets have a stadium being built in Manhattan anyway? Or is that just the Jets?
    As for the Nets, who would want to come and watch this team play? Just go watch the New Jersey Devils, who actually compete far into the season almost EVERY YEAR.
    State of New Jersey, just give up on the nets.

    @NJ4Life
    Well said. Do the Devils play in the Newark arena? Ratner has slowly eaten away at the NJ fans and supporters.

  • The Real Thing

    New Jersey may be long, but so is Oklahoma City, and that didn’t stop the Thunder from putting it on their (ugly) road jerseys.

    @Coast
    Yes the Devils are the major tenants of the Prudential center in Newark. When the Nets were sold, the Devils moved out. It’s a really nice arena. It only seats about 17,000 but the Nets could easily sell that out if it’s marketed right and a big free-agent name is brought in next offseason.

    I actually know that senator. He used to be the mayor of my wife’s hometown. And he’s got a point. But if states would stop spending taxpayer money to build stadiums and, say, improve public schools instead, they wouldn’t have this problem.

    Move to Newark!!!!!

  • ly_yng

    Uh, might want to specify that that’s the STATE Senate of NJ, Marcel.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

    The Giants are always going to be a New York team. We can share it with New Jersey, but its always going to be the “New York Football Giants”. Come on, they beat the 16-0 Patriots!

    What Ben said.

    What Ryan said the 1st time, which will affect what Sam does.

    But Ben has the chalkboard banner for his blog… so what Ben says will be on the next test, take notes.

    @NJ4Life
    True, and well said, but I mean really from 05- to the present. Stadiums are half-empty etc.
    Good observations though.

    I think the Nets should keep the words ‘New Jersey’ on their road jerseys until they really know if they are moving out of Jersey.

  • http://www.yahoo.com terrance hargrove

    I think the Nets should keep the words ‘New Jersey’ on their road jerseys until they really know if they are moving out of Jersey. And Jersey should have a WNBA team for example ‘New Jersey Stars’

  • http://www.yahoo.com terrance hargrove

    I think New York should give New Jersey the naming rights to the Jets. So NJ could finally have a professional football team

    Please don’t leave Jersey! Just move to the prudential center. We don’t want to be abandoned like seattle {sorry}
