Van Gundy: Magic Disrepected by Schedule

Note to Stan: You’re going to feel disrespected until your team wins the ‘Chip: “‘For a team that went to the Finals, we really haven’t gotten the respect teams normally do,’ Van Gundy said. ‘Based upon what we did last year, I think our players do feel a little underappreciated and under respected.’ Van Gundy pointed to a perceived slight by ABC, which usually puts the two Finals teams from the year before in the prime 3 p.m. slot on Christmas day. This year, it’ll be the Los Angeles and Cleveland in the prime slot while the Magic play the Celtics in the prelim game. ‘It’s a lot of little things, and in the long run they’re not very important, but you feel it,’ Van Gundy said. ‘Like the television schedule. Normally on Christmas Day, you get a rematch of the teams that played in the Finals. But instead, we get a Christmas Day matchup of the teams that they (ABC) wanted to see in the Finals.’”

While he’s right about the Christmas Day game matchup….isn’t it a little early to be bit*hing already? And shouldn’t it be: Note to Stan?

    Someone call the Waaahmbulance!
I’ll fill out the Magic 2010 playoff post card:
“Waaahhh! The experts are picking ___ (insert team name) to beat us in the first round!”
“Waaahh! I can’t believe ___ (insert superstar/franchise player) is getting away with all those (insert alleged violation)!”
“Waaahh!! (insert center name) sucks! Our Dwight is a much better center! Assuming no one is in the way and he has a ball in his hands 3 inches away from the hoop.”

What about when Christmas day was all about Lakers-Heat? I think its usually biggest story line of the season, which just happened to be two finals teams last year.

It’s obvious to anybody with a brain that the nba hypes up certain teams. Otherwise cleveland wouldn’t have the easiest schedule at the end of the year gettin ready for the playoffs, with ALL those home games. It’s hilarious that they promote their “star” like that. But who cares?

I am in my right mind and I did not want to see LA/CLE. I get my feed of Kobe/Lebron on these boards hah.

@ tit tat: If Cleveland had a bunch of homes games towards the end of their season wouldnt they have to have a bunch of road games somewhere in between?

  • UnRel

is this about jeff or stan?

  • underdog

Wow, a coach bit*hing about TV schedule? Yes, that’s what a runner-up team needs.

  • whooo!

Stan should talk to the Spurs & Pistons. in ’06, BOTH finalists had a re-match that was was slotted at the same jay-vee slot. Kobe-Shaq was the main event.

  • Chicago-Rose

Stan has a point. But I’d rather see another Spurs Vs. Suns on Christmas Day that rivalry never gets old.

I think ABC is still trying to milk the Shaq and Kobe feud, which has been played out for years. But to be honest, I would rather watch the Cavs than the Magic any day.

  • http://slamonline.com Dave

Your team doesn’t get the respect Finals teams normally do, Stan, because they’re not contenders. The Magic had as much chance winning last year as the Suns and as much this year as the Mavs.
Good luck with Vince and Jason, by the way. The 2002 ASG just ages like wine…

  • Coast

Stop giving Stan such a hard time. He was just saying what his players thought.
Is anyone surprised by the marquee match-up on Christmas? No.
Who would rather see LA-ORL over LA-CLE? Orlando fans, and few others. ABC is not dumb. LeBron (and now Shaq, unfortunately) are bigger draws than Dwight, Vince, et al. This is obvious. Orlando should stop feeling disrespected, and just play. They’re probably 3rd in the East’s “power rankings” if Garnett is healthy anyway.
